The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.
The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.
The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.
The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.
A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.
That’s the best way to describe it. Maybe not so much if you are a turkey. The weekend is more marginal but not as wet as originally thought but now more clouds and less showers. I’m considering going to the Adirondacks but it depends on how cold and wet Friday is.

Decided to leave around day break for a hike out to Five Rivers. π¦ Frosty morning but it’s not expected to last. Already warming up. Discovered the start of the Fisher Trail is the same distance from home as hiking the roads πΆ to the Discovery Center but with sidewalks and not the narrow shoulders of NY 443.
I want to try to hike at least 10 miles today π¦ before the turkey feast at my parents house so I’ll probably also hike down Meads Lane to Van Dyke, and then later up Bennett Hill which is on the way to the folks house. Not a real clear day but it definitely was frosty start to the morning. Then turkey time with my sister, niece and parents. πͺ
I was told Thanksgiving dinner was from 2-3 pm π½ so I better not take too long on Bennett Hill today. Hate to get there at 2:59 pm and only like have a minute to eat dinner. πΆ I would be sad if the dog got all my Thanksgiving dinner.

Good morning! What day is it? The Day Before Thanksgiving, of course. π¦
Cool and quiet this morning as I watch the sun is rising as a great big fire ball into red skies.
Partly sunny and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. π‘οΈ
Colder start this morning π then yesterday but not bad for late November. Quiet as the schools are closed and a lot of people have today off from work. I am working part of the day downtown though may leave early for the holiday.
Out for the morning walk at 6:45 AM. πΆβοΈ I think that’s a good time to walk. Not too dark but also it’s in Delmar versus the plaza. I end up getting in more steps that way. π£
