Winter

I was really hoping to get out of town this weekend, but once again the winter weather has defeated me

I was really hoping to get out of town this weekend, but once again the winter weather has defeated me. 🌨

It looks like based on the forecast that Brookfield is getting a half inch of ice today and 7 1/2 inches of snow tomorrow, and it will have a low of negative 2 on Saturday. There is no way in hell I’m getting my truck back to even the Moscow Hill Horse Camp for an overnight and not getting stuck, even if I could off the road. Plus negative two is much too cold.

And then Johnsburg forecast for camping off NY 8 is even more of a joke. They’re getting a third of an inch of freezing rain plus 8 inches of snow tomorrow. That’s on top of the foot of snow they already have, so not much of a chance of parking anywhere along NY 8. And it’s going to be negative 11 degrees on Saturday night.

So I think I can safely cross off going camping this weekend. But alas, only 3 weeks to March and 10 weeks until April 15th. Before you know it, summer weekends up at Piseco-Powley Road will be back or so I tell myself.

Citizen science reveals salty findings – Outdoornews

f you take a freshwater fish and drop it into the ocean it will die pretty darned quick. At least the vast majority of them will – as will many of the insects, plants, plankton and most other things adapted to life in unsalted water.

So it only seems logical that putting salt into a freshwater lake or stream could be debilitating to the flora and fauna living in it. No one would do that, would they? No one other than highway departments across most of the world in towns and cities that experiences winter weather.

Punxsutawaney isn’t Seeing His Shadow As Much Nowadays

Punxsutawney Phil is seeing his shadow less these days compared to 30 years ago:

1887-1990: No Shadow 10%. (9 times – no shadow. 83 times – shadow, 10 times – no record, 1 shadow cast by war.)
1991-2020: No Shadow 30%. (9 times – no shadow. 21 times – shadow.)

Statistically, the average since 1887, is the Ground Hog doesn’t see his shadow 19% of the time. But if you look at the most recent 30 year average, you see the Ground Hog is much more likely (30%) to predict an early spring.

For a while I thought about going to Punxsutawney for Ground Hog Day

For a while I thought about going to Punxsutawney for Ground Hog Day… 🐻

But the truth is Ground Hog Day is in the middle of winter – literally – and kind of cold. There isn’t a lot of camping areas nearby so there is a good chance that I’d have to stay in a hotel and I hate staying indoors when I travel. It’s such an early morning, high on a steep hill that this morning was probably quite icy with the snow that came down. So I’m kind of glad I just watched the celebration on my phone, even though it would have been a perfect day to go down there, being a Sunday morning.
