August 12, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Sunny and 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees.

This morning was a bit more breezy than expected but that’s kind of the norm on the Hector Backbone. ๐Ÿƒ Kind of a quiet and lazy morning today, I’m in no rush to get going. ๐Ÿ’ค I kind of wanted to catch up on sleep and avoid a crazy morning rushing to get to the park before the parking lot fills and closes. That said, it seems like my fears ๐Ÿ˜ฑ are rather misplaced – there has been no evidence of that happening this week. Much less hot and humid.

Enjoyed a nice quiet morning in the hammock ๐Ÿ˜ƒ looking at the trees swaying above and just relaxing. Monday and Tuesday were too much of a rush. Vacation should be about relaxing. ๐Ÿ’ค I really am enjoying camping ๐Ÿ• where I have no cellphone reception ๐Ÿ”• as it keeps me from constantly checking social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Facebook is nice but it sure is addictive.

I am thinking today of exploring the Caywood Point historic site ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and if there is a place to fish down there ๐ŸŽฃ tossing in a line. I wanted to get night crawlers ๐Ÿ› but I can get them today when I shop ๐Ÿช. I am going to leave the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ on the truck and I might put in at the Hector Town Park where there is supposedly a boat launch and paddle around mid lake. ๐Ÿ›ฅ In the evening I’ll probably go down to Watkins Glen for ice and groceries and maybe a brief swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ to close out the day.

This afternoon will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. North wind around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1944.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:13 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:35 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:43 pm, which is one minute and 25 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and one minute of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday.

It looks like the party ๐ŸŽ‰ broke up this morning based on the number of cars going by so tonight I might hike down to Foster Pond and see if I can see more of the percid metroid showers ๐ŸŒ . I am thinking it might be a nice clear night for that with less humidity for better visibility. Sitting along the pond provides a good view of the stars โœจ. Hopefully the kids ๐Ÿง’ ๐Ÿง‘didn’t trash the area too much.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. Calm wind. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1957.

Shopping ๐Ÿ›’ at Wally World the other day I couldn’t get any more paper bowls ๐Ÿฅฃ so I ended up getting Styrofoam. I always used to use Styrofoam while camping as I figured it burned better, was cheaper and didn’t involve cutting down trees ๐Ÿ”ฅ but lately I’ve been using paper products when camping because I was reading how noxious the blowing agents are for expanded polystyrene and it stinks and burns burn if you don’t have a hot fire. Paper ain’t great either – it’s plastic coated – but in some ways it’s a better. I don’t know, I use regular reusable stuff at home ๐Ÿก but camping it’s just easier and cleaner to let the fire do the dishes. Often my water supply of potable ๐Ÿšฐ water is limited. When I have my off-grid homestead with the burn barrels for unlimited trash disposal ๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ I’ll have to decide what is the right option for me – water might be precious ๐Ÿ’ฆ .

I’ve continued reading Gebe Brown’s book ๐Ÿ“™ on Regenerative Agriculture. It one part ideological but also kind of a rethinking about orthodoxy when it comes to agriculture. ๐Ÿšœ When he gets off his high horse ๐Ÿด he actually has some interesting ideas. It really makes me think when I own my off-grid property I’ll put a premium on diversity of plants ๐ŸŒฟ and wildlife and work hard to remove and burn up invasive species on my land. I have no moral quams about using glyphosate or other pesticides responsibility to manage land and I do see a lot of benefits to planting milkweed ๐Ÿฆ‹ and other native species ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ to bring in wildlife for hunting ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ‡ and observation ๐Ÿ”ญ๐Ÿ”Ž. It’s really beautiful what things were like at that farm I visited the other week for the party ๐ŸŽ‰ where they had irradicated nearly all invasives in favor of natives.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 64 at 9am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Honestly, if the weather is going to be bad ๐ŸŒง๏ธ I’d rather it happen on the day vacation ends. It seems like a busy week at work and I’m sure things will be crazy next week once I clock in. ๐Ÿ•’ But so it goes, I have to make money ๐Ÿ’ต to have money to spend on vacation.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:20 pm. On that day in 2019, we had sunny and temperatures between 78 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1948.

August 11, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to September ๐ŸŽ. Mostly sunny, hazy hot and humid and 83 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 11 am. ๐Ÿ˜“

Going to be another hot day today. Loaded up the kayak on the truck ๐Ÿšš but first I was hoping to spend the morning at the pool – but it looks closed today per the sign. โ›ฑ๏ธIt was very breezy at camp this morning at 1,800 feet but less so at 475 ft at Watkins Glen. Hoping I can get parking at the boat launch – already filling up. ๐Ÿ…ฟ

Last night was pretty hot too. ๐Ÿ”ฅNo campfire last night and I used the fan in my truck cap for most of the night as even up here high on the backbone ๐Ÿ—ป it was quite muggy and uncomfortable. Maybe nothing like a in the city but so be it. I gathered some wood though and tonight I’ll probably have a small fire if only because it’s been a few days.

The muffins ๐Ÿš I got from Walmart yesterday with some cold coffee made for a pretty good breakfast. I also bought cereal ๐Ÿฅฃ yesterday but I’ll save that for a future day. Maybe tomorrow. I wanted a quick and easy breakfast as I wanted to make sure I got to the park ๐Ÿž early so I’d get parking.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Mostly sunny and hot ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 92 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

Hoping for better weather than yesterday, as it was so hot and humid yesterday morning. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ And then by the time I planned to swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ there was that constant line of thunderstorms to the south. That’s why I am not going to hike early in the morning today. I was such a sweaty pig ๐Ÿ–yesterday and I only got five minutes in the pool due to thunderstorms. โ›ˆ

If the pool doesn’t open today, ๐Ÿ›ถ I’ll head down to the boat launch. The water ๐Ÿ’ฆ is relatively calm and will be fine in the canal and if I stick close to shore. If I can’t get parking at the boat launch, I’ll probably get some ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar ๐Ÿง I might than go down to Cayon Point to fish ๐Ÿ  but that was more the plan tomorrow.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:36 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:15 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 82 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 8pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

One of the worst things about being in the Finger Lakes is the winos ๐Ÿท who are more preoccupied with finding the next winery to taste and they’re driving ๐Ÿš˜ slow and irregularly after doing tastings all day. They drive 25 mph in a 55 mph and slam on their brakes when they see a sign ๐Ÿ›‘ for the next watering hole ๐Ÿ•ณ. Almost slammed into one of them today.

Seneca County is infamous for the state’s highest fatality rate from DWI, drunk driving is a serious problem in wine country ๐Ÿคช although that’s not something that the economic development people like to talk about. I like taking 414 as it’s fast and doesn’t have any speed traps or small towns but the slow moving drivers who slam on their brakes when they see the next watering hole on the road is so obnoxious. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until September ๐ŸŽ when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:09 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies with q few rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.

August 10, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Partly cloudy โ˜๏ธand 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

I don’t think I would describe today as bad day, ๐Ÿ˜’but things didn’t quite go exactly to plan. While I did get a shower ๐Ÿšฟ in and about five minutes of swimming โšก it wasn’t the full day of swimming ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I had planned. I was prepared for thunderstorms โ›ˆ in the evening but not the countless rumbles of thunder after 2 pm. I guess I can’t complain about the rain much – I didn’t get wet until very briefly at Clute Park ๐Ÿ’ง and I was dry by the time I got back to camp.

I like the Watkins Glen State Park pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ a lot but this year is like no other. During the pandemic we are all living through I was really freaked out by the crowds at the entrance and the pool. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง While I’ve never been a real people person, crowds are scary during a pandemic. ๐Ÿ‘พEven parts of the trail – until I got west of the trail were kind of scary with the crowds. I tried to maintain my social distance and flip the mask over my face ๐Ÿ˜ท but sometimes it’s just scary. I want to enjoy my vacation in these most scary times, but I also don’t want to end up on a ventilator choking for life, all alone in a hospital ๐Ÿฅ.

I couldn’t get goggles anywhere in Watkins Glen ๐Ÿ‘€ so I guess I will have to do without. Hopefully my eyes won’t get too irritated from the pool chlorine. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ That said after today’s experience I don’t expect to be spend a lot more time in the parks although I do like a good shower ๐Ÿšฟ or swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ while camping. I thought a Monday at the parks in August would be a heck of a lot quieter. It seems like everybody is craving outdoor recreation during the pandemic. ๐Ÿž Or maybe it’s just I notice people and crowds a lot more during the pandemic. ๐Ÿ˜ท I can wear a mask and wash my hands ๐Ÿ‘ good bit there is only so much I can do.

Glen Dairy Bar was good ๐Ÿฅค, ultimately I decided on a strawberry ๐Ÿ“ slushy over ice cream. No complaints there, I could taste the pieces of strawberry in it. I am sure I’ll be back for more tomorrow. Thinking ice cream tomorrow. That banana ๐ŸŒ sundae I saw somebody have looked amazing. Of course with social distancing these days the lines look much larger but they were busy too with the hot weather. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ

Sat down by Seneca Lake for a while ๐Ÿผ/strong>๒Žฑกnd it was quite pleasant but a fair number of people around. Started to walk along the shoreline and the sky just opened up and started to pour. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Ran back to my truck and by the time I got to Bennettsville the sky was clear. โ˜€ Go figure. It looks like they got pounded with rain just north of Elmira today. I wonder if there was flooding or storm damage down that way ?

Made up hot sausage paddy burgers ๐Ÿ” with American cheese which when the bun is well toasted and with some ketchup is quite the treat. I often also put red sauce on the patties but not this time as I decided to bring only one cooler so I have limited space for cold stuff. I actually like them better than beef burgers ๐Ÿฅฉ but don’t tell a cow that. I also had a couple of beers ๐Ÿปto wash the day away.

I normally bring too coolers but last minute on Saturday I decided to leave one home to save space. ๐Ÿ—ƒ I am already regretting that decision as it limits meal choices. ๐Ÿด In the early spring or late fall one cooler is fine but this time of year I like to have two so I can store both cold and cool foods. But I get tired of always buying so much ice and having to move and clean with two coolers all the time. โ„ Ice takes up a lot of space but true automotive refrigerators use a lot of electricity expensive and aren’t real energy efficient. โšก

Tonight will become mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at pm. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 56% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:50 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 24. The darkest hour is at 1:14 am, followed by dawn at 5:40 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:11 am in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:50 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Sunny and hot ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 93 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

Tomorrow planning on another early start, ๐ŸŒ… I think first heading for a good swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ at the Watkins Glen State Park Pool then paddling from the new boat ๐Ÿ›ฅ launch just east of Clute Park. Lake was very placid today and I expect the same tomorrow but I’m more concerned about thunderstorms tomorrow. โ›ˆ I got some nice muffins to have with my coffee โ˜• tomorrow morning.

Heading to bed ๐Ÿ› early so I can get up early. Between the clouds ๐ŸŒฅ and the fact I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด decided against a hike to Foster Pond tonight. Still a ton of people camping up there tonight. I came out here a large part for that great pool I’ll be disappointed if I can’t have some good fun in the sun tomorrow.

In four weeks on September 7 the sun will be setting in the west (278ยฐ) at 7:30 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 73 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1945. Just another reminder that autumn is coming.

Looking ahead, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 2 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 4 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is a month away, Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 months, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 16 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 4 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 19 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 20 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 23 weeks, Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 23 weeks, 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 24 weeks, February ๐ŸŒง is in 25 weeks and Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is in 6 months. So you have a lot of time for garbage to accumulate on your computers before it’s time for a big bonfire. ๐Ÿ’พ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Hot but nice morning

August 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Rain showers and mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sun and 65 degrees, in a hammock at Cole Hill State Forest in Berne, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees. The skies will clear around 3 pm.

So last night I went to Grace’s summer party at her mountain farm. ๐Ÿ‘ Beautiful land and old hippie type of farm house ๐Ÿก surrounded by wildflower gardens up a steep mountain. She’s still working in Albany, going to be a heck of a commute for her come winter.

Afterwards I decided to spend the night up at Cole Hill State Forest. โ›บ Just a simple set up with a hammock strung between some trees and flashlight ๐Ÿ”ฆ. I didn’t bother with a fire, I just laid back listening some podcasts under the moonlit skies. I didn’t even pack anything for breakfast, I’ll eat when I get home.

It wasn’t a bad evening ๐Ÿ’ฆalthough there was a a few rain showers during the middle of the night and I ended up splashing DEET on due to the mosquitoes. ๐Ÿœ

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฉ, with a high of 82 degrees at 4pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 71 at 2pm. South wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

I have the kayak and fishing pole on me ๐ŸŽฃ and I’m thinking of heading over to White Birch Pond to do some fishing later. I guess it depends on how hungry I am or if how much rain we get early ๐Ÿ’ง, I don’t really have any additional food on me. As morning has broke the day has gotten nicer but there is still a lot of storms popping up on the radar. โšฝ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-5.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:37 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (295ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:47 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the southeast (127ยฐ) at an altitude of 6ยฐ from the horizon, 241,004 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:28 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 71 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.

I tell you, every time I am out in the country ๐Ÿฎ I am super jealous about those who make a living and a place to live in the mountains. ๐Ÿ—ป Some day I tell myself, I just need to work hard and save more money.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 10pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒฉ, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 7pm. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1976.

Post

July 23, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 70 degrees in Speculator, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 61 degrees.

I had some tuna salad for dinner ๐Ÿฒ then I had a small fire and laid back in the hammock. ๐Ÿ”ฅ A very starry night. โœจ Reading ๐Ÿ“– that old Kerner Commission report is fascinating. I wonder if I can get a paper copy at the library to read more carefully. Well illustrated with photos and graphics too.

Stayed in camp โ›บ and worked from here. Not much rain, just a few showers. I took everything down planning to head into town and because I didn’t want my gear to get wet but they turned out to be a non issue. No bugs so that was nice. Exploring Old NY 8B on foot was interesting, had to have been quite the road back in the day. Austin Falls was pretty first time I’ve been there. ๐Ÿ“ท Uploading pictures tomorrow. That campsite at Robb Creek Mill ruins looks really pretty but I didn’t get a good look as somebody had their camping gear set up but wasn’t there. I think that’s the site where Robert Garrow murdered those campers. ๐Ÿ€ I’m just hoping I didn’t brush any poison ivy along the river, it’s thick along Old Route 8B.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10pm. North wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon with 13% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west (278ยฐ) at an altitude of 7ยฐ from the horizon, some 228,308 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by January 12th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the west-northwest (285ยฐ) at 10:41 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 3. The darkest hour is at 1:04 am, followed by dawn at 5:05 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:39 am in the east-northeast (61ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 59 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:20 am with sun in the east-northeast (68ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 56 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 27th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8am. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1941.

As I got a big project in for tomorrow I’ll be working all day in Speculator probably at the park in the morning by Lake Pleasant for number ๐Ÿ”ข crunching then down to the library for internet research in the afternoon. ๐Ÿ“ถ Then I think I’m going to go to Piseco-Powley Road Friday and Saturday nights and spend most of Saturday at the Potholers. Then come home on Sunday. ๐Ÿก Going to continue to be extremely hot next week but I feel like I should work from home at least every other week to save expenses of travel. โ›ฝ Gas is cheap but I’m still doing a lot of miles overall and ice and food adds up when you are buying it for camping.

In four weeks on August 20 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) at 7:52 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 54 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had a hot late summer day that was very sunny with temperatures between 87 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1937.

Looking ahead, I’m going to sleep. ๐Ÿ›Œ Good night.

Swamp at Wakely Mountain

July 22, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 69 degrees in Speculator, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees.

I think I made the right choice to stay up north as it’s a very pleasant evening. Not going to stay up beyond ten but I’m hopeful to see the comet ๐ŸŒŸ tonight. So far I’ve only seen Vega. Some high clouds but I’m hoping for a very starry night from this open sky campsite. A little fire tonight, cooled off a bit after dark. Kept the lights simple tonight – just the flag light, campfire and lantern ๐Ÿฎ on low to allow me to better enjoy the site. No screen tent ๐ŸŽช tonight as the bugs ain’t bad and I didn’t want to deal with wet gear.

This evening I hiked back to Fly Creek Road and down to the Sacandaga River to wash the sand off my itchy feet. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ I checked out the area where Robert Garrow murdered those campers nearly 50 years ago. ๐Ÿ”ช I couldn’t find the exact site, I may not have walked down far enough. ๐Ÿ˜• Pretty area though but very overgrown. I was surprised, the old road is poured concrete with asphalt coat – hasn’t been paved in probably 70 years and still in passable shape. I was glad to get that sand off my feet, they were itchy enough to make me think I might have gotten athletes foot from the beach, like last time. I’ve been wearing my sandals a lot more lately to try to keep my feet drier. Athletes foot doesn’t bother me but jock itch is bad when you have itchy balls ๐Ÿ†.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 4am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 63 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 11pm. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Seems like it will stay to the south. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1981.

Today wasn’t a bad, worked from the town park โ›ฒ and then went during the beach during lunch to swim ๐ŸŠ then spent the balance of the day working at the library ๐Ÿ“š. All day was rain free which was nice, well except for a brief shower when I was working from my truck. It’s nice being only five minutes away from Speculator – makes it easy with work. Library parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ lot was packed midday with people using the Wi-Fi – a lot of children ๐Ÿšธ – must be doing the – lessons. Internet was slow for a while. ๐Ÿข

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon with 6% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the west (281ยฐ) at an altitude of 12ยฐ from the horizon, some 230,253 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by January 13th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) at 10:11 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 3. The darkest hour is at 1:04 am, followed by dawn at 5:04 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:38 am in the east-northeast (61ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:19 am with sun in the east-northeast (68ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 54 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 1pm. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 78 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 8am. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1955.

Tomorrow will be similar to today, ๐Ÿฌ although I’ll need to run to the store for ice and food ๐Ÿฒ. It should be another nice evening tomorrow and then Friday after work I’m heading back to Piseco Powley Road for the weekend, probably camp farther north, maybe at a site I’ve never camped at before. Probably visit the Potholers Saturday and then head home relatively early come Sunday.

In four weeks on August 19 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) at 7:54 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 14 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had humid, partly cloudy, mist and temperatures between 86 and 69 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1899.

July 22, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? A Speculator Hump Day, of course. Cloudy and 72 degrees this morning. โ˜ That said, expected though this afternoon. โ˜” There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 11am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 4pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฉ, with a high of 75 degrees at 5pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 11am. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 74 degrees. I think we had better weather than when I was in the Finger Lakes. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

Looking at the radar and not wanting to deal with wet camping gear ๐Ÿ’ฆI took down camp this morning. Right now I’m still at camp watching for emails ๐Ÿ“ง and text from work but I can be in Speculator in ten ๐Ÿ”Ÿ minutes should I need full internet access ๐Ÿ“ถ for work.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Sun angle is already getting a fair bit weaker but I’m also farther north. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:49 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (292ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (299ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:31 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 9:03 pm, which is 54 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (282ยฐ) at an altitude of 11ยฐ from the horizon, 230,245 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:48 pm. At sunset, look for likely rain ๐ŸŒง with thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 52 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 10pm and 2am, then a chance of showers after 2am. Some of the storms could be severe. Patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฉ, with a low of 64 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 9pm. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1981.

Today in 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer is arrested in Milwaukee after police discover human remains in his apartment.๐Ÿ˜› Remember if you eat other humans, to take our the garbage regularly. ๐Ÿšฏ Most ag schools have things posted on their websites about composting animal carcasses in manure, hay and wood chips. Gotta tie down the nitrogen with carbon to reduce the smell. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ Good to return organic matter to the soil. Two years later, Great Flood of 1993: Levees near Kaskaskia, Illinois rupture, forcing the entire town to evacuate by barges operated by the Army Corps of Engineers.๐Ÿšค I bet some rednecks in hick towns had some wild bonfires after that, getting rid of all their moldy, flooded junk. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Small town life is fun.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 83. Maximum dew point of 64 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

It kind of would be fun to stay through the weekend โ˜€ and maybe do round two at Piseco Powley but tonight into tomorrow looks rather wet and I don’t have much extra for food ๐Ÿฒ and clothes. ๐Ÿ‘š I guess it depends on the weather later this afternoon. I got to have enough power to work and I don’t want to spent two days cooped ๐Ÿ” up in my truck with the windows up working there. If I do go home, I could do something fun around home like fishing at Patridge Run. ๐ŸŽฃ Or even tent or hammock camping at a local state forest.

Of the what the hell things this morning ๐Ÿ’ต I got a odd text from my broker about them doing the regular deposit into my IRA. Not sure why they started sending me text alerts โš  today, but I signed up for them a while back for security purposes. I’ve been maximizing my IRA for a while now, because I want to avoid paying state taxes and make sure when I have land and off grid property I’ll have the money I need for implements and other consumables. Plus it’s nice knowing that money will be locked ๐Ÿ”’ away until I’m 60, growing quietly and off my books. I don’t have to pay taxes on interest or dividends like I do other regular investments.
