December 17, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday after the Snow Storm. ๐ŸŒจ Thanks to the Corona there are no more snow days but also no more buses to tromp through ๐Ÿ‘ข in the snow Next Thursday is Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ…. Snow and 17 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a north breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 4. Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธLong cold period ahead but my apartment is eaem

Honestly I am not impacted by the storm ๐ŸŒจ, as I don’t have to go anywhere today as I’ll work from home. ๐Ÿก I do dig out my truck. I did knock the snow off my truck and later on today I’ll pull off the tarp and shovel off the truck. ๐Ÿšš This evening I’ll probably go out for my walk once the sidewalks are plowed. It’s a lot of snow but so be it. The Adirondacks didn’t get a lot snow although more than expected but I don’t think I’ll get up there for camping ๐Ÿ• at least not until Christmas Day. ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿปโ„

Work has been busy the past few days ๐Ÿ“, but I’ve been getting good at moving files ๐Ÿ“‚ between my phone and laptop. I actually prefer using my phone over the computer because I can carry it around in my hand ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿป and I’m not forced to be chained to a desk. ๐Ÿ”— Next week I have to renew my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ plan and I’m going to month to month and I will then have 20 gb of Hotspot data for things I can’t do through my phone. ๐Ÿ“ถ I expect another busy day, I have an afternoon meeting and more plans to review.

Today will snow, mainly before noon. The snow could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒจ High of 23 degrees at 12pm. 12 degrees below normal. North wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1984. 11.1 inches of snow fell back in 1970.โ„

Going to be cold the next few days. โ„ But except for digging out my truck and my morning and evening walks ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I don’t have to leave home. My heat is working well this year, and that little heater I bought the other day quickly takes the chill off the room and when used occasionally it doesn’t cost that much to operate – according to my Kill-a-Watt meter. Obviously it wouldn’t work with my inverter or solar power but when I have my own land I’ll have a woodstove for heat. โ™จ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 20 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the south-southwest (210ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 238,365 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 22 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 11 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 3 at 5am; North wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1919.

I am continuing to experiment with the 3D mapping ๐Ÿ—บ feature of QGIS. I’m thinking about doing some snow โ„ depth maps. Among other things that I can do with the technology. I kind of wish I had regular internet at home for WMS streams ๐ŸŒ so I could do more renderings using aerial photos

The other day I downloaded the first volume of the Foxfire Book ๐Ÿ“™ and have been reading it on my phone. I actually like reading books on my phone – the pages flip like a book but my phone is lightweight and fits in a single hand.

Today in 1777 during the American Revolution, France formally recognizes the United States. ๐ŸŸ Now we celebrate ๐ŸŽ‰ with freedom fries in PFOA lined containers although not for much longer.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 42 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015.

Even on a gray day, hiking the farm tower is nice

Winter camping in the Finger Lakes National Forest last year

One year ago I today started my week long winter camping adventure in the Finger Lakes National Forest… 🎄

Rise and Shine, Finger Lakes Campers

I was planning on going to the Finger Lakes during mid November but an early November snow storm and work came up. I found a relatively calm winter week in December to take off and spend in a hot tent during Black Powder Season a year ago, starting tonight. There were some snow squalls when I was out there dropping a few inches but the road was plowed and I stayed around camp the bad weather days.

It definitely was a new adventure for me – a week camped out on the high point of Hector Backbone during December with nearly a foot of snow on the ground (unexpectedly). I didn’t expect so much snow but the road was plowed and things worked out.

The whole week never got above freezing except for the last day when I took down camp. Some of the nights were in the single digits like tonight. With the heater, a roaring campfire and a decent amount of winter gear it never was that cold although several nights I retired to bed fairly early as the nights are long – even with the sunset being 15-20 minutes later than Albany.

Winter camping is kind of unique and pretty. The snow gives the land a very different appearance, changes the way the woods looks. The cold is actually quite refreshing and as long as you have a way to get warm quickly – the heater in the tent – I was quite comfortable, sometimes spending the bulk of the day curled up by a book reading. I used quite a bit of propane – maybe 5 gallons for the week as I had it filled midweek but propane is cheap enough that even if it set me back $15 I had a great time. Damn food and dish soap kept freezing hard by the end of the week.

I want to do more winter camping but it can be difficult with the snow blocking off the back country roads and parking areas. But certainly that winter camping trip was memorable and quite enjoyable.

Shed-to-Homes and Cabins

I often read a lot about alternative living arrangements from the modern suburbanite way of living. I donโ€™t want a 3,000 square feet home with vinyl siding, Iโ€™d be quite happy with a small floor plan structure that is easy to clean. Iโ€™ve been reading a lot about cabins, tiny homes, shed-to-home and off-grid-living to see what kind of options are available today. Lots of land, tiny house is what I would prefer. Shelter is important,

The Shed-to-Homes, which are popping up like daisies in the rural south are quite interesting. They are a little more problematic in the north due to concerns over snow-loading, insulation, and zoning codes due to size of the beams theyโ€™re built with — below the 6 inches state code requires. They can be done, and Iโ€™ve seen them done in a few places of Rural New York but theyโ€™re a bit challenging to get approved with state and local codes, especially if they are a permanent foundation. That said, Iโ€™m not really interested in setting down roots in New York State. Too expensive, too many regulations, too anti-second amendment and too opposed to self-reliance. Itโ€™s fine living in an apartment in New York, but itโ€™s not my future.

Some of the smaller cabins Iโ€™ve seen are quite nice too. I was very impressed with the Thomas Mountain Cabin that the DEC recently burnt to the ground and hauled off to thel andfill. Cabins are typically much more robust structure, and free of some of the formaldehyde treated wood that is commonly used to build the shed-to-homes. They are somewhat more expensive, and pre-built you are a lot more limited to customizing the building. I want to go totally off-grid and minimalist. A so complicated, full-featured cabin is not something Iโ€™m really interested in. I would rather have something I could do the wiring myself on, primarily focused on 12 volt, low voltage, low amperage design primarily for LED-based lighting and a few higher amperage drawing things like an energy-efficient refrigerator/freezer, water pump, and a laptop charger.

Tiny homes more generally are interesting too. The smaller the home, the easier to heat with wood or maybe anthracite coal. Well insulated building, they will use a lot less fuel and can be heated with smaller fires. Less area to clean and maintain, less area to collect stuff that becomes clutter. Iโ€™m not into all of the fancy artsy designs, Iโ€™m more concerned with what is durable, inexpensive, and easy to clean. My truck camper is nice, but itโ€™s not insulated, itโ€™s unheated and itโ€™s a bit to small to really spend much time in except for bedtime.

Whatever I end up doing, once I have the money, knowledge and technical capacity, itโ€™s not going to be the boring conventional way of living. I want to have my freedom, not be dependent on the fossil-fuel grid or all of the modern ways that people take for granted. I want to be able to have money for nice toys like four wheelers and guns, be able to burn wood and trash, shoot guns and ride four wheelers in my backyard, and just be left alone by the government.

November 23, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Next Monday is Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŒ•. Rain is pulling out and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a southwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Kind of a dark and dreary morning โ˜๏ธ and I had no milk ๐Ÿฅ› so I had to run to the store and buy more milk. ๐Ÿฎ I probably should have gotten an earlier start but too bad. I think I’m going to work from home today and then maybe catch a bus downtown to film ๐Ÿ“ผ some more of the John Wolcott documentary. Or maybe just go into the office tomorrow to do paperwork ๐Ÿ“„ and then go over to John’s house to work on files ๐Ÿ“‚ if he is available. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป Cleared out enough to walk this morning and it’s quite mild but damp. Nice and warm in my apartment as I left the heat turned up last night. โ™จ

Today will have showers, mainly before 10am. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 46 degrees at 7am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 21st. Southwest wind 8 to 18 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 1931. 5.0 inches of snow fell back in 1943.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:43 am with sun having an altitude of 26.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:44 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 4:57 pm, which is 37 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (139ยฐ) at an altitude of 30ยฐ from the horizon, 248,045 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 11pm and 1am. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 32 degrees at 4am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 16th. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 2000.

Sunday dinner at the folks house ๐Ÿฒ was nice. Even if it was around tray tables on opposite sides of the living room. ๐Ÿฆƒ We are doing the same for Thanksgiving – just the three of us although with the pandemic getting worse it might be the last time I’ll be over there for a while if they go into lockdown.

While I was there, I downloaded several of the S. Beers Maps of Capital Region towns from 1866 ๐Ÿ—บ and started georefrencing them. I am planning a few different projects like comparing the property owners today. It’s always interesting to find the centennial farms and those who families who have have lived on the same land for 150 years. There is a lot of Schufelt’s in Berne going back to the era of the Civil War. ๐ŸฆŒ I bet they’ve harvested a lot of deer over the years.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 50. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 50. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

I am thinking about heading to the Adirondacks โ›ฐ on Friday for the long weekend. Spend a few nights in the wilderness, maybe have a fire, etc. Didn’t get my hunting or trapping license ๐Ÿ”ซ this year but honestly I think the woods is too crowded. โ›บ Meat ๐Ÿฅฉ in Styrofoam containers is a lot more easier and it’s fun to watch ’em burn. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As previously noted, next Monday is Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1933.

November 20, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ. HASH TAG waste your money on stupid plastic stuff. ๐Ÿ’ธโ†”๏ธ๐Ÿ—‘ Clouds with some clearing and 44 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒฅ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 30. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 1 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Going one of the most pleasant Fridays in recent weeks. โ›… Lots of sun and mild. It’s good, the past few days have been cool and I’ve had the heat on, especially working from home. But today it will be off and maybe crack open a window or two for fresh air.

Took the first shower ๐Ÿšฟ since Sunday. Working from home I don’t find the need to bathe ๐Ÿ›€๐Ÿป nearly as regularly as I’m not getting dirty and nobody cares if you are unshaved or smelly when you are social distancing. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป Plus it saves a lot of wash ๐Ÿ‘š and water ๐Ÿ’ฆ to wear the same clothes for multiple days.

A few rain drops ๐Ÿ’ง as I go for my morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป But it’s reasonably warm to be walking for late November in a t-shirt ๐Ÿ‘• with my vest over it. The air has a slight tang of barnyard and manure on it ๐Ÿฎ, but it’s November in Upstate NY. The sun โ˜€ certainly feels nice but at 10 or 15 degrees from the horizon it can only put out so much warmth.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 55 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 29th. South wind 9 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 1991. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 1961.โ„

I have a virtual meeting this afternoon ๐Ÿ“น which I’ll probably just walk down to the library or town park to do. I also want to download some of that MIT Election Lab data so I can play โ–ถ with that during down time this weekend. ๐Ÿ“š I also should look at getting some books out of the library to read in the evening and maybe work on some electronics projects now that the long winter is upon us. Nothing like breathing in some fumes from lead solder in one’s bedroom. ๐Ÿ”ฌ Says the boy ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿป whose burned his share of plastics over the years. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 27.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:47 pm with the sun in the southwest (236ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 4:59 pm, which is 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (180ยฐ) at an altitude of 27ยฐ from the horizon, 240,016 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:35 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 54 seconds over today.

I am glad my state inspection ๐Ÿš˜ ๐Ÿ” is done and the new registration is on my truck. I always worry about it a lot, especially now that my tires are getting worn down. I drove only 6,700 miles since last year according to the odometer although that’s off by 13% due to the 35 inch tires. This year I didn’t go to Western NY or Pennsylvania and generally have been doing more social distancing so fewer trips to the store ๐Ÿฌ but more to the library for remote work. Plus with the solar panel and the two accessory batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ on my truck, I would generally set up camp and remain parked ๐Ÿ…ฟ for multiple days.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 18th. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming west after midnight. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1879.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 49 degrees at 12pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 14th. Northwest wind 6 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. 0.8 inches of snow fell back in 1937.โ„

Cool but hopefully sunny and warm enough for a pleasant walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ. Those blue birds were pretty that I saw there the other week. I am not expecting a ton of sun but I like the exercise. You never know what wildlife you will see while up there. ๐Ÿฆ‰

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain after 1pm. โ˜” Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. โ˜๏ธ Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees.

I’ll probably go out to the folks house on Sunday. ๐Ÿฒ No big plans for Sunday, it might play with some of that Election Geodata I found on the MIT Election Lab ๐Ÿ”ฌ that I found the other night. Working from home ๐Ÿก means less commuting time and sometimes downtime at work and no library to walk to weeknights or the weekend so I’ll have to figure new ways to keep busy during the long winter nights.

As previously noted, next Friday is Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:55 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies, rain showers and temperatures between 57 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1896.

I am hoping next weekend to get up to the Adirondacks โ›ฐ โ„ to do some hot tenting โ›บ and hiking during the three day weekend. That said, not sure about the long range forecast. Might be kind of rainy. I’ll have to drive back Sunday as I don’t want to drive back in the dark from the Adirondacks. Some years the snow and ice hold off until January and I can do trips until the end of the year. Based on the amount of junk mail โœ‰ I got yesterday, the mailman is rooting for me to go it next weekend – certainly will have plenty of paper to start fires with. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Best way to Recycle

The best way to recycleis not to !!  โ™ป

Old Unopened Beer Car

Recycling is a politically correct way of separating out garbage, putting it in a separate bin in hopes that the waste material will be sold as scrap and pulverized or melted down into another low-value commodity. It sounds great, but it still reflects a lot of waste and under-utilized materials much of which quickly will end up in a landfill.

The best way to recycle is not to. That doesn’t mean that if you shouldn’t separate out your bottles and cans, but you should generally avoid purchasing things that have to be thrown away. It’s better to save and invest your money, look for sustainable assets that last a long time.

When I own my own land, I want to own maybe not a tiny home but certainly a small cabin with only the most minimal of furnishings and appliances. I want things that are simple, unlikely to break quickly and last a long time. Kind of how I live currently in my small apartment – with as little things as possible. But maybe even simpler – with fewer appliances, water and propane I’ve hauled in, electricity I’ve generated on site.

My goal would be to make one trip or less to the transfer station — and most of my waste being scrap metal or other recyclable commodities like aluminum cans, tin cans and glass. Maybe occasionally, I might have a junk appliance or a tire or something else that I need to toss, but by buying less they’re would be even less then that.

I would save paper products like junk mail and cardboard boxes for animal bedding and fire starting in the woodstove or campfire pit. Food waste would be saved for compost or feeding to the chickens and pigs. Aluminum and tin cans crushed for recycling. Plastic wrappers, milk bottles, netwrap and miscellaneous trash would be tossed in feed bags — and be burned in a hot fire – not a smoldering burn barrel.

That way, virtually no trash would end up in the landfill, both saving the environment and landfill space. If I can reuse something, the better. Plastic bottles make good feed scoops, paper for bedding, so forth. Buying in bulk means less packaging, and less waste. Urban recycling might be good for cities, but ultimately the most important thing is to minimize waste that has to be disposed via recycling or elsewise.

November 7, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 52 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 43 degrees.

Walked down to Stoney Pond but there is enough clouds โ˜๏ธ that the Syracuse light pollution makes the stars โœจ much more difficult than previous nights. Came back to camp and sat by the fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ for a while. Definitely some nice scenery hiking along the Canastota-Cazenovia Trail and poking around Fenner. The wind farm and all the various livestock farms up that way are quite interesting to see. ๐Ÿฎ It’s amazing what people can make from the earth ๐ŸŒŽ tillage and grass. ๐Ÿšœ God bless the grass.

Joe Biden is the president elect and I listened to his speech ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป. Honestly with socially distant drive in rally due to COVID-19 it sounded like it was held at the median of the Belt Parkway. ๐Ÿš˜ I get it but it’s weird to hear car horns at a political speech. I voted for Jo Jergenson but I think Biden will be a much better president than Trump. Biden has so much more experience, he listens to experts, and he’s a calming influence during the pandemic. ๐Ÿ‘พBut even if I felt differently, I don’t have much say in the presidency beyond a bubble I marked on the voting Scantron machine. ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ I don’t do many political rally anymore – protests are fun but I’m not interested in defending any particular cause. ๐Ÿคœ

Maybe Trump to a certain extent was a good thing. ๐Ÿคฌ He tore down the old rules about obscenity, brought down the presidency in some ways to the people by replacing the class and decorum of the office with that of a cheap suit worn by Billy Fuscillo. ๐Ÿ•ด๏ธ He made politicians a lot more free on their social media and many ways elevated politics over bureaucary and decorum which had gotten awful stuffy ๐Ÿง for the modern era. I think it’s fine for the world to know the president poops ๐Ÿ’ฉ and tweets from his gold plated toilet ๐Ÿšฝ. His three justices he appointed in the Supreme Court will provide an effective check on the new administration. โš– No one party should be too powerful. ๐Ÿ›ข That farm I passed with the very well used and blacked with melted plastic all over them burn barrels had a big ol Trump flag out front. But as a farmer I’m sure he’s done more than most to conserve our earth ๐ŸŒŽ and probably doesn’t send much trash to the landfill. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 27th. Southwest wind around 6 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1971.

I don’t know it feels colder than that already, โ„ but truth be told it was so warm and sunny today that everything seems a lot colder then it is. But sitting the next to the campfire ๐Ÿ”ฅwith my vest and cowboy hat ๐Ÿค  it’s quite warm. I realize that there is so much I can’t change about the world today but I can continue to enjoy my own life free and work to save for a better tomorrow. ๐Ÿ’ต The politicians are going to do what they do but I can’t turn off the radio ๐Ÿ“ป and avoid the social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I don’t think I’ll ever own of those colored televisions ๐Ÿ“บ,

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 54% illuminated. The moon will rise at 10:33 pm. The Beaver ๐Ÿป Moon is on Monday, November 23. The darkest hour is at 11:47 pm, followed by dawn at 6:16 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:46 am in the east-southeast (112ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 9 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:27 am with sun in the east-southeast (119ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 59 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 2pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. Maximum dew point of 46 at 5pm. Light west wind. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1975. 1.7 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

Tomorrow I have to take down camp โ›บ, officially by eleven o’clock when my three night tenancy expires. I will miss the wild Hill and Hollow country of Madison County ๐Ÿฎ but it’s not going away any time soon. I mean this was the exact same campsite I was at a decade ago. But with the mild weather โ˜€ I haven’t been able to enjoy the solitude that was the case a decade ago – people are enjoying the nice weather. Can’t blame them. Me too!

Central NY ๐Ÿ—ฝ is different than the Adirondacks or the Green Mountains but I like the agricultural landscape for a change. ๐Ÿฎ There are a lot of neat trails and scenic vistas out along this way. I honestly haven’t spent a lot of time out in Cazenovia area in years and the Trailway is quite nice. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป That said, Chittenango Falls was way too crowded but particularly the high country part of the Trailway was super quiet. ๐Ÿคซ I just wish more people would wear masks on the trail ๐Ÿ˜ท. Apparently social distancing isn’t as popular here. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Iysa beautiful landscape out here, and some day I want to live back out in the country ๐Ÿก๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿท but not one of those big fancy houses. More ramshackle like those often rundown farms I pass on by. There is something so beautiful about how nature grows back and works to take over everything – the abandoned homes and equipment, and just the mud and muck that can be found on every farm.

In four weeks on December 5 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) at 4:28 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 18 minutes and 45 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 28 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 40 and 25 degrees. The record high of 65 degrees was set back in 2001.

I may do a December trip โ›บ but I don’t really know, as I expect soon for remote work ๐Ÿ’ป to be ending and I don’t have a lot of vacation time left at this point before the end of the year. I feel like the abnormally warm weather is soon to switch to be cold โ„ and snow ๐ŸŒจ. And once the roads are icy and snow covered, camping season is likely done for me unless I hot tent ๐ŸŽช locally as I’ve done some years during the holidays.

Looking ahead, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 2 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 3 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 4 weeks, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 7 weeks, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 9 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 11 weeks, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 13 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 15 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 16 weeks.
