The Climate Prediction Center, the long-range forecasting arm of the National Weather Service, also says a warm summer is likely for Upstate New York – in fact, for the entire continental U.S. The center doesn’t forecast in degrees, but in percentages that the summer will be normal, above or below.

The odds of a warmer-than-normal summer in Upstate New York are up to 60%, the center said.

New York state climatologist Mark Wysocki said the Hudson Valley and Adirondacks have the best chance of being warmer than usual.

38 days until the start of the Memorial Day Weekend πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Fun fact, Memorial Day this year falls on the traditional, pre-National Monday Holiday Act (1970) day of May 30th. Back in the 1960s, Memorial Day often fell during the middle of the week. For example, Memorial Day ’68 was on a Thursday, and people had to go to work on the Friday after Memorial Day.

Beer, clams, sweet corn and breakfast sausage πŸ¦ͺ

Beer, clams, sweet corn and breakfast sausage πŸ¦ͺ

Kind of a real treat up here in the wilderness on a, hot summer day. Not sure I would want to eat at home – it’s kind of smelly but so delicious. The beer and clam juice just gets into the sausage and sweet corn is so good.

I do end up with a lot of smelly, organic garbage but at camp I have a hot fire and the clam shells and corn cobs burn up just fine. It’s kind of a mess but I keep camp clean and so far I haven’t had much of a problem with bears or wildlife. And I get a bit buzzed but I’m not planning on going anywhere I need to drive.

August

The final month of summer has arrived. It’s the warmest and most mature month, and meadows run their wildest. The nights are not as long as previous months, and while it’s often hot and humid in the day, the nights start to have little hints of a fall chill that’s certain to come next month.

August is the time of Altamont fair and many people’s vacations. It will be time of sitting out and soaking up the sun, of long days out in the canoe, and climbing mountains in the early morning. They’ll be nights sitting around the campfire drinking beer and whisky, watching flames as the burn towards the sky.

Swimming Hole

August can be a lazy month. The last of the summertime season, the last time we are laid back before our youth go to school, and before things get more serious at work as people’s vacations end. The heat makes some outdoor activities challenging, so we choose to lay back.

There will be plenty of warm days in September, but it won’t be as much summer as the month of August will be. It will be different. September will see many of the final harvests of the year, our society’s agricultural bounty, and the signs of fall. Much hope and sadness we enter that month.
