I think it’s great that persumative Democratic nominee Joe Biden has picked a black woman to be be his running mate, as we need more diversity in government, somebody who can tackle problems for a new viewpoint. Relying exclusively on elderly white men to make our nation’s decisions doesn’t only suppress other voices, it loses the significant benefits of diversity of thought and debate on the best way to move forward.
I just wish Biden had selected somebody a little bit more outside the box, a true progressive rather than a tough on crime former District Attorney who has repeatedly spoken out against Medicare for All. People crave authenticity, they want somebody who is interesting and a voice for change, not somebody who is boring and in the mainstream of politics. The democrats can’t be the party of the boring but competent in their run against the colorful but incompetent administration of Trump. Color always wins the news cycle. It gains viewership and sells ads.
Harris does seem competent if not dispassionate advocate for progressive change. Maybe that’s what our country needs now when the incumbent president, Donald Trump has proven to be incredibly inept. I do worry she will alienate progressives like myself, and may have problems with the African American community based on the many people she has placed beyond bars and denied justice to in her career. But people change and maybe she can recoup her standing – but be sure the Republicans will use her career as a tough on crime DA against her.
I think a Biden – Harris ticket will be good for our country and a vast improvement over the incompetent incumbent. But I sure hope Congress and the Courts doesn’t give the administration a free ride and holds the next administration to a high standard. I hope she can prove to be an asset this November and we can move beyond the disastrous years of the Trump administration.
