New York State

New York is a state in the Northeastern region of the United States. New York is the 27th-most extensive, the 3rd-most populous, and the 7th-most densely populated of the 50 United States. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, and by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border with Rhode Island east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Ontario to the west and north, and Quebec to the north. The state of New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City.

Franklin Falls Pond – Saranac River Campsites

This shows the campsites south-west of the Franklin Falls Pond/Reservoir. The Saranac River at this point is mostly navigable at higher level flows but it is shallow with lots of big boulders and some rapids. You will be hoping in out of your canoe. Most of the campsites can also be accessed by parking on the shoulder of the road and climbing down a steep bank to campsites along the shoreline.

Part of NY 8 has stainless steel guardrails that were painted brown when they were installed but have a lot of paint pealing off them. Most of the COR-TEN guard rails that once were common in the Adirondacks have been removed due to premature rusting.

Penn Yan, the name of the village, is said to have been contrived from the first syllables of "Pennsylvania" and "Yankee", as most of the early settlers were from Pennsylvania and New England; the latter were known as Yankees. It became a trading center for the agricultural county, with mills for lumber, buckwheat and other grains. The village was the western terminus of the former Crooked Lake Canal.
