January 28, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 2 pm. 🌡️ Going to be kind of cool tomorrow it seems. Or actually closer to seasonable.

Marconi and cheese this dinner with broccoli and tomato chunks in it. 🍲 A pretty good dinner. Fixed the hole in the pocket of my overcoat – it had allowed a few times for my keys 🔑 to slip into the back pocket. Neighbors are home 🏡 tonight and it’s a fairly nice night so I skipped riding the exercise bike in favor of the evening walk. 🚶 Nice walk, ice free and not too cold or wet. Finished up reading 📖 Murdock’s World about the FoxMedia empire. 📰

I’m trying to devote at least 45 minutes a night to reading as I know it’s as important to a healthy life πŸ™„ as riding the exercise bike. I got to work more on limiting my portion sizes for food 🐽but I always try to have a lot of veggies with each meal 🌽 and fruit in morning. 🍒 I don’t have snacks at home besides fruit and for beverages it’s flavored water or apple juice. 🍏

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 26 degrees at 2am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 16th. Maximum wind chill around 15 at 5am; Northwest wind around 9 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 5 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1925.

The Snow ❄ Moon is on Sunday, February 9. The darkest hour is at 12:09 am, followed by dawn at 6:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:15 am in the east-southeast (115Β°) and last for 3 minutes and 12 seconds. Sunrise is 54 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:57 am with sun in the east-southeast (122Β°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 15 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 33 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 6th. Northwest wind around 9 mph. That wind might make it feel cold. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 29 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 2002. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1990.❄

So yeah, tomorrow is my birthday 🎂. One’s 37 birthday is hardly a milestones, it’s just one day closer to owning my own land and eventually retiring 🏡. But that’s still many years off but a focus on a long term goal is good as it encourages me to save 💰and consume less and make less waste. β™» This next year I plan to stay the course and continue to expand my knowledge and my horizons as I look toward a better tomorrow. New and exciting choices and changes will come to my life by the end of the upcoming year.

In four weeks on February 25 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (258Β°) at 5:39 pm,🌄 which is 36 minutes and 22 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow showers, mostly cloudy and temperatures between 38 and 24 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 37 and 20 degrees. The record high of 70 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 is in 2 weeks, National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 3 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 7 weeks, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 2 months, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 10 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 14 weeks, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 21 weeks, Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 40 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 40 weeks.

Friends Of Bramley Mountain Fire Tower

Friends Of Bramley Mountain Fire Tower

The newly formed Friends of the Bramley Mountain Fire Tower group held its first meeting on the evening of January 6th at the O’Connor Hospital in Delhi. The Friends were formed to organize the reconstruction of the fire tower that was decommissioned by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation in 1970 and removed in 1975. The tower was purchased by Pete Clark, who meticulously stored the tower’s parts right down to the nuts and bolts in his barn. It is well preserved as a result. Three years ago Tom Clark, the current owner, approached the Catskill Mountain Club with an offer to allow the tower to be restored if the CMC could lead the effort. With the formation of the Friends group, the effort to raise funds and complete the resurrection of the tower has officially begun.

In 2008 the NYC Department of Environmental Protection acquired the Bramley Mountain parcel and in 2016 the DEP allowed the Catskill Mountain Club to build a trail to the summit. The trail has been very popular with the public, drawing over 1500 hikers a year, some of them from as far away as Europe and Africa. Now, with the support and cooperation of the Town of Delhi and of the DEP as well as widespread support in Bovina, Hamden, Kortright, Andes and other local communities, the CMC has formed the Friends of the Bramley Mountain Fire Tower to move the project to completion.

China’s Coronavirus Outbreak Reminds Me of the Irish Polio Epidemic I Survived – CounterPunch.org

China is responding to the spread of the coronavirus in Wuhan much as countries have always reacted to life-threatening epidemics. At every level of society and government, fear of death – or, more accurately, fear of being held responsible for death – drives decision-making, which is consequently often ill-judged.

Officials do not want to cause a panic – but then again, nor do they want to be accused of inaction, or of hiding dire truths about the health crisis (many people have become convinced that more people have been infected, have even died, than the authorities are admitting).

LOWVILLE — A trend in pro-Second Amendment activism nationwide that exists to varying degrees in 19 states has made its way to Lewis County, where a group of people organized through social media are moving fast to have their interests served.

Since Jan. 4, a Facebook page called “Lewis County and Towns 2A Sanctuary,” an offshoot of “Oneida County and Towns 2A Sanctuary,” has gained over 2,100 members and its founder, Lawrence Hoffert, has been reaching out to “like-minded people” throughout the county to right what they see as wrongs against the Second Amendment.

PAC Targets Upstate District Attorneys on Bail Reform

PAC Targets Upstate District Attorneys on Bail Reform

A national political action committee is targeting two Upstate district attorneys for their stance on New York's new bail rules.

The ads are being promoted on Facebook apparently funded by an organization called Real Justice PAC. The targets are the prosecutors in Erie and Albany counties, John Flynn and David Soares, who are both Democrats.

According to the PAC's website, its goals is to elect county prosecutors with platforms focused on ending discriminatory policing, ending cash bail, and rolling back practices that lead to mass incarceration. The digital ads accuse the DAs of leading the charge to roll back the state's elimination of cash bail for most crimes by "using fear-mongering tactics based on lies and racist rhetoric."
