Chance of Thunder Lean To

Last week I got an email requesting a list of lean-tos on state land that have full accomindations - that is an outhouse or pit privy. So I made up that list, and figured I'd share it as some might find it useful.

May 28, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Back in the cesspool for a few days. Work at home, no bonfires our back no paper plates to eat off or black flies to deal with. I so need to move back to the country and a life based on reality and not escape. Partly cloudy and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 64 degrees. Muggy, yes it’s summer now that I’m back home. It was remarkably cool up north in comparison. The skies will clear Saturday around 11 am.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 1pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 22nd. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Going to be hot and muggy. South wind 8 to 13 mph. At least that breeze will help. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.9° from the due south horizon (-1.9° vs. 6/21). Almost as high as the sun gets for the year. A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:42 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 8:57 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the west-southwest (245°) at an altitude of 49° from the horizon, 230,026 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 15 hours and one minute of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 68 degrees at 2am. 17 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mist in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1956.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, a chance of showers, mainly before 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. West wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 68. Maximum dew point of 44 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

It’s going to be a stay in town weekend 🏡 and I’m sure that will make the Uncle Police 🚨 in Facebook happy. But it’s going to be fairly cool and I need a break from camping. Does that not mean that next weekend I don’t decide to go north? Or to Schoharie County? Gawd, I don’t know. 🍓 It would be nice to get strawberries in Schoharie County if the farm stands are open.

May 26, 2020 Night

Good evening. Clear and 74 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. 🌃 Light south breeze. The dew point is 62 degrees. A beautiful night, after laying in the hammock for a while looking at the stars I decided to start a small campfire 🔥 just to sit by and look at while starring up at the skies. I’ve dimmed the lights for the evening, and it’s very starry 🌟 on this final night of camping. Saw one intensely bright shooting star fall from the sky – kind of burned up with a bright flash. Made a wish and looked in disbelief that suddenly its 2020.

Tonight should be a nice night, partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. 🌃 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 3rd. Maximum dew point of 62 at 9pm. Doesn’t feel that muggy here. But then again, I’m just hanging out by the fire and it’s a small one. Dry enough I will put it out cold before bed. A lot of dry grass around this campsite even as the green grass grows back up around it. Light south wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1969.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 18% illuminated. Nice strong moon shadow tonight too. At 9 PM, the moon was in the west (272°) at an altitude of 33° from the horizon, some 234,985 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by November 21st. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Strawberry 🍓 Moon is on Friday, June 5. The darkest hour is at 12:56 am, followed by dawn at 4:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:24 am in the east-northeast (59°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:06 am with sun in the east-northeast (66°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 36 seconds over last night.

A fairly quiet but busy work day from camp. ⛺ Lots of phone calls 📞 and emails ✉ sent, lots of client business done. Memos written 📝 questions 🙋 answered. Kind of like working from home only more scenic. Very quiet up here now that the holiday weekend is over, I think I saw maybe three cars all weekend.

Tomorrow after I take down camp I’ll work from the Lake Algonquin Park and Speculator Beach or library if I need more bandwidth then I can do over my phone. 😎 Maybe get a burger 🍔 or something for lunch and ice cream for the heat 🍦, possibly dip my feet in at the beach and when work is done at five, head home 🏡. Honestly, I think I’m just as productive remote working from the Adirondacks 🗻 and a whole less stressed. And by the time I get home the heat wave 🌊 should be largely broken.

Had some rain showers today ☔ and a few claps of thunder ⚡ but nothing to dramatic. One shower probably could be heard a bit on a client call 📞 but I’ll chock it up to rain on the roof – of the screen tent. By no means does the tent 🎪 block all the rain but with the tarp I used to create shade it worked well enough.

Food today 🍲 was kind what I had leftover, I packed food and clothes for a maximum of four days and I’m day five of the trip. Lunch was tuna fish salad with breakfast sausage and pasta, while dinner was creamed corn, refried beans, pasta with mayo and cheese along with breakfast sausage. 👍 A garbage plate, yes but I wanted to eat up what I had before it went bad.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 8am. Going to be sticky by the time I awake but this night is real pleasant. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1914.

In four weeks on June 23 the sun will be setting in the northwest (304°) at 8:42 pm,🌄 which is 15 minutes and 41 seconds later then tonight. The sun doesn’t set much later then it does now – only a fifteen minute gain. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 84 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1888.

Tonight is the last night camping ⛺ for my Memorial Day Weekend remote working trip, but it has inspired me to do more similar adventures in the future as long as I plan places that have good cell phone reception and sun for the solar panel. Over the past five days I’ve used over 1,000 watt hours of solar power camping, mostly for my laptop and phone charger for work and some camp lighting and starting battery 🔋 topping but that’s not been a lot quite honestly compared to keeping the laptop charged for work. I’m thinking a possible weekend next in Schoharie County may be next, but that’s a few weeks off and remote work may end sooner than later and it’s back to the old dungeon office 🏢. And riding the CDTA bus 🚍 to work every day. How novel public transportation seems these days. I do kind of miss the days of yore but I like the wilder side of life too during the pandemic. Maybe if they reopen Cherry Ridge 🍒 I can camp and remote work from the wilds of Madison County and do a nice day trip down to Rogers Center on the weekend for bird 🐦 watching.

Looking ahead, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 4 weeks, Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 23 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 23 weeks.

Wisdom of a quarter mile between campsites

As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realize that beauty of the state’s policy of keeping dispersed and wilderness campsites at least a 1/4 mile apart.

While that leads to fewer camping opportunities in popular locations, it also means a truer wilderness experience where other campers will not be disturbed by talking, music, chopping wood or other human noise, smoke from other fires or other privacy issues.

Afternoon

I enjoy having my space while camping and having nobody else in sight or sound while in the wilderness.

May 25, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 66 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 58 degrees. It was a beautiful sunset 🌇 to end the Memorial Day Weekend. Thank you all that served and gave their lives for the country.

I totally got killed by the black flies 🐜 today when I was laying back on the hammock, emailing and calling clients. It was a pleasant place to work but the black flies and the sun burnt wasn’t so much fun. Tomorrow if the heat is bareable I’ll spend more time in the screen tent 🎪.

The sun ☀ was good for part of the day and the breeze was nice so solar power worked fine for the laptop and all other things that needed a charge. I didn’t really mind working this Memorial Day as it was a beautiful weekend and maybe while a working weekend a good one. I just wish I had used more sunscreen and DEET or picardin on my legs.

While the screen tent 🎪 is good for the black flies, at times it sure is hot during the day. While occasionally a bug will sneak in and bite for the most part the black flies are very well controlled by the tent. They are starting to die down now for the night 🌃 and then maybe I’ll have a small fire if the breeze dies down and lay back in the hammock. 🔥 I am worried about how dry it is up here, so I want to keep any fire small but it would be nice to burn up the paper plates and camp trash.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 58 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 19th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 9pm. South wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2019, we had rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1972.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon with 11% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the west-northwest (282°) at an altitude of 24° from the horizon, some 237,868 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 A pretty little sliver moon tonight. At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by November 22nd. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The moon will set in the borthwest (305°) at 11:29 pm. The Strawberry 🍓 Moon is on Friday, June 5. The darkest hour is at 12:56 am, followed by dawn at 4:50 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:24 am in the east-northeast (60°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:07 am with sun in the east-northeast (67°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 39 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 13th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 5pm. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2010. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.❄

After the sunburn and black fly bites yesterday 🐜 I’m undecided if I will drive home after work tomorrow or wait until Wednesday evening and the heat breaks. I think I would prefer Wednesday but I’m running low on food and clothes to wear. And it might be ungodly hot working in the tent on Tuesday. 🔥

In four weeks it will be the second day of summer on June 22 the sun will be setting in the borthwest or northwest for that matter (304°) at 8:42 pm,🌄 which is 16 minutes and 29 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 1954.

Looking ahead, Average High is 80 🏖 is in 4 weeks.

May 17, 2020 10 PM Update

Good evening! Cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a east breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear Tuesday around 1 am.

For all the commotion earlier it looks like the fire 🚒 is out or whatever all the emergency vehicles were reporting too. Maybe I’m a bit paranoid about the plastics plant blowing up but I’m well aware of toxic chemicals they use at SABIC plastics and it sure seemed like a lot of emergency response heading that way. 👮 Probably safer at home at any rate and who knows their is rain pushing this way shortly.

It’s not like I sat home and eat twinkies all day. 🍛 I did have a bowl of tuna fish salad for dinner but it probably has a quarter pound of peas and broccoli besides the noodles, mayonnaise and tuna fish. 🐠 I did hold back on the mayonnaise a bit.

Walking out to Five Rivers this afternoon was nice. 🐸 Spent several hours studying nature with the binoculars my parents lent me. It’s really fascinating to watch the birds up close and even just study squirrel and chipmunk behavior. Next up I need to get a better knowledge of bird 🐦 species – I know the common ones but especially the migratory birds are a bit of a mystery to me. I thought about Black Creek Marsh at dusk but I decided to hold off because it was getting late – after seven o’clock when I started walking home from Five Rivers.

To be honest, my plan for visiting Black Creek Marsh at dusk 🌆 wasn’t just for bird watching 🐦 or photos 📷 but in part because I was curious how effective the Permethrin would be in really buggy weather – that is with DEET on the face and arms. People swear by it and while I haven’t found any ticks on me yet and saw a mosquitoes collapse after crawling on my jeans 👖 I’m not totally convinced of the hype. I did spray my hat yesterday too. Unlike DEET I might also be able to safely apply it to the hammock which would help with the bugs when I’m lying there.

Tonight will be scattered sprinkles before 11pm, then showers likely, mainly after 3am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 50 at 9pm. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent 🌘 Moon with 19% illuminated. In four weeks on June 14 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303°) at 8:34 pm,🌄 which is 21 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. So the Gas Up tractor and agricultural festival is canceled for June. 🚜 I think that was kind of expected during the pandemic although they’re considering trying to reschedule for mid August. Could be hot then I’m thinking though. Assuming it’s even an option then – they didn’t seem too hopeful. 😔

Looking ahead, Strawberry Moon 🌕 is in 3 weeks and Fathers Day 👨 is in 4 weeks.

🇺🇸🦅Only 5 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🦅🇺🇸

I was doing some reading on the internet and found out that the lower part of Piseco Powley Road is still not fully rebuilt from the October 2019 storm and that the road is closed. ⛺ So I guess that’s out for the weekend. Hopefully soon though they’ll finish the rebuild and open the gates all the way. There are other options but with the nice weather expected and the state campgrounds closed they’ll fill up quickly.

So the original plan of delaying my Memorial Day Weekend for one week is back on the agenda. 🔙 That’s fine, it gives me more time to pack and potentially opens up more options as there will be fewer people camping, especially if I drive up Thursday evening or Friday morning on a non holiday weekend. I never did a spring trip this year with a long weekend so I have the time.

Come June for example, it’s likely Perkins Clearing Road and West River Road and White House in Wells will open. 🚧 But also I expect I could get that campsite up on Pumpkin Hollow Road when on a non holiday weekend. If it’s hot though it would be nice to be able to walk to water. Betty Brook or Duck Pond are good options in Schoharie County. 💭

East Branch Sacandaga River is fine but it’s noisy 🐠 and the river isn’t that great for fishing due to the fluctuating water levels. A drought in summer – as was a case a few years ago can leave the river with only a few inches of water. Right now, Cherry Ridge and Finger Lakes National Forest are closed for camping.

Maybe Moose River will be my summer vacation if Piseco Powley Road ⛺ is not rebuilt. While I assume ny mid summer that the Finger Lakes National Forest will reopen for camping if the pools and beaches aren’t open I’m sure if I’d want to do summer vacation there.

Other options include the Allegheny and Green Mountain National Forest. 🗻 The later is open but who knows if the current limits on out of state visitors will be lifted by summer. That Grout Pond beach is fun and some of sites along Forest Road 73 not only have good sun ☀ for solar but also cell reception.

May 17, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Pack Rat Day 🐀! I bet a lot of debris got burned up in people’s bonfires over the weekend 🔥 some of it not wood now that the spring time restrictions are over. As a farmer kid once told me back in the day, they can’t see the black smoke if you burn it at night.

Three weeks to Strawberry Moon 🍓. No its not the color of strawberry milk. I did see some Juneberries up hiking at Thacher Park yesterday. They are fun to pick and eat. The wild blueberries and black raspberries. 🍒 Oh sweet cherries. I do need to get to Schoharie Valley and get some fresh fruit come June. Even if Mine Kill is closed this summer there are other swimming holes. 🏊 But maybe Governor one percent will change his mind.

A little bit of blue sky today but not a lot. Partly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 48 degrees. A surprisingly nice spring day. It would have been nice to get out of town this weekend but the forecast was iffy and I things to do in town plus I’m broke. I mean I got paid last week but it seems like the money never lasts long enough. 💵

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 71 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. Southeast wind 3 to 8 mph. If it’s nice today, 🐦 I’ll grab my binoculars and head out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center to do some birding and exercise. 🏃 I’d kind of like this to be a stay home day, as I feel like I drive too much with buses being stopped 🚍 and needing to get on the internet from the library. 📚 I’ve really gotten into nature study lately. 🐸

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.8° from the due south horizon (-4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:33 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (298°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:27 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 58 seconds over yesterday.

It should be another nice mild night 🌃 for sitting out back, even if the stars ✨ aren’t that great. Got to enjoy the nice weather as long as possible before it gets super hot and muggy before winter returns. With the pandemic on tap, it could be a very different summer.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly after 4am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.❄

I finally got my 1,200 buck Donald Trump endorsed check. 📨 Happy Election Year! ☑ Corona 2020 for President. It ducking sucks that they couldn’t direct deposit but I’ll have to deposit it on Monday. I am getting good at driving my big jacked up truck through the ATM 🏧 lane. I’ll put $400 into savings and $800 into index funds. 〽I figure save the money now and eventually turn it into something fun in a decade or two from now like a tractor, 🚜 an AR-15 🔫 or something that makes black smoke and pretty colors in the burn pit. 🔥

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Strawberry Moon 🌕 when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1999.

The long weekend looks better now. 👌Next Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8am. ☀ Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

It’s starting to look like next weekend is back on ⛺ based on the forecast. That assumes that I can get Friday off which who knows. But I’m sure the forecast will turn to rain before that in Trump’s Amerika. I’ll have to make a decision before work tomorrow so I can decide to put in for Friday or not. I want to see when my screen tent is going to be delivered 🎪 as that will make all the difference with the black flies plus I don’t want it to be delivered while I’m not home. 🏡 Otherwise there is always next week.
