August 20, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ! I know, that’s a spider but emojis are limited. ๐Ÿ•ธ Three weeks to 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡. That said, sun still rises much earlier here than the Finger Lakes. Mostly sunny and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees.

Coffee โ˜• and pancakes for breakfast. ๐Ÿฅž A good breakfast and it’s a nice enough of a day I should be outside. It would be a nice morning to be eating outside. I think in a bit I’ll head out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Going to be a great day, not real humid but wait for the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1937.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-11.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:12 pm with the sun in the west (281ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 8:18 pm, which is one minute and 33 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (272ยฐ) at an altitude of 9ยฐ from the horizon, 227,751 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:57 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 53 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over today.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 56 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8pm. Light south wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1977.

In 2014, seventy-two people are killed in Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture by a series of landslides caused by a month’s worth of rain that fell in one day. ๐Ÿ’ฆ That sounds like it was a pretty wet day.

A hot and humid weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 85. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 66 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

I don’t think I would mind spending my weekend ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ at the Mine Kill Pool, getting in some swimming before it closes for the autumn. Definitely wear the banada mask ๐Ÿ˜ท on the bathroom ๐Ÿšฟ but it’s fine to take it off on the pool deck if I maintain social distancing. ๐Ÿ‚ Autumn is right around the corner and things will be closing up fast.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:13 pm with dusk at 7:42 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1931.

Water levels were fairly high on the Reservoir

August 19, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 52 degrees.

I finally broke down and got groceries this evening. ๐Ÿฅž๐Ÿ–๐ŸฅชI hadn’t bought anything since I got beer ๐Ÿป on vacation on Friday and I was even running low on the most basics at home. Also got toilet ๐Ÿšฝ paper, which is in stock easily now at much stores. I go through more toilet paper when I camp as the rolls tend to get damp, muddy or damaged and I think I often poop more at camp between the beer and the extra coffee I drink. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

I was going to shop when I was going to go over to John Wolcott’s house but that didn’t happen because I had this mailer ๐Ÿ“ I was looking at for work and I was puzzling on how to edit some of the language on it. I’ll work on it more in the morning.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 14th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10pm. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1998.

Tonight will have a New ๐ŸŒš Moon with 1% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:00 am, followed by dawn at 5:38 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:08 am in the east-northeast (72ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 2 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:46 am with sun in the east-northeast (78ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 17 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 37 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 8am. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1937.

I have been really bad about updating the blog lately ๐Ÿ’ป but life has been so busy and non stop ๐Ÿ—“๏ธever since vacation came to a close. Maybe I’m finding other things to occupy my time but I’ve sure been busy. Seems werid with the pandemic smoldering all around and things still closed but time flies by. When winter comes I’ll have more time I guess. I also have a lot of emails ๐Ÿ“ง and map requests I need to catch up on. Still thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about camping ๐Ÿ• this weekend and doing some swimming ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ if I can find time.

I am a little disappointed with the graniness of the camera ๐Ÿ“ธ I’m my new smartphone, that said it’s still impressive even if it’s not a fancy iPhone. Technology is getting much better these days. Still thinking about getting a clip on telephoto lens ๐Ÿ”ญ for my phone because it might be fun.

In four weeks on September 16 the sun will be setting in the west (274ยฐ) at 7:02 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 47 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 73 and 55 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 72 and 52 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1939.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 1 week, Corn Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 2 weeks, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 10 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 11 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 12 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 16 weeks, Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ is in 17 weeks, Festivus ๐Ÿ– is in 18 weeks, Bacon Day ๐Ÿฅ“ is in 19 weeks, Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก is in 21 weeks, Inauguration Day โœ… is in 22 weeks, Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is in 25 weeks and Presidents Day ๐Ÿ‘ด is in 26 weeks.

Along the Edge of Lake

August 19, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. ๐Ÿซ I guess I will have to watch more of Homesteady videos where they milk their camel. ๐Ÿฅ› Camel milk is good for children with allergies to dairy apparently. ๐ŸŒธ Next Wednesday is National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ. Partly cloudy and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. Almost an autumn like morning. I shouldn’t rush it in Trump’s America ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ .

It was nice to hike out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ last night but the sun sure sets early now that September is just around the corner. ๐ŸŒ‡ It’s always a big shock when you come back east and the sun sets so much earlier. It’s nice spending time out in the woods although I miss the wild country of the Finger Lakes.

Today will have isolated showers after 9am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 74 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Light northwest wind increasing to 8 to 13 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1899.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 60ยฐ from the due south horizon (-10.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). The sun isn’t nearly as high in the sky now that the first day of summer is in the distance. A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:14 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:52 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 8:20 pm, which is one minute and 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-northwest (285ยฐ) at an altitude of 3ยฐ from the horizon, 229,402 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:58 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 52 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 43 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 36 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 14th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6pm. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1998.

On this day in 1955, severe flooding across the northeastern portion of our country caused by Hurricane Diane claims 200 lives. ๐ŸŒ€ Mostly forgotten now, it devesated the Poconos of Pennsylvania, along with much of Connecticut and Massachusetts as rivers overflowed their banks and dams failed. The East Coast got hit by multiple hurricanes that year, the one on top of the other is what lead to a lot of the flooding. ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 87. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

I am not convinced that Sunday will be really good weather wise โ˜€ but I’m thinking about taking a weekend out to Schoharie County and going to the Mine Kill Pool. Probably drive out on Sunday as I have a pretty busy day scheduled for Friday with work and lots of video conferences and training that I’m putting on. Certainly will be hot and humid though for the weekend.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ when the sun will be setting at 7:39 pm with dusk at 8:08 pm. On that day in 2019, we had sunny and temperatures between 78 and 52 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1948.

Nice Bright Campfire

August 16, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees.

Made it back home ๐Ÿก by around 9:15. Not too bad time as I left Danby around 5:30 and took NY 23 across the state for a change. Not the fastest way back home but I get tired of driving the same route back from the Finger Lakes. It was all and all a good trip and I got a lot rammed into the week while at the same time picking less crowded places to explore. Plus I had to stop for gas, โ›ฝ a bite to eat ๐ŸŒญ and a bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ break. Hopefully I didn’t get Coronavirus from pissing at the Interstate 88 rest area bathroom. I washed my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป a second time good when I got home. ๐Ÿ‘พ

The Danby State Forest overlook was fine ๐Ÿ—ป but I really visited it during the wrong time of the day, the sun โ˜€ was in my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ and made it nearly impossible to get a good view of the overlook. Hot in that sun too. I’m not sure if I would drive Bald Mountain Road again, it sure was rough and parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ is very limited although next time I would have parked in designated Campsite 4.

I did enjoy poking around Catharine Marsh some more ๐Ÿฆ, I saw several Great Blue Heron, Semipalmated Plover, Monarch Butterfly ๐Ÿฆ‹ and lots of frogs ๐Ÿธ. While the loop trail through the woods is in disrepair, the former Airport Road Trail is hardened with gravel as it runs over a sewer pipe and offers more than a mile of trail to observe the marsh from points south and west along the Barge Canal. Really a great area. I want to study satellite ๐Ÿ›ฐ photos for future ideas on whether or not I can explore the area with a kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ.

Also the Watkins Glen Pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ was nice and not too crowded today. Stayed until 1 pm today, I would have stayed longer but there was a lot to see and do on my final day of summer vacation.

Tonight will be partly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 59 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 61 at 9pm. Light south wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1979.

Doesn’t seem like the big washout ๐Ÿ˜ญ they were originally promising for tomorrow. That’s fine its good to be home for a while and I have a busy work week ahead and sometimes being home means less distractions than trying to work from the woods. I did think ๐Ÿค” about staying at Cherry Ridge ๐Ÿ’ at least overnight but I decided it best to come home. I was out of food and for many reasons it just made more sense to come home and work from there.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 5% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 5:34 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:05 am in the east-northeast (71ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 4 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:43 am with sun in the east-northeast (77ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 35 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 74 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 2pm. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1913.

It will be a busy day when I get stated in the morning ๐Ÿ“‘ but I’m ready for a good week that goes by quickly. Already thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about a Schoharie County trip for next weekend including some time at the Mine Kill Pool. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In four weeks on September 13 the sun will be setting in the west (275ยฐ) at 7:08 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 46 minutes and 49 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 72 and 45 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 73 and 53 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1948.

Looking ahead, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 5 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 6 weeks, Last Sunset After 6:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 7 weeks, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 11 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 16 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 16 weeks, Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ is in 4 months, Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ is in 20 weeks and Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 26 weeks.

Along Osgood Pond

August 15, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Cloudy and 70 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. โ˜๏ธ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 5 am.

Final night of summer vacation. ๐ŸŒƒ All things have to come to an end. It’s been a very unusual year with the pandemic smoldering all around the world ๐ŸŒŽ but in some ways it inspired me to find new places to visit and new forms of socially distant recreation. ๐Ÿ˜ท Without the pandemic I might not have explored the Keuka Outlet Trail or the Catherine Valley Rail Trail or the Catherine Swamp WMA ๐Ÿธ and missed some really beautiful and wild country.

I don’t know how I had never driven or walked ๐Ÿค” Rock Cabin Road in Watkins Glen but it sure is beautiful. I wish I hadn’t left my binoculars in the truck as the marsh was full of wildlife ๐Ÿฆ† I wish I could have seen up close. It looks like there are some good paddling possibilities from the marsh but I didn’t have time with the threat of thunderstorm โ›ˆ and the sky getting dark. When I started to hear rumbles and looked at the radar I was concerned but if the weather was bad enough I could have probably thumbed ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป a ride back to the truck or found a relatively safe low lying place in the marsh or along the road. But it sure was dusty. ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ

I had tuna fish ๐Ÿ  salad ๐Ÿฅ— for dinner with several beers to wash it down. ๐Ÿป I’ve used up most of the last of the cold food so I didn’t buy ice today. I doubt the mayonese or sliced cheese ๐Ÿง€ will go bad if it gets a bit warm by evening but if it does its not a big loss. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Had a nice roaring fire for a while but I’ve let it burn down by bed time. I tried to straighten up camp โ›บ for easier take down after spending nine days at this site. Returned a bunch of cans at Walmart this evening so I have a lot less trash to bring home and I got my deposit back and a fresh case of beer ๐Ÿป. I know I won’t be littering and my campsite super clean when I leave.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 9pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1972.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 12% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:46 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:16 am in the east-northeast (70ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 3 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:55 am with sun in the east-northeast (77ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 8 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 18th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1936.

I am glad that I had coffee โ˜• for tomorrow morning. I have to think that I’m an caffeine addict but I’m sure was much happier this morning with my cups of joe. I have muffins for tomorrow which will be good. โ˜บ

I am in no rush to get going tomorrow and packed up and heading home. ๐Ÿก It all will depend if it’s raining โ˜” come morning but I’m quite content to lay back in the hammock and read a bit before taking down camp and then doing some of the Taughannock Rim Trail before heading home. Still thinking about going through Marathon and taking NY 23 at least part of the way home. Summer vacation has to come to an end but there are always future trips or so I hope. ๐Ÿ– COVID-19 is real and out there, but I tried to stay safe while enjoying the Finger Lakes.

Then it’s back to work Monday ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ but with remote work ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ it’s either a matter of going down to the library parking lot or using my new phone to get done what needs to be done. All the signs point ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป to a busy week next week but after my week off camping without cell service at camp I’m ready to make it happen.

I was looking and it seems like I need to renew my blog contract ๐Ÿ“œ come October. I’ll probably do it sooner than that and do the 3 or more years – whatever is the cheapest rate. ๐Ÿ’ต I like doing my blog and while I don’t make any money from it, really isn’t that expensive and it gives me an opportunity to think ๐Ÿค” and express my thoughts ๐Ÿ’ญ and experiences ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ.

I saw another one of my colleagues bought a house ๐Ÿก. Nice mid-century modern house, probably in the more suburban part of the city. โ˜บ๏ธ Yeah, I’m a bit jealous but it’s certainly not may way of living. But I’m only a few steps behind him and if I keep saving and investing I’ll be closer to that goal ๐Ÿฅ…. Of course, I think if rather live somewhere surrounded by corn fields ๐ŸŒฝ or forest ๐ŸŒฒ, some place small without grid power ๐Ÿ”Œ where I can have fires ๐Ÿ”ฅ, shoot guns ๐Ÿ”ซ and live the good life without any neighbors to give a damn. With cheap taxes ๐Ÿ’ฐ, no special government permission to carry guns ๐Ÿค  or improve your land or run my hobby farm ๐Ÿ. Land in rural areas is a lot cheaper and freer – especially in other states but it’s hard to make a living in the rural countryside, ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฆ‹๐ŸŒฑ although maybe the pandemic and increased remote work is changing that. โŒจ๏ธ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธ

As Malvina Reynolds once sung, “Little Boxes made out of ticky tacky”. If that was my only choice, I’d choose my moldy apartment. ๐Ÿ˜๏ธ

While my hammock stinks tonight after getting wet today in the rain and the Martin’s Permethrin I applied earlier in the week being somewhat unlocked, I continue to be very happy ๐Ÿ˜Š with the replacement hammock I bought more than two years ago to replace the shitty Eno / LL Bean branded hammock that had bad carabiners and then only months later ripped and wouldn’t be warranted. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ While I got the LL Bean with credit card reward points ๐Ÿ’ณ, it was expensive and within a year was placed in the camp trash ๐Ÿ—‘ and ultimately burnt to a crisp. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The cheap Chinese replacement I got on Ebay for $15 has lasted more than two years now and is still in good shape. That said, I do like the Eno straps, I still use them today with the China hammock. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ God bless those factory ๐Ÿญ slave workers who make quality inexpensive products.

In four weeks on September 12 the sun will be setting in the west (276ยฐ) at 7:22 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 46 minutes and 14 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 51 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 74 and 53 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 2 months, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 9 weeks, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ and the Blue Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 11 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 15 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 16 weeks, Bill of Rights Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 4 months, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 19 weeks, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 21 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 23 weeks, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 25 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 27 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 28 weeks.

Sailboats Along Grand Isle

August 14, 2020 8 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly clear and 76 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒŒThere is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees.

It was a nice day hiking the Catherine Valley Rail Trail ๐Ÿš‚. Not the most exciting trail ever but a nice walk through some well managed and scenic woods. A lot of it was timber country that is leased to a local hunting club. ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฆ† Some road noise from NY 14 but it ran pretty high above the valley on dirt viaducts cut into the mountainside.

In the afternoon I went for a swim at Watkins Glen State Park. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I thought the pool was too crowded for social distancing at four o’clock so I hopped out and by five it had thinned out so then I hopped in the pool. One thing nice about the Finger Lakes is the swimming areas are all open until 7 pm. โ˜บ

I thought about swimming at Enfield Gorge or at the Cayuga Lake beach ๐Ÿ– at Taughannock State Park but I feel like those bathrooms ๐Ÿšฟ are more cramped and less clean, and the natural water is not chlorinated so I’m hesitant. Plus the beach areas are smaller and cramped making social distancing more difficult.

I got ice cream one more time at Glen Dairy Bar ๐Ÿงthis time an apple sundae. ๐ŸI think this will be the last one for this trip, I’m kind of tired ๐Ÿ˜ด of eating so much ice cream. It’s been fun while it lasted during this trip. I told myself ice cream ๐Ÿฆnearly there would be my special little treat.

Watched the sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ from off Ball Diamond Road in the National Forest pasture again tonight. Another nice sunset, always pretty watching the sun set over the hills of the Finger Lakes and Seneca Lake.

Walked down to Foster Pond and watched the stars โœจ for a while. Saw four shooting stars ๐ŸŒ including one that was really bright and lit up the sky. Ended up falling asleep and was awoken by a bunch of drunk kids rafting in plastic blow up rafts on Foster Pond. ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ One of them offered me a partially drink can of white claw, during the pandemic. ๐Ÿป I declined and walked back to camp.

Running low on drinking water ๐Ÿ’ฆ and wanting something sweet I packed apple ๐Ÿ juice for hiking today. That was fine until I cross threaded the canteen and it leaked over my backpack. Fortunately I decided to leave the binoculars and camera ๐Ÿ“ธ in the truck. A bee was attracted to the backpack got stung in the arm. ๐Ÿ That hurt. The backpack was washed in the shower ๐Ÿšฟ and is drying now. Drank too much apple juice today and now I have the runs a bit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Hello bucket shitter! Getting full, going to emptied and buried โšฐ tomorrow when I break camp.

I am going to take a wait and see approach tomorrow. โ›… I am afraid it might be quite choppy on Seneca Lake by afternoon to paddle. ๐Ÿ›ถ If it’s kind of gray and dark out I might stay at camp. Although there are some additional marsh trails in Watkins Glen that I was reading ๐Ÿ“– about I’m thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about exploring.

Clouds Hanging Low

August 13, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Clear and 72 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees.

It was a nice day ๐Ÿ‘ to explore part of the Finger Lakes I had never been to before. The Kueka Outlet Trail is pretty darn neat winding through a gorge past numerous ruins of old mills. ๐Ÿค One thing that surprised me that there was enough water power to run all those mills – when I was there the water was flowing but hardly a torrent. It might be different in the spring or after a heavy rain storm โ˜” – it’s been a pretty dry summer in the Finger Lakes although nothing like 2015.

Hiked ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ from Penn Yan to Dresden a total of 13 miles round trip. While this is not a strenuous hike by any means – it’s a 200 feet ascent heading west over 6 1/2 miles it was still an all afternoon hike and I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด with the heat. I did do a short walk around downtown Penn Yan ๐Ÿ™ which still has a fairly intact main street then visited the village park overlooking the lake. Ironically, when you are at one of the tips or Keuka Lake you really don’t get that scenic of a vista as all you see is the tine of the fork ๐Ÿดand big hill in the center.

Came back and got ice at Dandy Mart. Forgot to buy coffee โ˜• again for the morning. Spent a little time down at Clute Park but I was tired ๐Ÿ’ค and didn’t want to drive to camp in the dark so I left before sunset ๐ŸŒ‡. Came back and had hot dogs and beer ๐ŸŒญ๐Ÿบ, I’m definitely ready for bed now.

I thought about hiking to Foster Pond but after a few beers ๐Ÿป and all the walking ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ I did today, I decided it’s not advisable. I’m just super tired. I find it hard to get as good of night sleep in the woods as I do at home, especially if I stay up late and then wake up when the sun โ˜€ is pouring in my window. โฌœ

I have a bunch of pictures to upload ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ but I’ll wait until tomorrow when I head into town. I wanted to process them a bit more on my phone before uploading. I also have some pictures I want to get off my dash cam to upload.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 1am. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1941.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 28% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:14 am in the east-northeast (69ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 4 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:53 am with sun in the east-northeast (76ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 3 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

Going to be another hot and sunny day tomorrow. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I think it would be a good day to spend one more day at the Watkins Glen State Park pool on a relatively quiet weekday. and maybe hike more of the Catharine Valley Rail Trail, maybe south of Montour Falls this time. ๐Ÿš‚ And maybe one last ice cream cone at Glen Dairy Bar. ๐ŸฆSaturday I will probably stay in the National Forest for social distancing purposes but I’m thinking of doing some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ and swimming of Caywood Point and maybe if it seems like the water is calm, paddling from Watkins Glen to Hector Point. Sunday I probably will hang out at camp for a while then maybe go for a hike around the rim of Taughannock and then head home around 1 pm, probably via NY 23.๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ

It seems odd that this trip I haven’t visited the Taughannock Gorge so far ๐Ÿ•‹ or Enfield Glen. While I like those places a lot they tend to be crowded and I have little interest in visiting any crowded places during the pandemic. I am trying to keep this trip simple and relaxing plus visiting new places in the Finger Lakes that I’ve not spent a lot of time in the past. Gorges are great but I am really truly hard to maintain social distancing. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆWhile COVID-19 doesn’t have me hiding all the time in my home, I really try to avoid places where maintaining social distancing is impossible.๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Before hiking today I sprayed heavily my hammock with another coat of Martin’s Permethrin. ๐Ÿœ Bugs haven’t been bad camping but I figured it’s a nice low humidity, non windy day so it should soak in good as some time in the future might be buggy again. Permethrin has a bit of a funny smell at first but it dissappears after airing out. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

In four weeks on September 10 the sun will be setting in the west (277ยฐ) at 7:25 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 37 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 54 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1931.

Looking ahead, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 4 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 5 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ and Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 7 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 9 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ is in 3 months, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 15 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 17 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 19 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 20 weeks, Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก is in 5 months, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 22 weeks, Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 24 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 26 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 27 weeks.
