Good evening! Mostly cloudy ☁and 70 degrees in Speculator, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 57 degrees.

I decided to stay up here at least one more night 🌃 so I could look at the stars, ✨ but it seems like it clouded up. I’m going to take a wait and see approach to tomorrow – if it’s really wet I’ll work from my truck at the library and then head home. 💻 I have more cell service here so I might be able to work from camp but it depends on how much data I need for work.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 58 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 9pm. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Strugeon 🐡 Moon is on Monday, August 3. The darkest hour is at 1:04 am, followed by dawn at 5:03 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:37 am in the east-northeast (61°) and last for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunrise is 58 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:19 am with sun in the east-northeast (68°). Tonight will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 77 degrees at 2pm. It was humid. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

Well I’ll see how things play out tomorrow. 🔥 It’s nice laying back on the hammock and I had a small fire but I’m going to head to bed soon. 😴

In four weeks on August 18 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (289°) at 7:55 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 34 seconds earlier then tonight. I’m thinking about hiking back to Broomstick Lake depending on how hot it is up north. Otherwise I’ll just set up camp ⛺ and head to the Potholers. 🏊

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drives his car off a bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, dies. 🚙 And in 1984, there were McDonald’s massacre in San Ysidro, California: In a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. 🔫 After that, California implemented strict new gun control in that state, and there have been no more mass shootings.

Yesterday I went to John Wolcott house to look at more historical documents. 🔎 I was quite interested in the history file 📂 we found about Fort Orange. It wasn’t too bad wearing masks 😷 for two hours trying to stay six feet apart ↔ with the air conditioning it was quite bearable. They really have done more to preserve the Fort Orange ruins.

I was thinking it’s been over four months since I’ve been downtown. 🌆 I was watching the old music 🎶 video I posted if Bill Withers Lean on Me and thinking about all of the characters you miss not spending time in the city. Urban grit and grime is certainly different than life in the suburbs. To be fair, I saw more share of ramshackle homes and farms in Vermont and Rennselear County 🐐 last week but its different than the people in the city.

I saw the Wally World had drop in LED fluorescent bulbs 💡 for like $7 so I bought one and tried it out in my fixtures. It’s supposed to work with the magnetic ballast but I couldn’t get it to pass enough current to make it light properly. It’s supposed to work but your supposed to pull the starter on the hot start models – although my doesn’t have a starter because it’s push button start. Tomorrow I’ll take it apart and figure out if I can bypass the ballast – it’s a very simple magnetic ballast.

In 1956, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus closes its very last “Big Tent” show 🎪 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, due to changing economics all subsequent circus shows will be held in arenas. 🎇 Now the only thing in tents is fireworks dealers and car dealers when their show rooms are being renovated.

Sunny and hot this weekend. ☀ Saturday, mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 91. West wind 5 to 7 mph. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Sunday, mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 94. Maximum dew point of 70 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

Definitely going to be a hot weekend. ☀ I’m heading out to Pisceo Powley Road for a three day weekend. Cool off at the Potholers and just check it out and see how damaged and changed the land is up there after the big storm last autumn. 🍂 I haven’t decided if I will bring my kayak. I might not because I’m thinking I may stay in the Adirondacks for a good portion of the week and I don’t want to have to take the kayak on and off for the solar.

Payne Mountain with Cedar River Flow Beyond It

July 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly sunny with fog and 65 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. 🌁 Calm wind. The dew point is 62 degrees. A rather pleasant morning with a breeze on a soon to be hot old July day. Clouds might keep it cooler though.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny. ☀ But later on becoming cloudy 🌧, with a high of 78 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 4pm. Already seeing the clouds start to push in a bit Light southeast wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

I have a few projects to work on today 📝 but I expect a fairly quiet day working from the hammock to replying to emails 📧 and taking calls 📞 from my hammock. The work laptop is charging using the solar power now, I’m sure there will be some kind of project come the afternoon to do. 💼 Probably at four o’clock. I do want to hit the swimming hole 🏊 later.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3° from the due south horizon (-1.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:50 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:05 pm, which is 29 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:51 pm. At sunset, look out for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a east-southeast breeze at 15 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over yesterday.

I think my plan for today is to work in the Green Mountains 🗻 and maybe hit the swimming hole a few times and then head home after work, assuming it’s not raining too hard for unsafe driving 🚘. It’s been a fun week but I don’t want to camp in the pouring rain 💦 which it looks like we are right on to get a direct hit from Tropical Storm Fay here in the Green Mountains. Plus I’m low on ice but I’ve eaten most of the pershibles.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. 🌧 Low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. 🏖️ East wind 15 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. Yeah purty wet. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1986.

I keep finding litter 🚯 around this campsite which I keep picking up. Some people are pigs. 🐽 I know that when I camp, anything that doesn’t completely burnt gets packed out for recycling. ♻ I don’t put aluminum or glass in the fire pit and while I may burn out cans to clean them of food residue, I always clean out the fire pit and remove the cans and any unburnt plastic or similar residue. I bury my poop 💩 and I try to leave wood at the fireplace and tidy up the site before I leave. Nobody wants to see or smell your pile of poop or deal with your garbage. 🚮

On this day in 1890, Wyoming is admitted to the United States as the 44th US State. Many liberals regard that as a mistake, although it has some beautiful country out in Yellowstone and lots of grass to feed cows and oil and coal. 🗻 And in 1962, Telstar, the world’s first communication satellite is launched. 📡

Tomorrow will have showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. 🌧 High of 78 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 2pm. 🏖️ Southwest wind around 6 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1936.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 77. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

Good evening! Mostly clear and 71 degrees at the Green Mountain National Forest. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends Tuesday around 11 pm. 😓

Kind of a hot day but until later in the afternoon the heat wasn’t that bad. 😰 I could always hop in the Deerfield River if it got too hot plus I had the fan blowing on me most of the day while working. Busy day at work but I did get to hit the swimming 🏊 hole a few times. Cooled off enough to have a little fire.

One of the locals mentioned that there is a place up the road that sells firewood 🔥 something I’ll have to keep in mind for future visits. I was able to cobble together enough wood for the fire plus some camp garbage I had to burn. I also had a bag of litter 🚮 I picked up, and when burning that I found a discarded butane container which I pulled out of the fire just in time.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, partly cloudy , with a low of 63 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 9pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1963.

The darkest hour is at 12:58 am, followed by dawn at 4:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:23 am in the east-northeast (58°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 44 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:05 am with sun in the east-northeast (65°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 51 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 12 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers before 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2pm and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 75 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

I think based on the latest forecast I’m going to head home 🏡 on Friday evening after work. Maybe hit the swimming hole a few times tomorrow but I don’t want to camp in the rain. And it’s likely going to be super wet here Friday night into Saturday. 💦

In four weeks on August 6 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (293°) at 8:06 pm,🌄 which is 25 minutes and 37 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had humid, mostly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 84 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1900.

Dusk

July 6, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 67 degrees in Stratton, VT. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 57 degrees. With that breeze it feels a bit cold at times, especially with the breeze, and laying back in the hammock.

It was a pretty nice day up in Vermont, lots of sun ☀ and not too hot. Battery bank and laptop got close to fully charged despite using the laptop for about half the day for finishing up a report and what seemed like an endless Zoom meeting. 📹 I just had this fear that my internet connection was going to drop during the meeting or the cellular internet connection would have problems but it all worked out fine.

No fire 🔥 tonight, instead I had a late dinner after my hour and half stroll down to Shep Meadow.

While Forest Road 71 is a nice walk with scenic curves and gentle grades, I don’t think I realized how long some of those grades were until I walked them. 🚶

I also spent an hour rereading part of the Cabin Porn book 📙 I got out of the library, studying the pictures more carefully of the various cabins and alternative living arrangements. 🏡 As much as I like camping I hope some day – maybe in a decade – I’ll have a simple place out in the country I’ll call home. 🐐 🐔 I have to say that the lantern 🏮 is burning bright 🔆 these days which is good for reading 📖 and the tent 🎪 was quite bug free. 🐜

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 60 degrees at 3am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11pm. South wind 3 to 8 mph. Honestly with the clear skies, I could see it getting even colder. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous 🌖 Moon with 95% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:06 pm. The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 4:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:20 am in the east-northeast (57°) and last for 3 minutes and 27 seconds. Sunrise is 40 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 6:03 am with sun in the east-northeast (65°). Tonight will have 8 hours and 46 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers between noon and 2pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 74 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 3pm. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

It doesn’t seem like its going to be as hot tomorrow as I thought it would be at least up north here. 🗻 But I still think I need to head to West Wardsboro after work to get ice. And maybe a quick swing by Grout Pond to swim 🏊 and get cleaned off. Then I should be good until Thursday or Friday depending on how the ice holds up with the heat. I don’t think it will be nearly as warm here especially as I’m on a bit of a ledge with a good breeze and a fair bit of shade. 🍃 I don’t expect the weather to be amazing but I’m sure it will be better than at home.

In four weeks on August 3 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (295°) at 8:10 pm,🌄 which is 23 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. Days by then will be getting noticeably shorter, with the sun much closer to the west. In 2019 on that day, we had thunderstorm and temperatures between 85 and 66 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1975.

Well I think I’m going to wash up and head to bed. 😴 I often stay up too late when camping and my sleep suffers as the sun rises early this time of year, although this campsite is nestled in the mountains so the actual sunrise 🌅 is later here then the official time would suggest.
