Acid Rainโ€™s Dirty Legacy

The acid rain control program, while fairly successful at cleaning up Adirondack Lakes has be largely unsuccessful at reducing the acidity of largely dead streams in heavily coal-fired generating portions of the country.

I wonder if the acid is coming from smoke stacks in these portions of country, or if it's more from acid mine run-off, run-off from coal waste disposal sites, and other non-air sources of pollution?

Twoย degrees:ย How the worldย failedย on climateย change

Climate change is a remarkably challenging issue ... fossil fuels are very convenient at generating a lot of energy upon demand, stored in a compact fashion. We've gotten pretty good at burning them efficiency and in a clean way with minimal conventional pollutants.

There isn't always an easy alternative, although further efficiency and renewables offer a lot of promise, if we adjust our technology towards them.

But it will take a lot more awareness of the problem, and probably human suffering before we move forward and start making those dramatic changes needed to adopt a renewable future.
