November 20, 2017 8 AM Update
Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Thursday marks Thanksgiving with five weeks from today to Christmas. Mostly cloudy and 28 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 13 mph. The current wind chill is 17. First dusting of snow has fallen in Delmar. None though on the roads and as far as I can tell they haven’t been salted. The skies will clear around 8 pm.
Today will have a chance of snow showers before noon, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high of 40 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal. West wind 13 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow and mist in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 1991. 3.4 inches of snow fell back in 1961.
The sun will set at 4:28 pm with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for partly cloudy conditions and 39 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 54 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low of 29 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal. Southwest wind 7 to 9 mph becoming south after midnight. In 2016, we had light snow. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1879.
Looking forward to getting up to the Adirondacks this weekend. Should be a nice weekend assuming we don’t get freezing rain. The nights are long this time of year but they can still be fun. I will probably pitch a tent because then I use the warmer in the tent in the morning.
In recent years, I’ve become less of a fan of the winter months but I guess they are just part of living in Upstate NY. I tell myself I will eventually head to warmer climates where I can have more freedom, but the truth is I kind of enjoy the awfulness that is New York. Albany is definitely an interesting place, and the work arounds to survive in Upstate NY aren’t that bad.
Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Christmas when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. Just think of all that colorful wrapping paper, cardboard boxes and Styrofoam bricks for rednecks to burn! Always accentuate the positive. On that day in 2016, we had drizzle, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 43 and 21 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.
