Good Evening – July 31, 2021
Good evening! Final night in the Finger Lakes. π
There was a thunderstorm β way to the north so the sunset was a bust but overall a pretty nice relaxed day. But I can’t say the same thing about the peanut butter cup sundae π₯ that I’m eating from the Glen Dairy Bar.
Mostly cloudy β and 67 degrees at the Clute Park. Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees. To bad the sunset was such a bummer.
Today I spent the bulk of the day hiking in Connecticut Hill Wildlife Management Area. πΆπ» A lot of rough back woods roads and a lot of wildlife to see. π¦ πΈ The forest demonstration area was pretty neat to check out for differences of birds and wildlife. All the roads were very rough, I ended up locking it into 4×4 low and on the steepest and roughest of hills I locked it in first gear, β which maxes put at 5 mph. A lot of very steep roads there which are badly eroded from the rain. There was this one vey steep hill on Todd Road where the kayak πΆ barely cleared a downed tree – the trees was so low the CB antenna hit. I was sure I was going to have to back up the hill or take the kayak off but I went slow and cleared.
As planned I kayaked πΆ in Bad Indian Swamp but only got 3/4 mile from the old Airport Road along the drainage canal and part of a channel before it got to shallow. π¦ Lots of birds including multiple great blue herons and ones I need to look up in Merlin. Also hiked around a bit of the nature trail including crossing that crazy looking bridge. Bugs were real bad π so I didn’t stay long. It’s fine, time was getting late.
I got a delicious peanut butter cup sundae π§at the Glen Dairy Bar and watched the sunset or lack thereof along Seneca Lake. Now it’s getting dark and time to head back to camp. βΊ I want to have dinner and then may hike to Foster Pond especially if it clears out later. π
I am already thinking about tomorrow. π€ I am leaning towards taking down camp slowly in the morning and then going to Taughanock State Park until the rain picks up in the afternoon.βοΈ I’m leaning towards taking NY 26 from Whitney Point to Pine Woods and US 20 the rest of the way home, that way I can see a new route π along the Otselic River and avoid driving 65 mph in the rain with the kayak on the roof along Interstate 88. I like taking new roads whenever I can. πΊ
