Good evening! Cloudy and 73 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. It’s not really warm but you really feel the humidity tonight. The skies will clear Wednesday around 2 am.

I went down to the library for a while this evening ๐Ÿ“™ to do some internet surfing and then went to Walmart. Now I’m sitting out back with a cold glass of apple juice. ๐Ÿ Probably at least somewhat healthier and a lot cheaper than beer. ๐Ÿป Got to save the good stuff for camping. Fan feels nice in the hot weather.

Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 68 degrees at 3am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 6am. Light south wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1957.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 98% illuminated. The moon will set at 3:56 am. The Full Moon ๐ŸŒ• is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies expected. The sun will rise at 5:59 am with the first light at 5:28 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 59 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have scattered showers and thunderstorms before 8am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 8am and 4pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 75 degrees at 12pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 69 at 12pm. I guess I better bring my rain coat. Light south wind. And maybe turn the hot water heater back on? I turned it off before vacation and have left it off as it’s been so warm. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1947.

In four weeks on September 9 the sun will be setting at 7:15 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 34 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had cold weather, partly sunny and temperatures between 63 and 48 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 54 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1959.

Tuesday is a stay at home night, maybe work on some Pine Bush stuff or other projects. ๐ŸŒฒWednesday is a Guilderland Town Planning Board meeting to attend and Thursday I’m heading over to John Wolcott. The weekend is to be decided, I might head up north. Maybe even take off Friday, I really should use some of my vacation time up before the end of the summer, I’ve taken relatively few days off this summer. ๐ŸŠ

On that note, I’m pretty tired ๐Ÿ˜ด and think I should retire to bed. I sore too and have a bit of a headache but I think that’s just Monday disease or reading too many obnoxious Facebook comments. My liberal friends from Albany don’t represent the whole world ๐ŸŒ and there is much beyond New York, even Pennsylvania reminds one that not all is New York. And in less than two months I’ll be in the vast wilds of West Virginia.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 2 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 3 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 8 weeks.

Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires

August 11, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clear and 66 degrees in Dormansville, NY. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. Not a half bad evening, sleeping in my truck at my parents house.

I don’t think it was a bad weekend, got out and had some fun in the wilderness. โ›บ I had forgotten how nice the Catskills are although maybe a bit too popular. I kind of like the quieter places I normally go but they aren’t as scenic. Didn’t get much bites while fishing ๐ŸŽฃ and the pool was cold and the deep section was closed but other than that it was a nice weekend.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 55 degrees at 2am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 6th. I can’t wait for September weather, it’s coming up soon. Maximum dew point of 53 at 10pm. West wind around 5 mph. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 94% illuminated. The moon will set at 3:02 am. The Full Moon ๐ŸŒ• is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 5:59 am with the first light at 5:28 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 27 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 3pm. Typical for tomorrow. Maximum dew point of 62 at 4pm. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1944.

In four weeks on September 8 the sun will be setting at 7:17 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 3 seconds earlier then tonight. August 10, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 55 degrees at the Burnt-Rossman State Forest. โ˜” There is a west-northwest breeze occasionally reaching 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. A pretty nice evening maybe a bit cool but we are starting to get towards autumn and it’s expected to warm up more come Sunday.

Hiking Hunter Mountain was nice ๐Ÿ—ผ and there are some really great views from the tower. As I noted earlier, the restored old Rangers Cabin is amazing and the view is great. A lot of people there but the Spruce Horse Trail was relatively quiet. It’s a nice hike from that direction especially figuring I’m a bit out of shape these days as I’ve not been doing as much walking ๐Ÿšถ recently but I plan to do more in the coming weeks.

Then I enjoyed visiting Pratt Rock which despite spending so much time in the Northern Catskills โ›ฒ I had never visited. It’s a short but very steep and somewhat slippery – dangerous hike to the top but great views from the summit and the historic carvings are neat although the whole area is a bit shabby and could use some rehab and maybe some blazes on the trail and a hike map.

This morning I went out to breakfast ๐Ÿณ with the parents and didn’t have much packed so I didn’t get a real early start. I am a slow hiker and I spent a lot of time at Hunter Mountain overlook do by time I was off Pratt Rock it was after 7 pm with camp more than a half hour away so it was a bit of hurry to get up there but I got the campsite I wanted and had enough time to gather firewood before dark so it all worked out.

Tonight will have isolated showers before 10pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 49 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 22nd. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

It was cloudy and sprinkling a bit when I set up camp but it’s cleared up a bit now. โœจ Fair number of stars although the moon is blocking some out with its light. ๐ŸŽ‘ Full moon isn’t that far off – next week. ๐ŸŒ• Having a beer or two ๐Ÿป and soon I’m going to retire to my truck for the night. ๐ŸŒƒ Didn’t do the hammock tonight because its a bit cool tonight and this site which was recently logged doesn’t have a lot of places to hang a hammock. I also wanted to keep camp simple as I want to sleep in tomorrow but have camp that’s relatively easy to take down so I have time to fish ๐Ÿ  before heading to Mine Kill to swim. ๐ŸŠ

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 89% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:13 am. The ๐ŸŒ• is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 6:00 am with the first light at 5:29 am, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 13th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6pm. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. Might actually be a bit cool tomorrow at Mine Kill State Park. ๐ŸŠ Good though for hiking. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

In four weeks on September 7 the sun will be setting at 7:21 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 42 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1945.

If I had known how cloudy today would have been I’d probably stay home ๐Ÿก but I enjoyed Hunter and Pratt Rock regardless. Summer is rapidly fading away so I should maximize it before it’s gone. ๐Ÿ˜” It was kind of fun to drive through Greenville and Durham again but it kind of saddens me how much it’s changed in two decades and maybe how much I’ve changed. Every time I visit my old hometown I feel like Rip Van Winkle. ๐Ÿ‘ด The are so beautiful overlooking the hick town I grew up in. Unfortunately the world ๐ŸŒ of my childhood no longer exists. Maybe I should stop by the old Town Park and watch the ducks from the gazebo as I once did years ago at lunch.

I do like the small towns and the rural poor at least by the economic standards of the urban elite. I really like the dirty life, the hobby farmer in the trailer or rundown house. ๐Ÿก It’s so much better of a life than the surburbanite life with the vinyl siding and perfect chemical treated lawn. Poor people don’t waste as much as the comfortable surburbanite.

Looking ahead, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 2 weeks and Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 6 weeks.

Matthew's Hill Road

August 1, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clear and 77 degrees taking the CDTA Route 18. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees.

I’m talking the bus home, ๐Ÿš noticing how much earlier the sun sets now that we are into August. Depending how late I get up to the Adirondacks tomorrow I may want to buy firewood on the way up there. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Super tired after all those late nights working on Pine Bush stuff. ๐ŸŒฒIt’s really been consuming a lot of my free time outside of work so I haven’t done much on the blog lately, and I’ve been up after eleven most nights. It’s all the had habits I got in during vacation.

Once I get home I’ll have a quick dinner, load the kayak up and pack my camping gear. โ›บ Shouldn’t be a a big deal, it’s just a weekend up north. I will need to stop for a few supplies ok the way up on Friday night but shouldn’t be a big deal.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 59 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8pm. Calm wind. Good sleeping ๐Ÿ˜ด weather which I really need. ๐ŸŒฒIn 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 74 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1976.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 5% illuminated. The moon will rise at 7:24 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of t-storms then chance of showers. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:47 am with the first light at 5:15 am, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 33 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 13 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 58 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Made more progress on John Wolcott papers. ๐Ÿ“„ It’s always a nice walk over there after work ๐Ÿšถ when it’s not too hot. Some of the stuff is really interesting and a lot less so.

Checked out what the dental filing involves. ๐Ÿ˜I guess it’s not going to be that expensive with insurance, but I should make sure to brush my teeth more carefully in the back going forward. I’d think with all the milk I drink ๐Ÿฎ and the fact that I don’t eat sweets regularly it wouldn’t be a problem but I guess it’s part of getting old. I do need to try to floss more too. It might be a little painful but it’s only an hour.

In four weeks on August 29 the sun will be setting at 7:34 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 40 minutes and 56 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 96 and 74 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 58 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 2018.

Looking ahead, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is a month away, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 2 months and Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 9 weeks.

Buck Mountain

July 26, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 66 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. It’s a bit sticky earlier this evening but certainly not oppressive. Now comfortable.

It’s been quite a day but I survived unharmed and saw some beautiful country. I like taking the blue highways but twice this day I got cut off and had to slam on the brakes.๐Ÿ’ฅI also almost got hit in the parking lot at Quaker Lake but fortunately not. I was parked at the time with my engine off so it wouldn’t have been my fault but it could have required a police report ๐Ÿ‘ฎ and body work had it happened. Stupid other kid backing out. I was reminded by Waze that Sugar Run Road was closed so I ended up dwtouring by taking a scenic drive through Allegany State Park – I was going to say I’ve never been through it in the summer – but that’s not true I drove that way in 2017 due to another Penna DOT detour on US 6 and making a wrong turn. But that’s fine I wanted to buy some food for dinner – Then I got lost in Bradford Penna – first looking for a grocery store and then later looking for the road back to the Kinzua Overlook – PA 59. Oh, and I had to back track a bit on Cuba, NY when I realized the old road that I was using to Shunpiking the Southern Tier Expressway was a dead end.

It was a good day though, first starting out at Klipnocky Road in Gas Springs State Forest then taking down the hammock and alternating between the Southern Tier Expressway and other routes that I could find for Shunpiking. ๐Ÿš™ It’s so easy to wile away the hours in the hammock. But I have to admit having phone access most of my trip I’ve not necessarily used my time for productive uses, e.g. reading ๐Ÿ“–. It’s so easy to scroll through Facebook and look at stupid memes. Some neat little historic towns I passed through. I snapped a few quick pictures on the dash cam but I admit I probably should have stopped a bit more and took in the streetscape ๐Ÿ“น before it’s gone or visited more of the local businesses like the Cuba Cheese Store. ๐Ÿ•

I was running a little bit early so I drove up to Little Rock City. ๐Ÿ“ท Not much has changed since I was there in 2013 during my autumn trip out there. ๐ŸThe past two off year trips I’ve shunned Western NY for West Virginia.

I also drove down to Allegany State Park to swim, ๐ŸŠ and the new bath house ๐Ÿ›€ was a dank and smelly as it was last time. The ventilation and drainage of the new bath house had never been right and I miss the vines and natural woods of the old one – the new one looks like standard suburban McMansion crap and the bathrooms while new are gross. The water was cold and not as clear in Quaker Lake as I remembered but that’s probably comparing it to Lake Erie whose water is particularly bad this year with severe blue green algea. ๐Ÿธ But the country driving out there was so beautiful.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 31st. That said, I expect it’s always a bit cooler here up in the Allegheny Mountains. Maximum dew point of 60 at 9pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1977.

I’m fairly happy with the campsite I have here at the Allegheny National Forest. The Allegheny woods with the mountain laurel and broad canopy above is so much different than the Adirondacks. It’s really unfortunate it’s such a long trip from Albany ๐Ÿ—ป because it’s such beautiful country. I guess for folks who live in Buffalo, it’s just a weekend trip and hardly special but I guess the same can be said about me and the Adirondacks, especially Piseco Powley Road.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ˜ with 20% illuminated. The moon will rise at 1:28 am. I’m not staying up for it tomorrow. The New Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of t-storms. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 6:03 am with the first light at 5:31 am, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 55 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 10th. So be it, August is just around the corner. Maximum dew point of 60 at 5pm. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1955.

Tomorrow I’m heading back east to outside of Wellsboro where I have a camping permit for the night. โ›บ I want to stop at a few places on the way east, then explore the Pine Creek Gorge. ๐Ÿšถ I’m considering visiting the lumber museum, ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ which is right on the way back and may also check out the completed block glass plaza in the little town whose name escapes me but used to a manufacturing hub for most of glass blocks used in buildings across the country. Maybe Port Allegheny? I’m glad at any rate I’ll be able to break up the long drive home into multiple days as I like to poke around on the back roads and not go too far in any one day๐Ÿš™ . At any rate, tomorrow is the last full day of vacation, Sunday by mid morning the focus will be on heading east on Route 6 then making a bee line for Albany on Interstate 88, so I can get home and unpacked and ready for a certain busy week at work. But I’m fine, it’s been a long time away from home and I’m starting grow tired of the travel.

In four weeks on August 23 the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 40 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is a month away, Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 5 weeks and Friday the 13th ๐Ÿ‘ฟ is in 7 weeks.

Vanderwhacker Wild Forest

July 23, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. Cool and clear for a change.

It was a decent day but cloudier and grayer then I would have hoped for part of the day. โ˜ Did get a nice hike along the Burnt Hill, Gorge and Interlaken Trails although parts were muddy. Swimming wasn’t that great with the cloudy skies but so be it. ๐ŸŠ I spent about two hours at the Watkins Glen library working on the blog and Save the Pine Bush stuff.

I’m thinking about tomorrow staying on more night in the Finger Lakes but not at this campsite as you can see from the pictures, the driveway is a muddy mess. ๐ŸฝI figure I should let the land recover and if I do stay in the Finger Lakes another night, it will be at a different site. I’m not worried about getting my big jacked up truck stuck but I don’t want to tear it up anymore.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 56 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Yeap, Labor Day Weekend will come and go before you know it. Maximum dew point of 56 at 10pm. Light northwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was sticky. It got down to 75 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1985.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter Moon with 49% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:03 am. ๐ŸŒ—The moon will set at 12:57 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tonight with mostly clear skies. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:51 am with the first light at 5:18 am, which is 57 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 11am. Light northwest wind becoming north 6 to 11 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1941.

I’m really not sure about tomorrow. If it’s beautiful I’m all about staying another day in the Finger Lakes.๐Ÿ’ญ But if I wake up tomorrow and it doesn’t look good for swimming then I’ll head west. 72 degrees is pretty cold in my book for swimming especially if it’s cloudy and stormy like today. Often it seems like the wonderful forecasts are over predictions. ๐Ÿ˜Although I wouldn’t mind seeing a good sunset tomorrow in the Finger Lakes like I could see if I camped on Matthew’s Hill. Beautiful sunsets up there, especially in the pasture to say nothing of the views of the stars โœจ and the wineries amd farms across Seneca Lake. That campsite didn’t look to muddy when I was up there yesterday, it’s not flooded like two years ago. Otherwise I could go out to one of the state forests in Allegany County tomorrow like I had planned and then Thursday drive up to Letchworth State Park and then maybe camp Thursday night at McCarthy Hill / Rock City in Salamanca and do the Allegany State Park Friday and Pine Creek Gorge on Saturday. On my way out, I’ll probably also hit up the Sugar Hill Firetower not because the views are that great but it’s pretty much on the way out to Hammondsport and all points west. ๐Ÿ‘“

In four weeks on August 20 the sun will be setting at 8:00 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 60 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1937.

I lost my deodorant that I just replaced on Saturday so I bought more at Walmart today when I returned cans and bought groceries. I felt so stinky hiking without deodorant. I also bought milk ๐Ÿฎ and ice and a summer sausage that appealed to me. No ice cream today as I was thinking I could get ice cream tomorrow ๐Ÿฆif I stayed anl extra day in the Finger Lakes.

Looking ahead, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 4 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 8 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 10 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 67 weeks.

I’m feeling remarkably tired so I don’t know how much longer I’ll stay up.
