John Boyd Thacher State Park ๐Ÿ“

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Weather Update – February 26, 2022

Looks like today will be fairly cold but warming up ๐ŸŒž

The sun angle is relatively strong this time of year, so I don’t think it will remain cold for most of the day. Plus not too windy. Even the night shouldn’t be too bad, maybe a bit cold but it’s no longer January. Sunday look like the nicer of the two days, especially if I get out relatively early. I would like to do some skiing on Sunday.

Good Morning – February 26, 2022

Good morning! Happy Saturday. The weekend after the snowstorm ๐Ÿงค

After all the hype about Friday’s snow storm, we got like half a foot of snow, and by afternoon the roads were just salty and wet. I worked from home, and truth be told I haven’t been outside since Thursday, but it’s already rapidly fading away. With temperature above freezing most of the coming week I don’t expect much of it to last.

Mostly sunny and 6 degrees in Delmar, NY.  ๐ŸŒค Calm wind. There are 6 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Yesterday was the much hyped snow storm, ๐ŸŒจ that was more like whatever. I worked from home, so I guess I can’t have that much of an opinion, staying safely inside from the weather. If that hadn’t closed the Albany offices, I probably would have gone in even if other people worked remotely. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ป I just don’t like using too much bandwidth with my hotspot which only provides 5 gigs a month, with the ordinary $45 plan that I have. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

In the end, I’ve learned how to disable images in Firefox and other ways to save bandwidth, ๐Ÿ”Œ and do a lot of things on my phone, so I didn’t use much data. ๐Ÿง Plus the offices were officially closed, so it was a pretty quiet day at work outside of the ordinary Friday business. ๐Ÿข But I like my office, especially now that I have that swanky private, corner office with the brass lamp. ๐Ÿ›‹ No sofa, but several comfortable chairs for those wanting to visit.

I do need to go outside and clean off my truck, ๐Ÿ›ป which I’ve been avoiding doing as my snow shovel is broken. Fortunately though we didn’t get too much snow. โ„๏ธ I can probably brush it off my truck. ๐Ÿงน I should get a new shovel — the one I have now for 12 years is trash — it cracked and then the handle broke, but I hate buying new stuff. ๐ŸŽI will need one though if we get more snow, or I decide to go camping. As much as I hate to say, I do need to go to the transfer station to get rid of a lot of accumulated crap ๐Ÿ—‘ — no way in hell am I going to burn a plastic snow shovel in woods. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿ‘ƒ Maybe if I had acreage and a big pile of brush to burn, I’d feel differently.

I need to finish up my GIS class map ๐Ÿ—บ and make one more as I am supposed to submit two different maps with different features. It’s kind of fun, I learn new skills every week even if a lot of things are very basic.

I also want to try to get that bulb in my truck tail light. ๐Ÿ’ก It was kind of cool I found the bulb I need in my drawer. It seems like it will work.

Then maybe I’ll go down to Five Rivers. ๐Ÿฆ I don’t feel like driving so I won’t bring my skis, only hike out and there do some of the road hikes. I wonder how many birds I’ll see? They’lll probably be quite active after the cold and snow of yesterday. Sometimes I just like walking out to Five Rivers and watching nature. Then maybe Meads Lane to take in the scenic views and look at the cows. ๐Ÿฎ

Are greenie products good for the environment?

Are greenie products good for the environment? ๐ŸŒŽ

Like everything, it depends.

Sustainability is a popular thing these days. Marketing premium greenie products like solar farms and electric cars is all the rage. You can’t open social media without seeing their advertising. But in many cases, I’m really not sure if they are that good for the environment.

Computer viruses and worms haunt the internet. They worm their way into a system, replicate, and spread again. It’s a simple process—with devastating consequences. But there’s a whole industry of people that rose up to fight back. Craig Schmugar recalls how he and his team responded to MyDoom, one of the fastest-spreading worms ever. Dr. Nur Zincir-Heywood reveals the inner workings of viruses and worms, and how they draw their names from the world of biology. And security expert Mikko Hypponen shares advice on avoiding malware. But he also warns that we’re in an arms race against malware developers.

I am increasingly fed up with winter ๐ŸŒจ

I am increasingly fed up with winter ๐ŸŒจ

Today is a work at home day with the snow. I should be celebrating that I guess but it’s just so cold and snowy out, and I don’t really treasure working at home. I’d rather be downtown where it’s easier to get in my steps in and not dealing with yet another snow storm.

Weather Update – February 24, 2022

Well, the forecast is going to be below normal and cold but not that bad ๐ŸŒจ

It is coming up to the end of February, so one has to expect things will start moderating sooner then later. But first we might get at least one more snow storm in the new future, and that snow might last for a while, as it looks like next week will be relatively cool. Not a block buster storm, which is good because my snow shovel broke while I was camping. This weekend I will probably stay in town — as I just washed my truck — but maybe the following weekend I will camp and ski. Depends on how busy I am with work and the weather.
