John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Nice morning 🌅 not too hot and the sun is rising. Going to be a nice weekend though with work and inflation I’ve decided to stay in town. During these inflationary times you really have to pick and choose plus it’s a long drive for basically one full day at the Potholers, especially if I get up late up north. 🏊♂️
I am by no means giving up hope on next weekend though. ⛺ Maybe things will be calmer by then at work or I can work part of the day Friday remotely. That said, I’m kind of holding my get out of jail free card 💳 for the Friday before Labor Day Weekend and remote work from Spectulator.
The way I look at is that 2022 is kind of a bad hang over 🤮 from the fun and craziness that was 2020 and that next summer should be a lot more quiet, with hopefully lower gas prices and maybe a new car 🚙 or at least Big Red running better. Or maybe I’ll figure out something new to do then for fun. I’m tired 😴 of doing the same trips year after year.
I think it’s interesting that the NYS DEC has never had a standardized font for its signs. 🛣️
Upper case moderate weight Helvetica seems to be the most popular font, but they sometimes mix in lower case.
Older signs are Alternate (Franklin) Gothic or maybe something like FHWA Series A but they sometimes still use that. Sometimes they will patch a damaged or alternative Alternative Gothic sign with Helvetica.
Lately they’ve been using FHWA Series D with lower case and something that looks like a knockoff of NPS Rawlson.
There has been a general resistance of park agencies to use FHWA fonts, the NPS uses Rawlson and Clarendon, and while the forest service does use FHWA fonts but with they do use a stylized National Forest script logo.
More sun for the weekend and hotter for the weekend. It wouldn’t be a bad weekend to head out of town if I wasn’t so darn busy and gas prices weren’t high. Maybe I’ll change my mind, though I have stuff to do this evening and I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to pack. I guess there is always next week.

Foggy start to the day, though visibility is still okay locally. You can smell the tart smell of the silage in the air.

Yesterday afternoon was quite a stormy one, ⛈ but I missed the worse of it by deciding to work late and catch the later bus home. 🚍 For a while though that rain was pouring down hard on the window in the office 🏢.
Rain had let up 💧 by the time I caught the later bus home and drizzled with brief up ticks on and off so no evening walk, so I didn’t get my steps 👣 in and retired to bed by a little after eight 8⃣.
Early to bed meant early to rise ⏰ so I was up before six and out for my morning walk barely after the six o’clock alarm rang. 🚶 Once I get back I’ll do breakfast. 🥞
I was hoping to get out of town this weekend ⛺ but I just don’t see it happening with the work load and everything else going on. Plus with gas prices ⛽ still really high a two night trip, leaving after work on Friday doesn’t seem like a good option. It’s just hard to be somewhere without cell service 📱 with work. Schoharie is an option but even that’s an expensive option with gas prices.
Labor Day Weekend I may head up to the Spectulator area ⛺ as I have good service there and can always work down at the Spectulator Library. 🖥 I was thinking that would be the long weekend I could boil clams 🦪 and sweet corn 🌽, working remote that Friday before so I can ensure that I get a campsite with cell service.
Maybe we will get more rain later but I think we’re done ☁️
Hot come the weekend but fairly low humidity again. Not like early August but with September ahead, excessively hot days are increasingly unlikely. And with darkness coming earlier and earlier, it’s hard for the evenings to be so hot. Only a little over a month until calendar autumn – which very much is the real thing up north.
