October 8, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Four weeks to Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. The fog has burned off and it’s now sunny โ˜€ and 52 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. There is a east-northeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Surprisingly damp this morning in the woods, it was a really foggy morning at first. ๐ŸŒ I slept in, looking forward to seeing the sun.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 4pm. Big smile. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 10th. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 2017.

Today I am going to park at Kinzua Beach, walk down to the Reservoir, ๐Ÿšถ and maybe cross the Cornplanter Bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ on foot and then hike up the trail to Rimrock. The parking lot ๐Ÿ…ฟ should have a lot of sun for charging the accessories battery. ๐Ÿ”‹I don’t feel really ambitious today as I’m on vacation and I see no reason to rush anywhere. ๐Ÿ˜€ Time goes by so quickly as it is, why rush it? โณ

The sun will set at 6:46 pm with dusk around 7:14 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a east-northeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, an decrease of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 40 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 13th. East wind around 6 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 2001.

Ever since buying the axe ๐ŸŒฒI’ve gotten quite efficient at processing firewood, which is good especially on these long nights – although I’ve often kept the fires small as it’s been fairly mild and why waste wood you don’t have to waste?

Everything is kind of wet and soaked at camp today ๐Ÿ’ฆso I’m going to wait until tomorrow to break camp but I think this evening I will probably take down the tent and tarp once things dry out. I’m leaning towards camping in the southern part of the National Forest for the second half of the week and doing the elk route and Hyner View on Sunday. Although I wish there was more color but I like the quiet of the National Forest ๐ŸŒฒand not having to rush to take down and set back camp every day.

That an I kind of like the Pennsylvania countryside, ๐Ÿฎ especially seeing the farms and homesteads with burning trash and debris out back because I’m a pyro. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I’ll be totally open on that. Plus I like seeing the farm operations ๐Ÿšœ and the cabins in the woods ๐ŸŒฒand scenic vistas. ๐Ÿ“ท

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:06 pm with dusk at 5:35 pm (Standard Time). I plan to early vote before then โŽ but I might also volunteer on some local campaigns. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly sunny and temperatures between 48 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1994.

Reflection Swamp Near Silver Run

October 7, 2019 Night

Good evening! Nice evening laying back in the hammock. A barn owl is hooting in the distance, and I hear from crickets. The moon is obscured by the clouds but it’s still not super dark in the woods. Rain has been gone since midday ๐Ÿ•› and now the woods is fairly dry with a dropping dew point. There is a group of bow hunters ๐Ÿ™‡ a quarter mile down the road – they’re the group with the big jacked up 3/4 ton truck with the pick up camper. Far enough way that the only way I know there down there is occasionally a I hear their coon dog ๐Ÿถ howling or an occasional hoot or holler from their camp – that an I drove past their camp earlier. Coyotes are loud tonight.

Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 pm.

Today as expected was kind of a damp and somewhat rainy day โ˜” although the rain ended much earlier than in Albany but the first sign of any real clearing was not until around sunset. I sat out and read outside for a while but started to feel cold and damp and decided to hot tent with the book. ๐Ÿ“– I got through my second book of vacation – as I noted earlier – Andrew Revkins book on Weather. Nice picture book, sometimes adults like books with lots of graphics. Second book I’ve read on vacation. ๐Ÿ“š Very warm at times in the tent – that heater kicks out a lot of heat and with temperatures in the mid 50s I kept having to turn it off.

I drove over to Jakes Rocks for a while this afternoon to top off the batteries but ended up disconnecting the accessory batteries from the alternator when I started smelling ozone. ๐Ÿ”‹ I don’t want to accidentally fry the alternator while I’m on vacation or even just burn up a wire or a fuse. It’s fine – after today the sun will be shining and I’ll rely entirely on the solar for the accessory loads as the sun will out. โ˜€

Walking around Jakes Rocks was nice although it was rather cloudy and dark โ˜. But other than that a fine afternoon. I’ll admit today was a quiet day but my expectations were pretty low.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 80% illuminated. The moon will set at 1:38 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Saturday night with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:19 am with the first light at 6:51 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 32 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 4pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 10th. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 2017.

I’ve decided to stay at this campsite one more day. โ›บ I just don’t feel like taking down camp with a week’s worth of gear and a tent to put away that is still a bit damp. Going to be a nice day tomorrow, so I definitely want to go hiking and park the truck somewhere to fully charge the accessory batteries. I might go to Titusville as I didn’t visit the museum last time I was there in 2012 or might just go for a walk along the reservoir, parking down at the swimming beach and maybe hiking up Rim Rock. ๐Ÿšถ

Wednesday who knows. ๐Ÿ’ญ West Virginia is still a possibility. The US 219 isn’t that far away and if I get up well before dawn and leave by eight I can probably do both Mount Davis State Park and Hoye Crest in Maryland before setting up camping in Cannan Heights. It looks as of the last time I checked the burn ban is still on but I don’t have to have a campfire. I always have the lights and the heater. And good music to listen to. I would probably stay until Sunday there and then come back through Pennsylvania and stay at the County Bridge Campground on Sunday into Columbus Day. Going to be mild and sunny the rest of the week.

Alternatively, I could drive up through Allegany State Park and camp, hike and hunt squirrel in Cattaraugus County or fish and hike in the Zoar Valley. ๐Ÿ  I’ve always wanted to check out the Eternal Flame Falls in Orchard Park – I read about it a lot now that I work with several Buffalo clients thee days. โ›ฒ Maybe the leaves are better up north in New York? ๐Ÿ‚

I could also move to somewhere farther south in the National Forest, check out Nebraska Bridge and that wildlife refuge down that way. Saturday or Sunday visit the Elk center and do the Elk Scenic Drive๐Ÿฏ along with visiting Hyner View Park which might have good color by then. I would also overnight at the County Bridge campground. Or honestly, I could stay at the same site all week. At any rate, wherever I camp that final night, I don’t want to be more than four driving ๐Ÿš˜ hours away from Albany so I can get back relatively early and have time to stop for lunch, visit some parks, take back roads and get back early enough to unpack.๐Ÿ’ผ It was too long of a drive for my sanity all the way out to Allegheny National Forest on the way it here.๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ

The damn camp lantern I bought mantles for remains real smokey with yellow flames and tons of soot ๐Ÿฎ. Not sure what the issue is. I was thinking that that the generator tube is clogged with dirt but the filter on it seems fine as does the gas pressure. I checked that I installed the proper mantles. Yeap. Everything seems fine but the inside of the lantern is filled with oily soot, the glass keeps on getting sooty and the top is dripping with soot. Fortunately I have plenty of electricity power off the truck, the lantern is just a backup in case of undervoltage and for extra light. Wouldn’t want to have it alone.

In four weeks on November 4 the sun will be setting at 5:07 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 41 minutes and 7 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 36 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 34 degrees. The record high of 76 degrees was set back in 1994.

I do really like that green Don’t Tread On Me – Live Free or Die shirt ๐Ÿ‘š I bought online. I would want to get caught dead wearing it in Albany but it’s fun here in the wilderness. I’m no fan of Donald Trump – he’s a racist moron with generally bad ideas ๐Ÿ‘บbut I do think government should be downsized and stay out of people’s business. That’s why I’m eventually thinking of moving to a state like Missouri when I own my off grid property with solar on the roof, composting for the toilet and a burn pit out back for the trash. An an AR-15 because they sound like a lot of fun to shoot.

Looking ahead, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 5 weeks, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 8 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 8 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 9 weeks and Festivus ๐Ÿ– is in 11 weeks.

At Peak Color

October 7, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Next Monday is Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ. Alas at some point I’ll have to go back to Albany to make more money. Rain showers and 50 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. โ˜” Calm wind. The skies will clear around 10 pm.

It rained fairly hard at times last night it I’m not sure how much rain we actually got. ๐Ÿ’ฆ It was definitely loud on the fiberglass roof of the truck cap. The rain is supposed to pull out fairly early today, not going to be the all day long rain here. Looks like West Virginia got a decent amount of rain last night but I’m not sure if the fire ban will be over yet. Regardless I might go down there, it’s to be decided tomorrow. I’d love ๐Ÿ˜ to see West Virginia again, it’s been two years since I was last there. That said I’m quite content to be camping in the Allegheny National Forest and might still want to see more of Western NY.

I pitched the tent to have a place to escape the rain next to the heater ๐ŸŽช but so far it’s been warm and relatively dry enough that I’ve not used it. I’m hoping by morning the tent dries out, especially if I decide to break camp tomorrow to move on to other places.

So far the mosquitoes haven’t been bad this morning like they were yesterday. ๐Ÿœ Still raining here a bit and cold but I know yesterday I was glad I brought DEET with me.

One of the things I finally figured out is its best to cook eggs ๐Ÿณ on the camp stove in a frying pan on top of the griddle rather than directly on it. This keeps the eggs from sliding off on to the stove and is better for controlling the level of heat.

Today will rain, mainly before 10am. Patchy fog before 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 55 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 25th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 10am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Calm wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1963.

Definitely could use some sun and if the weather is decent later on I plan to go for a drive to the Allegheny Reservoir and Rimrock ๐Ÿ“ท in part because I really should top off the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹. There is enough shade and the sun angle is low enough โ˜€ that I’m really not getting much solar.

The sun will set at 6:48 pm with dusk around 7:16 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 53 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. West wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

I was watching the camp garbage burn in the fire last night – especially the black smoke Styrofoam tray the meat ๐Ÿ– came in last night and a little Greta Thornburg came into my head saying “How Dare You”. I had to laugh a little. I’m not hauling back to Albany anything that I can burn to be landfilled๐Ÿšฎ in the Pine Bush forever for two dollars ๐Ÿ’ต a bag at the transfer station.

But then again I remember the comstirnation that I caused on Facebook when I said I thought biodegradable camp soap was stupid. ๐Ÿ’ญ I understand the surficants in detergent aren’t as biodegradable as ordinary soap but they do break down eventually and are pretty harmless to the environment is disposed away from water. ๐ŸŒŠ Most old houses and farms dispose of gray water to pipes away from the house. Yeah, they’re is a stinky gray area where the pipe comes out from the soaps and detergents but if they are far away enough from creeks ain’t harming nothing. ๐Ÿšฐ

I also hunt with lead ammunition ๐Ÿ”ซ and use lead sinkers for fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at least the larger ones that are still legal. I also use lead solder for electronics projects at home. ๐Ÿ”ฌ I totally get banning the small sinkers and not using lead shot when duck hunting or having lead in commercial electronics. But that’s a thing of scale and real harm – waterfowl get easily poisoned by lead shot. Lead poisoning is bad – I know people who have accidentally gotten shot and suffer from lead poisoning. But where it makes sense, use the right technology, even if Greta Thornburg does not approve. And I do pick up litter ๐Ÿšฎ I find in the woods, recycle cans and glass โ™ป, and make sure my poop and toilet paper is well buried. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:16 pm with dusk at 6:44 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1971.

Ledge

October 6, 2019 Night

Good evening! Rain and 61 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. โ˜” There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 59 degrees. Despite the rain, it’s a fairly mild evening. It looks like West Virginia is getting hit by a lot of rain tonight – even more than here and thats a good thing – they need it badly. The skies will clear Tuesday around 1 am.

Today I mostly stayed around camp โ›บ, reading a book about agriculture in America. ๐Ÿ“– I don’t remember the name of the book and I’m not interested in going out in the rain to look at it. Read it cover to cover, it was an interesting book.

Later in the evening I went for a walk ๐Ÿšถ along the Elijah Bike Trail up to Coal Knob. While the Coal Knob tower ๐Ÿ—ผ is long gone it is pretty with the Pitch Pine on the summit. It turned out to be a five plus mile walk, through a variety of forests.

Rain held off for the most part until 8:30 ๐Ÿ’ฆ and I laid back in the hammock for a while before having to take it down for the rain. A mild evening, I am now sitting tarp although I let the fire go down ๐Ÿ”ฅ to save wood for tomorrow and because I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay up. I might start up the truck a bit to top off the batteries before bed. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Tonight will rain. Patchy fog after 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 53 degrees at 6am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 23rd. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1986.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 72% illuminated with the moon setting at 12:39 am. The moon will set at 1:00 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Saturday night with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:18 am with the first light at 6:50 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 29 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain, mainly before 10am. Patchy fog before 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 56 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 22nd. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Calm wind becoming west 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1963.

If it’s too cold and wet in the morning, I’ll head into the tent next to the heater with a book and hang out there maybe with a cup of coffee. โ˜•

In four weeks on November 3 the sun will be setting at 5:08 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 41 minutes and 35 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 57 and 41 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 35 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1990.

Looking ahead, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 1 week, Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 4 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is a month away, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 5 weeks, December ๐ŸŽ„ is in 8 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 2 months, Bill of Rights Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 10 weeks, Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ is in 11 weeks, National Pie Day ๐Ÿฐ is in 15 weeks, and the 5:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† returns in 16 weeks.

From the Clearing

October 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 50 degrees at the Allegany National Forest. There is a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Chilly night, I’m glad I bought firewood for sure. I probably could have gathered wood but by the time I set up camp it was getting pretty dark.

Chilly night for sure. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Glad I have a fire. Regardless of where I stayed tonight I was going to be in Pennsylvania – if I had stuck to my original plan I would have camped at the County Bridge Campground but with my plans to stay in Pennsylvania multiple nights I drove all the way out to the Allegheny National Forest where I can have a campsite all to myself and not have to worry about making too much noise or smoke with my fire. โ›บ West Virginia via US 219 is still a possibility but first I’m going to wait out the rain at the Allegheny National Forest. Technically I can stay at this campsite all week, I could do that, I’m undecided. Going to take it one day at a time and make decisions come Monday. New River Gorge seems unlikely but maybe possible. I think they may have to wait until 2020 or 2021 but that’s just next year. So who knows! I could see doing my West Virginia trip in November 2020.

Tomorrow I’ll fine firewood for Sunday and Monday night. I fully expect the next two days to be fairly rainy and gray but so be it. I’ll probably pitch a tent tomorrow โ›บ so I can warm up next to the heater when it’s raining. Might go for a drive tomorrow just to top off the batteries as I’m not expecting much solar through Monday.

Today was cold enough I left the truck alternator connected all day to the accessory batteries. ๐Ÿ”‹ Didn’t smell any sulfurization and honestly the alternator dropped the voltage after several hours of driving. It never got above 55 degrees according to Big Red’s DIC. That said, I did drop the voltage low enough that the low voltage disconnect did kick in briefly so I ended up starting my truck briefly to restore the lights. ๐Ÿ’ก I thought about installing a override again to the low voltage disconnect but that never happened. I removed the switch after my last wiring project with the truck.

It’s wasn’t a bad day but it’s an awful long drive from Albany to the Allegheny National Forest. It wasn’t a bd trip except for the part through Binghamton when there was just a lot of busy traffic although it was moving. I ended up stopping both in Cobleskill and Oneonta in search of mantels for the lantern ๐Ÿฎ but ultimately I found them in Oneonta. They don’t sell them at every Walmart. In the future I’ll just have to plan ahead and order online. The lantern is still burning rather yellow – I think the generator tube in it that pressurizes the gas is clogged with dirt. I wonder if I can order the part online. I wish I had brought carburetor cleaner – I have some at home, if it continues to smoke and not burn real bright ๐Ÿ”† I’ll have to look at that. I have such problems with camping gear getting plugged with dirt – propane lines and everything else it seems. That said, ever since I used the other type of filter with the propane heater it has been quite reliable and the stove is good since I replaced the burners. I do use my equipment a lot – but happiness for me is nights in the wilderness.

Such a long drive out here. ๐Ÿš™ A swear after driving all day I start to get a bit delirious. ๐Ÿ˜œ I find my attention drifts away from driving. Fortunately in bum fuck Pennsylvania traffic is pretty light and cops ๐Ÿ‘ฎ are far between. At any rate I made it hear safely. If I had followed my original trip plan I would have cut two hours or more off today’s drive camping At County Bridge Campground, that ten dollar ๐Ÿ’ต a night primative campground outside of Troy on the way to future Interstate 99 and ultimately West Virginia. But I don’t like staying at campgrounds, especially with others around as I like having fires and listening ๐Ÿ‘‚ to music ๐ŸŽถ that oths may not care to hear.. Wilderness camping is a blessed experience for sure. It’s not only free for the site use but is free ๐Ÿ†“ in the sense of freedom. Much like my off grid property some point in the future.

Tonight will have a chance of light rain after 5am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 9pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 23rd. South wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1965.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 63% illuminated with the moon setting at 11:43 pm. The moon will rise at 3:15 pm. The ๐ŸŒ• is next Saturday with mostly clear skies. The sun will rise at 7:17 am with the first light at 6:49 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 12 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of light rain before 10am, then showers after 10am. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 65 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 1st. Maximum dew point of 57 at 5pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1900. There was a dusting of snow in 1954.โ„

Tomorrow I probably will string up a tarp and pitch the tent in preparation of the certain rain โ˜”. Ironically it looks like West Virginia might only get clouds โ˜ and a few drops of rain rather than the soaking rain they need badly. ๐Ÿ’ฆ But the Allegheny National Forest is due for a good soaker. But if that happens I’ll have the tent set up which will keep me dry with a good book ๐Ÿ“™ to read. I got four of them out of the library on Friday. ๐Ÿ“š Even if it’s cold and pouring rain, hot tenting will be nice. As I previously said I’ll probably go for a short drive tomorrow – maybe just to Jake’s Rocks to bring up the voltage on the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ on the truck. Not expecting a lot of solar tomorrow.

Looking forward to a quiet day in the Allegheny Wilds tomorrow with a good book. ๐Ÿ“š Life has been so busy lately and the quiet tomorrow will be good, doing a bunch of cooking ๐Ÿณ on the camp stove. Life has been so crazy lately I’m looking forward to the quiet.

In four weeks on November 2 the sun will be setting at 6:09 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 42 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then tonight. I’m not sure what to think about November although some of my favorite camping trips happened then. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 64 and 48 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 53 and 35 degrees. The record high of 82 degrees was set back in 1950.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 2 weeks, Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is a month away, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 8 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 2 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 11 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 12 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 15 weeks and 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 16 weeks.

It’s almost eleven. While it’s nice sitting by the heater I should think about bed. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Churchill Mountain

October 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the Autumn Vacation! Two weeks to Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ. Sunny and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind.

Almost finished packing. ๐Ÿ›„ A few more things to do after I finish my coffee โ˜• and take a shower. ๐Ÿšฟ I can question ๐Ÿ™‹ my final route – why did not I choose the Adirondacks or Vermont but ultimately the Allegheny wilds and Pennsylvania and Cattaraugus became what it is. โœจ I can hold onto a glimmer of hope for West Virginia but I know it’s quite unlikely. Pennsylvania and Western NY ๐Ÿ—ฝ are quite nice in autumn. More farms, rolling country, rednecks ๐Ÿšœ and folks having trash bonfires with lots of black smoke ๐Ÿ”ฅ out that way ๐Ÿ˜‚. I also like seeing land that works, ๐Ÿ‘ท that feeds cows ๐Ÿฎ, provides timber ๐ŸŒฒ, and coal.

I can question my decision but it should still be a nice week. โ›บ I might still do an Adirondack trip come November. I like the Adirondacks but sometimes I get bored with them and it’s not as far removed from Albany – not so cultural different. The Alleghenies have a much different feel for sure. ๐Ÿ—ป It’s good to get as far away from Albany as possible. I got my guns ๐Ÿ”ซ, knife ๐Ÿ”ชand my fishing gear ๐ŸŽฃ for when I’m back in Western NY mid next week.

Haven’t decided when I’ll be back. ๐Ÿก Maybe Sunday, maybe Monday Columbus Day. ๐Ÿ Depends on the weather and how I’m feeling at that point.

Today will have areas of frost before 9am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 15th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 61 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1941.

Today I need to get mantles for the lantern ๐Ÿฎ, firewood and paper muffin baking cups. Then gas up one more time before Pennsylvania. โ›ฝ Then do US 6 and take in as many parks as possible โ›ฒ.

The sun will set at 6:30 pm with dusk around 6:58 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 57 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 11 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 42 degrees at 12am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 8th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1965.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ when the sun will be setting at 6:07 pm with dusk at 6:36 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 60 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 59 degrees. We hit a record high of 79 back in 1963.

A New Road Trip

I had a perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ road trip figured out until things changed. โ˜”๐Ÿ”ฅ

The rain got stronger in the forecast and the drought worse in West Viriginia ๐Ÿ’ฆ — there is a fire ban in the Monongahela National Forest, making me think maybe I don’t want to camp in 40 degrees weather in October without a rip roaring fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ even with the heater and some cold beer and something good cooking in the camp oven ๐Ÿป. Then I was thinking about starting vacation in Allegheny National Forest and taking US 219 maybe on Tuesday to Canaan Heights (even if it means a night or two camping without a fire) but that’s a long trip out of the way, although both Maryland High Point and Mount Davis (Highest Point in PA) are on that way. Some of the neat old coal towns are along that way too, always fun to poke around after hoping off US 219. โ›

Some Color Looking Off Dolly Sods

But I want to get down to West Virignia by Monday at the latest, as I want to drive down to the New River Gorge on Tuesday. ๐ŸŒ‰ย So ain’t going to work necessarily well. So option 2 would be to first camp at County Bridge Campground in Pennsylvania, take Interstate 99 and US 220 and camp at Camp Run which is in the George Washington National Forest, which has had a little more rain and there is no campfire ban there.๐Ÿ”ฅ๐ŸŒง

Afternoon at Camp Run

But then it looks like Monday will be fairly wet, and I was a bit concerned about flooding on the road to Camp Run, as the campground is a ways above a Flood Control dam. Plus no radio or cellphone reception down there — so if I’mย  But now I don’t think it’s going to be quite as wet, so that’s the route I’ll take. Worse comes to worse, I might get stuck there a few extra days, but it’s unlikely. ๐Ÿ• It’s probably the shortest route, then on Monday or Tuesday, I’ll drive to New River Gorge, stay there one or probably two nights, then head back north. And heck, I might take US 219 and end my vacation in the Allegheny National Forest — and hit Mount Davis and Hoye Crest up that way.

Big Bend From Kinzua Dam

I don’t know, ย I think I will choose the Allegheny National Forest option to start out the week.๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ I’ve been there a lot but not in the autumn for a number of years. Then I could decide either to go to West Virginia via the US 219 or head north to New York. There might be very good color in Allegany and Cattaragaus County this week, and beautiful weather to boot. Small game hunting opportunities too. I wouldn’t mind a nice autumn hike back to Zoar Valley, Allegany State Park, Little Rock City, Letchworth State Park, and maybe even the Finger Lakes.
