Busy week ahead, ๐Ÿ‘two nights I’ll be working on Pine Bush stuff at the library, one night at a John Wolcott house and then packing on Thursday night. Cloudy Day at the Potholers

July 11, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 79 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The breeze and the clouds make it feel not all that warm – it comfortable in bed without hooking up the fan. I’m glad, the fan uses a lot of energy – upwards of 60 watts when it’s running. The dew point is 68 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 am.

I went over to John Wolcott’s house ๐Ÿ“‚ and we’re down to the last box of Albany files. Still probably a few more hours worth of Albany material to sort through, I’ll be back to it next week. Tomorrow night, it’s Friday night at the library, studying tax maps and rolls for Save the Pine Bush.๐ŸŒฒ

Great Blue Heron

July 10, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 75 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 66 degrees. The muggy weather ends Monday around noontime. ๐Ÿ˜“ Kind of a warm evening although I’m not sure if its as humid as it claims. Maybe I’ll feel differently when I head upstairs and retire to bed. Very comfy out back next to the fan.

Tonight I went to the Guilderland Town Board meeting to hear a status update on the proposed Rapp Road apartment complex. ๐Ÿข I was surprised to learn that the town is requiring a full environmental impact statement – last year only 200 projects state wide got full EIS last year.๐ŸŒฒGood news for the Pine Bush although there is much to happen. Then I went and got German Chocolate cake and soda at the Capitol Dinner which was very good. ๐Ÿฐ They’re pricey but good.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 69 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10pm. Light south wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1986.

Heading over to John Wolcott house to help him with his history project after work tomorrow. ๐Ÿ“‚ Down to the the final box of Albany history. Some good stuff in there and a lot of mundane things to. Friday evening I’m working on a research project for Save the Pine Bush๐Ÿ€ผ/strong>๓œกกt the library mostly digitizing tax maps and other fun stuff. Then Saturday I’m heading out to Schoharie for an overnight.

I was thinking this evening, if I want to camp in Painter Run in Pennsylvania, โ›บ I should reach out to the PA DCNR tomorrow to ensure that I get the permit in a timely fashion and can get it printed up before I head out on vacation. I haven’t been back there in years but I can’t imagine it’s changed much since then.

Cloudy Day at the Potholers

July 9, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ and 78 degrees waiting for the bus at the NYS Capitol. Calm wind. The dew point is 59 degrees. Not a half bad evening once I get home to sit out back.

I got out at five, went down to the waterfront and then to the Save the Pine Bush meeting. ๐ŸŒฒNot a bad evening but it ran long and I had to rush up the Madison Avenue hill to catch the bus. ๐Ÿš Not really hot but huffing and puffing made me tired. ๐Ÿ˜ด

I was a little discouraged after the meeting ๐Ÿ˜ฉbut so be it I’m a volunteer and I’ll do what I can do. It would be nice to win for the environment ๐ŸŒŽ but I’m not going to loose sleep about it – but it’s a good fight. But I’m mostly concerned about my future which ultimately doesn’t involve the Capital Region.

The ice cream I eat when I got home was good ๐Ÿจ but I eat too much as that’s the problem with having it at home. I have absolutely no self control after a depressing night like tonight.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 59 at 9pm. Light and variable wind. One more night of pleasant sleeping but the humidity will pick up on Wednesday into Thursday. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1963.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 68% illuminated. The moon will set at 1:12 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Monday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 5:26 am with the first light at 4:52 am, which is 43 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 11 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny and hot โ˜€, with a high of 92 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 10am. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph. A year ago, we had sunny skies. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

That Ravinewood Off Grid cabin ๐Ÿก I posted earlier is super cool. Massive solar system, really well built to power essentially a modern home ten miles from electric lines. While I doubt that I’d ever own something that big and fancy – I’m more of a dirty hick – I do think it’s cool. ๐Ÿฝ When you think about utility bills of all sorts by going off grid, growing and raising some of your own food, managing own trash, ๐Ÿ”ฅ forgoing internet, you can save a lot of money. ๐Ÿ’ต

I decided going forward to pull back a bit from investing in the markets – a little bit – because I have a feeling finally things are getting a bit over priced. ๐Ÿ“‰ I’m not timing the markets or pulling money out but I’m seeking more safety from an high interest savings account over stocks for future investments. It’s just a matter of percentage going forward. We might have some more growth but I’m sure a big drop is coming and it will take years to recover from the drop just like the 2008 recession. Maybe it’s a mistake but also I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay in New York and I want to not have things locked up too long in stock paper. ๐Ÿ“„I’m getting old fast, although I’ll probably remain locally as long as I have family around.

In four weeks on August 6 the sun will be setting at 8:09 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 25 minutes and 18 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 92 and 69 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1900.

Looking ahead, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 1 weeks, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 6 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 10 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 12 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 69 weeks.

Half moon

July 8, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clear and 73 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ๐ŸŒŸ The dew point is 56 degrees. Pleasant summer evening, sat out back for a while with a book.

I could have gone for my evening walk but I was tired and lazy. ๐ŸšถI did get the camping gear put back in the crawl space so I won’t be tripping on it come the morning. I’ll will want to get the cooler out for Saturday when I do the overnight in Schoharie County. It might be fun to check out the not so Old Blenheim Bridge then besides all the other activities I mentioned earlier.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 18th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 9pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1963.

Tonight will have a First Quarter with 57% illuminated with the moon setting at 12:43 am. The moon will set at 1:00 am. The First Quarter Moon will be tonight with partly cloudy skies. The Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ is next Monday. The sun will rise at 5:26 am with the first light at 4:51 am, which is 43 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 51 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 7 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 57 at 8am. Should be another nice day. Light northwest wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 103 was set in 1936.

Busy day at work. ๐Ÿข But I’m getting caught up on things and I’m figuring it will make the week go fast. Two nights of Pine Bush events coming up followed by me going to John Wolcott house ๐Ÿก for more Albany history files. ๐Ÿ“‚ Almost done with the project, maybe I’ll end up doing Schenectady next although I don’t know its been a laborous process.

Ordered another, actually two burners for the camp stove ๐Ÿ”ฅ although I only need to replace one now – oddly enough the one that gets the least use. I figured save on shipping and have the part handy. The old one just rusted through probably from all the liquids boiling over and causing rust plus I may have applied pressure to it causing the rust to lead to cracks. If one fails the second won’t be far away.

In four weeks on August 5 the sun will be setting at 8:10 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 24 minutes and 24 seconds earlier then tonight. Summer vacation will just be a distant memory then. The record high of 99 degrees was set back in 1955.

My summer vacation is in two weeks. โ›บ Finger Lakes for the first half of the week then I want to camp in Allegany County in the state forest were the Harry Women of Canasserga hang out, do a day trip to Letchworth State Forest,โ›ฒ camp at Rock City then Allegany State Park and then down to the Alleghany National Forest. ๐ŸŠ

I am thinking about the week before Columbus Day this year for my autumn trip to Pennsylvania and West Virginia. ๐Ÿ‚This year the focus will be on those states, no trips to Virginia, but I’ll probably head farther south in West Virginia to see the big New River Gorge bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ on the West Virginia coin. Plus maybe a few overnights in Dolly Sods. Maybe too early for peak color in places but who knows, Dolly Sods is quite high elevation.

Looking ahead, Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚ is in 1 weeks, Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 4 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 5 weeks, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 7 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 8 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 13 weeks.

Edge of Barnum Pond

July 3, 2019 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Mostly sunny โ˜€ and 91 degrees at the land of the Albanian. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 61 degrees. The humidity actually isn’t that bad this afternoon but I can’t promise that will be the story for the full weekend.

I’m heading home now with the hope of leaving by four and maybe taking 30 up to Moose Plains rather than the expressway. With Northway traffic it might not be that much longer. ๐Ÿš™ ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿšš๐Ÿš—I’ll probably skip the Thruway too but who knows. I liked taking US 20 to Daunesburg Churches Road to NY 20 but that’s kind of slow. But non stressful. โ›บ I don’t care how late I get up there but it’s nicer to be driving in the light.

The sun will set at 8:36 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 82 degrees. The dew point will be 63 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 5 mph.

Flag on Hang Gliders Cliff

July 1, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 73 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 59 degrees. Pretty nice summer evening for sure.

I decided rather than go down to the park with a book tonight ๐Ÿ“– I would just sit out back. It turned out to be a pretty nice evening and I got a lot of reading done from that FDR book I posted earlier in the evening. I’ve been very fascinated with FDR ever since reading Richard Hofstadter essay, well chapter called “The Patrician as Opportunist”, from his book The American Political Tradition. FDR wasn’t only a support president, he was a ruthless politician, and much of what he did was centered around his own political advancement. By no means was he an ideologue. It’s clear that his polio only made him stronger. โœŠ

I went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ and then sat out back for a while and read a bit more. Got more moo juice ๐Ÿฎ at the store so I’ll have it with coffee โ˜• tomorrow. I have to pick up my dry cleaning tomorrow although I forgot to get cash today but I think they take cards ๐Ÿ’ณ and that’s an option with a $37 dry cleaning bill. I did two sportscoats and my overcoat so shit adds up. Dry cleaning is expensive, as all the mitigation and clean up from the spilled PERC they use in dry cleaning is expensive. Most dry cleaners when they close become superfund sites, although most newer dry cleaners are switching to frozen carbon dioxide or other chemicals to replace the PERC. ๐Ÿ‘”

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 61 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 3rd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 10pm. West wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 77 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1978.

Tonight will have a New Moon with 0% illuminated. The moon will rise at 5:07 am. The New Moon will be tonight with partly cloudy skies. The Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ is in 2 weeks. The sun will rise at 5:21 am with the first light at 4:47 am, which is 32 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 45 minutes of darkness, an increase of 41 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers before 10am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4pm. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 97 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1966.

After work tomorrow I’ll pack for Moose River Plains. โ›บ It should be a nice quiet weekend once I’m up there and get things set up, although I’ll probably camp on the east end on Wednesday night and then camp farther west the final three nights. I also need to go shopping for food as once I’m up north the options are limited and expensive. Beautiful wild country. I’m hoping by the second day to have camp set up and be able to walk everywhere I need from there. ๐Ÿ˜ด

I shared that article earlier in the day on why one person chose to leave Upstate New York. โœ‹ While liberals will dismiss it as republican propaganda, and I agree it focuses to much on the incumbent governor ignoring the long standing practices of the republicans that once dominated the legislature and the governorship for many years, I do see why many people would choose lower cost, freer states to live in compared to New York. Our state is great if you live in the metropolitan areas or benefits from the many services offered by state for the disabled, elderly, young or poor but for many others it’s kind of a raw deal. It’s a wonderful state to live in – for example – if you child has cebral pausy or you have a wheelchair to get around – compared to red states. ๐Ÿ‘ถ Rural life in New York is basically one work around after another with laws that kind of fit badly for upstate. ๐Ÿšœ I know upstate legislators try but New York City lies large over the rest of the state.
