John Boyd Thacher State Park

John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

School Budget Votes

Tomorrow is School Budget day, one of the few times of the year that ordinary citizens have the ability to accept or reject a proposed government spending plan. While normally you get to choose Democrats or Republicans in elections, school budget votes give the citizen the opportunity to vote for or against more spending.

It’s a refreshing change from normal elections when the choice of more or less government spending is only loosely correlated to who you vote for on the ballot.

That’s why I’ve not missed an election in over a decade.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. 🌄

The countdown to summer continues. Going to relatively mild today but certainly not summer like. I’m just waiting for black fly season to be done. And water temperatures to be a bit warmer.

Cloudy and 50 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☁ There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

Not so cold this morning. 🍃 Going to be pretty nice by afternoon. Too bad I’ll be stuck in the office 🏢 most of the day. Walked 9.2 miles yesterday and 12.3 Sunday. Lots of steps but it’s been nice. Didn’t do the twenty mile hike on Sunday but it was a busy weekend.

This morning I am reheating the queche I made up on Sunday 🍳 and froze. Took out a slice from the freezer last night, plan to add some kale, mushrooms, and tomatoes as apparently I need more of them then it already has. 🍅 As they say, the more fiber the better. And some carrot 🥕 slices after breakfast. Black coffee ☕ from reheated coffee grounds plus a little fresh coffee, as I’m trying to cut expenses with coffee being so expensive these days. Eggs 🥚 are a good all morning breakfast, especially blended with lots of fiber.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. West wind 8 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, and we had an thunderstorm ⛈ in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

Finished up the updated maps for Save the Pine Bush 🦋 kiosk yesterday at the Lupine Festival this Saturday. I reached out to Lynne about getting the rest of the material for the display. I like tabling, leading hikes, doing maps and research but not so much public hearings especially with the jackals in the press 📰 just looking to twist your words for speaking what you think. At this point in my life, I hate politics, I’m more focused on what is right for me.

Not a pay week this week 💸 but I think it’s a pretty three paycheck month. I’m doing my best to keep expenses down but it’s tough in these inflationary times we all live in. I’m planning on saving a little money this money in my savings account for the first time in years, as interest is up and I know some point in the future 🔮 I’ll have to replace Big Red.

No tax refund for me. 💵 Oh well, not a big one, I was planning on applying any of what I thought to be a $150 refund to next year’s taxes. Didn’t owe anything either. Somehow I made a math error in calculating the amount I was liable for. 🧮 My calculated income was right but I must have read the tax table wrong. I’ll go over my form with the reconciliation statement but there is nothing further for me to do. It’s so stupid to have to file 📂 taxes when the government already has the data on their computers.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.4° from the due south horizon (-4.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:31 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (297°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:12 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 15 seconds with dusk around 8:43 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:25 pm. At sunset, look out for a chance of rain 🌧 and temperatures around 69 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 4 seconds over yesterday.

School 🚸 budget vote today, I’ll probably go after the evening walk 🚶 as then I’ll avoid the crowds and morning traffic as the polls are open until 9 pm and I’m usually in bed 🛏 before then. School Board elections are more rigged then most but it’s the one chance you have to vote against government spending. I also should get milk 🥛 this evening which I keep avoiding because frankly I’ve gotten into drinking my coffee ☕ black.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 29th. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Sunday looks to the best day for the weekend. Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 69. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 49 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Primary Day 🗳️ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1953.

 Applachian Trail Crossing

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. 🤯

I’ve been doing this long enough that I know when give it a little gas and ease off the clutch I’ll be moving forward and before long be pulling that lever back into second and it will be Friday before you know it. That said I’m primarily thinking about Juneteenth weekend spent at the House Pond campsite swimming hole.

Sunny and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Calm wind. I don’t know it feels cold but I’m always cold these days now that I’ve lost some body fat with the lower R value. But it’s also good because fat in the body organs like your heart ♥ muscle 💪 is so bad. It can’t be that cold intolerant though as Saturday night slept in hammock with just a little blanket.

Regardless of what I might think of the weekend that was, it was a productive one 🔧. The tire is back on the truck, my pantry stocked, walked twelve miles yesterday including five miles on Cole Hill State Forest and seven miles out to Bender Mellon Preserve. Got the work that needed to be done 💻 from home. Hammock camped.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 73 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Light southwest wind becoming west 8 to 13 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became partly cloudy by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

I made the best tasting whole wheat pasta salad 🥗 yesterday with the kale and mackerel. Much more filling then traditional pasta salad with the empty carbohydrates and fat of white pasta and mayonnaise. Mackerel is high in omega 3 fats that more than enough replaces the need for mayonnaise and helps with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins and minerals, including those in the fiber and vitamin rich kale. I know eating kale is a yuppie thing but it’s remarkably nutritious and tasty. Plus I can mock Keto math that subtracts fiber from carbs but it’s impossible to question the benefits of fiber.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.2° from the due south horizon (-4.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:30 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290°). 📸

Not sure how late I’ll be stuck in the office 🏢 this week, but it should be a good week weather wise. ☀ Cool on Wednesday. Tomorrow I need to pick up my suit jackets at the dry cleaning before work, dry cleaning has gotten expensive these days. 🕴️ Leave my truck at the Delaware park and ride. Maybe after work stop at Hannaford and pick up a few missing groceries – so far no fat vanilla yogurt is the only thing on that list 📃 and that is more of a luxury then a necessity. I like a few times a week to drizzle yogurt on frozen fruit as a sugary treat after the evening walk, especially on hot days. 🚶 But I know the added sugar of the vanilla yogurt is rather bad even if I use it sparingly and a container typically last me a month before it’s used up and put in the garbage to be burnt. Lol.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (297°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:11 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 8:42 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 65 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 5 seconds over yesterday.

I am hoping to get home early enough, that I have time to walk down at the park. 🏃 It gets difficult this time of year, but maybe I’ll get some steps in at lunch time. I would like to have in at least 9 miles by the end of the day. Need to get to the bank 🏦 so I can have cash to pick up my suit jackets tomorrow. 🕴️

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. West wind 7 to 10 mph becoming southwest after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1980.

Showers this weekend ☔. But not a washout. Payback for the last two really nice weekends. Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 48 at 8pm. Might not be perfect 👌 for the Lupine Festival 🦋 but okay. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ when the sun will be setting at 8:30 pm with dusk at 9:03 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1925.

May 14, 2023 7 AM Update

Happy Mothers Day! 🌷

As ol Merle Haggard would say, there are two kinds of Mothers. I’ve been called a mother before but I’ve not had any kids.

Good morning! Partly sunny and 43 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest. 🌞 There is a north breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. ☃️

Kind of a cold start to the morning 🥶 sleeping in the hammock. I wish I had brought more blankets but I survived. I wanted to go as minimally as possible and it gave me an excuse to get up and going at day break like I normally do.

Went for a nice walk to start the day, 🚶 roughly five miles after taking down camp. Hiked some of the Long Path and the trail around the swamp. Had a small fire 🔥 last night, nothing major as I was wilderness camping and it was breezy though the flip side was there was an established fire pit there. Next time I go up there I’ll make sure to bring a chair as sitting on the stone I stacked wasn’t all that comfortable. No bugs but by morning it was pretty cold.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 59 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Going to be a cool day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

The plan is to have a nice pan 🍳 of eggs 🥚 when I get home with lots of spinach and feta cheese and then get my clothes 👚 unpacked from the wash yesterday, go to the car wash 🚿, get groceries, top of the tank in my truck, ⛽ put the tire back on my truck 🛻 and then maybe in the evening 🌃 go for a walk. 🚶 Maybe just the town park or Five Rivers though I was thinking about Norman’s Kill Falls or maybe the Rail Trail to the Bender Mellon Preserve. 🍉

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 66° from the due south horizon (-4.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:30 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290°). 📸

I saw at the trailhead 📄 somebody left a note about the passing of Forest Ranger Tom Edmunds. He used to patrol Burnt Rossman State Forest but I only met him once. I think he got transfered to Vermontville in the Northern Adirondacks a few years back. 🏋️ Just another reminder how short life can be and why it’s important to eat healthy and exercise.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (297°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:11 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 8:42 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 37 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

I’m going to keep that campsite ⛺ in mind for Memorial Day Weekend in case I decide to do a quick overnight. Probably stay to close to home that holiday weekend as it depends on how much work I have to do. Hammock Camping is easy especially for a quick overnight. Next weekend is the Lupine Festival 🦋 and the first week of June if it’s nice I’ll either do Schoharie or Charles Baker and truck camp, especially if I have my bicycle 🚲 up and running by then. Second week of June I’ll probably be exhausted from work but I want to go with dad to the Gas Up, third weekend is Juneteenth Weekend and want to do four or five days at Piseco-Powley, taking off the Friday before Juneteenth Weekend so I can get the House Pond Campsite and if it’s more than three nights go up to Powley Place on the Sunday / Monday night when I can enjoy it without neighbors.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until the Gas Up ⛽ 🚜 when the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.

May 13, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. 🌷

A most beautiful spring weekend! Mostly sunny ☀ and 65 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 48 degrees.

Got a bright and early start, 💻 doing the work I needed to get done starting at six o’clock this morning with a cup of coffee ☕ until a little after 8 am, sitting out back. I need the comp time so I can use it this summer for work, but also because the Committee Agendas are always a rush project and I didn’t want to work on them late into the evening on Friday. I’d rather go to bed 🛏 early and get up early. I’m kind of werid like that but I believe in early to bed early to rise.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 75 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 28th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 9am. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2004. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.❄

Walked out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐦 to start out my day, which was proceeded by a hike out along Meads Lane. There was an abandoned dead calf out there in the pasture but part of having livestock 🐮 is sometimes dead stock. It’s nature. 🏞 Later on this afternoon going to hike Bennett Hill and go out to see the folks. Not sure if I’m going to spend a night in the woods in the hammock, going to be fairly cold by morning.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.7° from the due south horizon (-5.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:28 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290°). 📸

The sunset is in the west-northwest (296°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:09 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 8:40 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:21 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 66 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 9 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 46 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. North wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1996.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Latest Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 86 and 61 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

 Along the Skanateles Turnpike

Would a special master be appointed should the US not raise it’s debt ceiling?

Would a special master be appointed should the Congress not raise the debt ceiling?

It’s a thought I’ve had.

If the politicians don’t want to come to an agreement, US debt holders could sue the federal government to ensure timely debt payment. They could have a judge a mandate the federal government make make bond and note-holders whole. If the federal government doesn’t have the funding, then a judge could instill a special master, like from academia to decide which programs should be cut and how to ensure all debt holders are made whole in a timely fashion.

I am convinced that politicians don’t want to make any tough decisions anymore, and are more likely to just punt the hard things like actual governing to the courts. While some legislators, especially liberals, might loathe giving up power to conservative-minded courts, it seems like most politicians are more focused on their re-election, and would rather punt the hard questions to the courts, so they can go back to passing message bills about abortion, trans-persons and guns so they have lots of red meat to bring back to the base back home. Maintaining a solid credit rating or even running the country takes a backseat to the latest ideological battle put forward by the politicians.

May 12, 2023 Morning

Shift it up into overdrive and enjoy the nice weather 🏖

Just watch out for the black flies and the bad drivers whose minds have already shifted to the weekend.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy ⛅ and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees.

Not such a cool morning for the walk 🚶 but then again it will be in eighties later on in the day. 11 ½ miles walked yesterday with similar hopes for today, assuming that I get out at lunchtime. I wish my bicycle 🚲 was finished it would be a nice day to ride to work.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 82 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 24th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 9am. No complaints about the humidity today. Light and variable wind becoming west 9 to 14 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1881. There was a dusting of snow in 2020.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.5° from the due south horizon (-5.3° vs. 6/21). The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:27 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (296°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:08 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:39 pm, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:19 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 12 seconds over yesterday.

In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2020.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 7am. There was a dusting of snow in 1953.❄

As I mentioned yesterday, I have this crazy 🤪 idea of spending Saturday night in a hammock in the wilderness though I’m not set on it as it’s going to be a busy weekend with work, getting things ready for the Pine Bush booth, the truck and other projects. Next weekend is thr Lupine Festival so that will be Saturday. 🦋 Following weekend is Memorial Day Weekend but between the black flies 🐜, work and crowds I doubt I’ll be heading anywhere.

Looking ahead to Sunday, cooler but mostly sunny, ☀ with a high near 66. North wind around 11 mph. Maximum dew point of 35 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until National Nude Day 👱 when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. I was thinking yesterday how much fun the old crocks are down at the swimming hole. 🏊‍♂️ On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995. That’s about as hot as it ever gets in Albany as I don’t think their thermometer at the airport can read three digits, or so it seems it hasn’t since 1953. But it’s an El Niño year so maybe the baby 🤱 boy will change his mind.
