Rattlesnake Hill WMA

The Rattlesnake Hill Wildlife Management Area is a 5,100 acre upland tract, situated approximately eight miles west of Dansville, New York. Roughly two-thirds of the area lies in southern Livingston County, while the remaining third lies in northern Allegany County. The tract was purchased in the 1930’s under the Federal Resettlement Administration and is one of several such areas turned over to DEC for development as a wildlife management area.

The area is appropriately named after the Timber Rattlesnake, which may be occasionally found in the more remote sections of the “Hill”.

The area offers an interesting blend of upland habitats such as mature woodland, overgrown fields, conifer plantations, old growth apple orchards and open meadows.

The area is inhabited by a variety of game species and is open to public hunting. The white-tailed deer, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, grey squirrel, cottontail rabbit and woodcock are found on the area. An occasional snowshoe hare may be observed adjacent to thick creek bottom brush or conifer plantation habitats.

A number of small marsh units have been developed and provide limited hunting for waterfowl. Some of the area’s furbearing species such as mink, beaver and raccoon may be occasionally viewed at these marsh units.

Happy Summer 2023! 🏖

A few more days until the latest sunset of the year. But by the weekend the heat, humidity and thunderstorms of summer will arrive.

Good morning! Partly cloudy and 57 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ⛅ Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. The air quality index is 44. Summer arrives at 10:58 AM and the muggy weather starts at Friday around 11 am.

I think today will be an oatmeal with blueberries 🥣 kind of morning with cold black coffee ☕. Another session day and I’m running late though not as late as yesterday, as my colleagues in the Senate are posting pictures of vacation on Lake George.

But first let’s kick off summer. Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 11th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Southeast wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 70 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1938.

Donning my politician’s suit 🕴️I kicked off Tuesday although I didn’t end up catching a bus 🚍 until the late local. Making eggs for breakfast 🍳 followed by preparing a lunch and dinner and ironing my shirt and tie and showering I was running late. Plus I was in such a haze after the long weekend with memories of Piseco-Powley Road high on my brain 🧠.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.8° from the due south horizon – highest of the year. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297°). 📸 The sunset is in the borthwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 28 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 14 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west (277°) at an altitude of 25° from the horizon, 252,228 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of one second over yesterday.

I left work around 6 o’clock last night but the bus was running almost a half hour late 🚍 so I didn’t get home until nearly seven. Rice, lentils, kale, mushrooms 🍄 for dinner last night with some hot sauce. Also some white beans I cooked up yesterday. I was kind of moving slowly yesterday, tired after the weekend that was but I did go down to the park 🏞 for a while for a walk and did 6.8 miles for the day. 👣

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌌, with a low of 53 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 1st. Maximum dew point of 56 at 9pm. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1940.

As is to be expected, humidity arrives with the summer. Clouds and thunderstorms with the mug-o-meter kicking up some oppressive numbers for the weekend. ⛈ Saturday, a chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Maximum dew point of 70 at 10am. Sunday, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Maximum dew point of 70 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

With summer starting to today, there are 2 weeks until Hottest Time of the Year 😅 when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain showers, humid, partly cloudy and temperatures between 74 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1919.

Roaring Brook

You may leave here for five days in space – but when you return, it’s the same old place 🗻

Tuesday after the Long Weekend that I extended for a few days on ol Piseco-Powley. Not much has changed both up in the wilderness and from listening to the morning news. They’re just vamping for time, but then aren’t we all. There are summer days spent at Potholers and the rest of year.

Good morning! It’s cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁️ Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. The air quality is index is a good 28. The skies will clear around 9 am.

I guess there is no Week at a Glance 🧑🏻‍💼but it’s a, session day today and tomorrow so after breakfast and showering, i need to put on my suit and tie and head off to work. 📧 My email didn’t seem like in a rush to sync last night and I didn’t push it until this morning to refresh. Really nothing happened when I was gone, the only thing changed less in the world over the weekend was Piseco-Powley Road since last summer. Actually, I think today was supposed to be wetter per last Thursdays forecast.

Today will be scattered showers between 1pm and 2pm, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 79 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 15th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 1pm. Light and variable wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon. Shrug 🤷‍♂️. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1953.

Left the Potholers around 5 pm yesterday 🏊 and headed home via NY 29 to NY 10 Canajoharie to NY 162 to US 20. NY 29 was closed heading into Johnstown and taking this other route home avoids most of the cities besides Canajoharie and let’s you see much of the Mohawk Valley Farm Country. 🚜 It was a nice long weekend, very quiet but like always ended too quickly and I wish it had been warmer out. ☀

This weekend I want to look some more at used bicycles 🚲 as I want to start soon riding my bike to work and it would be great for getting around at camp ⛺. I especially want a bicycle come summer vacation 🏊‍♂️ of which I haven’t decided yet on a week but I have to discuss with the other director and figure out which weeks the Watkins Glen race 🏎 track is dark.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Independence Day 🇺🇸 when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 84 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 104 back in 1911. I wonder if they will give us off the Monday before the 4th of July this year as a holiday. That might be a nice perk and a good excuse to get I town again. Maybe the Green Mountains this year? Just a thought.

Reflections

One year ago tonight, was the day after Primary Day 2020, and I was camping up at Horseshoe Lake, doing remote work during the pandemic, and decided to do a hike up Lows Ledge on the night before my 3-night stay limit expired and I had to move on to a different campsite

Two years ago tonight, was the day after Primary Day 2020, and I was camping up at Horseshoe Lake, doing remote work during the pandemic, and decided to do a hike up Lows Ledge on the night before my 3-night stay limit expired and I had to move on to a different campsite. It was a nice, still night where I met not a single person on the trail, and it was clear and crisp weather with wonderful views of the lands below.

Summer Evening In Adirondacks

Proponents are calling for closing off the public lands because of over use… 🌲🌲 🏞🌳🐦 🕊 🦆 🦌

Proponents are calling for closing off the public lands because of over use… 🌲🌲 🏞🌳🐦 🕊 🦆 🦌

I believe the radical environmentalists who want to destroy our country are the greatest threat to public lands. We must fight back against those who want to lock them up and close them down and ban public use. Public lands belong to the public not the radicals!

We need multiple use lands and managed forests supported with funding by timber sales, oil and gas production and leased grazing rights. The philosophy should be greatest good for the greatest number over time, as public lands belong to the public.. We should adopt the philosophy of the Gifford Pichot and the US Forest Service.

Lately, the ideology of the radicals has been to find every thing in the forest preserve that is broken, every mud puddle, every filled up parking lot and put it on an 8×11 photograph and post it on the internet and create these reports that they send to the politicians insisting that public lands be closed down and that public access to limited or completely banned. Ignoring the fact that most of the public land isn’t shown on the frame.

If there is a problem with litter, then state should hire more people to remove litter and put out more garbage cans. It used by most parks had garbage cans, and they dumped the garbage in a gravel pit. Not every garbage pit is Love Canal. Is it really necessary for the state to haul every piece of back country litter two hundred miles to a designated landfill when for generations old cans and wrappers were buried in nearby sand burrow pits?

If trails are being worn out, then they should have more staff repairing trails, bring in more gravel, more rock, and make more hardened repairs. The state owns thousands of acres of land which can be used to provide rock, dirt and timber for improving state facilities. Build new trails and parking areas to spread out impacts.

The solution shouldn’t be closing off, locking up and hiring more jack booted thugs every time an area gets heavy use compared to the under-sized, under built infrastructure when the state has so much in natural resources that could be exploited for public benefit.

The weekend forecast keeps trending to rain 🌦️

Use it or loose it as it sometimes come down to vacation. It’s a three day weekend beyond the two I’m taking off. The solitude time away from the internet and radio news will be nice even if more of the weekend will be spent under the tarp by the heater then out swimming 🏊.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly cloudy ⛅ and 57 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. 🚶 There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am. Still looks pretty wet to the west.

Out walking 🚶 this morning, I am almost packed for camping 🏕, though I am waiting to load my kayak 🛶 as I don’t want it to fill with rain. While I need to unpack the Cream of Wheat 🌾 I’m thinking that will be breakfast 🥣 with some blueberries. Shower 🚿, double check my list 📃 and then hit the road around 8:30 – 9 o’clock. I want to get more fresh food 🍏 on the way up and some sparklers 🎇.

On this day in 1967, The People’s Republic of China tests its first hydrogen bomb 🐼/strong>𸰠. It would be one of the world’s few powers with access to the devestatingly powerful hydrogen bombs.

Closing Down Washington Avenue During the Daytime Makes a Lot of Sense

Last week, the Albany Police 👮closed down Washington Avenue between Dove Street and Eagle Street, ostensibly because of the Poor People’s Campaign protest as the Fort Orange Club, even though the protesters weren’t actually blocking the street.🙈

I liked how the street closure made it easy for pedestrians to cross the street, to get on with the business of the day, visit the bank, businesses and other state offices. 🏢It also seemed to reduce noise and air pollution.🚗🚌🚚 I can understand how the street closure was a pain for motorists and bus riders — it would have been a short walk to Lark or Eagle Street to catch the bus  — but it also made Downtown Albany more livable and enjoyable.🚶

I think the city should consider closing down Washington Avenue between Lark Street and Eagle Street during weekdays,😎 especially in the summer, when people are out and about getting lunch and crossing the road conducting their business.💼
