Charles Baker State Forest

Charles Baker State Forest is named after the first District Forester who administered it. This property totals over 9,400 acres in southeast Madison County and makes up the core area for the Brookfield Trail System. This highly acclaimed horse and snowmobile trail system has over 130 miles of trails set throughout three state forests (Charles Baker State Forest, Brookfield Railroad State Forest, and Beaver Creek State Forest) that make up the Brookfield unit management area. January 16, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Martin Luther King Jr Day! πŸ‘‘ I think his birthday πŸŽ‚ was yesterday, so a happy belated birthday to him. Now when do we get a holiday to celebrate the life of Fred Hampton?

Mostly sunny and 15 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. β˜€ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Cold start to the morning but it’s warming up fast especially as the sun gets above the hills and into the holler. 🌑️

Cold enough this morning I started Big Red πŸ›» for a while to be safe and ensure the battery πŸ”‹ would be good by the time to leave. I don’t like idling my truck too much while camping due to oil consumption from idling and the famous 5.3 lifter tick but I didn’t want a dead starting battery either in the cold. She started right up though. It was in the single digits last night. I was a bit concerned as it appeared some voltage was bleeding through the relay last night to the accessory battery from the staring battery when I was idling the truck, not sure what that was about, but it didn’t cause any issues. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

M. L. King Day will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 32 degrees at 2pm. Typical for M.L.King Day. It’s the coldest week of winter on average though not this year. LA Nina and global warming from rednecks like me who drive big jacked up trucks and burn too much plastic. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light freezing rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1995. 15.1 inches of snow fell back in 1945.❄

Today I’m going to take down camp and maybe hike back to Tassell Hill from Chittenden Pond. β›° It’s the highest point in Oneida County and I’ve never been there before. Might also hike around Brookfield Creek loop and or Glimmerglass though I’ve done the later a few times. Then I want to head home relatively early and take a shower 🚿 and wash the salt and sand off Big Red πŸ›» and get ready for a regular session work day on Tuesday.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:12 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.2Β° from the due south horizon (-44.4Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 4:10 pm with the sun in the southwest (234Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:54 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:24 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:00 pm. At sunset, look for sunny skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 30 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌀, with a low of 19 degrees at 12am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 19th. Maximum wind chill around 20 at 5am; Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of -23 occurred back in 1971.

Yesterday I hiked about 12 miles around Charles Baker State Forest 🌲🌳 checking out some of the more remote campsites, deep back country horse 🐴 trails, Lost Pond, Evergreen Pond Lean To, Quaker Cemetery πŸͺ¦ and the Old Little Red School 🏫 House, a one room school house that’s now somebody’s residence. I was surprised 🀨 I ran into more people than I expected in the woods.

While not currently a state holiday, next Monday is National Cheese Lovers Day πŸ§€ when the sun will be setting at 5:04 pm with dusk at 5:33 pm. Nobody can be opposed to that. Plus soon I won’t be walking home from work in the dark. πŸ”¦ On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny skies, a few snow showers and temperatures between 24 and 11 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1906.

Truck Trail 3

Walking Truck Trail 3 yesterday in a winter wonderland. I could have driven it but I like walking 🚢 and I didn't want to slide off it.

January 15, 2023 9 AM Update

Good morning! Made it what is normally the coldest ❄ part of the year and I’m out camping πŸ• in Madison County. What can I say, I’m kind of nuts πŸ₯œ and I like burning shit πŸ”₯ and spending time out in the country where things are real. 🚜 For a while last night that fire was rip roaring and that smoke was black! Well it is Martin Luther King weekend. πŸ–€

Mostly cloudy and 13 degrees at the Moscow Hill Camping Area. ☁ There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. The current wind chill is 2. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at Tuesday around 10 am. 🌑️I’ll be home by then then.

I planned to leave by nine yesterday and started down the road and realized that I didn’t know where my hat and gloves 🧀 were which are kind of essential for winter camping. So I ended up heading home and searching πŸ”Ž for a half hour until I realized that I stuck it in the cooler to carry it out.

Then I had to stop in Esperance for food and fuel. β›½ πŸ₯© The roads were just wet and salty all the way until I got out to Brookfield where they were snow covered. They don’t have a bare pavement policy in Madison County though the roads did have plenty of sand on them. I got to camp β›Ί on Saturday around 12:30 which left plenty of time to gather and chop wood for the night ahead πŸ”₯ and set up camp and listen to a podcast then go for an hour walk in a beautifully snow 🌨 covered woods before dusk. πŸŒ† And cook some sausages up for lunch. 🌭

Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny ☁ β˜€ , with a high of 27 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal. North wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had mist in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.❄

I’ll believe it when I see it for the sun, β˜€ so far this morning has been pretty cool and gray. I’d like some sun, preferably by midday to top off the battery bank πŸ”‹. The weatherman promised sun for today but I’m not that hopeful with the skies so gray.

Today I have planned out a ten mile hike around the state forest, 🐴 hiking the horse trails which should be well frozen this time of year. In the summer they can be quite swampy from the horse hooves churning things up but things are well cold and frozen today.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:12 pm with sun having an altitude of 26Β° from the due south horizon (-44.5Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 4:09 pm with the sun in the southwest (234Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:53 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 5:23 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:59 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 24 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 8 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 10 at 5am; North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light freezing rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1971.

Going to be a cold night πŸ”‹ I may need to start my truck up to be safe before bed. πŸ› But once I’m under the covers I should be good. But first I plan to have a big ol fire πŸ”₯ just like I had last night.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until 40th Birthday πŸŽ‰ when the sun will be setting at 5:11 pm with dusk at 5:40 pm. On that day in 2022, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 14 and 0 degrees. Maybe I’ll go camping then too. β›Ί LOL πŸ˜‚. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 54 back in 2002.

Happy New Years from Camp

Complete with the Guy Lombardo record and probably a covpyright strike, but gawd I don't care because fireworks are fun.
