John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
How fast those days go by. It will be 2023 before you know it. Next weekend is the long Columbus Day Weekend. Fall seems late this year but colors will pop with the cold expected tonight.
Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 47 degrees. The skies will clear around 8 am.
Out early for the morning walk 🚶 as thats the best way to get the steps in 👣 and this week I’ve been right on track. Not a half had morning today.
Based on the past few maps 🗺 I’ve been making, I think I’m really starting to master how to make attractive, easy to read maps in R. But I keep learning, studying the documentation and code. ggplot2 maps just tend to be a lot less cluttered with sensible defaults compared to what standard GIS programs can do. I also have been learning new techniques to deal with big datasets like using Apache Arrow and dbplyr which let’s you query a database with dplyr. Not against writing SQL but it is more error prone than dplyr.
At the same time I keep watching videos about buying land and homesteading. 🐐 It won’t happen tomorrow or even next year but I’m hopeful for a strong economic recovery over the next ten years and my ability to work hard make money 💵 and save. I feel like the world is falling apart and I must do what is right for me and protect myself from the growing government military and industrial complex. 📺 I am glad I’ve not been brain 🧠 washed by owning a television or having home internet. I don’t stream.
Next few days will be sunny and the cloudy for the weekend ⛅
Fairly typical for what you would expect in late September and even early October. Hoping for better weather come October to enjoy the autumn colors but it is always hard to tell and I’m usually busy with work most weekends lately. But maybe I can work remotely.
Today. Feels like …
October 7th.
A slight chance of showers between 11am and 3pm. Partly sunny.
Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. 🐫
The day with the fast let down as they say about camels. There are probably reasons Americans prefer Holsteins to camels.
Partly cloudy and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ Calm wind. The dew point is 50 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 am.
Out for the morning walk 🚶 and it’s still pretty dark and gray though getting bright now. The early walk makes it a lot easier to get my steps 👣 in especially if I don’t have time to walk at lunch and get steps in. And unlike closer to 7:30 traffic is still fairly light.
Yesterday was busy but also not that busy. 🏢 Seemed like for a few minutes things calmed down. Been doing a lot of research into Apache Arrow and Spark for working with large datasets while minimizing the amount of memory and cpu time to process such things. 🖥
Since it’s gotten cooler starting to see 🍂🍁 more color pop up which I am sure will be here for a short time before it’s gone. Like do many things in this world it seems. Heading into your forties is so wonderful and awful at the same time.
That said assuming decent weather ☀ Columbus Day Weekend should be nice once my truck is fixed. 🔧Gas prices have started to come back down locally ⛽ which should make traveling more affordable. I like the longer nights and I’m an early riser. 🐔 I might take a week off in November, the location to be decided. I do want to get to Caz at some point and Rennselearville State Forest is an easy choice in the off season.
Maybe some rain showers in there but I’m not expecting a lot of rain. Weekend still looks pretty good, I probably will do my big loop over Meads Lane to the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. I’m hoping for nice weather Columbus Day Weekend.

Partly cloudy and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃.
Made it to Tuesday. 🌄 Yesterday wasn’t too bad, I have my truck appointment for next Monday and in the meantime I’m not driving 🚘 Red lest I loose a wheel. I hate to keep dumping money into it but I don’t see an alternative with prices what they are with cars. And I don’t want a break down in remote country. 🐮 Plus I want to get at least another winter out of it with the deicing salt on the road before I throw it away.
The appointment is on Monday so I should be able to get away for Columbus Day Weekend 🍂. Autumn has been late this year so maybe there is a chance to get up to the Adirondacks one more time before the leaves have dropped or maybe I’m better off to do Burnt Rossman and the Western Catskills or Stoney Pond and Caz. ⛺ Not sure. Fuel prices ⛽ are coming down a lot and probably inflation is slowing with the hiking fed rate and stronger US dollar 💵.
It really is a good reason to plan more trips 🌲🌳assuming that we don’t get a ton of snow 🌨 too early in the autumn. That said, I am thinking increasingly about doing more winter trips to Rennselearville State Forest just because that road is plowed year round and there are good opportunities for winter camping and skiing 🎿 up there.
Pretty much typical for this time of year. Not too wet although showers are possible the next few days. The weekend doesn’t look too bad although I’m not planning on any major trips until I can get my truck looked at which I doubt will be before the weekend.

Kind of a gray and foggy day out today. Very quiet around the High School this morning as it’s closed for Yon Kippur. I don’t know much about that holiday except for it being the start of the 1973 fuel crisis which changed everything in America until it didn’t.
Mostly cloudy and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear around 6 pm.
Last week I didn’t do a very good job at getting my steps 👣 in. The mornings are so dark now and it was gray and rainy and I’ve been working late in the office 🏢 that is full of candy 🍬 and unhealthy stuff. Taking the earlier express bus 🚍 for walking 🚶 doesn’t work because it’s late so often and walking the Plaza is gross with all the homeless people who are kind of taking over the Plaza.
I am going to call this morning 🛠 about having an appointment made for Big Red to be repaired. 🛻 I’ve been noticing that something is loose in the suspension and I don’t want to find out what it is when I’m somehere in the wilderness 🌲 or a wheel falls off driving down the road at highway speed. Red turns eleven in two weeks but I don’t want to get a new vehicle before winter or until prices come down. Plus I don’t really know what I want to do after Red. Electric? Small sedan or truck?
My pantry is well stocked 🛒 so I’m good on that for now and I’m not sure if it’s going to be a nice weekend with the hurricane 🌀 heading up this way. I can always go for a walk to Five Rivers. I was kind of hoping to get north for the fall foliage 🍁 but it’s so late so I may wait. The best foliage locally is still a few weeks off.
I watch the stock market and bond market and just have to sigh. 📉 The truth is that both lower stock prices and bonds are to be expected with the fed rate rising. It means I’m getting a better price on new investments and growth will be steeper after the recession. Inflation will slow, gas prices will drop.
