Happy Earth Day! ๐ŸŒŽ

Going to be a beautiful day for riding to work. Carrot pancakes, need to stop at Hannaford to get bananas on the way in as a snack as I’ve not been shopping this week. Felt good to toss that empty plastic milk bottle in the trash on Earth Day knowing soon enough I’ll get it burnt, lol. Makes an excellent fire starter. Gotta celebrate Vladmir Lennin’s birthday with a little black smoke, as you turn the dirt with your plow or spreading manure on this Earth Day.

Good morning! Mostly sunny and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Didn’t get a real early start ๐Ÿ› as when I first awoke I had a bit of nausea like I had been spinning. ๐ŸคฏBut once I finally got out of bed, got some coffee and carrot ๐Ÿฅ• pancakes ๐Ÿฅž in me I was feeling better. I think I just have a bad case of the Monday’s. I am looking forward to the ride to work today, going to be a nice day. The weekend was cloudy, colder and wetter then expected but I had a lot of fun in the woods and a nice fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, rode some trail ๐Ÿšต and went for a nice five mile hike at Huyck Preserve.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 55 degrees at 5pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 7th. Northwest wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1985. 1.0 inches of snow fell back in 1928.โ„

Going to stop on the way to work and get some bananas and apples at Hannaford ๐ŸŽ ๐ŸŒ Got to fuel up for the busy week ahead, and I like having lots of fresh fruits and veggies to snack on when I’m in the office.  ๐Ÿคค On the bike ride home I will stop and get more onions ๐Ÿง… and frozen fruit and veggies, and try to use up what I have around the apartment rather then doing a full grocery shop ๐Ÿ›’ until at least Wednesday, as I want to get down to the park after work to walk and read.  ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿ“š๏ธ I figure why fire up Red and spend a bunch of money on groceries ๐Ÿ›ป when I have a fair amount bar the fruit and vegetables, ๐Ÿ„ which I can pick up riding to and from work. Also need to get more milk at Stewart’s. I know more plastic!

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.8° from the due south horizon (-11.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:07 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:46 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 8:15 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (119°) at an altitude of 16° from the horizon, 250,219 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:52 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 51 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

I think it’s interesting how the greenies this year are focusing on single use plastics ๐Ÿ’š on Earth Day. Gets a little bit silly but I think they needed a new issue as they got their climate legislation through on the state level ๐ŸŒŽ but only time will tell what the effect is beyond using a lot of farm land and forest for massive solar farms. I’d be more concerned about the really toxic things in garbage today like all the electronics commonly discarded. โ˜ ๏ธ Or all the wasted building materials not the silly little plastic water bottles that are a tiny part of waste production made out of the least toxic forms of plastic – polyethylene. โ™ป I really should get milk ๐Ÿฅ› delivery set up with Meadow Brook but it’s a pain having to call as they don’t have a website, and at least in the winter months I do recycle most of the discarded Stewart’s milk bottles. I wish they still had milk in glass for less trash like Byrne Dairy does. ๐Ÿฎ I don’t drink as much milk as I once did since getting into healthy eating, preferring to drink more water from the tap, ๐Ÿšฐ but I still think those milk bottles take up much too much room in the trash or the recycle  โ™ป๏ธ when so inclined.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 31 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 1st. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming south after midnight. In 2023, we had thunderstorm in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1975.

First half of the weekend looks decent Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 62. Maximum dew point of 41 at 4pm. โ˜€ Not too bad but certainly can change. Sunday, a chance of showers. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 53 at 3pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. It is what it is, good I got out last weekend.

I am not opposed to doing a three-day weekend and heading up to the Adirondacks  ๐Ÿ•๏ธ  but only f the weather looks good. It would be nice to spend some time in the wilderness, have a good fire  ๐Ÿ”ฅ and ride trail or explore the back country  ๐Ÿšต before black flies are out in mass, ๐ŸฆŸ but only if the weather ain’t shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ I kind of want to wait until things green up  ๐ŸŒฑ before heading out to Schoharie County to camp, and eat fresh ramps I found in the woods, and ride the Catskill Scenic Trail from Stamford to Bloomville ๐Ÿšต‍โ™‚๏ธ and back again, enjoying the colors of spring and the smell of all that freshly turned dirt.๐Ÿšœ Maybe that will be Mother’s Day Weekend.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Latest Sunset ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

Red, White, and Blue

Do you believe in magic? With today’s weather it will feel almost magical ๐ŸŒž

At least when we see the sun later on this morning. Going to be a nice, spring like day once the clouds part. Or so I hope. My shoulder is still sore and achy, like from the Lyme I got years ago now, but I am fine. I feel a lot better now that I got my initial ideas sketched out for my off-grid property and cabin, even if it’s just a sketch and years worth of work ahead. I certainly like it much better then suburbanite, high consumption crap covered with vinyl-siding that dominates the real estate classifieds.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Mostly cloudy and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear around 10 am.

I ended up opening the windows after heading to bed, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿš’ after I burned something on the kitchen stove cooking and it inevitably set off the fire alarm. ๐Ÿ””  It was actually nice sleeping with the fresh air, and I am feeling a lot better the past few days, thought still a bit achy. I think it also helped that I started to draft out what I really want when I own my own land and build my house, and the reassurance from others that it’s possible. It feels good to know I don’t have to be stuck in surburbia forever, and that the only option isn’t vinyl siding and drywall with a big natural gas boiler and a 3,000 square foot home full of things soon to be garbage with a big mowed grass lawn. ๐Ÿคฎ It is possible to build that off-grid cabin I really want for a budget I can afford. And on that note, ๐Ÿ˜ด suddenly I am sleeping better.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 55 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. Maximum dew point of 47 at 12pm. North wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2002. 10.9 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

On the list for today is buying the poster frames, ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ for the artwork to decorate my new office. Along with a brighter light bulb for the desk, maybe a candle warmer, and groceries for the week. ๐Ÿ›’ My pantry is well depleted, I really need to get shopping. ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ‡ Amazing how fast food comes and gets eaten around this place. I think I must have a very big appetite, but some of it is lower calorie value of the food I eat so I end up eating more, especially after ride back and forth to work on my bicycle. โ™ป๏ธ I also need to return cans to get my deposit back and free up some space in the outside trash can.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.8° from the due south horizon (-30° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:10 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (262°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:48 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:16 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:49 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

In the afternoon going out to see the family ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ง and then over to my friend’s from Boy Scouts, to spend some time together, and learn what I can learn about how he put together his homestead outside of Greenville, rebuilding an old and vacant home. Now I’m thinking about building new, ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ but I want to gain whatever insight I can in my options and what contractors he worked with the process with the town building inspector. ๐Ÿงญ The more I can learn about the process, the fewer costly mistakes I will likely make, or so I hope. For me, it’s so much about the money but living the life I want to live. ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐Ÿฅพ๐Ÿท๐Ÿ”

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ, with a low of 40 degrees at 5am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 22nd. North wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1950. I can leave my windows open again tonight! ๐Ÿ”ณ That’s great. I sleep so much better with fresh air.

Back in 1972, an airplane crashes in suburban Albany, off Holmesdale Ave in Albany (near Colvin Avenue and Washington Ave). Regional Carrier, Mohawk Airlines Flight 405 crashes as a result of a control malfunction and insufficient training in emergency procedures. ๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ  Also today in 1873, U.S. Congress enacts the Comstock Law, making it illegal to send any “obscene, lewd, or lascivious” books through the mail. ๐Ÿ“˜ ๐Ÿ“ฌ๏ธ And in 1991, an amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ‍โ™€๏ธ

Looking ahead, next Sunday is Daylight Savings Time ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 6:57 pm with dusk at 7:24 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy skies with snow showers and temperatures between 44 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 1977. Before my time.

Sugar Loaf and Drowned Lands

Places I Camped in 2023

While this year was a rainy one, and it rained during many of my trips, I was able to get out for 53 nights in the wilderness — mostly fairly close to home but I also did a trip down to West Virginia in late October with several trips to the Adirondacks, Central New York and summer vacation in the Finger Lakes.

Places I Camped in 2023

Martin Luther Kings Day โ€“ January 14-16 (2 nights)

To start out my camping adventures in 2023, I drove out to Charles Baker State Forest and Brookfield Horse Camp. There wasn’t a lot of snow — just a dusting but it was a fun weekend, topped off by a beautiful sun-full glittery hike up Tassell Hill after a hoar frost. Explored Lost Pond and several of the trails in the middle of state forest.

Home for the weekend

40th Birthday โ€“ January 27-29 (2 nights)

For my fortieth birthday, I took off the Friday leading up to my 40th birthday to cross country ski and winter camp at Rensselaerville State Forest. It was a beautiful weekend with lots of blue skies, sufficient snow for skiing but not so much that was a ton of snowmobiles out on the trails.

Beautiful Day of Skiing

Presidents Day โ€“ February 17-19 (2 nights)

I decided for Presidents Day Weekend to do another trip out to Charles Baker State Forest and Brookfield Horse Camp. Slightly more snow then last time but again largely a snow-less winter, with some nice days for hikes through the various truck and horse trails. I hiked around much of state forest, especially the more southern part of the forest.

Evening on Truck Trail 13

Easter Weekend โ€“ April 7-9 (2 nights)

On Good Friday through Easter I camped at at Rensselaerville State Forest. The snow was gone and it was fairly mild though at times it was a bit cool. Spent a fair amount of time walking around and exploring the new OSI Parcel that has been recently added to state forest and is still largely open fields with sweeping views of the Catskill Mountains.

Hillcross Farm Pond

Duck Pond Trip โ€“ May 5-7 (2 nights)

The first Friday in May I took a half day from work and headed out to Schoharie County to camp at Duck Pond at Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest. Originally the plan was to camp two nights at Duck Pond, hiking along the Long Path and exploring the state forest and then on Sunday hiking the Catskill Scenic Trail. That part of the trip changed when driving along Duck Pond Road the low tire pressure light came on I found a pallet nail in my truck tire. I was able to top off the truck tire and then change the tire when I got home and got the nail pulled and plugged. But it wasn’t the best way ever to end a trip early.

Spring

Overnight at Cole Hill – May 13-14 (1 night)

After visiting the folks on Mother’s Day Weekend, I decided to do a quick overnight hammock camp on Cole Hill State Forest in Berne. Nothing fancy or formal, it was as much a way to test out sleeping in my hammock with the bug screen. Kind of a chilly night, I took camp down fairly and headed home early in the morning.

Hammock Camping on Cole Hill

Memorial Day Weekend at Cole Hill โ€“ May 20-22 (2 nights)

This year I decided to eschew the Adirondacks and Greene Mountains for Memorial Day Weekend due to the black flies, my desire to look at bicycles, and work I had to do on the Saturday morning leading up to the holiday weekend. I decided to hammock camp again Cole Hill State Forest in Berne. This was a three-day two night trip, so it it gave me a chance to bring more gear up the mountain, set up a more formal camp. Cooked on the fire, hiked around the forest. It was a warm weekend, but I enjoy the solitude, along with having good cell service for listening to podcasts and watching videos.

Cooking down dinner

Juneteenth Weekend on Piseco-Powley โ€“ June 15-20 (4 nights)

To kick off summer, I did my usual Juneteenth weekend camping trip, tacking on some days on the Juneteenth Holiday Weekend. It was a bit of a cool and rainy weekend to kick off summer, one that would actually be followed by many cool and rainy weekends where I would stay home. Camped at House Pond for the first three nights, spending time down floating in the tube on East Branch while the final night I camped up at Powley Bridge site and kayaked along the East Branch. Really, like often is the case, the best weather was the day I took down camp.

Evening on East Canada Creek

Catskill Scenic Trail Trip โ€“ July 22-24 (3 nights)

After several months of researching and visiting various bike shops, I finally got a mountain bike. I decided it would be fun to do as much of the Catskill Scenic Trail as I could before my summer vacation got underway. Actually did quite a bit of riding and hiking that weekend — started out hiking Pratts Rock’s then riding from Grand George to Hobart. Sunday, I rode from Fultonham to Middleburgh on NY 30, doing a quick climb up Vromans Nose, then stopping at the farm market then going to Mine Kill State Park to swim. Monday I rode from Hobart down to Bloomville, getting caught in a major thunderstorm and downpour a few miles north of Bloomville with no shelter in sight. The trail became super boggy, then I went to Mine Kill State Park for one more swim, and then out to folks house for Sunday dinner a day later then usual.

After the rain showers

Finger Lakes National Forest โ€“ July 28 โ€“ August 6 (9 nights)

Every year for nearly a decade and a half I’ve been doing summer vacation out in the Finger Lakes — camping in the National Forest and exploring as much as possible during my days there. The past few years I’ve been driving there on a Friday, to get a better campsite before they’re taken by the weekend campers. This year was no exception. With Blackie, my mountain bike, I did nearly all of the bike trails in the near vicinity, from the Black Diamond Trail to the Cayuta Valley Trail to Dresden – Penn Yan Canal Trail. Kayaked on both Cayuga and Scenic Lakes, swam many days at Watkins Glen State Park and Taughannock State Park, explored the Cornell Campus and Botanical Gardens on my bike. Got some good ice cream at the Spotted Duck, explored the Geneva Waterfront along with the Cayuga-Seneca Canalway. Some rain but compared to the wet summer that was, this was a pretty good week.

Morning on Searsburg Road

Piseco-Powley โ€“ House Pond Campsite โ€“ August 18-20 (3 nights)

The next few weeks for rainy and by the time I got away for one more long weekend, it promised to be fairly nice weekend but turned out to be fairly cool and cloudy with some rain. Back at the House Pond Campsite, did some swimming in East Branch, but with the mercury in the 60s most of the weekend, I didn’t spend a lot of time in the water. Hardly what I had dreamed when the I planned the weekend. Rode Blackie up to Goldmine Stream Falls and relaxed down by the falls for a bit, also sat down by the swimming hole off of the Old Edick Road Snowmobile Trail, watching the rain fall, bemoaning the wet and cold weather. Still it was good to get away for a bit, and I did do a fair amount of reading in hammock, under the protection of the bug net, as the bugs were bad after such a wet summer.

Gentle Drop Into A Golden Pool

Labor Day at Perkins Clearing – September 1-4 (3 nights)

I took the Friday off before Labor Day to get a jump on the holiday season travel, and set up camp at the site I really enjoy up at Perkins Clearing overlooking the mountains. Did a fair amount of riding along the various dirt roads of Perkins Clearing, including over to Mason Lake and on Sunday rode most of the way to the Spruce Lake Trailhead, though didn’t make it there in time as I got a bit of a late start as I spent the balance of the day reading and swimming in the Jessup River Bridge swimming hole. Labor Day, I rode around the Spectulator Tree Farm, doing a large loop, through the tree farm, past the north end of Elm Lake, then down to Austin Falls and Old Route 8B. I had hoped to get ice cream, but by the time I got to the ice cream shop they were out of soft-ice cream, and there was a long line. Summer was dragging to a close.

Kunjamunk River from Long Level Bridge

September Trip to Rensselearville State Forest โ€“ September 15-17 (2 nights)

With time being fairly tight and the weather only so-so I decided to do a two night trip close to home out in Rennselearville to ride some of the gravel trails, explore the OSI Parcel further and just enjoy an early autumn weekend camping.

Evening

Columbus Day at Rensselearville State Forest โ€“ October 8-9 (1 night)

Columbus Day Weekend was cold and rainy for the first half of the weekend, but the Sunday heading into Columbus Day was nice, so I decided to head out to Rensselaerville for a quick overnight at the campsite on CCC Road. Leaves were late this year, so not a lot of color, but it still was nice to get away for a night and ride some of the trails around.

Leonard Hill

West Virginia Trip โ€“ October 21-29 (8 nights)

The banner trip of the year was my trip down to West Virigina. While it started and ended in rain, it was a very enjoyable trip with lots of new adventures this year. Camped the balance of the week — 6 nights in Canaan Heights — doing day trips from that area. Overnighted one night driving down at County Bridge Campground in Pennsylvania, and a on the way back camped overnight at Long Pond State Forest in New York. Adventures in West Virginia included hiking at Dolly Sods, mountain biking at night in the sods of Canaan Heights, riding up and hiking to Table Rock, exploring Blackwater Falls State Park on the mountain bike, MonPower Mountain Bike Park, Thomas Rail Grade and the Olson Firetower. Rode part of the Great Allegheny Trail through the Cumberland Passage, and the two sections of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canalway, including the Paw Paw Tunnel.

Sunrise

Stoney Pond โ€“ November 4-7 (3 nights)

A little over a week back from West Virginia, I headed out to Madison County to ride the Tassel Hill Mountain Bike Trails at Alfred Woodford, the Chenango Canal Trail in Hamilton and Erie Canalway from Chittenango to Green Lakes State Park and then to Canastota and Wampsville. The first night was cold at Stoney Pond but the subsequent nights were quite pleasant and mild.

Old Canal Warehouse in Chittenango [Expires November 19 2023]

Prospect Mountain – East Branch Sacanadaga โ€“ Buttermilk Falls/Hudson Special Management Area โ€“ November 24-28 (3 nights)

Strangely enough, I had never been up Prospect Mountain. So I decided the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) to hike up Prospect Mountain, and then spend the next two nights camping on East Branch of the Sacandaga River. The Saturday and Sunday was fairly cold, so I ended up spending the bulk of day hanging around camp, doing a bit of hiking around Fox Lair. Sunday, evening around 8 PM it started to sleet, then snow, then rain, Monday morning, it turned into a white globby snow, and I ended up taking down camp fairly early after discovering I was out of propane and then spent much of the day exploring the Hudson River Special Management Area – Buttermilk Falls.

Icy River Road

Stoney Pond – Charles Baker โ€“ December 21-26 (5 nights)

On the days leading up to Christmas I decided to take a second trip to Madison County. I was originally planning to camp two nights at Stoney Pond then two nights at the Charles Baker Horse Camp but my family’s holiday plans were cancelled due to illness in my family, so I ended up staying an extra night at the horse camp, through the day after Christmas. On Friday, I rode the Erie Canalway from Canastota to East Verona, nearly to Rome. On Christmas Day I rode around many of truck trails at Charles Baker with my mountain bike, leaving my face splattered with mud. Many of the days were fairly cold and cloudy, but that’s too be expected in late December. Still it was a special way to spend Christmas.

Camp on this cold but still morning ?

With the year drawing to a close in a week …

I think it’s been a good year.

As they say, years don’t matter much but decades matter much more. Last year I didn’t think was a real good year, not terrible but also not great. The markets crapped out the second half of 2022, leaving me feeling less enthusiastic with my progress on saving and growing my wealth, getting closer to my future goals. While I learned a fair bit in 2022, everything seemed like a bit of a step down from 2021, with remote work done and the year taken up a lot of work.

But with 2023 coming a close, I think my 40th year of my life has been a much better one.

For one, starting next year I start my exciting new career as Director of Data Services. It’s significantly more pay, at least when you look at the round number in mind, though it’s not really that much more with inflation. That means more savings. But this past year as also been one of a lot of learning, and personal growth. I have lost a lot of weight, while my investments have swelled with a strong stock market, even while the bond investments slackened and CD and savings struggled to keep up with the rolling inflation. Gas prices were down, my truck was running well, so I had a delightful summer vacation in the Finger Lakes and a great trip to West Virginia, along with many smaller but wonderful trips like the one I’m currently on out in Madison County, along with other trips this summer and autumn to the Adirondacks and Central New York. Caring about my health and eating good quality foods really improved not just my waist line but also my physical and mental health — my doctor’s check up showed me in a good health, despite occasionally peeing and pooping a lot due to my newly found water and fiber-rich healthy eating habits.

I am hoping next year will also be a great one. I’ll do my best.

Why Early to Bed, Early to Rise ๐Ÿ› ๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿป ๐ŸŒ„

Lately I’ve been getting up at around 5 AM each morning, and I don’t even use an alarm clock. โฐ Actually that’s not totally true, I set my alarm clock for 5:50 AM but I rarely have it go off while I am still in bed. This time of year it’s dark at that hour, but it turns out waking that early becomes quite natural as I go to bed at or before 9 PM most nights, and by five o’clock I need to run downstairs to the bathroom, and it’s an opportunity to start getting meals cooked for day, and a nutritious and delicious breakfast prior to going out for the morning walk. I find the early bedtime improves my sleep, makes me feel much better and have a much better day.

Four in the morning
I woke up from out of my dreams
Nowhere to go but back to sleep
But Iโ€™m reconciled
Oh, oh, oh, Iโ€™m gonna be up for a while

More reasons for going to bed early and rising early

  1. Improved Sleep Quality: Going to bed early can help ensure you get enough hours of sleep, which is essential for physical and mental health. High-quality sleep is associated with better mood, cognitive function, and overall well-being.
  2. Circadian Rhythm Alignment: Our bodies have a natural circadian rhythm that aligns with the day-night cycle. Going to bed and waking up early helps align your internal clock with external cues, which can enhance your sleep quality and overall health.
  3. Increased Productivity: Many people find that they are most productive in the morning when their minds are fresh and free from distractions. By waking up early, you can make the most of these productive hours.
  4. Establishing a Routine: Consistency is key to a healthy lifestyle. Going to bed and waking up at the same times each day helps establish a routine, which can have positive effects on your overall health and well-being.
  5. More Daylight Exposure: Waking up early gives you more exposure to natural daylight, which has been linked to improved mood, increased vitamin D production, and better sleep.
  6. Quiet and Peaceful Mornings: Early mornings are often quieter and more peaceful, providing a great opportunity for introspection, meditation, or simply enjoying a moment of solitude before the day’s responsibilities begin.
  7. Time for Exercise: Early mornings are a great time for physical activity. Regular exercise has numerous health benefits, and getting it done early can boost your metabolism and energy levels throughout the day.
  8. Better Mental Health: Adequate sleep and a regular schedule can contribute to better mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and the risk of mood disorders.
  9. Healthy Eating Habits: People who wake up early tend to have better eating habits. They are more likely to eat a nutritious breakfast, which can set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
  10. Improved Time Management: Starting your day early gives you a head start and more time to plan and manage your tasks and responsibilities, reducing the likelihood of feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Almost bed time

A cloudy and dark Tuesday for rounding out August โ˜๏ธ

Listening to Rich Men North of Richmond as I’m out for the morning walk, living in the new world with and old soul. A big pot of brown rice, red and green lentils are cooking down for the week – already had my first cup of coffee and looking forward to cream of wheat with chia seeds, yogurt and frozen fruit.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Dark and gray and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ But when there is no hope, there is help – see today’s forecast in the third paragraph. It’s already clearing to the east. There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees.

I was hoping to ride home last night ๐Ÿšฒ but when I started down Madison it started raining โ˜” and I ran over to Broadway in front of the old Union Train Station and put my bicycle on the bus ๐Ÿš and rode home. I should remember that is always an option and riding even one way still burns calories and saves money ๐Ÿ’ต. Bike rides secure but bounces a lot on some of the bumps. Heck of it is was just a light drizzle I’d probably had been fine to ride home but whatever – my left eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ was kind of irritated at any rate.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Going to be sweating a bit on the ride out of Norman’s Kill. Maybe not a good day for making those spinach pizza things I’ve been thinking about cooking this afternoon. It will depend how hot and sweaty I am when I get home and if I want to ride out to Voorheesville in twilight of the day. Maybe tomorrow with the rain. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 91 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 2018.

Wearing my glasses into work today ๐Ÿ‘“ so I can totally have the four-eyes are better then two eyes look today. I don’t l like my limited view from the glasses, but I also don’t want to do any more damage to my sore eyes. I am hopeful by mid-day and evening commute I can be back to contacts. Then assuming the weather doesn’t crap out, it will be back down the Madison Street Hill, and then to Albany County Rail Trail making the climb ๐Ÿ˜… up through the Normans Kill George ๐Ÿšฒ to home.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.8° from the due south horizon (-14° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:59 pm with the sun in the west (277°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (284°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:37 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:04 pm, which is one minute and 40 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Blue ๐ŸŒ Moon in the southeast (124°) at an altitude of 7° from the horizon, 226,316 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:42 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 13 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over today.

Went to bed ๐Ÿ› early around 7:45 and I was asleep by eight. My left eye ๐Ÿ‘๏ธwas very irritated as I forgot my contact solution when I went out to my parents house yesterday overnight and by afternoon it was a mess. Kind of a dark and rainy evening โ˜” and because I get up so early it’s hard for me to stay up late. Had a great dinner of tofu – zucchini parmesan with the sauce made from delicious paste tomatoes that I got from my parents house. ๐Ÿ… Dessert was opening up that cantaloupe that I got at the store ๐Ÿˆ on Sunday. Good stuff.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 66 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1982.

Yesterday, I got a call from a friend who was a nurse ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ in her younger years, concerned about all my recent weight loss. Apparently a lot of people have been talking about how much thinner I’ve gotten, concerned that I’m not eating enough. ๐Ÿ“ฉ She sent me an article about the dangers of loosing weight too quickly, with fatty liver disease and other things that can happen if your crashing with your calorie intake. But truth be told, But the thing is when you don’t eat a lot of processed foods and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, ๐Ÿ it’s hard to eat excessively and keep pounds on. ๐ŸคฐTrust me, I’m often very stuffed after eating and keep filling my mouth throughout the day with quality food. I don’t just eat 3 times a day, but non-stop from morning to night.

The heck of it is despite all my weight loss, I am eating more then ever and spending more on food. ๐Ÿ’ธ  Some of it’s inflation but also I’ve been trying to expand my pantry and keeping healthy eating interesting, with new and different foods every week. At first I was very picky about what should be in my diet ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ” but now I focus more on overall, doing a lot more home cooking with quality ingredients and very little sugar, saturated fats, and a reasonable amount of carbs. And lots of fruits and vegetables, consistent with Harvard guidelines for such things. ๐Ÿฝ That said, I am surprised how much I’ve lost even since May. The 36×32 jeans I bought this weekend which I was afraid would be too tight, where almost too loose, almost necessitating a drop to 34. Figuring a year ago was I was primarily wearing 40 inch jeans, and even at times some of them were a bit tight, I’ve become so much thinner and healthier. I think it’s doing the stairs at work and lately bicycling to work. It’s not the limiting the plate size for sure.

I did do that physical back in late May, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍โš•๏ธ I’ve thought about reaching out to my Health Insurance’s nurses line to see if they have any advice on my recent weight loss. I am not concerned as I think it’s just I”m burning more calories then I’m taking in โš– but folks still seem to be very concerned. I am hearing that from a lot of people. Maybe I should see if my insurance covers the visiting of a dietitian to help me better understand my food choices, and come up with a better balanced meals, though I think my food choices are basically the consensus of what most of the health experts are saying, ๐Ÿฅ‘ and I’m NOT under in-taking healthy fats or proteins — or have some kind of undiagnosed disease. It’s not just that one nurse friend either, it’s relatives, co-workers and others.

On this day in 1966, the Beatles perform their last concert before paying fans ๐ŸŽธ at Candlestick Park in a wicked thunderstorm โ›ˆ San Francisco. After this, if you wanted to hear the Beatles, you had to listen to them on vinyl records or AM radio. ๐Ÿ“ป Their next album would be Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Club Heart band, and it would have a dramatically different sound then the Love, Love Me Do records. ๐ŸŽถ

I have Labor Day Weekend Off ๐Ÿ• including the Friday before so I can go up to camp bright and early. I probably will do like I did two week ago — pack Thursday night — leave very early, maybe before seven, get gas in Rotterdam, โ›ฝ then stop at Samdil Farm for sweet corn and vegetables and maybe meat, ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿฅฉ Walmart for supplies ๐Ÿ›’ and then try to make Speculator as close to 9 AM as possible to get the campsite I want and get set up. Then hang out for a bit, have lunch, then maybe mountain bike ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ in the afternoon and do some fishing. ๐ŸŽฃ Maybe kayak Indian Lake on Saturday, if not to choppy. ๐Ÿ›ถ Saturday evening I might do an after-dark hike up Watch Hill to spot fire towers lit for the firetower light-the-night event. ๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿ”ฆ Later in the weekend, probably Sunday or Labor Day I’ll have to go back down to Spectulator for some swimming. ๐ŸŠ. Should be a wonderful weekend, especially with some fresh-locally sourced steak and shrimp. And so much delicious sweet corn and other good things to eat.

A picture perfect Labor Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Friday, sunny high around 75 with a maximum dew point of 57 come 7 pm. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 61 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 65 at 1pm. Labor Day is going to warm, may hit 87 degrees with lots of sun. I’ll be on the kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ on Lake Pleasant. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. Won’t be quite as warm up north.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ when the sun will be setting at 5:51 pm with dusk at 6:19 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 64 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 2019. Been interested in making some baked pumpkin dishes, come the autumn. Plus pumpkins are a lot of fun to shoot with the ol .22 rifle up in the woods.

We end June lost in the smoke ๐ŸŒซ

Probably by tomorrow or the day after the air pollution will move on, my eyes and throat will stop burning. At least for a while. The hell of it is we are electrifying things and switching to renewables which will clean the air about the time climate change is polluting the air.

Good morning! Where did June go? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, or at least is lost in the smoke. I’m getting used to the sore throat when I go outside. It’s kind of like after a hard night drinking and smoking back in the day minus the hang over. Haze and smoke ๐ŸŒซ and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 59 degrees. The air quality index is 114, unhealthy for sensitive individuals due to Cannuks burning their forests. I’m sure the Trumpster would say that.

Lately I’ve been starting my morning with a hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš and a cup of black coffee โ˜• before my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ. I appreciating the power of protein in eggs to get me going in the morning. 11 ยฝ miles walked yesterday. 36 floors climbed up and down. I’m really getting to prefer the stairs to the elevator at work. I got to bed ๐Ÿ› before nine o’clock last night and got a good night’s sleep and feel great. After the morning walk it’s pancakes ๐Ÿฅž and strawberries, the pancakes made out of bananas ๐ŸŒ, whole grain oatmeal and water run through the food processor. It’s good.

You’d think you’d need flour and sugar to make good pancakes ๐Ÿฅž but truth be told, since I’ve been milling the whole grain oatmeal and bananas into a slurry in the food processor to make pancake mix I can’t imagine going back as it’s so much better tasting and filling. I’ve been thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ maybe I can tweak the recipe adding raisins and possibly honey ๐Ÿฏ for more stickiness to make oatmeal raisin cookies in the oven minus all unhealthy crap. ๐Ÿช

Today will be widespread haze. Patchy dense fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒ‡, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. It would be hotter if not for the smoke. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1964.

Yesterday I was noticing how thin I actually look when wearing clothes at actually for myself. ๐Ÿ It’s actually amazing what eating good food plus a little exercise can do. I wonder if I’m actually a healthy weight but I don’t know, I don’t own a scale. Now just to figure out the bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ thing and start riding to work, saving bus fares ๐Ÿš and getting more exercise doing what is otherwise wasted time on the bus.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 6 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the south-southeast (160ยฐ) at an altitude of 20ยฐ from the horizon, 234,231 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 35 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8pm. South wind around 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1978.

On this day in 1971, Ohio ratifies the 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, reducing the voting age to 18, thereby putting the amendment into effect. Also in 1934, ๐Ÿ—ณ The Night of the Long Knives, Adolf Hitler’s violent purge of his political rivals in Germany, takes place. Fortunately, we only have obnoxious rhetoric to that impact in our country today. ๐Ÿ—ก That said, I like my big knifes for chopping vegetables. ๐Ÿฅ•

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny โ˜€ ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 85 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 95 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1913.

Tomorrow’s goals are quite simple but important steps forward. ๐Ÿฅ… It is to first and foremost either get a bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ or at least have one ordered and paid for at a bicycle store either new or preferably used. Something good and reliable. Drop off my worn out clothes and boots ๐Ÿ‘ข for recycling โ™ป. Get sparklers ๐ŸŽ‡ and ground fireworks either in Greene or Rennselear County. Go grocery shopping ๐Ÿ›’ for a few supplies. Decide if I want to go out to Schoharie for camping ๐Ÿ• Saturday evening through independence Day. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers before 11am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 11am and 2pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, ๐ŸŒฅ with a high near 80. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 69 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

Frankly, Sunday doesn’t look great. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ I am inclined to stay in town, maybe get some books at the library ๐Ÿ“š as I’m not crazy about the books I have remaining tonight. But WRGB keeps swearing this weekend won’t be a wash out ๐Ÿ“บ but based on statistical analysis of Nate Silver ๐Ÿ”ข I’m not sure I believe television metrologist over the National Weather Service. But I will keep Schoharie County in my back pocket, for a potential trip with Monday spent fishing ๐ŸŽฃ and swimming at Mine Kill Pool and camping at Burnt Rossman State Forest, hitting up farm stands ๐Ÿ“ on Saturday afternoon.

For Monday a chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 60%. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Doesn’t sound wonderful. And Independence Day, ๐ŸŽ‡ hot and very humid with a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 85. โ˜€ Dewpoints pushing seventy. Sticky. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Maybe independence Day I’ll head to an undisclosed location with a flashlight ๐Ÿ”ฆ to watch July 4th fireworks. ๐ŸŽ‡ And then save the sparklers ๐ŸŒŸ and ground fireworks I get for the following weekend potentially for a trip to the Potholers spent floating on the tube โญ•. Assuming it’s hot and sunny. Or a future ๐Ÿ”ฎ July weekend. I’m planning the last two weekends of July at Finger Lakes National Forest where fireworks are mostly prohibited so I don’t think I’ll bring many there. I actually kind of want sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ to be out first so I can enjoy that with clams ๐Ÿฆช at the Potholers though.

Looking forward, there are 2 weeks until National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. What can I say, skinny dipping is fun especially after dark in an Adirondack swimming ๐ŸŠ hole. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.
