John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
Watching the Independence Day Weekend Forecast Carefully ð
I am inclined to head out of town, but not if it’s cold and rainy. This past weekend would have been perfect, had I not gone out the previous weekend. Friday and Sunday look great, not so much Saturday. But at least relatively warm. A lot depends on when I can get out of the office on Friday, which in part depends on how long special session lasts on Thursday. At least it doesn’t seem likely that I will get soaked again later in the day and I will be able to get my steps in.

I totally got stuck in the heavy rain halfway down to the earlier express bus. Too late to turn back, wasn’t raining when I left home.
Heavy rain and 70 degrees in Albany, NY. ð§ïļ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ð. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 1 pm.
I don’t think I’ve gotten caught in such a heavy rain storm in a long time. â I checked the radar and decided to skip my morning walk ðķ outside and catch the earlier bus ð downtown to walk the Plaza before work but I had no indication that the skies would open up the way they did later on. I’m drying out now walking ðķ the Concourse inside but still I’m soaked despite the rain coat.
It’s not that we don’t need the rain. ð§ It has been a relatively dry season to round out the spring and early summer. â Just a lot of breezy low humidity days so far this year.
All weekend the ABS light stayed off on Big Red, ðŧ despite my effort to trigger it by taking it hard around a few curves and driving a dirt road. I don’t really give a rats ass about a dummy light ð, although I do want to address it if it means the stability control isn’t working or is an early sign the bearings are failing and the hub is going bad. But first I got to have an indicator light or new noise to be concerned. ðŊ
But maybe not so bad with that breeze. And then a respite come Monday. Warmer later in the week, and the long range suggests maybe not so great for Independence Day Weekend, though that could change.

Good morning! Going to be a hot one later on today. ð
I went out for my walk early today to beat the heat. Not bad at 6 AM, I was up around sunrise at 5:15 AM.
Mostly sunny and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. ð There is a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. ð. The dew point is 60 degrees.
Today’s plan to head back home after the walk ðâïļ sit by the fan and maybe go down to the library for a while. Head out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. Then maybe an evening walk, to ensure I can get my steps in for the day. ðĢ A swimming hole would be nice, but I don’t want to drive my truck too much before it’s repaired, if it was I now think is causing the ABS light to come on my truck.
I was doing some research on the ABS light on my truck, ðŧ and it’s a somewhat more of a priority after I found it’s likely the wheel bearing/hub on the opposite side that I had replaced on West Virginia trip that is going. Makes sense, it’s been somewhat noisy for some time now, and it’s a common issue on Chevy trucks — replace one wheel bearing and then the other side with a weaker speed senor kicks out error codes. Or more likely the bearing just needs to be replaced. I have noticed that bearing get progressively noisier, and even start to complain with the classic wheel bearing squeal when pushed too hard around the curves. Maybe it’s not that but I can hope.
I don’t anticipate it being that expensive, ð§ if it’s the same thing that happened on the other side of my truck. It’s just one unit, not a real expensive one, and doesn’t take a lot of time to repair. Is what it is, I’ll make an appointment come Monday. I want to avoid doing too many miles before it’s fixed. I can probably make it home from the Adirondacks with a bad wheel bearing and the wheel not falling off, but I don’t want to bother with a tow or a rental car or making a trip to god knows where to pick up my truck once it’s repaired.
I am not sure if I will be able to get out of town now for Independence Day Weekend ð but truth be told, with gas prices, I’m not that strongly thinking about heading out of town. I want to save my gas money for weekends that are exceptionally warm and sunny. Kind of like this weekend, although maybe a bit warmer still.
After a hot day cooled down nicely after dark. Clear and 75 degrees in Delmar, NY. ð Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. The air smells like silage and hay, a little bit muggy but not so oppressive. Hot inside still but I’ll fire up the fan and strip down in bed.
Just sitting out back looking at the fireflies ð and stars above. It would have been a nice weekend to get out of town but I made the most of it walking ðķ out to Five Rivers and around town, getting in 20,000 steps or ten miles in walking for the day.
Got down to the library ð and did some research for Save the Pine Bush and then came home, passed out in the heat, the woke up, did more research sitting by the fan then walked down to Elm Ave Park and watched the sunset ð.
Sipping on some cold water and ice cubes. ðĶ It’s a healthy drink and free, well the cost is included in my apartment except for the cost of electricity to make the ice cubes. I like apple juice ðĨĪ better but it does have a lot of sugar in it. I’ve really been trying to limit my sugar in take to avoid diabetes like my parents have.
I am glad I stayed in town because it’s just another opportunity to save money for my future. ðĩ I think a lot about my future and how things can be better if I continue to save and invest – while doing healthy things like walking a lot of steps and staying out of the mud and muck of politics. I have my views, and I’ll talk about them on the blog but I stay away from social media, rallies and protests. ðĪ I’ll do research and help causes out I care about but I’d rather stay behind the scenes. ð Kind of like work.
Money isn’t that big of an issue these days ð° but I often don’t have much laying around as I just want to invest whatever I can while continuing to learn new skills. I was looking today on See Through NY and I make the same as other Deputy Directors in my agency, and relatively speaking it’s good pay especially for Upstate. ðĨ My knowledge of GIS, Census data, R and python along with research into deeds and government databases isn’t just good for my job today and helping out saving the Pine Bush, it is developing skills for tomorrow. When the time comes to buy land, I will have a lot of advantages to knowing what I’m buying compared to a lot of people. I’m also learning a lot of valuable skills not just for my current job but also future ðŪ ones.
There are many that want to rush out ð and grab everything that is available today, blow a lot of money on fun. ðĪŠ But I’m willing to hold back in hope of a better tomorrow. It’s not that I won’t do anything fun this summer or any trips but especially in these inflationary times it’s best to hold back a bit, enjoy what is free and frugal locally without burning a lot of gas or blowing a lot of money. I know tomorrow will be better than today.
Today’s sunrise was at 5:17 am. The next time the sun will rise earlier then today ð is in 346 days on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
The average high for today is 82 degrees. ðĄ The next time it will be on average cooler then today is in 58 days on Monday, August 22 when the average temperature will be 81 degrees.
The highest point for the sun today will be 70.7° from the horizon at 12:59 pm. ð The next time the sun will be higher in the sky mid-day is in 358 days on Sunday, June 18.
Today has 15 hours and 53 minutes of daylight. âģ The next time the day will be longer then today is in 357 days on Saturday, June 17.
Today’s sunset will be at 8:39 pm. The next time the sun will set earlier then today ð is in 7 days on Saturday, July 2.
The average low for today is 60 degrees. ðĄ The next night it will be on average cooler then tonight is in 62 days on Friday, August 26 when the average temperature will be 59 degrees.
Then cooler next week. Pretty much the latest sunsets of the year then we will start to loose time in evening, which always comes so quickly. So is life in the northerly latitudes.
