John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
๐ดIf we wanted to save lives of bicyclists, we would ban them from city streets and require that they only ride on Interstate Highway with their 12 foot shoulders and limited access points. Based on crash data it’s much safer to ride a bicycle on the shoulder of a limited access highway than a city street. Cyclist deaths on limited access highways are exceptionally rare in the many states that permit such riding.ย ๐ด
๐ขToo often though we let emotions and perception of safety replace statistical evidence.ย ๐ข
1) Air conditioning on my truck has been blowing overly cold on Friday, I was shivering at times on the way out, had to turn it down.
2) Eat too much ice cream especially on Sunday with the large maple walnut Sunday, had an upset stomach, felt anxious and couldn’t get to sleep from the sugar as I don’t normally eat any food with added sugar.
3) Not getting enough sleep as I’m trying to pack too much in every day.
4) Ran out of propane after breakfast this morning. Too nice of a day to go to Ithaca to get propane so I’m just going to have to suck it up and cook the salmon, onions, potatoes, sweet corn and farm fresh big tomatoes on gbr fire tonight. And so eggs and coffee on charcoal tomorrow for breakfast. I was planning on going to Ithaca tomorrow anyways.
It looks like the second half of the week for vacation is going to be decent though not perfect. ๐
Today, paddle Seneca Lake it’s very calm, then Watkins Glen pool, ๐โโ๏ธ, Glen Dairy Bar, get water, maple syrup, propane and beer. Lake should be very calm!
Thursday, Trumansburg, swim in Cayuga Lake, ๐โโ๏ธ and Taughannock State Park, Black ๐ค Diamond ๐น Trail and maybe Ithaca if I can’t get propane in Watkins Glen today.
Friday, I might stay in camp or just do the short drive over to the Queen’s Castle ๐ฐ on the lake which is a free National Forest Boat Camp Ground on a point on Seneca Lake that is nice to just sit down by and Ride my bike around the National Forest and read. ๐
Weekend looks nice TBD, probably Ithaca on Sunday – maybe Robert Treman or kayak ๐ถ Cayuga Lake around the canal and Ithaca area. Saturday who knows, maybe Sugar Hill bike and hike then Watkins Glen pool.

Maybe we are day past the official full moon but turning onto Potomac Road from Searsburg Road, the moon rise was most impressive and so large looming over the pasture lands. Not sure if it’s a super moon but it certainly was super from the angle I was viewing it high from the Hector Backbone looking down towards Cayuga Lake.
Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Mostly sunny and 62 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 53 degrees. Cool start to the morning, I got chilled through wearing shorts and t-shirt, had to get my hoodie on to warm up. The cold is delaying my start this morning but I want to leave fairly soon as today is the calmest forecasted day of the week and I want to go paddling ๐ถ and swimming ๐ on Seneca Lake before the wind picks up later.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 76 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 9am. South wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-5.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 7:48 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (295ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:58 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:39 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 29 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 12 seconds over yesterday.
Long day yesterday, I didn’t get back to camp โบ until nearly 9:15 pm as I was in Geneva until after 8 pm and stopped in search of clams, Greek yogurt and milk at Tops in Waterloo. ๐ช But still the sunset is pretty late in the Finger Lakes but by the time I was past Ovid heading into Lodi it was definitely approaching dusk. ๐ That said the open landscape helped a lot keeping things from being too dark as I drove back to camp. But regardless I was tired ๐ด. I was so fortunate to see last night’s moon rise.
Rode from Seneca Lake to Kueka Lake yesterday via the Kueka Outlet Trail. ๐ฒ Touched both lakes with the wheel of my bicycle. It’s a lot quicker of a ride then when I walked it. Poked around Dresden and Penn Yan for a while ๐ซ I was very impressed with the Downtown on Penn Yann, it was largely untouched by urban renewal ๐๏ธ and still had many vibrant small businesses and shops. ๐ฌ
I ended up driving ๐ back to Penn Yan after getting Frozen Custard ๐ฆat the Spotted Duck ๐ฆ because I decided I had to visit the Penn Yan old fashioned bulk candy shop. I was going to get fudge but ended up getting black chocolate ๐ซ peanut ๐ฅ brittle that I’m saving for a future day. That place is a throwback not many places like that anymore, especially on Main Street. Reminded me of the old Blue Churn in South Westerlo I used to go to as a kid before it burned down. Spotted duck blueberry Blue Fluer custard was good, the Carmelt caramel custard was amazing. ๐ฆ Maybe it’s vacation FOMO but who knows when I’ll ever get back to Penn Yan again.
The ice cream was wonderful ๐ฆ and the two scoups – duck egg ๐ฅ sized each, wasn’t too much but the sugar fueled a full out anxiety attack in my mind and kept me roaring with crazy ๐คช energy well into the evening though by 11 pm enough sugar burned off I was okay. Truth is I’ve been having a wonderful vacation โบ but every time I consume any quantity of non natural sugar I get so sick ๐คฎ. But I’ll probably get a small ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar again tonight and remember the crazy thoughts in my head are just that. But not a mega large dish ๐จlike on Sunday. Go for the quality not the portion. I don’t know if it’s my fear ๐ฑ of the calories and getting fat, knowing how bad sugar is for you, or something else but my mental health is so much better the farther I stay away from added sugar. I’m fine eating delicious fruit all day long ๐ ๐ ๐ but give me ice cream and a few minutes later I’m super wound up.
With all that energy, I drove up to Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, ๐โโ๏ธ hoping to get a swim in the lake and a shower ๐ฟ the later I did but I had forgotten they a few years back had replaced the life guarded beach ๐ with a kids splash pad due to the pollution on the lake from blue green algea. Hell of it is, this part of state has been cool and relatively dry so not a lot of water pollution this year compared to many years. But I also wangtted to do the Cayuga – Seneca Bike Path ๐ฒ from Geneva to Waterloo, as much to say I did it. And to use time up. ๐ฝ Not a lot of exciting view along it, some view of both the Old Erie Canal and the modern barge canal, lot of marshland, corn and soybean fields. Poked around Waterloo for a while ๐บ๐ธ and visited the Civil War monument. ๐ฆณ Ended up going to Tops in Waterloo on Mound Road, you know the one next to Seneca Meadows landfill and getting milk, plain non fat yogurt not Greek as they’re out, and a small two servings bag of salmon. Made it back to camp by nine o’clock, wasn’t super dark out at that point and had a fire ๐ฅ until eleven.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐, with a low of 60 degrees at 6am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 20th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8pm. South wind 7 to 14 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1976.
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 9 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ Then again it’s always cooler in the Finger Lakes compared to Albany records. Good for bike riding, maybe not so great for swimming ๐. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 59 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.
Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธwhen the sun will be setting at 7:46 pm with dusk at 8:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 90 and 66 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1953.
And I’m mad angry that Wally World in Watkins Glen didn’t have plain, non fat non sugar Greek yogurt that I ducking love. I’m going to Geneva after my bike ride on the Kueka Outlet Trail and I’m hoping after visiting Seneca Lake State Park and riding the Geneva – Waterloo towpath trail and maybe a quick swim I can get Greek yogurt in Geneva as I need that do badly with all the fresh fruit I bought today.
But in the mean time I’m getting ice cream at the Spotted Duck which better be good! And I’m burning daylight. I better get rolling again!
โThey say that all good things must end some day. Autumn leaves must fall.โ – Summer Song, Chad and Jeremy
Today starts the first weekend of August, the final full month of summer. We very well may have some hot and balmy days well into September, but the reality is the very short season known as summer is rapidly fading into history. Those delightfully long summer days with their balmy heat are rapidly starting to fade into the rear mirror. Itโs not say that we wonโt have hot and humid summer days in August, but the reality is hottest weather on average, is well behind us.
The days are rapidly getting shorter. The longest day, with dusk not occurring until well after 9 PM is now just history, gone soon after the calendar officially said summer. Now every day gets shorter โ maybe only a few minutes each day, but its still fading away quickly. Now that Iโm done with grade school and college, the significance of Labor Day weekend, in a few weeks, is not as big as it might have been in years past. But still the tyranny of the calendar can not be overcome โ summer will be overcome by fall then quickly winter in a matter of weeks.
Peak color will overtake Moose River Plains three weeks after Labor Day. The highest peaks of the Adirondacks will see falls beauty even quicker. Fall in lower elevations comes a little later โ maybe mid-October, but even those dates are not that far away. Those colors are like the yellow on a traffic light, warning us all that winter is not far around the corner. Indeed, by the time we see fallโs beauty, it may very well dip into being pretty cold.
I like fall, and I am sure many of you do too. But itโs coming much too fast, as it always does. Please, get out and enjoy Summer 2023, before itโs too late. There will be future summers, but there will never be another Summer 2023 in our lifetimes. We all will be a year older next summer, and the we all will have changed, regardless what pretend to do.
Honest, I’m trying to do better on the sleep thing. I was asleep by 10 pm last night, after I drove home from Cayuga Lake in Ithaca it was straight to bed. Plus I wanted to get started early today, as I plan to head to Dresden then bike to Penn Yann on the Kueka Outlet Rail Trail, poke around Penn Yann for a while. Then maybe Sugar Hill then Watkins Glen pool. Like if I have time, lol. Or whatever hits my fancy, I will need to get a few groceries later.
Good morning! HappyTuesday. ๐ Mostly sunny and 53 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 53 degrees. Fog ๐ซ over Seneca Lake I can see from the backbone.
Decided to set my alarm โฐ to catch the sunrise but by the time I made it to Searsburg Road I saw the sun had partially beat me. Regardless I got close to eight 8โฃ hours of solid sleep ๐ด last night and the sun was just starting over the horizon. Still a good early start to the morning. Lots of coffee โ this morning plus cream of wheat with chea seeds for added fiber ๐ฑ, some lemon ๐ and stevia for sweetness plus walnuts and non fat Greek yogurt. Yum.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 69 degrees at 4pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8am. Light and variable wind becoming north 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1933. Not this year, lol. ๐
How fast time comes and goes on vacation but there is much more to do. Dresden – Penn Yann today โต and then maybe kayaking ๐ถ and fishing ๐ฃ on Seneca Lake tomorrow, paddling up to Hector Point as it’s expected to be calm. Swimming in Cayuga Lake Thursday I’m thinking ๐ญ as it will be warmer, maybe the Black Diamond Trail from Ithaca to the Taughannock Gorge. Maybe get clams tonight. ๐ฆช I concede probably best just to wait for my Labor Day Weekend trip or a Piseco-Powley long weekend trip for the clams but you know what’s on my mind.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-5.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 7:49 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (296ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ Moon in the east-southeast (120ยฐ) at an altitude of 0ยฐ from the horizon, 226,453 miles away. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:41 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 31 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 11 seconds over yesterday.
Busy day yesterday, ๐ฒ starting at Stewart Park ๐ heading up to Ithaca Falls and spending the bulk of the day exploring the gorge through the historic Forest Home ๐ก and Beebe Pond ๐ฆ and then ultimately spending many hours in the Cornell Botanical Gardens. Hell of it is I ended up riding past the dairy bar and it was still open ๐ฅค but I didn’t realize until I was past it. The ride down Buffalo Street ๐ in Ithaca was a blast, my bike rotators were so hot from the braking. University ๐ Ave over Canachilla Creek didn’t offer much in views but riding along the Cayuga Waterfront Trail from NY 96 to the end at other end of Stewart Park was nice. Those suspension bridges ๐ the trail crosses are neat, and the size of the Ithaca Farmers market building is impressive. I wonder when they are open, I could stop by and stock up. And the sunset ๐ was great.
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 51 degrees at 6am. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 19th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming south around 6 mph after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1976.
Cool this weekend with temperatures running 10 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11am. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 60 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees. Very low humidity and sunny. Should be a great weekend once we get past the โ rain and clouds on Friday.
One month ๐ from now will be September ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:43 pm with dusk at 8:11 pm. About fifteenth minutes later then Albany. Enjoy summer before it’s gone as Labor Day will be a memory by then and the kiddos ๐ง back to school ๐ธ.
