Insect Repellent Guide: Deet vs. Picardin | REI Expert Advice

It’s also worth noting that different repellents work on different bugs. Mosquitoes are the one pest all repellents are designed for, and many repellents are effective against ticks as well. Black flies and no-see-ums (aka midges, sandflies and biting gnats) aren’t a big disease risk, but are pests nonetheless. Repellents offer varying levels of protection against flies (many offer none at all). And finally, no repellent works against stinging insects. If you’re dealing with yellow jackets at home, then trap-style products will be your best option.

Bear spray can be difficult to purchase | News, Sports, Jobs – Adirondack Daily Enterprise

RAY BROOK β€” In the summer of 2018, there were dozens of bear-related incidents in the North Country, including a recurring campsite raider that was eventually euthanized by the state Department of Environmental Conservation. DEC advised campers and hikers that it may be prudent to purchase and carry bear spray to help defend oneself in the event of a bear encounter. But to the chagrin of many, bear spray is essentially illegal in New York. Simply put, New Yorkers are allowed, by law, to carry self-defense spray. However, sprays marketed as β€œbear spray” far exceed what state law allows.

The only thing not illegal in New York is illegal immigrants. That's kind of a cheesy pun, but there is a lot of truth to it. But then again, if you want to stay away from bears, keep out of the Adirondack villages and campgrounds, and head back to the wilderness. As we all know -- there are virtually no bears in the wilderness.

High-cat diet: urban coyotes feast on pets, study finds | Environment | The Guardian

It’s a common story in southern California, and one now backed up by research: a new study by the National Park Service has found that 20% of urban coyotes’ diets is made up of cats.

Once restricted to the western plains, coyote populations are surging in cities across the US. They are master adapters who have learned to survive in urban environments – a recent study found coyotes present in 96 out of 105 cities surveyed. But many communities are struggling to figure out new ways to deal with predators in their neighborhoods.

In Los Angeles there were 16 coyote attacks on humans in 2016, up from two in 2011. For small pets, the danger is even greater. Reports of coyotes attacking cats in the daytime – even in Hollywood – have popped up on social media. A neighborhood in Culver City recorded 40 pet deaths from coyotes in just six months last year. β€œCoyotes are the top – besides us – in urban landscapes,” says Justin Brown, a biologist for Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area who conducted the study.

Beaver breeding season is no spring picnic! β€” Furbearer Conservation

For the beaver (castor canadensis), spring announces the height of breeding season - when the cold nights give way to warmer days and courtship sounds the beginnings of a new baby beaver litter arriving by the month of June. While established mated pairs of beavers are busy solidifying the “next generation”, the pair’s two-year-old offspring are also commencing in new beginnings - like a new place to live at the behest of mom and dad. After getting “the boot” from the breeding pair to make room for a new litter, two-year-olds are driven out of the colony in late spring to establish new territories of their own. As this brings “new beginnings” for the beavers, it also inevitably brings new beginnings for mankind - in the form of heightened complaint calls for roaming beavers who’ve now inconveniently “set up shop” in the wrong parts of civilization.
