Good evening! Rain and 64 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees. It’s been a rather rainy day, I spent a lot of time in truck cap. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am.

So it’s rained and rained some more today. ๐Ÿ’ฆ I decided to hang out at camp today, doing some day drinking and laying back in the bed of the truck. It’s fun to be day drinking ๐Ÿป while you glance at your email ๐Ÿ“ง see how busy your colleagues are in the office. I also spent some time under the tarp in the hammock for a while too. I did make some lunch – a pork chop with some sauce and cheese. I also built a small fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ but I retired to bed of the truck soon thereafter as the rain picked up.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 1am. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 2nd. Maximum dew point of 62 at 9pm. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1981.

Last night was pretty watching the Waning Gibbous Moon rise ๐ŸŒ– and the bugs weren’t that bad for a change. The stars โœจ were nice until the moonlight and clouds crowded that out. You could also see the heat lightening from the storm some 80 miles south of here in Williamsport, Penna.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 59% illuminated with the moon rising at 11:39 pm. The moon will set at 11:57 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tomorrow with mostly clear skies. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:49 am with the first light at 5:16 am, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 13 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 49 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers after 1pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 75 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6am. North wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Should be a great day if not a bit cool. Didn’t help that my sweater got wet in the tent today but I’ll hang it out and should dry with the low humidity. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 85 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1955.

I am not surprised but it looks like Robert Treman is closed tomorrow due to high rain levels leaving the gorge mucky and water levels too high for swimming. ๐ŸŠ Instead I’ll probably go to Watkins Glen pool tomorrow for a good portion of the day. I think I also want to watch the sunset from one of pastures up in the National Forest.

While it’s been fun out in the Finger Lakes, I look forward to getting further west in the state on Wednesday and down to Pennsylvania as I’m kind of bored with visiting and swimming in the same state parks. ๐Ÿš™ It’s not really an adventure if you’ve done it a dozen times before.

In four weeks on August 19 the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 34 minutes and 56 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 66 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1899.

Looking ahead, Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 2 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 weeks, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 5 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 6 weeks, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 2 months and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 11 weeks.

Washbowl Reflects

July 21, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 71 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees. It’s rapidly becoming a nicer evening, even a bit cool as the dew point is dropping as is the mercury. I doubt I’ll be running the fan much if at all tonight.

It was a fun day first hanging out at camp, laying back in the hammock under the deep blue skies and then making a nice breakfast. Then I kind of procrastined in securing camp ๐Ÿ”’ and getting firewood before heading out for the day.

I spent most of the afternoon at the pool ๐ŸŠ at Watkins Glen State Park until around six o’clock when the kicked everyone out because of a high reading of chlorine in the pool. Probably with so many people in the pool and less than expected evaporation, things got overdosed. Earlier in the day people mentioned a chlorine smell in the locker room but I did not notice it. My nose ๐Ÿ‘ƒ also was a bit sore, I’m wondering if it was irritated by the chlorine. But it was fine, I was already on my final swim of the evening and was going to get to shower ๐Ÿšฟ in before they closed and it got too late. The only thing that sucked is everybody was trying to get a shower at once in the end because everybody got out of the pool at once and the lifeguards highly recommended everyone take a shower as soon as possible to avoid skin irritation from the chlorine. It probably is just standard procedure when there is a technical violation of the chlorine standard.

I love the Adirondack chairs and the terrace above the swimming pool for sitting out in the sun โ˜€ up there but at 84 degrees the pool was uncomfortably warm and crowded. I think on Tuesday, my final day full day in the Finger Lakes, I might do Robert Treman one more time as Enfield Glen is so refreshing if not cold then end the day in Watkins Glen. Probably hike both glens too besides swimming. .

After I finally got a shower, I drove down to Glen Dairy Bar and got a large butternut soft ice cream sundae. I was pretty happy with it. ๐ŸจThey always have good ice cream. On Tuesday when I’m thinking I’ll get their hot apple pie sundae. ๐Ÿ That’s also a very good treat. I then went Walmart and ended up turning over to Clute Park and watching the sunset. I also pulled over at Hector Falls and took a few pictures. I got the groceries and supplies I need so I can stay at camp tomorrow and just hike to Foster or Potomac Pond to do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ on what should be the most cloudy and cool day of vacation.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 66 degrees at 2am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 10pm. West wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 68% illuminated. The Last Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with mostly clear skies. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:48 am with the first light at 5:15 am, which is 56 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 46 seconds over last night.

In a little bit I’m going to hike back over to Foster Pond for some star gazing and hopefully to see the actual moon rising tonight. ๐ŸŽ‘ It’s clearer than I had expected and I’m on vacation so I can hang out there as late as I want. Tomorrow isn’t going to be a real nice day so I might as well sleep on as late as possible.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 70 degrees at 5pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 21st. Kind of like the first day of autumn, although it’s always colder on the Finger Lakes. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

As I previously mentioned, I am planning to stick around the Finger Lakes National Forest tomorrow, maybe doing some hiking and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ. I get tired of driving all the time and I feel like the best way to get to know the land is at times to stay close to where you are camping. I should have plenty of power for tomorrow at camp even if the solar power is limited due to the clouds. โ˜ I mean that’s the whole purpose of the extra battery ๐Ÿ”‹ in the bed of my truck. I have the rest of the week with ample sun โ˜€ to recharge things. For a while when the sun was out I was getting 85 watts which over an hour is 85 watt hours. It might take a while to fully recharge things if I’m down 1.2 kWh combined capacity at 50% discharged but the sun shines more than one hour each day and I can always use the alternator when driving to make up some of difference. I’m hoping tomorrow won’t be a wash out but if it’s really wet I could hang a tarp or hide out in the tent or truck cap and might consider driving down to the Watkins Glen library to use the Wi-Fi. ๐Ÿ“š

In four weeks on August 18 the sun will be setting at 8:03 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 34 minutes and 16 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid, partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 77 and 68 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 1913.

While getting my ice cream I passed one of the many long haul garbage trucks that go through Watkins Glen ๐Ÿšฎ delivering waste most likely to Ontario County Landfill on US 20 in Geneva or maybe Seneca Meadows. I know folks are out there doing political things to reduce waste but most of the time they are pretty silly like banning Styrofoam take out containers or plastic bags. Little is done about big picture things.๐Ÿ’จ If anything, politics is used to make people feel virtuous and do little in their own lives. I look forward to when I have that off grid property and can take my own actions but for now I avoid eating out or being big into that comsimeristic thing. I don’t like politics when it becomes an excuse for people not to change their own lives. ๐Ÿ’ญ

Looking ahead, State Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก is a month away, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 6 weeks, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 2 months, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 9 weeks and Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 12 weeks.

Edge in Evening

July 21, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Exactly one week of vacation left. Six weeks to the last Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ†. Autumn is coming, but first I should enjoy summer. Sunny and nice and 75 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒžThere is a north-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 70 degrees. With the breeze, you don’t really feel the humidity, laying back in the hammock.

Today will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny โ˜€, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 11am. Northwest wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1930.

On this day in 1925, Dayton, Tennessee high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined $100. ๐Ÿ™Š Darn criminals ruining our country. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ The judge incorrectly set the fine, rather then letting the jury do it, so his conviction was overturned on appeal. The law would remain on the books until it was repealed 1967. Also in 1983, the world’s lowest temperature in an inhabited location is recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica at โˆ’89.2 ยฐC (โˆ’128.6 ยฐF). โ„They should build a pipe and send it up north to cool off people efficiently. Probably doesn’t follow the laws of thermodynamics.

The sun will set at 8:38 pm with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 50 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. West wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

So far summer vacation is going fairly well, ๐ŸŠ although I was very disappointed that the swim beach at Cayuga Lake at Taughannock Falls was closed due blue green algea pollution. First time that’s happened while I’ve been coming here in the summer. I ended up going to Robert Treman State Park and swimming in Enfield Glen. It turned out to be a nice afternoon with lots of sun and despite traffic delays getting in past the park gates. It’s obnoxious that they charge park fees in New York. 67 degrees in the water which is remarkably warm for Enfield Glen.

I also stopped at Montezuma for a while but it was incredibly hot. ๐Ÿฆ There was some wildlife, especially butterflies but it was oppressively hot after coming out of my well air conditioning truck. Plus I was looking forward to the beach. The beach closure was such a disappointment.

But the flip side is I did get the campsite I really like on Chicken Coop Road ๐Ÿฅ so I’m here through Wednesday morning. I set up a tent for my surplus gear and dirty clothes, โ›บ and the flags, hammock and table. I set up camp relatively slowly and it got dark fairly early as some clouds pushed in.

I laid back in the hammock until quarter to ten, and then went for a walk to Foster Pond ๐Ÿธ to watch the moon rise ๐ŸŽ‘. I figured it would be cool to watch the moon rise fifty years after the moon landing. Unfortunately I waited until 11:20, but it didn’t rise until later. I ended up walking back to camp ๐Ÿšถafter which it rose. But it was buggy and I was worried ๐Ÿ˜ฏ about getting caught in a thunderstorm. โšก That was kind of obnoxious. But it was a nice night back at Foster Pond with lots of fireflies ๐Ÿ and stars โœจ with flashes of lightning โšก in the distance.

I got back to camp, cracked open another beer ๐Ÿป and had a small fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ mostly to burn up the garbage and just watch the flames. I got to stop throwing the sweet corn husks and cobs on the other camp trash, ๐ŸŒฝ they don’t burn well. What was supposed to be nice fire a stinky mess of smoldering plastic and food waste. Yuck. Maybe I should have built a hotter fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ with more wood. Instead going forward I’ll toss the husks and food waste ๐Ÿฒ in the bucket shitter ๐Ÿ’ฉ and bury them in the woods when I break camp. They’ll rot away pretty good. I know when I own my off-grid home, ๐Ÿก I’ll definitely want to do lots of composting – at least mixing the food waste with animal manure rather than burning it with the trash in the pit. Plus rather then becoming air pollution it will become fertilizer. ๐ŸŒบ

I had a nice breakfast of eggs and sausage this morning ๐Ÿณ, and I’ve been sitting in the hammock enjoying the breeze. I got some firewood but I should grab some more before I head out to swimming in Watkins Glen ๐ŸŠ. I fear ๐Ÿ˜ฑ the nice weather may not last all day so I probably should think about heading out, maybe around noon. ๐Ÿ‘I’m on vacation so I’m in no rush. That said, tomorrow doesn’t look great so I’ll probably hang out in camp. Going to be cool and gray tomorrow, I might stay close to camp, instead just hiking around in the National Forest. Also going to get something good at the Watkins Glen Dairy bar.

I’m planning to stay in the Finger Lakes through Wednesday morning then will head to Allegany County on Wednesday. Thursday I might either go up to Letchworth State Park or maybe Cattaraugus County and then the Allegheny National Forest. โ›บ While I have a camping permit for the Tioga State Forest in Penna for three nights, I doubt I’ll stay more than two.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now the State Fair Opens ๐ŸŽก when the sun will be setting at 7:59 pm with dusk at 8:28 pm. The average high temperature is 80 degrees.

 Helldiver Pond

July 20, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš! Humid, damp, overcast and around 74 degrees at the Cherry Ridge Camping Area. โ›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 69 degrees. So far the weather on vacation hasn’t been really inspiring. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

I am actually hoping that the sun comes out earlier โ˜€ even though it will be hot just because I like nice sunny days and it will recharge the batteries and be nice when I get to the Taughannock Beach this afternoon before heading up to the National Forest tonight. I’ll doubt I’ll get the campsite I like up there tonight but I figure Sunday night it will be available and I’ll probably camp there through Wednesday and then for Thursday night head out west to Allegany County.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Partly sunny โ˜€, with a high of 88 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 74 at 12pm. Heat index values as high as 97. Southwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1991.

The sun will set at 8:34 pm with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, watch out for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 83 degrees. The dew point will be 74 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 85. โ›ฑ Definitely muggy but not as bad as in the city. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 52 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy , with a low of 71 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 74 at 6pm. West wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1974.

Replacement burner on the camp stove is working well. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I do need to stop this morning and get some deodorant and clothes pins, the later I forget to buy on Thursday. I’m going to take US 20 out to Montezuma and get my mom some wine ๐Ÿท and then head south on NY 414 to Trumansburg to swim. ๐ŸŠ Air conditioning will feel nice in the truck.

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11’s crew successfully makes the first landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. ๐ŸŒ• Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, well at least in England. Us Americans would get to watch it the next day due to the time zone difference.

Farms in Valley

July 18, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 73 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. Another hot and sticky evening although the mercury has dropped a fair bit. The skies will clear tomorrow around 6 am.

I’ve packed what I can tonight, I’ll do the personal items come morning and the coolers, propane and a few other things after work. I want to be on the road by 6 pm but 6:15 is acceptable as the sun doesn’t set until late and it’s going to be hot evening. ๐ŸŒ‡

Didn’t have laundry soap do I ended up visiting the grocery store first to buy done groceries and supplies. Then I did the laundry thing, packed my clothes, checked the oil in my truck and topped off the windshield washer fluid. ๐Ÿš™ Sat out back for a little while. I also tested the campstove and cleaned it with mixed results. But regardless the stove is working well. Now just to not forget the price propane.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 66 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 11pm. South wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1875.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 90% illuminated. The moon will set at 8:00 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with partly cloudy skies. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:34 am with the first light at 5:01 am, which is 53 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny and hot ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 92 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 4pm. Heat index values as high as 101. That humidity won’t be nice but at least I’m leaving for vacation after work tomorrow. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1904.

Tomorrow I climb out of the valley to the hills and hollows of Madison County, then Saturday the hills give way to rolling country and drumlins then to long hills of the Finger Lakes. From there it’s back in hill and hollow country of Allegany and Cattaraugus County which fades to the long hills and plateaus of Allegheny National Forest. Then it’s back to the hills and hollows outside of Wellsboro and the Pine Creek Gorge which eventually becomes more rolling and gentler as I head back towards the western most Poconos and ultimately back in New York nine days later near Binghamton.

In four weeks on August 15 the sun will be setting at 7:56 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 32 minutes and 18 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 88 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1959.

Looking ahead, August ๐ŸŒป is in 2 weeks and Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 11 weeks.

Frame 933

July 16, 2019 Night

Good evening! Cloudy with occasional flashes of lighting on this hot and humid evening still around 81 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ โšก There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“ Only a short reprieve though as it will be back for the start of my vacation.

It’s a fairly nice evening ๐ŸŒƒ out back by the fan although for a while there was a thunderstorm rolling in and it had some big rain drops as I got off the bus ๐Ÿš and ran home. Didn’t last for long although it’s definitely warm and sticky in my bedroom. When I retire for the night I’ll probably bring out the big box fan but I’ll probably leave it on low to save electricity and because noisy on high.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy โšก, with a low of 71 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 9pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1974.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 98% illuminated. The moon will set at 6:02 am. The Last Quarter Moon is next Tuesday with heavy rain possible. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:32 am with the first light at 4:59 am, which is 51 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 2 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 33 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 82 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 27th. Maximum dew point of 72 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1900.

I’ve decided on Friday night to drive out to Madison County. ๐Ÿš˜ I’m going to take the bus home and pack the coolers when I get home so they won’t get to hot the first day. Going to be tough on ice, especially the first half of the week. โ˜€ I thought for a while about leaving Saturday morning around eight and doing Glimmerglass Lake Beach but I think I want to be in the Finger Lakes by Saturday as I’m only planning on spending half my week there with the balance in the Southern Tier and Pennsylvania. Saturday I will swim in Cayuga Lake and then overnight in the National Forest, Sunday will be a a beach day at those wonderful Adirondack Chairs at the Watkins Glen pool. I expect to get a good tan out of it.

I bet with the long hot nights, fan and lights burning late into the night with many sunny days I’ll burn a lot of electricity on my truck but with the two accessory batteries I expect I’ll be able to handle the load entirely with the solar. ๐Ÿ’กPlus charging my laptop as I now have the OrthoPhotos around Crossgates Mall downloaded and print outs of the tax maps so I can continue to work on the Save the Pine Bush ๐ŸŒฒstuff. Maybe produce and consume 2 to 3 kWh over the week?

Tomorrow evening more Pine Bush stuff at the library and maybe start to think about packing. ๐Ÿ’ผ Thursday it’s off to the laundromat plus I want to pick up a table cloth at the dollar store and a few things at Hannaford. I’ll buy whatever else I need while I’m out there at Walmart or other grocery stores. The Watkins Glen Walmart has a lot of camping stuff. ๐Ÿ‡

In four weeks on August 13 the sun will be setting at 7:59 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 51 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain showers, humid, partly cloudy and temperatures between 79 and 68 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 61 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 5 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 9 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 11 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 68 weeks.

 Cascade Lake

July 15, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear under the full moon ๐ŸŒ• and 71 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. It is beautiful moonlit night before the heat and humidity really kicks in later in the week.

I got some nice fresh and cold milk from Stewart’s, ๐Ÿฎ and I appreciated the local cows with some fresh blueberries and cherries ๐Ÿ’. I liked the blueberries but I guess the cherries I bought where only modestly sweet. I thought about buying ice cream but this is a healthier option. It was a nice reward after a pleasant evening walk. ๐Ÿšถ

Been working on Save the Pine Bush stuff at the library, doing research and recreating tax maps for a project for Save the Pine Bush. Some of those metes and bounds for the Crossgates parcel are tough to reproduce. ๐ŸŒ The metes are hard to find the reference point of the imaginary lines, and the bounds often follow detailed building edges. And it’s a shit ton of parcels. But I’m making progress. ๐ŸŒฒI’ll be back at it Wednesday night, as tomorrow night I’m over at John Wolcott house for his history project and file sorting. ๐Ÿ“‚ I’m thinking if a print the tax maps (probably after breaking the county’s silly print disable – Linux don’t care ๐Ÿง), and download the underlying OrthoPhoto geotiff, then I can probably work on it one day at camp off line.

Tomorrow marks 50 years since the first departure from the earth to the moon. ๐Ÿš€ While only 24 human beings would ever walk on the moon, it was a remarkable accomplishment that was probably abandoned much too early in our history only three years later in December 1972. Some people are skeptical about the moon landings, it only happened six times by man before getting the congressional axe. โœ‚

I should see if PBS or one of the other YouTube channels will have a special I can watch about Apollo 11. ๐ŸŽ‘ It would be fun to watch on the laptop while I’m at camp during vacation. That said by the time on my trip it should be the last quarter moon ๐ŸŒ“ so it should be good for looking at the stars assuming that I have clear nights up at Foster Pond. ๐ŸŒŸ Maybe see some shooting stars.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10pm. Light southwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1946.

Tonight will have a Full Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ• with 99% illuminated. The sun will rise at 5:31 am with the first light at 4:58 am, which is 51 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and one minute of darkness, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. That’s like a hot summer day with humidity pushing in tomorrow. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1900.

So I have the camping permit ๐ŸŽซ for camping in Wellsboro Thursday through Saturday nights but I don’t have to camp all those nights. It’s just an option, although I’ll probably stay at least one night as I don’t want to drive all the way back from the Allegheny National Forest in one day and I’d like to hike at least part of the Pine Creek Gorge trail. ๐Ÿšถ I wish I had a working bicycle, that’s a good way to explore it.

I’m still on the fence about leaving Friday night versus Saturday morning. If I leave Friday night I will be out in the Finger Lakes by Saturday afternoon as I’ll stay at Brookfield on Friday night and drive the rest of the way on Saturday. ๐ŸŠ Probably take old Route Twenty out through Montezuma as mom wants me to get her wine ๐Ÿท and I like avoiding both Cortland and Ithaca going that way. If I leave Saturday, I’ll go to Glimmerglass State Park Beach on Otsego Lake, then Brookfield Saturday night, and get to the Finger Lakes National Forest later on Sunday night, when I think it’s most likely that I can get the Chicken Co-op Campsite that my GPS likes to call it. โ›บ Which ever day I arrive, probably before setting up camp I’ll visit Taughnahock State Park and check out the beach on Cayuga Lake. I checked, the Winery opens at nine AM both days including Sunday. I didn’t know wineries could sell before noon in New York but apparently they can. That said I doubt I’d be out to Montezuma before noon either day.๐Ÿฆ Probably won’t spend much time at Montezuma as it’s going to hot and sticky and there won’t be many birds out and about.

I kind of would prefer to visit the Watkins Glen Pool on the weekend ๐ŸŠ as it’s fully open then. Weekdays half of the pool is closed I believe although maybe not if it’s hot and sunny and there is enough people. But then again the swim lanes are fully open and the nice chairs are always available when the pool is open. The other thing is I only plan to spend half the week in the Finger Lakes, the balance of the week will be in Allegany or Cattaraugus County in Western New York and then down to Pennsylvania for a few days. ๐Ÿš™

In four weeks on August 12 the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 5 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 79 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 61 degrees. The record high of 99 degrees was set back in 1944.

Looking ahead, Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 3 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 weeks, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 6 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 7 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 12 weeks.
