December 7, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Two weeks to First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ. Partly sunny and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ… There is a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Kind of a cool Monday but the sun โ˜€ helps when it’s out pretty decently warm. Out for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. It certainly a decent day for December. I kind of had a sluggish start this Monday but I did my walk and will sit down with breakfast and my second cup of coffee โ˜• as I get my work day started from home today. ๐Ÿก Later in the week I’ll be heading downtown for meetings.

Yesterday was kind of a quiet and cold โ„ day, but went out to my parents house for a while. I thought they’d be going into lock down ๐Ÿ”’ but apparently not yet. I looked at the statistics and it’s obvious that it’s only a matter of time before the pamademic gets a bit out of hand in Upstate NY although hopefully this time we will have the vaccine to slow it down a bit. ๐Ÿฅ˜

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 34 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 20th. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 31 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1998. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 2003.โ„

Cold but sunny today it looks. โ˜€๏ธ That’s to be expected for December. No snow today but maybe some on Thursday. I don’t care that much although I’d like to get one more trip in before the end of the year.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:48 am with sun having an altitude of 24.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated snow showers between 9pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 23 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 10th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 12am; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 1 degrees. The record low of -3 occurred back in 1902.

Today in 1787, Delaware becomes the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. ๐Ÿ“ƒ And for football fans in 1963, Instant replay makes its debut during the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.๐Ÿˆ 1972 today marked the end of an era — Apollo 17, the last Apollo moon mission, is launched. ๐ŸŒŽ The crew takes the photograph known as The Blue Marble as they leave the Earth.

I bought two more face masks from Lynne Jackson. ๐Ÿ˜ท I kind of like the one I bought from her earlier in the year and I think at some point I’ll be working downtown more ๐Ÿ™ and need more masks. Even if we turn the corner on the virus it’s going to be bad for a while – and maybe wearing a mask occasionally even when the pandemic is over is a good way to avoid getting or spreading a cold. ๐Ÿคฎ Lynne’s masks are quite comfortable plus it’s a great way to support a local activist. While I mostly wear the bandana outside when I’m downtown it’s good to have a good mask.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 48. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

I was hoping to get out of town this weekend โ›บ but despite the snow melting warmth not much sun. Maybe for Christmas or New Years. It looks like December will be pretty mild for a change. I guess that’s good during a pandemic.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cold, partly cloudy and temperatures between 24 and 8 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2018.

December 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Lately I’ve not been doing evening blog posts ๐Ÿ“ but it’s a fairly nice evening for sitting out back at least by December standards. ๐ŸŽ„ I have my coat ๐Ÿงฅ on but I’m comfortable as there isn’t a breeze. I figure the more time I spend outside, the less chances of catching the COVID.

Speaking of the COVID, ๐Ÿ‘พ that New York Times county level COVID data ๐Ÿค“ is quite interesting and I am going to experiment with it for making maps and other content for the blog over the weekend. I also want to do more reading ๐Ÿ“– on the book ๐Ÿ“™ I got about homesteading, ๐Ÿšœ and do some soldering projects. Definitely get dreaming about a better tomorrow, looking at all that rural land on Zillow. ๐Ÿฎ

Except for the rainy Tuesday morning and my lazy then rainy Monday ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป, I’ve been walking every 12 hours around the 2.5 mile super block around the high school ๐Ÿšธ. It’s good exercise although I a admit I’m getting a bit bored with it. It just feels so redudent but it’s good exercise and a safe walk at night without many road crossings although part of the walkway is pretty dark this time of year. I do go opposite directions in my morning and evening walks. No walking tomorrow with the cold rain expected.

Did a quick wash of my truck today, went to the store and the library to work. ๐Ÿ–ฅ I also bought a small space heater fan, โ™จ something I thought about getting for years but never did. But working at home this winter โ„ I wanted something I could turn on to quickly warm my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป especially after walking outdoors without heating the whole apartment by raising the main gas radiators downstairs or the expensive to operate electric baseboard upstairs which I’m loath to operate and always stink the few times I do use them. Plus now I’m well stocked on groceries for the weekend. ๐Ÿฒ

Tonight will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 36 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1989.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 78% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the east-northeast (76ยฐ) at an altitude of 18ยฐ from the horizon, some 237,276 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by June 2nd. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Cold โ˜ƒ Moon is on Monday, December 21. The darkest hour is at 11:47 pm, followed by dawn at 6:39 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:10 am in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:55 am with sun in the southeast (128ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 11 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain before 10am, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 38 degrees at 8am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Breezy, with a north wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 2001. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1902.โ„

Definitely a stay at home day tomorrow. ๐Ÿก But I will have plenty to occupy myself as long as I’m good and stay off social media. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I should just completely turn off my phone tomorrow. Maybe I will.

In four weeks on January 1 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) at 4:32 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 39 seconds later then tonight. In 2020 on that day, we had cloudy, mild temperatures snow showers and temperatures between 40 and 34 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 31 and 16 degrees. The record high of 57 degrees was set back in 1966.

I honestly don’t think 2020 was that bad, ๐Ÿค” certainly not for me. But I’m really ready for a new year and a new start. I kind of enjoyed all the oddities of 2020, made some good money and great memories โ›บ, traveling and working remotely. ๐Ÿ˜ท I guess the pandemic was kind of bad for a lot of folks but I liked the change. ๐ŸŽ„ And a Merry Christmas to you on three weeks. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿฟ

Looking ahead, Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช is in 2 weeks, Christmas ๐ŸŽ… is in 3 weeks, New Years Day 2021 ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 4 weeks, Bubble Bath Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 5 weeks and 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 8 weeks.

 Struggling Fire

November 30, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Final day of November 2020. Happy Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŒ•! I don’t need any of your shit marketers. Three weeks to First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ. Rain and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around noontime. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Kind of a lazy morning. ๐Ÿ˜ด With the clouds and my general drowsiness from taking the sleeping pill ๐Ÿ’Š I skipped my morning walk. I’ll be the first to admit it was kind of a mistake though, as now the rain has set in I don’t think an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป will be practical without getting soaked. Not sure how busy today will be but projects always seem to pop up. My gear โš™ is unpacked and I’m ready for the work week ahead. Tomorrow I’ll probably work down at the library. ๐Ÿ“š At some point I want to return beer cans โ™ป and refill the propane tank ๐Ÿฎ.

Today will rain. The rain could be heavy at times. ๐ŸŒง High of 54 degrees at 6pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 29th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Warm but not great outdoors weather. Light and variable wind becoming north 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1933. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 1972.โ„

While there is some things I could probably do at the library Wi-Fi today ๐Ÿ“ถ, including a work Zoom Meeting, I want to experiment with doing it from home using my phone. It’s a pretty cold and rainy day and my camera would likely fog up if I used my laptop at the library. I am curious how well the Zoom app will work on my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ and how much bandwidth it will use. That said, if I upgrade to the Wi-Fi Hotspot plan I will unlimited phone data, with a 10 or 20 gig cap on my hotspot data. But that’s still a shit ton more affordable than a permanent wired connection and it gives me more options for travel so I’m not stuck working from home. As it’s month to month, I can drop the Hotspot plan once things get back to normal and I can just walk down to the library and am working in the office where there is WI-FI. ๐Ÿข The ten or twenty bucks a month can come out of money I ordinarily spend on bus fare when working downtown. ๐Ÿš

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:45 am with sun having an altitude of 25.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:40 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (241ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon in the east-northeast (62ยฐ) at an altitude of 3ยฐ from the horizon, 248,648 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 52 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 26 seconds over yesterday.

John Wolcott called and canceled the filming ๐Ÿ“น tonight, as they are going into isolation with his advanced age. I totally get it. I’ve gotten through many of his files ๐Ÿ“‚ and learned a lot about Albany history, and recorded many hours of his history. Maybe we will do more through Zoom in the future although that can be hard without me having internet at home.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 10pm. ๐ŸŒง Low of 51 degrees at 5am. 24 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 18th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 8pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 9 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1875.

Doesn’t look like a super nice weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 40 degrees.

I doubt I’ll be going out to my parents house with the impending lock down, ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ so I’ll have to find other projects to keep me busy this weekend. Maybe I’ll do some walks around town or get some books ๐Ÿ“š out of the library. The drive through pick up is easy for sure. I should work on some electronics projects too. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cold, partly cloudy and temperatures between 24 and 8 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 34 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2018.

I am thinking with things on the likely locked down ๐Ÿ”’ for the holidays, I might plan camping trips for Christmas and New Years as I have both eves off for long weekends and could even potentially tag additional days off if I remote work ๐Ÿ’ป. I think a Christmas Eve camping trip would be fun. ๐ŸŽ„ Decorate up the campsite, listen to Christmas music ๐Ÿคถ๐Ÿป๐ŸŽถ especially if there is a reasonable amount of snow ๐ŸŒจ and it’s not too cold.

There are 9 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I am heading up to the Adirondacks for the weekend โ›บ although I’m not rushing as today isn’t a really nice day but tonight should be mild and tomorrow nice after the rain pulls out. โ˜” I will have my tent with me although I’m not sure if I will set it up to hot tent. No snow anywhere in the Adirondacks and temperatures well above freezing so that creates additional camping opportunities. โ„

I am just started getting packed now ๐Ÿ’ผ although I honestly don’t have that much gear I need for two nights in the woods. Definitely will want the heater especially if it’s cold and damp tomorrow morning until the sun comes out. ๐ŸŒž

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 52 degrees at 12pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 6th. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Good evening! Foggy ๐ŸŒ and 49 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 4 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It was a nice Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ with the family. Small little thing but it was nice to spend some time with them before the lock down. ๐Ÿ”’ The COVID numbers are looking bad all around but hopefully when the vaccine starts flowing in a couple of weeks the tied will be stemmed. Heading up to the Adirondacks tomorrow through Sunday. โ›บ Not totally sure yet where but I have a short list. I want to leave by around ten tomorrow and stop to buy some hot coca. โ˜• Tomorrow doesn’t seem like a really nice sunny day so I’ll probably not rush up north. If I do any hiking up a mountain it will be on Sunday I think on my way home.

In four weeks on December 24 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) at 4:26 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 2 minutes later then tonight. Pancakes on a rainy morning

November 26, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Happy Thanksgiving. ๐Ÿฆƒ Hopefully you’re not one sick ๐Ÿคฎ turkey with COVID-19 and are enjoying your day. Rain and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. There are 9 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I am pretty good although I slept in ๐Ÿ˜ด because I woke early and ended up listening to the news before falling back asleep again. ๐Ÿ“ป Then I got working on a bunch of different projects on my computer. I am trying to stay off the internet – the amount of doom scrolling ๐Ÿ“œ one can do is a terrible waste of time.

Thanksgiving Day ๐Ÿฆƒ will have a chance of showers, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 54 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 1st. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1979. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

As I noted yesterday heading out to the parents house for a socially distant Thanksgiving around tray tables. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ†”๏ธ๐Ÿง”๐Ÿป๐Ÿ—๐Ÿฝ๏ธ It will be fun to do before everything really shuts down as the pandemic really climbs the next few weeks. I’m already planning to work primarily from home this winter ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’ป, having figured out how to do it with my phone as a hot spot.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž was at 11:44 am with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy , with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. ๐ŸŒซ 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 9th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 1957.

I have the groceries I need and will be heading up to the Adirondacks tomorrow for a few days. โ›บ I do think I want to stop for hot coca โ˜• on the way up there and maybe a few other supplies but I want to get up there pretty early as the sun sets early ๐ŸŒ‡ this time of year. Do some short hiking from camp, listen to a lot of podcasts and retire to bed ๐Ÿ› fairly early. I could hot tent but I don’t think it neccesary for this weekend.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a slight chance of showers before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm.
