Good evening! Partly cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar for the evening walk. 🌃 There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The moon 🎑 is rising on this starry evening. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 1 pm. 🌡️Cold by recent standards.

Today was everything I expected it to be. 💼 Busy for a while then quiet during the Governor’s speech. I thought it ordinary for the times we live in. Still ambitious climate change plans, it will be fascinating how it all works out. Went to a public hearing on yet another development proposed in the Albany Pine Bush. 🌲 it was everything you expected, the decision was made in advance. I get tired of being such a looser all the time but if nobody objects nobody will listen. Rushing out to the bus I left my headphones on my desk at home. 🎧 I normally swap between two sets so one is always charged, but I managed with the set I had at my desk.

This evening I’m feeling chilled ❄. I think we stood outside talking too long after that meeting and my suit and tie isn’t that warm even with the wool overcoat. But I was cold after I got on the bus 🚍 and when I got home. I know the COVID has been going around Albany, hopefully I don’t have it. I’ve been wearing my muzzle and I’m boosted but I had that work holiday party 🎉 and mom’s birthday after that. I’ll have hot coca ☕ and hop under the heated blanket when I get home from the walk.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌃 with a low of 19 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. North wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 3 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous 🌖 Moon with 85% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:03 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:25 am in the east-southeast (120°) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:10 am with sun in the southeast (128°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 39 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have increasing clouds ☁, with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 17 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 2020. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1922.❄ Before my time.

After work tomorrow I’ll drive down to the laundromat. 👕 That way I’ll have the clothes I will need for the coming week and weekend. Then be set maybe for next too as I wear different clothes for session days then ordinary days.

The weekend forecast keeps improving ☀ though it’s going to be seasonably cold. But I’m excited about the chance to get out of town for the long weekend. I often feel so trapped in the winter. ❄

In four weeks on February 7 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (250°) at 5:17 pm,🌄 which is 34 minutes and 57 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 26 and 10 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 16 degrees. The record high of 48 degrees was set back in 2005.

Looking ahead, Clean Your Computer Day 🧹 is a month away, Valentines Day ❤️ is in 5 weeks, Average High is 40 ☀️ is in 7 weeks, First Day of Spring 💮 is in 10 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 11 weeks, 8 PM Dusk 🌆 is in 3 months, Average High is 70 🐮 is in 4 months, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 23 weeks, Independence Day 🇺🇸 is in 25 weeks, World Population Day 👩‍👩‍👧‍👧 is in 26 weeks, August 🌻 is in 29 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise 🌇 is in 8 months, Halloween 🎃 is in 42 weeks, Average High is 50 🍂 is in 44 weeks, Election Day 🗳️ is in 44 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍺 is in 47 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise ⌛️ is in 11 months and Boxing Day 🥊 is in 50 weeks.

Did you see ten weeks until calendar spring? 🌷 I know that they were talking about the compressed budget schedule this year with the new governor, at least on paper. April will be here before you know it though calendar 🗓 spring comes about a week quicker. I am still expecting colder winter weather to eventually arrive though come February.

January 10, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Cloudy with snow flurries and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 5 pm. ☃️

It is State of the State Day in Albany, 👩🏽‍💼 the day of the year I always take the local to work to avoid the traffic and get off the bus five feet from the door of my office and head straight upstairs to avoid the protestor half of which probably have the COVID, which the politicians don’t talk about anymore.

Today will have patchy rain and snow showers before 9am. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 14th. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 2016. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 1984.❄

The Rhinne Trap caught one mouse 🐭 though somehow I was hoping to catch more in one night. Somehow I find it hard to believe there is only one mouse. I know how this shit goes. But I didn’t hear any this morning. Easy enough I dumped it out with the water 💦 outside. Seems wasteful with the water, I might try next time to fish out the mouse rather than dump the full bucket. Or may put less water in the bucket. I know some people use anti-freeze and similar substance so the water doesn’t get nasty if you don’t get rid of the mouse right away, but I’m not really into dumping anti-freeze in the woods, even if I’m no greeny. 💚

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.4° from the due south horizon (-45.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:41 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 5:12 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:48 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 21 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 22 seconds over today.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 17 degrees at 6am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 11th. North wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 3 degrees. The record low of -25 occurred back in 1968.

Been working on FreeCodeCamp again. 🤖 I was a bit tired of some of the classes for a while, but I am deep into the D3 module again. I probably should try to make more time to do it and go back and finish the data libraries class projects but I don’t really like it much.

Seems like the holiday weekend is improving. 🌨️😃 I am more worried about snow and ice on Saturday heading out then anything else during the weekend. Saturday, a decreasing chance of rain before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 35. For the King’s Day, sunny heading up to forty. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees.

As it stands it would be a good weekend to head out of town. ⛺ Where exactly to go is up in the air, the lack of snow opens up some various options. Might be muddy or icy in the higher elevations though. I still like the idear of Madison County, and hiking around the various roads of the Horse Camp on the weekend with binoculars and probably microspikes, but I am still worried about the roads being icy driving out there. I could do NY 8 again, or maybe Rensselearville State Forest, but I’m kind of bored with camping there, and I might be back out there for Presidents Weekend. I want some good snow, to ski and winter camp again. Another option, is that campsite at Burnt-Rossman that isn’t far off the road, but my only concern with that is I prefer to have cell service, as it makes the long nights go by faster, especially as my portable radio is broken as I usually just stream radio programs.

One month 📅 from now will be Clean Your Computer Day 🧹 when the sun will be setting at 5:21 pm with dusk at 5:49 pm. By then, things will be warming up a bit with average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. Although that’s still cooler then it’s been lately. I still think the hot weather will break down before too long.

January 7, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. 🍃. It got cold out once again with the wind though needless to say it’s more like early March than January.

Moms 75th birthday party was fun 🎂 we had it at a Mexican restaurant in Saratoga. I find it hard to believe my mom is 75 and I’m going on forty in a few weeks, though my focus is entirely on Mission Fifty. I don’t think she appreciated when I pointed out at this point I was more focused on my fiftieth birthday than 40. But time goes by so quickly as an adult 👨🏻‍💼. Been five years already since I’ve been too old to be a Young Democrat. Where does time go? It’s always nice to spend time with mom. 🤶 Never know if I’ll be able to join her for her 80th. Time is precious as it compounds.

But the more I think about it, the more Mission Fifty becomes what I think 🤔 about. Older people keep telling me I’m rushing my life and wasting time ⏳ but I’m really excited to think about where I could be in ten years if I maintain and build on my progress. While I’ve long known about the power of maintenance of effort, dividends and compounding – the brushing up on financial literacy textbooks and video – really reminds me how important it is in all parts of life from health to work skills to knowledge. Don’t overextend yourself and don’t sweat a down day but know things add up over a decade. I keep telling myself that this is the decade that will define so much of my remaining years and I should work every day to build 🏗️ towards Mission Fifty in all parts of my life.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 23 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 5th. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1878.

Begrudgingly the heats back on and my thermostat is turned up to 50. Had to do it with freezing weather expected ♨ and the inside temperature dropping into the forties. The main reason for heat inside in my view is to keep the pipes from freezing. I kind of admire those who live without running water in their households as they don’t have to waste so much energy on heat especially when they’re not home. I really hate modern life, I look forward to the day I can live a simpler life.

Tonight will have a Full 🌝 Moon with 98% illuminated. At 7 PM, the moon was in the east-northeast (71°) at an altitude of 17° from the horizon, some 252,270 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by July 18th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Wolf 🐺 Moon is on Monday, January 23. The darkest hour is at 12:02 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (120°) and last for 3 minutes and 22 seconds. Sunrise is 8 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:11 am with sun in the southeast (128°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 43 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 11 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 21st. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the morning. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 2008. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1923.❄

In four weeks on February 4 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (249°) at 5:13 pm,🌄 which is 34 minutes and 9 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 37 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 15 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1991.

January 2, 2023 Morning

Good morning! It’s the first Monday of the New Year. As New Years Day occurred on a Sunday, this would be a holiday. It’s good because it’s a cloudy and I’m bad at getting off my ass, and I did not get out walking at 6:45 AM when it was still pitch black out. But later on it will clear out and we will have weather that will be resembling the first day of spring, until it no longer feels like that later in the week. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 11 pm. ☃️ But even after that, it won’t feel like January for a while until eventually it does. I figure it will feel like a deep frozen hell by the time my 40th birthday rolls around, and I’ll once again be trying to stay warm under the heated blanket.

Mostly cloudy and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. One week to Static Electric day, but with warm, damp conditions, I don’t expect much of a need for a static discharge strip around your arm anytime soon. 🤯 I am not prepared to be shocked anytime soon unless I touch a 120 volt line in all the rain we are expected to get mid-week. At least shit won’t dry out, so if I head out for the King’s weekend and have a big ass fire, 🔥 to make up for staying home over New Years Eve like a lame and poor duck, I won’t have to worry about burning down the woods.

Out for the morning walk 🚶 at Elm Ave Park and then I will take a shower 🚿 and then do a quick hike up Bennett Hill and then out to the folks house 🏡 for New Years Fondue 🫕 the wonderful tradition invented by dairymen who raise those Big Brown Swiss 🇨🇭🐄 to sell more cheese 🧀 in the dairy boom of the 1970s while input prices were rising and Americans wanted cheaper food during an era of inflation. But dipping bread and salty cocktail frank’s in melted dairy fat and wine is so good. I haven’t showered since Friday morning before work so I’m do for a good scrub.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 48 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 22nd. I believe that is called spring, which appears for now to be coming early, but I don’t think we can stick a fork in winter yet. ⛄ But who knows about skiing on Martin Luther’s birthday weekend. Always so cold, but maybe not this year. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mist in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

Today got to boil my muzzles 😷 and then hang them to dry. I find boiling them with soapy water 💦 helps to get them clean and tightens up the fabric to keep the COVID away. I got the latest and greatest COVID boosters and flu shots but I hate doctors 🏥 and have zero interest in getting sick. Now if they could only bring back work from home 🏡 though I’m not sure I’d want to pay for the extra heat and electricity in these inflationary times.

They’re back in town this week 👨🏻‍💼 so I also have to iron my shirt and polish my swanky dress shoes and black steel toe boots. I wear the black boots back and forth to work through the snow, rain and muck and to prolong the life of my increasingly worn out dress shoes which I probably will need to replace later in the year. I mostly keep them for wearing in office at my desk for comfort and those odd times I get summoned over the Capitol or go over there to snag some soggy salmon or chicken dipped in that werid sauce rich people like so I save my packed dinner for a later date. But that doesn’t happen much these now that I’m Deputy in Research, it’s mostly behind a computer reading 📖 backgrounds and running stats. 🔢 But the security guards 💂 say I look swanky and less like a hillbilly when I wear my blazer and tie.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.5° from the due south horizon (-46.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. See I know a little trigonometry, mainly because I did some shadow analysis of that movie theater for Save the Pine Bush. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 Keep that in mind photographers, especially today with it clearing out. The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:34 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 5:05 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the east (97°) at an altitude of 39° from the horizon, 244,259 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 45 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of 52 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 4am. Increasing clouds 🌧, with a low of 34 degrees at 12am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 7th. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1970.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Well, by January standards, as the winter thaw continues. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 39. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. But we know what is next, it will come, and it will be ducking cold. Yet, for now I’m enjoying the heat being off, and still comfortable in a t-shirt inside, and a vest outside. You can probably guess what t-shirt that is. That said, I probably should buy one of those Palpation Nation shirts with the guy AI-ing a cow on it, so I can be cool like the interwebs, and actually wear that one to work on a casual summer day. But as I’ve been telling myself for two years now, I don’t buy shit like that even if I probably would wear it a lot.

As previously noted, next Monday is Static Electric Shock Day 🧼 when the sun will be setting at 4:41 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, freezing rain showers and temperatures between 36 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2008.

33 Nights I Camped in 2022

This was a tough year for getting out of town. My truck was getting creaking and old, rusted and always in risk of breaking down, though the only failure I had on vacation and that was a stupid loose lug-nut. But with high gas prices, inflation, and my desire to invest more in the markets, kept me home more then most other recent years. I also focused on destinations where I could camp for multiple nights, after parking my truck and leaving the engine off to save fuel. Many of the prime weekends of the year were raining.

Ultimately I camped 33 nights, which is about normal for me, though the trips were longer and closer to home.

My first camping trip of the year started out in February during President’s Day Weekend, February 20-22 at Rensselaerville State Forest. Winter camping and skiing, took a walk down to the explore the new OSI Parcel that will eventually be added to the state forest.

Campsite 2

Second trip of the year was up to the East Branch Sacandaga River, April 22-24, which is always my big April trip complete with a big bonfire, hiking along the East Branch and back to the Gorge Falls.

East Branch Sacandaga River

Third trip of the year was to Piseco-Powley Road’s House Pond Campsite, three nights, June 17-19, including exploring this previously unknown to me swimming hole. Had another big fire, spent a lot of time at the swimming hole across the way. Also visited the potholers a couple of times in the evening.

Swimming Hole Off Old Edick Road

Then from June 19-21, I moved up the road to Powley Place Campsite 9 for two nights. Hiked back to Goldmine Stream Falls and then on Tuesday hiked back to Big Alderbed.

Powley Campsite 10

The forth trip of the year was July 16-19th which I camped up Campsite 5 on Piseco-Powley Road, about a mile north of the Potholers. I don’t love this campsite, as much as House Pond but it was still within walking distance from the Potholers, and is remote enough that I can listen to music as loud as I want, have big fires and shoot guns.

Campfire

Fifth trip of the year was the Finger Lakes National Forest, camping off old Chicken Co-Op Road from July 30 to August 8, as my GPS likes to call it. Stayed at the same campsite all week, alternating between trips away from camp and staying in camp, mostly to save fuel and reduce costs. Brought my kayak, paddled Cayuta Lake. Spent a lot of time at Watkins Glen State Park. Had that loose lug nut on my truck.

Finger Lakes Sunset

Sixth trip of the year was to the Adirondacks, Labor Day Weekend and the Friday before, September 2-5th, namely that campsite in Perkins Clearing on Hardwood Hill up above Spectulator where I have excellent cell reception and can work remote. It was kind of a lazy trip with lots of clams, sweet corn and beer, though that Friday I worked remote and was busy with work, and then did day hikes from camp, specifically exploring Mud Lake Road, where I ran into a family of bears. It poured on Labor Day when I took down camp.

Morning view

Seventh trip was a mid September remote-working trip up to Rensselearville State Forest, one of a series of three autumn trips up to the state forest only about 40 minutes from home. I chose to go there as I knew I could get home quickly if necessary with work being so busy, plus knowing I could get home if there was something I couldn’t do with my data plan on my cellphone. I think the dates were that Friday when I remote worked — September 16-19th.

Catskill Mountains

My eight trip was Columbus Day Weekend, Friday October 7 to Monday the 10th. I had originally planned to head up to the Adirondacks, but on my way up north, around Glenville I noticed my truck was swaying more then I would like around the corners, despite just recently being checked out at the shop. Plus heading up to the Adirondacks meant I would have dead spots, which was bad when I was supposed to be remote working, supervising three major political campaigns across the state. So I turned around and headed up to the Heldebergs. Ended up going to Rensselaerville State Forest again, for a colorful trip, especially when I hiked along Cheese Hill Road to the new OSI Parcel overlooking the Catskill Mountains and rural lands of Schoharie County and Potter Hollow. I probably should have brought my gun and got my hunting license, but I was constantly on the phone dealing with one crisis or another for work. Also spent Columbus Day hiking around Huyck Preserve for the bulk of the day before heading home, showering and going out to visit the folks.

Cheese Hill Road

My ninth trip of the year was back to Rensselaerville State Forest. This trip was planned to be there, the last week of Friday to Sunday, October 28-30th, while working heavily remote as the political campaigns I was managing was in their last stretch. It was kind of a chilly weekend and busy with work. But I had my heater, and I did find time to get out and walk, as the colors faded away. It was a nice weekend but it reminded me that autumn was certainly on the way.

Taconics

The tenth trip of the year was back to the East Branch Sacandaga River. Hike back along the Stewart Creek Trail and camped for two fairly cold nights from Thursday December 8 – Saturday December 10th. Came back a day early as I wanted to check to see if I had jury duty. It wasn’t a bad weekend but everything was first cold from the previous day rain, and then everything was icy once things froze up. But I stayed warm by the campsite.

Back camping at the same site tonight

The eleventh and final trip of the year was to Rensselaerville State Forest, right where I started the year close to home. The snow was deep this time, some 2 feet deep with an even deeper snow bank to dig through. But I hot tented there for two nights, from Tuesday December 20-Thursday December 22. This was the only trip of the year when I didn’t camp in my truck.

Winter camping ?

Conclusions

I wouldn’t rank this as my greatest year ever, with the most adventures. But I made the best of the situation with inflation increasing the price of camping supplies and fuel for my big jacked up truck, which became more unreliable. Work was super busy with all those campaigns. The weather was often bad for the prime weekends of the year. But I made the best of the year.

December 29, 2022 Morning

Good morning! Happy Final Thursday of 2022. Then only seven years left in the decade from hell. Maybe the markets will be up next year but probably not. 📊 It’s just tough closing out the year on paper looking like your future 🔮 is sliding farther away. I shouldn’t complain, I’m getting some good deals. 💵 Rationally, yes, but it feels like things are going in the wrong way. It’s frustrating to think about. You ride the downs for the ups that are likely in the future, if you wait long enough.. But alas, five weeks until Ground Hog Day 🐻 or so I tell myself.

Fiery red skies and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌅 There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️Going to be a nice day especially around lunch time for that walk. My heat is off.

Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny ☁ ➡ ☀ , with a high of 46 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 24th. South wind around 7 mph. It’s already clearing a bit. A year ago, we had mist in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1915.❄

Almost didn’t get my deposits back at the machine. ♻ I swear I’ve had bad luck lately with the can recycling machine, although the Price Chopper one is usually better then Wally World, so I went there instead. Can got stuck in the machine, and I couldn’t get my slip back until I knocked it loose with another bottle. 🍾 Ultimately I got my deposits back, and got rid of bunch of aluminum cans that were filling up the outside garbage can. Not like you can really burn them.

With the warm weather coming, 🚿 I am glad that I got my truck washed. I don’t think there will be much salt on the roads come the weekend, though I guess they could apply some should the temperature drop. It’s done so I don’t have to worry about it. Forgot a other things though I will need at the some point, but they can probably wait until the New Year.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:58 am with sun having an altitude of 24.2° from the due south horizon (-46.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:45 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 5:02 pm, which is 46 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south-southeast (165°) at an altitude of 45° from the horizon, 232,832 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:38 pm. At sunset, look for mostly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 36 seconds over today.

Next week is the last week I’m on call for federal jury duty ⚖ so I’ll check later today and if I’m not called I guess I’m good. I also have a deferred state summons but I’m hoping the federal term counts for that and I’m done. Not that it matters much, it literally is only a block down from my office 🏢. Get paid either way.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 35 degrees at 10pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 6th. Yeah, I can leave the heat off. South wind around 7 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1933.

The NYE has improved, although only slightly. 🌧️ Kind of like the economy. New Years Eve, a chance of rain after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 49. South wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. New Years Day, more sun with a few showers not as warm, maybe 46. Still that’s a relative thing. Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees. But the first week of January seems likely to be in the fifties at times until the next cold blast. Maybe I have reason to hope for a sub $100 electric and fracked gas heating bill. ♨ I just can’t wait until the Ground Hog doesn’t see his shadow and I can sleep with the windows open again.
