February 20, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Three weeks to 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ†. Mostly cloudy and 15 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 4.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 6 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

This morning when I walked down to Stewart’s to buy milk, โ˜•the air had a tinge of manure ๐Ÿฎ and wood smoke on it,๐Ÿ”ฅduring this most cloudy of mornings prior to the snow and ice coming down later. โ˜ I don’t really live in the country any more but on the outskirts of the suburbs as they start to peter out to the countryside.

After getting milk and having a breakfast of frozen fruit๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ’๐ŸŒ and cereal I walked down to the express bus. ๐ŸšŒย I actually didn’t end up needing the milk today, but maybe tomorrow. Bus was running a little late, which was fine, it showed up but then we hit more traffic heading into the plaza. I don’t care that much about it, I’m not driving.

Today will have a chance of snow, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a high of 28 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

I’ll take 63 degrees for sure any day now. We are due for a spring thaw anytime๐ŸŒฑ now, maybe a bit later this week although I doubt we will see the sixties anytime soon. But one can hope and maybe God will listen. Trump doesn’t believe in global warming after all.ย But winters aren’t nearly as cold as once where.

Looking forward to the Pine Bush dinner tonight,๐Ÿ it should be really good with the lasagna and Ward Stone speaking. ๐ŸŽค He’s getting up there in the years, so who knows how many opportunities there will be able to hear him in the coming years. He’s an authority on many things, especially things that the state government finds particularly unpleasant like the Coeymans Blue Circle Plant, that was poisoning everything nearby with mercury, at least until they “fixed” the plant with a big upgrade.๐Ÿญ Blue Circle Cement, later known as LaFarge, was built because Governor Thomas Dewey gave them a big tax break to build the non-union plant, to break the cement strike in New York. But we don’t talk about the history anymore.

But actually, Ward Stone is coming to talk about another state proposal, re-powering the old ANSWERS incinerator to work as a micro-grid power plant,ย that will burn natural gas for generations to come, as the climate warms,ย ย ๐ŸŒย to heat and cool the Empire Plaza and other state office buildings, and also generate electricity for the buildings, as an alternative to grid power — and act as a “jump start pack” for the electric grid, which may become more unstableย ๐Ÿ”Œย both when the climate becomes more unstable and more renewables are put on it.

Times change, and sometimes opportunities that once existed suddenly. So definitely come to the Pine Bush dinner, before it’s late.ย ๐Ÿฝ ย 6 PM tonight is the dinner, 7 PM is the free lecture. I think the dinner costs like $12 but I usually end up throwing in $15 or $20 for it.ย  Should be a great evening.

The sun will set at 5:34 pm with dusk around 6:02 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for snow showers ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 27 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be periods of snow and sleet before 11pm, then periods of sleet between 11pm and midnight, then periods of freezing rain after midnight. ๐ŸŒง Low of 26 degrees at 6pm. Sounds like it could be pretty icy later. Well the bus will get me home from the Pine Bush dinner so I’m not that worried about it. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 16th. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 2015.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain and sleet before 7am, then a chance of rain between 7am and 10am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 22nd. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected. Not sure if tomorrow I’ll be walking down to the Park and Ride. A year ago, we had mostly sunny in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 73 was set in 2018. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1929.โ„

Last night’s commute wasn’t too bad.ย ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšƒ๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿš๐Ÿš’๐Ÿšš๐Ÿš›ย Traffic actually was pretty light due to the holiday weekend.ย I thought about cooking up some pasta for dinner, but decided on fish sticks and broccoli, as I wanted something different, as tonight is the Save the Pine Bush Dinner.ย ๐ŸŸย Laid back for a while, ate dinner, then hopped on the exercise bike.ย Really wasn’t that hungry,

Then I thought about going down to the library but decided that it would be a would be nice to go for a walk in the evening around 8 pm. ๐ŸšถIn the meantime I decided to ride the exercise bike for an hour while listening to Fresh Air podcast with Andrew McCabe formerly of the FBI and then a video about about Core Memory. ๐ŸŽงย I heard it first on the radio starting, but put on the podcast, so I could listen over my bluetooth headphones while on the bike. I’ll have to ask my neighbor if he can hear the rumble of the bike the next time I see him, but I try not to ride the bike much after 8:30 most nights.

Around 8:30 I went for my evening walk under the beautiful snow moon. ๐ŸŒ• No problem walking in the darkness, plenty of light and the sidewalks were free of ice and snow for the most part. Pretty night but fairly cold but at least the wind had died down. ๐Ÿƒย It was cold, but not that cold.ย That said, I’m certainly looking forward to nicer weather, sitting out back with a cold glass of orange juiceย ๐ŸŠ or maybe ice water with a drop of lemon juice in it.๐Ÿ‹

Came home and laid in bed watching a few YouTube videos๐ŸŽฅ I had previously downloaded, one about thermal storage of heat, ๐Ÿ”ฅย one about stocking rate of cattle on ranches, ๐Ÿฎand one about off grid living. Then I took my contacts out and retired for the night. ๐Ÿ‘I do like how the lights automatically remind me when it’s time for bed, automatically dimming at 10:10 pm๐Ÿ˜ด.ย It really helps when you get to bed at a proper hour for boosting your sleep.ย I always try to bed down by the time the lights start dimming at 10:10 pm. It really is a good reminder.

I am definitely looking forward to those longer nights in a month with dusk not being until after 7:30 pm๐Ÿ•— and hopefully for some warmer nights when I can sit out back, looking up at the stars. โœจย Usually I work on a blog post out back in the warmer weather, although now that I’ve built a system for downloading videos, I might actually watch one of the videos from the channels I’ve downloaded. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of staring at a screen, but I listen to them, and are learning a lot about many different topics, expanding my knowledge and hopefully my future.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Sunday, rain likely before 1pm, then showers likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

NOAA seems to think this weekend will be quite sunny, at least for the Save the Pine Bush hike.ย I am not sure I totally agree, but it will be mild for the ski trip. ๐ŸŽฟI know Sunday still looks to be quite wet, which looks like it will melt the snow, hopefully melting it away the rain and not turning to ice. I am a bit worried about ice again, so if your joining us, bring your microspikes. Skis might not work well.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012.

In four weeks on March 20 the sun will be setting at 7:07 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 49 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 37 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 weeks, May ๐Ÿ•Š is in 10 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 15 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 23 months.

Setting Sun

January 23, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€! I celebrated by putting some good munster cheese on my egg waffles this morning. Mostly cloudy and 21 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 10. There are 10 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm, with rain aggressively tackling the snow by the evening. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Hopefully you brought your umbrella, I know I did. โ˜”ย Might need to hold onto the umbrella top though with the wind, especially in the city later.ย ๐ŸŒช

This morning the bus was running relatively close to on time which was much better than the nine o’clock cluster duck when I was trying to get home last night. ๐ŸšŒAt this point a decade plus in the making I should be prepared for late nights at work and pack a dinner but alas I’m uneducated and haven’t learned my lesson. I just wish that snow wouldn’t cause such a cluster duck in the city and they could have orderly snow removal like they have in the suburbs.ย ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš™๐Ÿš—๐Ÿš•๐ŸšŒ๐Ÿš™๐Ÿšš The sidewalks are almost bare in Delmar and the roads are free of obstruction from the snow banks, so the traffic problems aren’t in burbs. Just the city with the carsย abandoned mid street due to the snow banks. ๐Ÿ…ฟ

When I finally got home last night,ย I had a two beers which is unusual for me,ย ๐Ÿปย but I didn’t have any milk at homeย ๐Ÿฎย and I didn’t feel like going to the store at the late hour. I had a decent dinner, but I was bewildered about sitting in traffic delays on the bus that late at night. I got to bed relatively early, slept a good eight hours, and are back at work.ย ๐Ÿ˜ดย I got milk this morning at the store, made egg waffles with cheese, ironed my shirt,ย ๐Ÿ‘•ย and off I am back to work. I do feel like my cold has gotten worst again this morning, I probably should have skipped the beer in favor of getting the milk or drinking plain water, but that’s what I did.

Cloudy this morning then rain laterย ๐ŸŒง, reaching 36 degrees at 4pm and continuing to get warmer as the nights proceeds. Some freezing rain may mix in before it comes all rain for rush hour. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 19th. Kind of a January thaw with the rain really expected to hit the snow hard. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1906. 10.6 inches of snow fell back in 1963.โ„

The sun will set at 4:57 pm with dusk around 5:28 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. Temperature rising to around 44 by 5am. South wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. I turned my heat down to 52 degrees, I’ll probably cut it to 50 before bed to save energy of its going to be well above freezing. Saving energy is important especially of we are looking at a very cold February coming up. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2018, we had cloudy in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1948.

I have to stress,ย I am not anti-automobile but I do think they are so problematic in our cities,ย ๐Ÿš—ย especially when the block up all the streets during winter weather and snow removal, delaying other motorists and transit services at least until the snow banks can be cut back adequately. In the suburbs, at least people have large enough properties that they can park them off the street. Eventually when I own land, I probably will probably be dependent on motoring to a certain extent, but if I worked downtown, I would certainly park at the Park and Ride lot and take the bus downtown, to avoid congestion and all the problems that motoring comes in a city. That said, for cheaper land, and a less stressful life, I think I’d prefer to work in a town more like Wellsboro/Mansfield Penna in the Penna Wilds then a big city like Albany.๐Ÿ™ย I kind of like that country, but I don’t know what I would do for work in a place like that (and Penna is kind of expensive with he taxes). I think maybe eventually get out of the snow belt, as I hate dealing with slick roads, and the road salt everywhere on the roads. I’ve fascinated by Missouri or maybe Arkanas and the Ozarks but there are also many other states .

Depending on when I get out of work, and how I feel by afternoon,ย I am hoping to get out my soldering iron and get the LED lights in my bedroom working again with the replacement transistor,ย without the alligator clips. I don’t care if the software is totally done, but I want to have them come back on the morning automaticallyย ๐Ÿ’กย as it will make getting out of bed easier, although today for the first time I noticed dawn was early enough that it wasn’t pitch black when I first awoke. Once things are fully wired back up again, I’ll write the most simple part of the code, and work on porting over the rest of the code in the coming days. I think it’s going to be too wet to walk down to the library tonight or do my evening walk, but who knows, it’s going to be pretty mild.๐ŸŒง I do like my evening walk. I thought about going over to John Wolcott’s house again to help with his files, but he doesn’t want me to come over until I’m feeling totally good again.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† with dusk at 7:27 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 34 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2012. A mild spring would be nice, I wouldn’t mind a night or two of truck cap campingโ›บ in early March assuming I’m not attached to my desk at work that month month. Who knows how long the snow will last, a few warm days with rain could easily kill the snow in early March, as winters don’t last as long these days as they did in years past.

Snowmobile Trail

January 3, 2019 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear tomorrow around 4 am.

Another long day, busy but still its good to be back in the Albany area, able to take the bus home after a long day. 🚌 I can complain but I enjoy the routine and I think I do good work. Making a lot of progress on the report, I don’t plan to stay late tomorrow, which is Friday. I heard we should have some really nice weather come tomorrow than cooler for the weekend. But then again it’s January, and relatively speaking it’s been quite mild.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 27 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 19th. West wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. Should be a quite pleasant evening. In 2018, we had with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1904.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 3% illuminated. The moon will rise at 6:05 am. The New Moon will be tomorrow with mostly cloudy skies. The Wolf Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, January 20th. The sun will rise at 7:25 am with the first light at 6:53 am, which is earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 50 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 58 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 12th. South wind 5 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had . The high last year was 22 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1950. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 2003.โ„

Once I get home I’ll cook up some dinner then go for my evening walk. 🏃I successfully renewed my library books so I can finish them up without having to worry about getting them back. I could read for a while after I get back from my walk but I probably will just retire early to bed or maybe jot down my thoughts on a few things.

Mild but wet for the first half of the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of rain or freezing rain before 10am, then rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 39. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. I have a family event on Sunday to attend to, and I think I’ll enjoy Saturday at home working on some projects. The budget has gotten tight again for me so I need to continue to find ways to cut expenses and spend more time doing things closer to home. I’ll travel more come the spring time.

In four weeks on January 31 the sun will be setting at 5:08 pm,🌄 which is 33 minutes and 8 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 30 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 15 degrees. The record high of 58 degrees was set back in 1913.

Windham High Peak and Zoar Mountain

December 27, 2018 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar. โ›… There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 4 am. 🌡๏ธ

It wasn’t too bad for the evening walk but I suspect later in the night it could be icy. By the time I go to work tomorrow I don’t expect any problems though on the roads not that I plan to drive anywhere but will be taking the bus. Going to quite mild tomorrow. 🏃

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow before 2am, then sleet likely between 2am and 4am, then freezing rain likely after 4am. Cloudy 🌥, with a low of 27 degrees at 10pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 2nd. Southeast wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2017, we had partly clear skies. It got down to -5 degrees. It was cold the end of last December. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1951.

I ended up getting home, having dinner and listening to Marketplace then playing with my phone before going on the evening walk. I get tired of going down to the library all off the time and instead are trying to spend more evenings at home, going for my evening walk a bit tired. But I have to admit I wasted my time at home screwing around with Facebook and reading news articles on the internet, sharing random things of interest.

I really should have spent the time messing around with Bluetooth more so I can get the various things I’ve built in my bedroom talking to one another. I tried hooking something up on this Arduino Uno shield I had but I guess it’s only for soldering rather than a breadboard so I’m going to have to move everything over the next time I work on it. I have a dozen other boring projects like scrubbing and cleaning my tub which has gotten really dirty that should be done too. But I’ve been tired lately. 📻Waiting for Marketplace to come on at 6:30 pm is kind of silly because I subscribe to the podcast and honestly I don’t day trade, although I do like to expand my knowledge of the markets over the long term and what the real experts – not the flash in the pan commentators say about the economy and how I can eventually secure the good life for myself with land and an off grid cabin. 🏡 But I was so fried and that’s my excuse. 💤

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 63% illuminated. The moon will set at 11:44 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tomorrow with mostly cloudy skies. The Wolf Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, January 20th. The sun will rise at 7:24 am with the first light at 6:52 am, which is 16 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain. 🌧 High of 50 degrees at 6pm. 19 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around November 9th. That seems like an eternity ago at this point. But definitely sounds wet. Maximum dew point of 45 at 5pm. 🏖๏ธ South wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had sunny skies. The high last year was 8 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, scattered rain showers, possibly mixing with snow after 1pm, then gradually ending. Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 30. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

I’m still considering going up to the Adirondacks after the pine bush hike 🚶but I’m still a bit concerned about the forecast. I don’t want to camp through four days of clouds then rain on New Years Eve. 💦 That said not much ice is expected up north and the rain tomorrow will melt most of snow down to an icy glaze. I should be able to park near the road and camp not that far back although I doubt I’ll have cell service for the campsite I have in mind. โ›บ

I don’t know I’m somewhat inclined to stay home and save the money which is a bit tight after Christmas and work on some electronics projects and coding. And do a day trip to hike somewhere locally. The wind on Saturday sounds cold and the mercury will fall dramatically come Sunday.📉 I’m not sure although I’ll need to decide fairly early tomorrow so I can get propane topped off and food if I do decide to go up north. I wouldn’t mind getting away from it all for a few days, especially if I lack cell service as well close out 2018.📡 It would be fun to spend the last night of the year, waking to a new year in the tent, sleeping in the wilderness but not in the pouring rain. 🎇

In four weeks on January 24 the sun will be setting at 4:58 pm,🌄 which is 29 minutes and 52 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 41 and 18 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 14 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 1999.

Looking ahead, Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄๏ธ is in 1 week, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 7 weeks, Spring 🌷 is in 12 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 13 weeks, Average High is 60 🌼 is in 16 weeks (hello black flies), Arbor Day 🌳 is in 4 months, Average High is 70 🐮 is in 20 weeks, Memorial Day 🇺🇸 is in 5 months, Independence Day 🇺🇸 is in 27 weeks and August 🌻 is in 31 weeks.

Ginger Bread Cake

December 21, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ! Warm and rainy start to winter, similar to 2012. At least no road salt, although I’m not planning on driving anywhere today. Final Friday before Christmas. Next Friday is 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆. That’s a big improvement over the 4:22 sunset of the past few weeks.

This morning it’s raining out and 47 degrees in Delmar. โ˜” A bicyclist is riding his bike to work on the Normans Kill Bridge on a Delaware Avenue. That’s some dedication. There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ The road salt should reappear magically tonight.

Today will rain. The rain could be heavy at times. 🌧 High of 55 degrees at 12pm. 22 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around October 27th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 2pm. 🏖๏ธ Makes sense as it’s raining out although sometimes you can have a rain and not have 100% humidity in the air. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had . The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1957. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008.โ„

The sun will set at 4:25 pm with dusk around 4:57 pm, which is 30 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 55 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before 2am. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. 28 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around September 27th. That’s a pretty mild evening, must be close to a record warm for the low temperature. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2017, we had with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1955.

Definitely a cold and wet Friday but it’s remarkable to think the holiday weekend is just around the corner. 🎁 Before you know it, 2019 will be here. While I don’t know for sure I’m still thinking about the Adirondacks for the final weekend of 2018. Time goes by so quickly.

Last night with the rain I decided to stay home, doing some reading and working on some code. 📗I finally got the LOIN32 development boards but I did not do any soldering projects. Maybe tonight. I have a few projects that I want to work on including rebuilding the lighting controller I built last year with the LOLIN32 rather than the Arduino Uno it’s built around now. As the PWM works different on the different board and I’ll be using Bluetooth rather than IR remote, it’s going to require almost a complete rewrite of the code. But that’s fine as I’ve learned a lot of the year and can make the code much more efficient. โ™’

As previously noted, next Friday is 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 4:30 pm with dusk at 5:01 pm. On that day in 2017, we had sunny and temperatures between 8 and -5 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1982.

Abbie

December 20, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ. Tomorrow is the first day of winter. Mostly sunny and 33 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. Rather hazy though in the city. Fairly pleasant morning, but I’m more then a bit drowsy.๐Ÿ’ค

A nice morning but I had trouble getting going this morning, โ˜€ as I had too many cups of coffee at the Pine Bush dinner and that effected my sleep. โ˜•ย Not only did I drink coffee with dinner, I drank more when I started to choke on one of the cookies during the dinner. Kind of a busy day yesterday but after it all I did make it to the Pine Bush dinner. ๐ŸŒฒTaking the local to work. ๐ŸšŒ

The sun will set at 4:24 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph.

Today will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a high of 41 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 3rd. South wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.โ„

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 97% illuminated with the moon rising at 3:03 pm. The moon will set at 5:51 am. December’s Cold Moonย ๐ŸŒ• will be tomorrow. The sun will rise at 7:21 am with the first light at 6:49 am, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 seconds over last night.

Tonight will rain, mainly after 9pm. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง Low of 39 degrees at 6pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 18th. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. Going to be a wet and warm night into the day tomorrow. In 2017, we had light snow in the evening. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

I continue toย work on writing the codeย โŒจย for my niece’sย flashing star,ย ๐Ÿ’ซย right now I’ve come up with 16 different color patterns. It’s a little hard to think of additional ones, although I’m sure there is more ramps and flashing patterns I could come up with. I want to try put as much in as possible in the code, as it would make more interesting, but after a while coming up with new patterns is hard.

The Pine Bush dinner was interesting but I’m not sure if I agree with having speakers pushing commercial products that they’re making money off of. ๐Ÿ’ฐGeothermal is interesting and I guess there are many benefits to solar energy although I have my doubts about those large industrial solar facilities. I think there is a lot of questions that need to be asked about developing large tracks of farm land and forest,๐ŸŽ‹ covering them with panels made out of hazardous materials that will pose risks for generations to come especially if they aren’t properly hauled off to landfills at the end of their lives. โฌ›ย Cow manure rots, farm fields revert to the woods by themselves without government intervening. But I guess I’m a minority voice, to be grouped in with the fossil fuel proponents just for asking questions of the government bureaucrats.

I will probably go out hiking somewhere on Sunday, maybe not too far away,ย ๐Ÿšถย then out to the folks house for Christmas Eve. It looks like virtually all of the snow except for the highest locations of the Adirondacks will be gone after the heavy rains of Friday into Saturday.ย โ˜”ย With the rain on Saturday, I will finish up working on my various Christmas gifts that I’ve been working on building. I got a bunch of perf and strip board in the mail the other day, for building further products.๐Ÿ”ฌย Always a good thing on cold winter nights, except for the drafts blowing smoke from the flux burning off into my face.

For the New Years Eve long weekend,ย I am considering going camping up in the Adirondacks or maybe Brookfield.ย ๐Ÿ•ย With the snow gone all over locally, and only a little left in the Adirondacks, it might be nice to get away. I still have camp food stored away, the high calorie stuff I don’t like to eat at home and plenty of propane for at least a few nights camping, although if I do a full three nights, I might get the tank to be filled to be safe rather then sorry. A nice fire is always good, and if we have some sunny weather, some hunting and hiking would be a lot of fun. I kind of like Brookfield because those campsites you can drive up into, as if I go there, it will be in snow-free weather. Plus good cellphone reception which can make the long nights pass quicker.

As previously noted, there areย 2 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธย when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:06 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 22 and 7 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Rays Across the Reservoir

December 12, 2018 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Two weeks to Boxing Day 🥊. I’m all for Boxing Day if it’s a holiday you celebrate using fire and all the packaging Christmas gifts come in. Cloudy with a fresh inch or two of snow on the ground, 27 degrees in Hector. โ„ There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at Friday around 8 am. 🌡๏ธ About the ttim I start packing up up for home.

Today will be mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 29 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow and mist in the morning, which became light rain and mist by afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970.โ„

This morning when I awoke there was an inch or two of snow on the ground. โ„ Not a lot, I think most of it came down in the evening before I retired to the tent as I didn’t like all the wet globby snow coming down. Did my business, made coffee, started up the truck as the battery was a bit low. Then I ended up cooking up eggs and sausage for breakfast. The eggs being in the cooler didn’t freeze unlike nearly everything else. All the water I have is totally frozen, I’ve been melting snow on the stove to produce water for coffee, cooking and washing. That stove puts out a lot of heat so

The sun will set at 4:34 pm with dusk around 5:06 pm, which is 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 38 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of light snow, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy 🌨, with a low of 24 degrees at 8pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 9th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 7pm; South wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 16 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1988.

Yesterday I decided to stick around camp, going for what was originally going to be a short walk to sit back and study nature🐦 but became a longer seven mile walk via the Backbone, Ravine, Interlaken and Burnt Hill Trails.🌲 Some of the views from the pastures were fairly nice although the woods seemed unusually quiet maybe due to the clouds and somewhat unsettled conditions. I was hoping to see more wildlife but it was still a nice walk. I’ve never explored the trails much up here as they always seem so muddy in the summer.

Plow just came through but I still think I’ll take the less steep route off the mountain in case it’s slippery as it’s still snowing a bit. โ„ I’m chewing over Seneca Falls and Montezuma today versus Ithaca and Luicifer Falls in the winter. I know the gorge trails are closed but I believe the overlook is still open. Not a real sunny day but not much sun is predicted for the rest of the week. I want to get the propane tank topped off just because it’s getting a little light and I’d hate to run out in the cold weather. Maybe I’ll do Seneca Falls just because I hate driving in Ithaca so much. Probably leave before dark as I don’t want to drive back on those rural roads after dark.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Boxing Day 🥊 when the sun will be setting at 4:40 pm with dusk at 5:12 pm. On that day in 2017, we had snow, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 22 and 8 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.
