Carlton Hill Multiple Use Area (MUA), located in the northwestern Cattaraugus Highlands of the Appalachian Plateau, covers 2,500 acres of land that once served as farmland. This area now features a mix of open fields and small woodlots, creating a range of habitats for various wildlife species.
The landscape is characterized by flat-topped hills and deep valleys. Many farms here were abandoned in the 1920s and 1930s due to poor soil and steep terrain, challenges that were intensified during the Great Depression. The DEC started acquiring this land in 1961 under the Park and Recreation Land Acquisition Bond Act of 1960.
