Good morning! Cloudy and 36 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. 🌥 There is a south-southwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. ☃️

The past few days I’ve decided to take a break from social media and the blog 📜 so I can spend more time in the woods hiking and thinking, 👂 listening to podcasts and drinking 🍻 beer and being away from it all. Two nights is never enough, especially since I got used to remote work from camp. I could have taken tomorrow off but rain is coming.

I was on the fence about where to this long weekend ⛺ but settled on Brookfield as there was more trails I wanted to explore and the forecast while cloudy for Sunday and today looked less wet. I had been at Rennselearville State Forest three weekends ago and wanted to mix things up especially so I didn’t burn up too much firewood. Plus I like the rural landscape 🚜 heading out to Brookfield. Longer drive though but a pleasant one.

Saturday I walked around Glimmerglass State Park 🏞 and it was cold by the lake but in the woods with the wind 🍃 blocked by the mountains it wasn’t so bad. I didn’t stick around very long as such. Deep blue skies and a pretty sunset 🌇. Got to Moscow Hill Horse Camp 🐴 and set up camp then hiked over to Elmer’s Place and then bushwhacked over Grassy Hill trying to find a good view which didn’t exist but I did flush out a ton of grouse. 🕊

By the time I got back to camp it was 6:10 and nearly pitch black but I had previously gathered firewood, set up the lights and propane, 🏮 had everything ready to go so it was a pleasant night. Had a big fire 🔥 though it was smokey at times due to all the wet wood, wet stuff in the burnables as I’ve been eating healthier. Heard a local fire station whistle go of 🚒🧑‍🚒 and thought I might have some unplanned visitors but no it was some other call. This place isn’t as remote as some places I camp. ⛺ Forgot to buy lighter fluid but once I got the somewhat damp and frozen wood going it burned well but was sparky until the wind died out. Saturday was a star filled night ✨ and very mild which was nice.

Sunday was cloudy and breezy at times 🌬️ especially up on the hills. I hiked the bulk of the day, visiting most of the outer truck trails at Charles Baker State Forest 🌲🌳🌲 as I didn’t want to hike muddy horse trails. Checked out the Elmer Spring Campsite which is remote but accessible by vehicle and is really nice and private. ⛺ Hiked the Ledges Trail which was kind of interesting as was Truck Trail 7 which is cut into a ledge on the side of the mountain ⛰️. Icy in spots especially on the road but cold enough even the horse 🐴 trails weren’t too icy.

For today, Washington’s Birthday will have showers likely, mainly before 11am. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Not bad for the high country in in. Just wearing the vest. Southwest wind 9 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.❄

While it hasn’t been sunny ☁️ the mid weather has been nice. Not having to deal with frozen water 💦, frozen food like milk 🥛 or eggs 🥚 is good for a change. The batteries are healthy and happy 😊 in my truck 🔋, I haven’t had to start the truck all weekend long. Used the propane heater ♨ a lot less than I have in recent trips, no icy propane lines to deal with. But it’s been cold enough that things have remained generally frozen in the ground, keeping the trails from being too muddy.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:16 pm with sun having an altitude of 36.2° from the due south horizon (-34.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:01 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (249°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (256°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:40 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 6:07 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-southwest (253°) at an altitude of 2° from the horizon, 228,419 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:41 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Today I decided to hike back and explore a few more ponds 🐸 in the northern part of the state forest. Then midday head back home. I figure enjoy and explore as much of the land while I’m here. Then I’ll have to head home. I thought about taking Tuesday off but it looks like rain ☔ and maybe snow here.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers after 4am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 23 degrees at 2am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 5th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 4am; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015.

Planning to go out and see the folks 👪 when I get home, that is after showering 🚿 and unpacking. Then I want to run to the car wash 🚙 and then Walmart for fruit and vegetables for the upcoming week. 🍏

Brookfield looks cold and snowy for next weekend. 🌨 But I got my fun in. Saturday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.

I don’t necessarily plan on being back to Brookfield anytime soon though I might do my April trip to Cazenovia rather than the Adirondacks East Branch Sacandaga River for a change. 🗻 Easter is late this year and depending on how mild the spring is things could be greening up by then. Probably few black flies up north 🐜 but I’ve been itching to do the Gorge Rail Trail is Cazenovia – Canestota for some time again. March maybe a camping trip ⛺ to Rennselearville State Forest again or Burnt Rossman. Depends on how much snow. It will be after the time change at this point.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until 8 PM Dusk 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 7:39 pm with dusk at 8:06 pm (Daylight Savings Time) in Brookfield. Earlier back in Albany. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, warm and temperatures between 74 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. Thinking spring thoughts 💭 on this cloudy but mild morning. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

Good morning! Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! 👑 I think his birthday 🎂 was yesterday, so a happy belated birthday to him. Now when do we get a holiday to celebrate the life of Fred Hampton?

Mostly sunny and 15 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. ☀ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Cold start to the morning but it’s warming up fast especially as the sun gets above the hills and into the holler. 🌡️

Cold enough this morning I started Big Red 🛻 for a while to be safe and ensure the battery 🔋 would be good by the time to leave. I don’t like idling my truck too much while camping due to oil consumption from idling and the famous 5.3 lifter tick but I didn’t want a dead starting battery either in the cold. She started right up though. It was in the single digits last night. I was a bit concerned as it appeared some voltage was bleeding through the relay last night to the accessory battery from the staring battery when I was idling the truck, not sure what that was about, but it didn’t cause any issues. 🤷‍♂️

M. L. King Day will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 32 degrees at 2pm. Typical for M.L.King Day. It’s the coldest week of winter on average though not this year. LA Nina and global warming from rednecks like me who drive big jacked up trucks and burn too much plastic. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light freezing rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.❄

Today I’m going to take down camp and maybe hike back to Tassell Hill from Chittenden Pond. ⛰ It’s the highest point in Oneida County and I’ve never been there before. Might also hike around Brookfield Creek loop and or Glimmerglass though I’ve done the later a few times. Then I want to head home relatively early and take a shower 🚿 and wash the salt and sand off Big Red 🛻 and get ready for a regular session work day on Tuesday.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:12 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2° from the due south horizon (-44.4° vs. 6/21). Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 19 degrees at 12am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 5am; Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Yesterday I hiked about 12 miles around Charles Baker State Forest 🌲🌳 checking out some of the more remote campsites, deep back country horse 🐴 trails, Lost Pond, Evergreen Pond Lean To, Quaker Cemetery 🪦 and the Old Little Red School 🏫 House, a one room school house that’s now somebody’s residence. I was surprised 🤨 I ran into more people than I expected in the woods.

While not currently a state holiday, next Monday is National Cheese Lovers Day 🧀 when the sun will be setting at 5:04 pm with dusk at 5:33 pm. Nobody can be opposed to that. Plus soon I won’t be walking home from work in the dark. 🔦 On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny skies, a few snow showers and temperatures between 24 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.

Good evening! Partly clear and 29 degrees in Delmar. 🌃 There is a southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am.

Out for the evening walk 🚶 after going to the laundromat. 👚 It took a lot longer than I thought, I almost feel like I put in two much soap. I brought my laptop 💻 but I was too fried after the day at work to do anything but scroll 📜 through the YouTube and social media. And then I posted my thoughts about the gas stove ban silliness. But now is the time to take action climate change or it’s never going to happen. 🌎

It’s just been really busy at work lately. 💼 Just a ton of rush projects and maybe I’ve been super aggressive at grabbing whatever is at the top of the que and making sure work gets done and done well. I thought December was busy but this month has proven even busier.

Tonight will be cloudy ☁, with a low of 28 degrees at 8pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 21st. Tonight will have 14 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of snow before 11am, then a chance of rain and sleet between 11am and noon, then rain likely after noon. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 12.8 inches of snow fell back in 2011.❄

Sounds like an awesome day tomorrow. As long as I get my steps 👣 in what do I care I live in the city. It rains and snows and is generally sloppy in the city these days.🌨️ Winter isn’t what it once was.

That said I’m excited about getting out of town this weekend. 🌲Going to be cold but good weather Saturday for getting out of town. Need to check the oil on the truck but other than that it seems like it will be a good weekend.

In four weeks on February 8 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (250°) at 5:19 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. I am digging the thought of summer in 23 weeks and the Potholers once again. ⛺ Or maybe just a weekend at the House Pond Campsite. Though I kind of wish for something new for a change but what it will be that I do not know. I’m just so tired of the ordinary.

Darkening Skies Thru the Woods

33 Nights I Camped in 2022

This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.

Ultimately I camped 33 nights, which is about normal for me, though the trips were longer and closer to home.

My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.

Campsite 2

Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.

East Branch Sacandaga River

Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.

Swimming Hole Off Old Edick Road

Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.

Powley Campsite 10

The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.

Campfire

Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.

Finger Lakes Sunset

Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.

Morning view

Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.

Catskill Mountains

My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.

Cheese Hill Road

My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.

Taconics

The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.

Back camping at the same site tonight

The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.

Winter camping ?

Conclusions

I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

July 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. 🐪 Or maybe not because it’s the dog 🐶 days of summer and Monday was a holiday and I’m off Friday. Next Wednesday is National Nude Day 👱. Summer after all is a much better time for skinny dipping than winter. Partly sunny and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 65 degrees. The muggy weather ends Sunday around noontime. 😓

Today is going to be another hot ol summer day, 🏖 although the thunderstorms ⛈ should provide some relief later. I didn’t think it was that warm out so far but I can find the warmth walking in the sun ☀. I didn’t do my evening or for that matter morning walk 🚶🏻 yesterday, mainly because it was hot. Actually I didn’t do the morning walk yesterday because I stayed over at my parents house 🏡 and had breakfast there before work.

I didn’t catch the earlier bus 🚍 in but that’s fine, as I am not expecting a busy morning and usually I stay a bit late in the office 🏢 as the evening bus without the express or rush hour service. I just dropped something in the kitchen and I had to clean it up. Also I’m having occasional issues with the toilet 🚽 always flushing perfectly. It’s always one issue or another with my apartment. It’s inexpensive, under 10% of my pre-tax income so I can’t complain much. Going to be another hot ol summer day but the air conditioning is nice.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 87 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 4pm. Light and variable wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.9° from the due south horizon (-0.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 79 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 61 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 2nd. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1969.

On this day in 1981, U.S. President Ronald Reagan appoints Sandra Day O’Connor to become the first female member of the Supreme Court of the United States. 🥪 That’s almost as cool as sliced bread, which is sold for the first time by the Chillico the Baking Company in 1921. As long as it’s not all moldy like that sandwich I bit into yesterday.

Looks like a great weekend up north. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

Maybe some thunderstorms ⛈ on Friday, but after my eye appointment is done 👀 I’m heading to Piseco-Powley Road. 🏊🏻‍♂️ I have the day off.. Probably spend much of the weekend at the Potholers. Monday and Tuesday probably work from Spectulator and Lake Pleasant. Got to take advantage of remote work 💻 as it’s quickly winding down.

After this weekend there is one more weekend before summer vacation. 🏖 I might go to Schoharie Valley for a long weekend if it’s nice and the Mine Kill Pool is open. I have quite a bit of time to use, although I will need a week for my summer vacation and then a week for an autumn trip to West Virginia or maybe somewhere else.

I also need to decide if I need work on my truck before vacation. 👨‍🔧 As the tires wear down, they are getting progressively louder. I still think I need new struts and tires on the truck, but I’m putting that off until the fall. I guess for now I could rotate the tires, but I’m a bit hesitant when I’m planning to replace them come the fall. I do need to decide if It’s time for an oil change, as I don’t think the shop used synthetic last time, although I haven’t gone that many miles since the last change. But it would be kind of nice get both the tires rotated and oil changed before vacation to be safe. I’ll have to think about it more, as neither is essential but might be good. The tires are annoying, but I want to wear them down more before replacing this autumn. Also want to sand down the rust and slap on a coating of rust-resistance paint at some point.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is National Nude Day 👱 when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny with a thunderstorm and temperatures between 84 and 67 degrees. Good day for skinny dipping maybe in the House Pond Campsite swimming hole. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.

Across Powley Place

July 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. 🏢 Back to work after the long weekend although I’m taking off Friday for an extra short week. Two weeks to Ugly Truck Day 🚚. Cloudy and 69 degrees in Dormansville, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 7 pm. Going to be another real hot and humid day, although I think the clouds and thunderstorms should help break the heat.

Last night I stayed over at my parents house in the truck camper ⛺ and they made breakfast which pretty good. Drove home, had to slam on the brakes twice 🦌 as there was a lot of deer on the road. I fished at Lawson Lake 🎣 with my feet off the dock until I big snapper swam by. 🐢 I’m a scardy cat, what’s the worse thing a big snapper can do? They don’t bite unless you attack them or really scare them and they prefer to flee, especially in water where they tend to be quite fast. 💦 I also went hiking and bird watching – bunch of Ruffled Grouse on Sickle Hill Road along with song sparrows, Gold Finch, red wing blackbirds along the way. I did a little fishing 🎣 at White Birch Pond but the bugs were bad! 🐜

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 10am. Some storms could be severe, with heavy rain. Partly sunny and hot 🌩, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 9am. Heat index values as high as 95. South wind 8 to 16 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1886.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.2° from the due south horizon (-0.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 19 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 83 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 58 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of thunderstorms, mainly before 7pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy 🌩, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. Southwest wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1979.

On this day in 1947, The AK-47 goes into production in the Soviet Union. 🔫 Even after almost seven decades, the model and its variants remain the most popular and widely used assault rifles in the world because of their substantial reliability under harsh conditions, low production costs compared to contemporary Western weapons, availability in virtually every geographic region and ease of use.

Weekend forecast is definitely looking up. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I got to take off Friday for my eye doctor appointment 👀 and then head up to the Adirondacks. I think I can leave directly from the eye doctor to the Adirondacks. I’m sure they’ll want to dilate my pupils but too bad as I want to get up to camp ⛺ so I can spend the balance of the day in the Adirondacks. Only two weekends until summer vacation, it’s coming quickly.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Ugly Truck Day 🚚 when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 87 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1991.

🔥🌲 Off-Grid Living 🏠🤠

I am seriously thinking about building an off-grid house. I have a first draft. I need to learn CAD! I have a road map towards buying land and building. I concede might have to live with long commute and give up traveling and camping. I need to be strong.

Why off grid? Well, I’m not into contemporary society. I want to own land, but not be called a landowner, and a cabin, not hooked to electrical grid, farm, raise pigs for food and burn my own trash. I’m saving for a better tomorrow, hoping to make the leap to another freer state. Having acreage is important. Cornfields aren’t bad neighbors. Maybe though my vision has grown smaller and more local. More on off-grid living.

I am 16 years into my career and have made some significant progress in my life. I love my job. But I do wonder on all the things I’m missing out but saving sure makes me high. Maybe it will be different when I own my own land — the end of goal of all this saving.

2020 into 2021 during the pandemic was a year of remote work. It was a struggle not having internet at home, worked a lot out of my truck. But I worked remotely from Horseshoe Lake which was super cool.

Generally I like the idea of owning land in a red state, particularly Idaho, Iowa, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Wisconsin — and Midwest more generally. But I may settle for New York – it’s all about the f-ing money!

💻👨‍💻 Open Source 🗺️📍

I use open source software and public sources of data for the blog. Quantum GIS (QGIS), GDAL/ogr2ogr, PyQGIS, GeoPANDAS, R Studio and Leaflet for map making, Arduino and ESP32 microprocessors, Ubuntu Linux and XFCE Window Manager. I’ve recently gotten interested in machine learning.

I avoid using commercial software like Microsoft Windows and do not have home internet or television. If you don’t use commercial software and use your brain, fears of computer viruses are overblown. I deleted most of my social media accounts.

📊🗺 R Statistical Programming 📜👨‍🏫

The R programming language and RStudio are powerful tools for statistical analysis, making maps and charts. Many of the blog posts and analysis I do are in R, ggplot not only makes great charts but also maps using tidycensus. Generally, R is better then Python for geospatial work.

I often think politics is for losers. I’m into the politics of statistical analysis and reading history books.

I believe strongly in the first amendment, second amendment, oppose gun restrictions and I support de-funding the police in favor of lower-cost technology and civilian employees. Maybe use red flag laws for voting to stop dangerous voters? And the media should stop promoting mass-shootings, even if it’s super profitable for all involved. They should tax the media when it promotes violence. I think some people are much too paranoid in politics. How elections are rigged under law to benefit incumbents. But vote, it’s the best option and inexpensive.

Yeah for the third parties! I voted for Larry Sharpe for Governor and Jo Jergenson for President but my views are complicated and often vote for Democrats, after voting Jill Stein Green Party in 2016.

Some thoughts on Joe Biden not seeking re-election. Times change, but Biden was been a good change over DJT and glad the Trump era is over and are glad prosecutors and grand jurors are holding him responsible by indicting him for many serious felonies. I don’t think Trump can win in 2024, as nothing has changed politically from 2020.

I think rural people should be left alone and not worship government workers or have parades for them. I am no fan of Donald Trump, his speeches are bad, I don’t like Trump’s embrace of radical environmentalists, but do admire the homemade roadside monuments to DJT.

I don’t toke. But whatever. There are too many transit authorities.

🌲🌳The Earth 🌎 🐸

Why I oppose wilderness areas and parks. It’s trendy to be green these days, but is eco-marketing good for the planet? I visited the Mount Storm Coal Plant and Corridor H.

I worry about a lot about overly-aggressive Climate Change Action, and Undermining Environment Laws for Climate Action. I think we should all admit we are Addicted to Fossil Fuels. These days, urban recycling has become a joke, when it’s still an option at all. It’s better to just buy less shit and avoid the alure of Costcos. I really don’t like how aging radicals have become industrial solar salespeople.

I’m a big of farmers who are essentially Living Off the Earth and think Rednecks are Noble Savages. Dairy Farming are key to our rural landscape. I’d trust a farmer or a hunter in a pile of guts he’s butchered over any ivory-tower scientist.

💳 💸Saving Money 💰 💷

I am not a fan of ESG Investing as it’s not well diversified. I prefer index-funds and other tax-advantaged ways of saving. Why I am concerned about saving enough for retirement, even though I’m in my late 30s. We as a nation should save more, consume less. I like the idea of carbon tax to replace capital gains taxes to discourage consumption.

🥦 🍎Mission Fifty, Smoking Grass & Being Healthier 🏠🧠

I am now officially in my 40s! I am building to a better life in my 50s, which means getting up early, walking a lot, saying no to cake and yes to more fruit. In many ways, the forties are an awesome time to be alive.

And eating healthy for less without losing sleep over arsenic. And I don’t think we should subsidize unhealthy habits. How I got started in eating healther. Meals are too focused on meat and carbs due to how we describe them, maybe I eat too many bananas in the office, what to eat while camping, worry more about salt then GMOs, eat more beans. Do spend extra for farmers market peaches, especially doughnut peaches and plums. Consider ethnic supermarkets. Thinking about how to make a healthier macaroni and cheese, spinach-mackeral-pasta salad, quick-cook biscuits and whole-wheat bread. That said, too many recipes are junk food crap. Okay in moderation is not okay. The fact that I’m thinner is not a sign I’m dying.

A few years back I decided to explore my mental illness with therapy, thinking about why I have so much anxiety and how many of my values are rational or just thinking too much rednecks’ burn barrels and how much of a throwaway society we live in. Do I want to change?

I’ve learned to care less about the world, and focus more on myself. Maybe I am happier as I am now, saving and investing a lot towards owning my own land, where I don’t have to deal with all the bullshit of modern life.

And smoke more grass, now that’s legal. Smoking pot is fascinating. Enjoying the rich colors. A map of licensed pot retailers in NYS. Yes, that stuff we used to think of as the smell of crime. Thoughts on Stoner Culture. Not that the blog advertisers like it.
