John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
Then we get at least one more blast of August-like weather for the second half of the week into the weekend. I am undecided, I could head out of town but I probably won’t as I just got back from the Adirondacks on Monday. Plus with work I doubt I can get away from cell service for the weekend with work.

Got my steps in yesterday 👣 and I’m up early getting my steps in on the Plaza before work. It seems like lately Albany has had a growing problem with the homeless, you see more and more of them at the bus stop and at the Plaza sleeping abs leaving piles of debris.j A number of days the stairways to the Plaza has been closed due because homeless people have crapped there 💩 and the other day there was a very obvious prostitute 👗 sitting on the steps of the State Capitol. Just gross.
Really since the pandemic, 🏙 cities just seem like they have been going in the wrong direction. They just aren’t as clean, with more vandalism and graffiti everywhere, more dirt and pollution. Some people want to blame the partisans of the other side, but it seems like things are worse then were a few years back when cities were starting to turn the corner. Delmar is getting back to normal but it’s just Albany. Maybe I forgot how bad old Albany was during my time working from home and avoiding downtown during the pandemic.
I wanted to walk at six o’clock in Delmar, ⏰ but the mornings as so dark now that we are in September. Plus it’s kind of a gray day as the rain pulled out. But at least I got my steps in yesterday, and with walking the plaza today I should have my steps in.
Last night was a Save the Pine Bush Meeting over Zoom which I participated in then retired to bed early 🛌 as it was a dark and damp night, although not so wet that I couldn’t walk. Had Ziti for dinner. 🥘 It was good, enough to have tonight too or save for a day or two. I do need to go shopping relative soon but I can squeeze a few more nights out of the pantry until this weekend I am thinking. Or maybe at lunch time I could run up to the supermarket, to avoid a trip. ⛽ That said, gas prices have come down a fair bit.

Suddenly with the rain it feels like autumn but things are a heck of a lot greener. Too late though probably for the farmers but the fire risk is back down. Looks like Wednesday will also be cloudy and cool with some rain but not as much as today. Weekend is looking nice, but not with the oppressive humidity.

I won’t say it’s flood conditions 💦 but the good soaking rain is continuing after such a dry August. It’s probably too late for the corn 🌽 silage 🐮 or even me getting up to the Potholers with work before sticking a fork into the warm weather but so be it.
Except for Labor Day it was a pretty rain free weekend ☀ and my gear was taken down on Sunday night before bed so things didn’t get too wet. Maybe I should have packed more adventures into the weekend but it was humid and Sunday seemed like such a threat for violent thunderstorms by afternoon though they passed me by. The beer, clams, sweet corn were good.
Before bed tonight I plan to down take down the screen tent and flags and anything else that I don’t want wet. But hopefully before then the thousands of mosquitoes will disappear. They are bad with the heat and humidity tonight since dusk. But no rain today but it was hot.

I have to admit this weekend was a lot less inspired than I had imagined. ⛺ Maybe it was all the shrimp 🦐 and clams 🦪 and sweet corn 🌽 boiled and drank with beer. 🍻 Or the fact I ultimately decided against hiking Pillsbury to see the Firetower lighting because it wasn’t scheduled until 9 o’clock and would have made a very long night by the time I hiked down the mountain in two hours and drove a half hour over rough roads in pitch black.
Maybe it would have been a nice evening ✨ but it would have been a long very dark hike back – nearly three miles with Military Turnpike closed at Jessup River Road due to damage from the 2019 storm. Plus it’s such a rough road and Big Red’s suspension doesn’t do much to smooth out the bumps these days.
Instead I spent the bulk of the weekend around camp ⛺, with on Sunday doing a ten mile hike down Mud Pond Road and then the gated part that’s just a snowmobile trail. Some bird 🐦 hunters around, I saw a black bear 🐻 and some cubs along the road in a tree but it was pretty quiet. Not a lot of good views around the road but not a bad place for watching nature it was very quiet.
All weekend was remarkably hot ☀ which isn’t surprising as this campsite has minimal shade midday. Good for solar not good for staying cool. No rain there but just to the east it looks like there was a lot of thunderstorms ⛈. I reinflated my tube ⭕ which is fully patched now but did not end up driving down to the Jessup River to float because today I was sure by the time I got there it would be a roaring thunderstorms and yesterday after all those clams and shrimp in the beer I didn’t think driving was a good idea plus it gets dark so early this time of year. It’s only 8:30 and pitch black with the clouds tonight.
So instead I spent a lot of time reading 📖 a book about the algorithms and hardware that make up modern computers and then a lot of study from YouTube and various websites about Saga GIS and GRASS GIS and how I can integrate those advanced algorithms into my R Programming projects. Also there was just a lot of miscellaneous things I got reading about – and various work emails 📧 and projects needing addressing.
I didn’t think I would have a fire 🔥 tonight with the earlier forecast that called for rain ☔ but all we got was humidity. Had to get more firewood from the woods and didn’t save paper to start the fire. Last night was the best one when it came the stars ✨ though the moonlight made them fainter. Friday night I did a Zoom call with John Wolcott and Friends after which I waited until late then had a rip roaring fire until eleven or so. Had a lot of burnables to oxidize.
It’s been a fairly quiet weekend ☺️ but truth be told I really don’t enjoy camping like I once did. The beer 🍻 and unhealthy camp food isn’t as much fun as when I was younger. Plus the time goes by so fast and I have fewer and fewer new places to explore. I’ve camped at this same site at Perkins Clearing many times before.
As through November all weekends will be working weekends 🍂🍁 I may be back up here in three or four weekends to camp where I have cell service 📱 and remote work 💻. Maybe closer to Mason Lake so I can paddle. 🛶 In retrospect, if I had thought about it more I would have kayak that lake to see the Snowy Mountain Fire Tower on the night it was lit.
But tomorrow looks quite wet, 💦 so I will probably take camp down early, and head home early. Though maybe not a wash out. I was sure this afternoon and evening was going to a soaker and was going to head home today but that would have been a mistake – most of the day was nice but so humid. ☀
