August 11, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to September 🍎. Mostly sunny, hazy hot and humid and 83 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 11 am. πŸ˜“

Going to be another hot day today. Loaded up the kayak on the truck 🚚 but first I was hoping to spend the morning at the pool – but it looks closed today per the sign. ⛱️It was very breezy at camp this morning at 1,800 feet but less so at 475 ft at Watkins Glen. Hoping I can get parking at the boat launch – already filling up. πŸ…Ώ

Last night was pretty hot too. πŸ”₯No campfire last night and I used the fan in my truck cap for most of the night as even up here high on the backbone πŸ—» it was quite muggy and uncomfortable. Maybe nothing like a in the city but so be it. I gathered some wood though and tonight I’ll probably have a small fire if only because it’s been a few days.

The muffins 🍚 I got from Walmart yesterday with some cold coffee made for a pretty good breakfast. I also bought cereal πŸ₯£ yesterday but I’ll save that for a future day. Maybe tomorrow. I wanted a quick and easy breakfast as I wanted to make sure I got to the park 🏞 early so I’d get parking.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Mostly sunny and hot 🌞, with a high of 92 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

Hoping for better weather than yesterday, as it was so hot and humid yesterday morning. 😰 And then by the time I planned to swim πŸŠπŸ»β€β™‚οΈ there was that constant line of thunderstorms to the south. That’s why I am not going to hike early in the morning today. I was such a sweaty pig πŸ–yesterday and I only got five minutes in the pool due to thunderstorms. β›ˆ

If the pool doesn’t open today, πŸ›Ά I’ll head down to the boat launch. The water πŸ’¦ is relatively calm and will be fine in the canal and if I stick close to shore. If I can’t get parking at the boat launch, I’ll probably get some ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar 🍧 I might than go down to Cayon Point to fish 🐠 but that was more the plan tomorrow.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.7Β° from the due south horizon (-8.2Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:36 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:15 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 82 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 8pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

One of the worst things about being in the Finger Lakes is the winos 🍷 who are more preoccupied with finding the next winery to taste and they’re driving 🚘 slow and irregularly after doing tastings all day. They drive 25 mph in a 55 mph and slam on their brakes when they see a sign πŸ›‘ for the next watering hole πŸ•³. Almost slammed into one of them today.

Seneca County is infamous for the state’s highest fatality rate from DWI, drunk driving is a serious problem in wine country πŸ€ͺ although that’s not something that the economic development people like to talk about. I like taking 414 as it’s fast and doesn’t have any speed traps or small towns but the slow moving drivers who slam on their brakes when they see the next watering hole on the road is so obnoxious. πŸ’₯

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until September 🍎 when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:09 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies with q few rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.

The Banana Trick and Other Acts of Self-Checkout Thievery

The Banana Trick and Other Acts of Self-Checkout Thievery

How common are self-scanning scams? If anonymous online questionnaires are any indication, very common. When Voucher Codes Pro, a company that offers coupons to internet shoppers, surveyed 2,634 people, nearly 20 percent admitted to having stolen at the self-checkout in the past. More than half of those people said they gamed the system because detection by store security was unlikely. A 2015 study of self-checkouts with handheld scanners, conducted by criminologists at the University of Leicester, also found evidence of widespread theft. After auditing 1 million self-checkout transactions over the course of a year, totaling $21 million in sales, they found that nearly $850,000 worth of goods left the store without being scanned and paid for.

The Leicester researchers concluded that the ease of theft is likely inspiring people who might not otherwise steal to do so. Rather than walk into a store intending to take something, a shopper might, at the end of a trip, decide that a discount is in order. As one retail employee told the researchers, “People who traditionally don’t intend to steal [might realize that] … when I buy 20, I can get five for free.” The authors further proposed that retailers bore some blame for the problem. In their zeal to cut labor costs, the study said, supermarkets could be seen as having created “a crime-generating environment” that promotes profit “above social responsibility.”

While I think the scanners have gotten better, I know a few times I've gotten home and noticed things made it past the scanner and not on the receipt. Not usually intentionally, just the usual didn't ring up correctly. That said, it does seem like recently the self-checkout lines have gotten a bit more accurate.

Tinted windows are unnecessary in Upstate NY when you have a truck with tires that extend beyond the fenders.

I can’t see out the damn windows due to all the salt coating them. The wheels kick so much salt and sand up from the road.
