December 21, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy First Day of Winter ☃️! I think it started around 5:15 this morning, well before I was awake. 87 days until spring, days get longer tomorrow. 🌷 Next Monday is 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆. Mostly cloudy and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. There are 21 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ Definitely melting with the higher temperatures yesterday and the sun ☀ on Saturday. Not so much sun today but maybe some later. ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️

I don’t know if the sidewalks fully plowed at this point ❄ but I think enough are done to get out for my morning walk 🚶🏻. At any rate I no longer have an excuse to skip my walk at least in the daytime hours, they’re done past the high school. 🚸 I’m hoping by evening that Elm Avenue will finally have its sidewalks plowed – the snow storm was last week.

Not a lot of big things on the agenda today for work, 💼 but I think things will pop up as the day progresses. Tomorrow I plan to work down at the library as it will be sunny ☀ and relatively warm. I should also get propane on Tuesday and supplies for camping 🏕 should I head north on Christmas Day. 🎅🏻 Hoping that the snow and warm temperatures will reduce the size of snow banks up north dramatically.

Today will have patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ⛅ , with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 19th. Light south wind. Maybe some more sun later. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became mostly clear by afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2018. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 2008.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:55 am with sun having an altitude of 23.9° from the due south horizon (-46.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:40 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 4:57 pm, which is 30 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south-southeast (160°) at an altitude of 40° from the horizon, 248,971 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:34 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, an increase of 3 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow after 1am. Mostly cloudy 🌨, with a low of 27 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 2nd. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1955.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 6 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. 😃 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 26. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

I am hoping to get north this weekend. 🌨 Winter camping is fun, and while it might be cold I will dress warmly 🧣🧤 and have the propane heater for keeping the tent toasty. ♨ Nights are long but they can be fun this time of year.

As previously noted, next Monday is 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 with dusk at 5:01 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 44 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1982.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. ⛪ Third Sunday of advent, last day of autumn 2020. Winter 2021 starts tomorrow. That said it’s going to warm up a lot this week with possibly heavy rain on Christmas Eve. 🎄 ☔ Two weeks to Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄️. Mostly cloudy and 21 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 10. There are 21 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. 🌡️

Yesterday was nice cross country skiing 🎿 at Schodack Island. That said I really enjoyed the Christmas 🤶🏻 Spice Cookies 🍪 they have at Aldi’s. Cheap too and so good. I really need to get over to Rennselear more often. Well with winter I probably will ski more at Schodack Island as there isn’t the hills there to fall on as my skiis are fairly aggressive, designed for groomed trails. I saw a fair number of bright red robins and Blue Jays out there and lots of eastern sparrows. 🐦 Kind of a pretty sunset 🌇 and I ran into one of Albany’s most chatty insiders there 🗣️ and we chatted for a while until right before the park was locked 🔒 for the evening. Fun though, and I got to learn all the gossips about Albany.

I tell you when I own my own land, 🛒 I hope to live near enough a town that has an Aldi’s – they’re cheap, fun and so convenient. While they don’t have the selection of a Wally World or the bulk goods, 🍱 I like their product selection. True, sometimes the lower their prices by smaller packages 📦 but as they say, the burn barrel gotta eat too. 🔥 Plus a good library to download podcasts, 🎧 and a laundromat. 👚 I wouldn’t mind living out in the sticks 🐮 in a town that smells like silage and manure some of the year but it’s nice to have access to the basics. Good gun shop 🔫 too.

You can forget what an agricultural county Rennselear is but while I was shopping 🛒 at Aldi, I spotted a Toyota Tundra with a big metal flask in the backseat. It caught my eye 👁‍🗨 and it turned out to be a bucket milker. 🐮 Dairy farmer, maybe a small scale operation or maybe they’re using it to milk a cow that is on the withdrawal period from antibiotics or for feeding calves. Big unit though, must be heavy when it’s full of milk but then again Holstein do produce a lot of milk 🥛. Upstate NY may have fewer farms but there are still a lot of people who homestead and live off the land – and Aldi’s is such an affordable option.

At any rate, yesterday was nice ☀ and pretty sunny although a bit cold but nice when I was moving. Getting off the trails though was a bit of slog with the skiis though. 🎿 I thought about going up to Partridge Run but it’s still black powder season 🦌 and I’d be drowned out probably by the noise of snow machines.

Today will snow showers likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 32 degrees at 5pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 27th. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 21 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1957. 8.4 inches of snow fell back in 1975.❄

Not a super nice day out today 🌨️ just very gray. I told mom and dad I’d be out for Sunday dinner assuming that it doesn’t snow too much. 🍲 It will be nice to see them. I’m really not out and about in the community lately and we’ll stay socially distant. I do go to the supermarket 🛒 from time but I wear a mask 😷 and any COVID positive person I might be near its very passing at that.

Dash cam hasn’t been working right for some time now. 📹 It looked like it was crashing. I am going to try reformatting the memory cards 🎴 and installing the latest firmware update and clean the lens off. I really like capturing some scenes from my trips on the dash cam but it hasn’t been working reliaby all autumn. It is about four years old and though is exposed to all the heat and cold in the windshield so maybe a capictor or the alike is failing.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:54 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:40 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 27 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south (174°) at an altitude of 37° from the horizon, 246,764 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 6 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 9pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 26 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Maximum wind chill around 24 at 4am; South wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had light rain. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1942.

They still haven’t done the sidewalks near where I live ❄ which is super obnoxious. I thought about a day time walk 🚶🏻 – it’s plowed on the Bypass sidewalks but not Elm at this point. I guess it’s just a lot of snow, there has been budget cuts and probably workers are quarrentined with COVID. 👾 I don’t know, it’s frustrating 😤 as I sure miss my morning and evening walks, especially as I work from home these days.

Today a train moved very fast in America — that is relatively speaking. 🚉 In 1967, a Pennsylvania Railroad Budd Metroliner exceeds 155 mph on their New York Division, now Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. But they would never operate that fast and frequently broke down and would be scrapped by the late 1980s or used as coaches towed by diesel locomotives. But the truth is that Penn Central was in bad shape by the 1960s, and while the Northeast Corridor was still profitable to the system, the entire railroad suffered from Penn Central decades of neglect.

Tuesday I am thinking I’ll work down at the library parking lot 🅿 for probably the balance of the day. It’s going to be in the upper 30s and sunny ☀ so it should be warm enough. I have a Zoom meeting then and I have plenty of cellular bandwidth I still prefer to use the library wifi 📚 as then I can do the Zoom from my laptop do other things while the meeting drags on. Plus I want to do some things with WMS map services and I don’t want to use too much of my limited Hotspot data on my phone. 📱

It looks like Christmas Eve 🎅🏻 is going to be warm and rainy, ☔ so I’m hoping that I can go up to the Adirondacks for a long weekend of winter camping 🏕 with the hot tent starting Christmas Day. Its been a while since I’ve slept outside and that really does wonders for my sleep.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Latest Sunrise of the Winter 🌄️ when the sun will be setting at 4:34 pm with dusk at 5:06 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, mild, rain showers and temperatures between 47 and 39 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1913.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. A cold weekend ! Next Saturday is Boxing Day 🥊. Mostly sunny and 5 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. There are 21 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡️

Today I’m heading out to Schodack Island to cross country ski 🎿 and watch the birds 🐦. But first I want it to warm up a bit. It’s a cold morning for sure but sunny. 🌅 Then I plan to go to Aldi’s and get some groceries. 🛒

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 24 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 18 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1895. 7.8 inches of snow fell back in 2008.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:54 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 24 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south (187°) at an altitude of 33° from the horizon, 244,168 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 23 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 10 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 18 degrees at 6pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 24th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 7pm; Calm wind. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1951.

They still haven’t gotten the sidewalks done on Elm Avenue or Delaware Avenue so I ended up walking on Cherry Avenue. 🚶🏻 I am still a bit annoyed it but it was a big snow storm but I don’t like how they prioritize it over the sidewalks. At least I got a good 40 minutes outside tromping through the snow. 👢 No wind and with the thermal underwear it wasn’t too cool.

Working from home and now with the sidewalks full of snow 🌨, I feel so cooped up these days. I even did the days Zoom Meetings from home 📹 using my cellphone. It actually used less data than I expected but next week I’m upgrading to the unlimited mobile data / 20 GB Hotspot so I can make it through the winter when it’s too cold and dark to work at the library or park.

I have to renew my driver’s license again. I can do it online but I’m annoyed it’s $94.50 after just re-registered my truck. I do my eyes 👀 checked in a year but I should probably go to the eye doctor this year because I haven’t in two and a half years now. I ordered my last batch of contacts online and as the price has come down online and my prescription rarely changes I ordered a bigger than normal order. 💵 Do I wait until the pandemic is over to get my eyes checked or do it now when it’s easier when working from home? I’ll have to think about it more.

Today in 1974, Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President of the United States 👴🏼 under President Gerald Ford under the provisions of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution. America 🇺🇸 didn’t get an errection with Rockefeller unlike Albany when he got elected.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Boxing Day 🥊 when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 5:00 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 41 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.

Good morning! Happy Bake Cookies Day 🍪! A good cold snowy ☃ day for baking cookies. Next Friday is Christmas 🎅. Partly cloudy and 9 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is -2. There are 21 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. 🌡️

I am up early but it doesn’t seem likely I’ll be going for my morning walk ❄, but I guess that’s okay as it’s cold outside. Hopefully by the evening. I can be cranky about the incompetence of town leaders but what can I do about it, a less than humble boy 🧒🏻 from the sticks. Maybe I’ll ride my exercise bike 🚲 later and go for the walk around 5 pm, by when hopefully most of snow will be cleaned up.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 30 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal. North wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1921. 17.0 inches of snow fell back in 1887.❄ Seems small after yesterday’s snow storm.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite 🛰 is launched today in 1958. Didn’t do much communicating compared to satellites today. A decade or so before the first GPS satellites. 💫 Of course it’s hard to imagine a modern economy today without satellite data or GPS technology to provide both timing and location data.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 30 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming south around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 18 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1895. 7.8 inches of snow fell back in 2008.❄

I am thinking about going skiing 🎿 at Schodack Island State Park tomorrow with the binoculars and look at the winter birds. 🕊 Then maybe pick up some supplies at Aldi’s. 🛒 I should try to get an early start tomorrow while the sun is still shining.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of snow showers before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a chance of snow showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. ⛅ Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

As previously noted, next Friday is Christmas 🎅 when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. At least we are getting more sunshine in the afternoon. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 39 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.

Not sure if I’m getting up to the Adirondacks next weekend. 🎄 I want to but I’m not sure if that’s a realistic goal with the weather. Maybe Christmas Day through Sunday. But it’s going to be real cold. ❄ I don’t know.

Good morning! Happy Thursday after the Snow Storm. 🌨 Thanks to the Corona there are no more snow days but also no more buses to tromp through 👢 in the snow Next Thursday is Christmas Eve 🎅. Snow and 17 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a north breeze at 13 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 4. Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. 🌡️Long cold period ahead but my apartment is eaem

Honestly I am not impacted by the storm 🌨, as I don’t have to go anywhere today as I’ll work from home. 🏡 I do dig out my truck. I did knock the snow off my truck and later on today I’ll pull off the tarp and shovel off the truck. 🚚 This evening I’ll probably go out for my walk once the sidewalks are plowed. It’s a lot of snow but so be it. The Adirondacks didn’t get a lot snow although more than expected but I don’t think I’ll get up there for camping 🏕 at least not until Christmas Day. 🎄🎅🏻❄

Work has been busy the past few days 📝, but I’ve been getting good at moving files 📂 between my phone and laptop. I actually prefer using my phone over the computer because I can carry it around in my hand 🖐🏻 and I’m not forced to be chained to a desk. 🔗 Next week I have to renew my phone 📱 plan and I’m going to month to month and I will then have 20 gb of Hotspot data for things I can’t do through my phone. 📶 I expect another busy day, I have an afternoon meeting and more plans to review.

Today will snow, mainly before noon. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 High of 23 degrees at 12pm. 12 degrees below normal. North wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1984. 11.1 inches of snow fell back in 1970.❄

Going to be cold the next few days. ❄ But except for digging out my truck and my morning and evening walks 🚶🏻 I don’t have to leave home. My heat is working well this year, and that little heater I bought the other day quickly takes the chill off the room and when used occasionally it doesn’t cost that much to operate – according to my Kill-a-Watt meter. Obviously it wouldn’t work with my inverter or solar power but when I have my own land I’ll have a woodstove for heat. ♨

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 20 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the south-southwest (210°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 238,365 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 22 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ☁️, with a low of 11 degrees at 6am. Nine degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 3 at 5am; North wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1919.

I am continuing to experiment with the 3D mapping 🗺 feature of QGIS. I’m thinking about doing some snow ❄ depth maps. Among other things that I can do with the technology. I kind of wish I had regular internet at home for WMS streams 🌐 so I could do more renderings using aerial photos

The other day I downloaded the first volume of the Foxfire Book 📙 and have been reading it on my phone. I actually like reading books on my phone – the pages flip like a book but my phone is lightweight and fits in a single hand.

Today in 1777 during the American Revolution, France formally recognizes the United States. 🍟 Now we celebrate 🎉 with freedom fries in PFOA lined containers although not for much longer.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Christmas Eve 🎅 when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 42 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015.

Good morning! Happy Tea Party Day 🐍! Honestly if you are going to dump a bunch of tea, 🍵 I think it would be better to dump it and mix it with a bunch of manure 💩 for composting then dumping it in the Boston Harbor ⚓ where it can deplete the dissolved oxygen in the water 💦. But I agree 👍🏻 we are over taxed and we tax the wrong things – namely income over carbon emissions and waste generation. 💸 Next Wednesday is Festivus 🍖. I am still banned from my parents meatloaf which is loaded with Worcester sauce after telling them I preferred the stuff a college 🎓.

It’s the calm before the storm. Mostly cloudy and 13 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. 🌡️

It’s a cold morning ❄ and it looks like we are now going to get more snow 🌨 than originally expected. But who knows. Kind of cold for my morning walk 🚶🏻 and I keep putting my phone in my pocket and sticking my hands 👐🏻 there to stay warm. ♨ I guess working from home 🏡 means the snow won’t effect me much but it never did because the buses 🚍 run regardless of the weather. 🎄 It doesn’t look like much snow up north which is good if I want to get up there for Christmas weekend. Debating if I should put a tarp on my truck over the cap and windshield for easy snow removal. ☀️ I like to keep the batteries 🔋 trickle charged off the solar when it gets cold.

Today will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 24 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal. Northeast wind around 6 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1971. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.❄

I have kind of busy day today but I’ll work from home most likely. 📶 Those 3d maps are fun but I need broadband to make them. But it would be a cold day to work at the library parking lot so I think I’ll stay home. The other work stuff I can do from my phone moving the files 📂 to my laptop for editing.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:52 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 18 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the southwest (220°) at an altitude of 13° from the horizon, 235,459 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 24 degrees. There will be a northeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will snow, mainly after 8pm. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 21 degrees at 8pm. Typical for tonight. Northeast wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 8 to 12 inches possible. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1942.

Yeap, it’s going to snow 🌨. I think I can probably do my evening walk 🚶🏻 if I can get an early enough start there shouldn’t be too much snow on the ground and walking in the snow is always nice. Thursday morning maybe not so much but I could strap on skis I guess. 🎿

Today in 1965, the Vietnam War would escalate. 💣 General William Westmoreland sends U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara a request for 243,000 more men by the end of 1966.🪖 And in Cleveland, Ohio becomes the first major American city to default on its financial obligations since the Great Depression. 💸 Good ol Dennis Kuchich and the big creditors of the Cleveland Power and Light company. A big set back for the public power industry 🏭. You don’t hear much from Dennis Kuchich anymore but I guess he’s pretty elderly 👴🏼 now. But aren’t we all getting old?

It looks like we will have decent snow for the weekend. ❄ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 29. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

I am thinking that Saturday would be a nice day for cross country skiing 🎿 at Schodack Island State Park. I could then stock up on groceries 🍞🍲 at Aldi’s. They have an interesting of variety of things for cheap although less bulk than Wally World.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Festivus 🍖 when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 50 and 18 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1990.

Good morning! Happy Bill of Rights Day 📜! While the constitution is just a sheet of paper it’s important we elect good people to enforce it. ⚖ Next Tuesday the Days are Getting Longer ☀️. Looking forward to that. Already we are starting to get a little more daylight in the evening although that’s offset by super dark mornings that have been particularly cloudy lately.

Mostly sunny and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. Breezy, ️16 mph breeze from the northwest 🌬 . The current wind chill is 15. 🌅 Things will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌡️

Even with the relatively low sun angle, ☀ the bright sun and blue skies help a lot. Out for my morning walk 🚶🏻 not any snow or ice to deal with. It looks like the impending snow storm 🌨 is going to stay south of us for the most part, just cloudy and cold for us here. And certainly not a ton of snow in the Adirondacks which is what I really care about for a Christmas weekend camping trip. 🎄

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 31 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, colder than a typical winter day. Northwest wind 15 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. But I don’t care, the cold is keeping the snow south of us it seems. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968.❄

I have a few supplies I want to pick up today 🏪 and then I will go down to the library to work. 💻 I also have a Zoom with a community group I’m involved in, I plan to listen to that in the background. The store stock tool says that Walmart has headphones in stock again so I’m hoping to pick them up. 🎧 Kind of a cold day but once my truck is warmed up with the sun I should be fine ☀ working from the parking lot. Tomorrow with the snow 🌨 and probably mostly clouds, I’ll work from home. If I end up burning up too much data that’s fine, I need to reup my plan come next Wednesday and if I loose a day off my year long plan then so be it. I may need the extra bandwidth for work next week at any rate. 📶

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:52 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.7° vs. 6/21). The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 15 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the southwest (230°) at an altitude of 5° from the horizon, 232,750 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. I turned on my little portable electric heater ♨ before bed for a little while last night. I think it’s cheaper than turning up the heat downstairs. Last month I only paid 13.1 cents for each extra kilowatt hour I consumed and if I’m only using it for a few minutes here and there it’s cheaper than turning the main heat up. So far in the week I’ve had it I’ve only used it fit a few hours. I’m thinking about also getting a heating pad as an inexpensive way to stay warm this winter. I’m not thrilled about being home all winter and having the heat on all day even if it’s on low. My bill was $72 last month and it remains elevated through the winter.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed under the weight of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Two of the victims were never found. 🌉 The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge carried U.S. Route 35 over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) deep. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and had been poorly maintained. The collapsed bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge, which was completed in 1969.

Also, today in 2000, was an the end of an era at the infamous Chernobyl Power Plant. Reactor No. 4 was the site of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. ☢ Both the zone and the former power plant are administered by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. The three remaining reactors remained operational after the accident; all three were eventually shut down by 2000, and the plant remains in the process of decommissioning. 🤯 Nuclear clean-up is scheduled for completion in 2065.
