John Boyd Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains. The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over 25 additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
Rode 40 miles on Blackie on Saturday, after taking the Nature Bus to the Thacher Park Overlook, visiting Warner's Lake, Thompson's Lake, High Point and Hang Gliders Cliff, then riding down to ice cream parlor on NY 85, Five Rivers, Meads Road and then home. It was a fun day, especially flying down New Salem Hill at 35 MPH on a Mountain Bike which is mad fast..
There have been several stories lately about how the US Supreme Court is an ethics cesspool with no one disciplining the court or ensuring that the court’s own ethical standards are followed. Some of it is wishful thinking on the part of the left that sheer embarrassment for the court’s bad behavior will cause justices to resign, allowing President Biden to appoint a liberal majority, though far more likely is the left and left-wing media is prepping the public for impeachment proceedings against one or more conservative members of the court for their ethical malfeasance should the Democrats take back the house in 2024.
The thing about it is it’s one thing to impeachment of a Supreme Court justice might increase embarrassment of the justice and encourage enactment new federal ethics laws for the Supreme Court but it’s not likely to lead to removal of any justices. It takes 2/3rds majority of the US Senate to remove a Supreme Court justice and it’s unlikely to happen with the Republicans likely to hold their noses and enough of them to vote against impeachment. Moreover, based on the likely states up for a election this year and demographic trends making red states redder, if anything the Senate is likely to go Republican next cycle.
Ultimately, the US Supreme Court impeachment fantasy is likely just to delegimitize the institution further without much change to it’s make up. Yet it might encourage justices to act more ethically and create stronger ethics standards even if enforcement remains a high bar due to seperation of powers and the high bar of impeachment.
It wasn’t bad down by the river yesterday for the work picnic with the breeze though it was hot both over the charcoal pits and the sweet corn station I set up with all that boiling beer.
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Mostly cloudy and 67 degrees in Delmar. β A lot of its just fog π« that will burn off. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am.
Out for the morning walk πΆ. Got an early enough start to beat the craziness around the high school πΈ though it’s tough to get out early with the mornings being so dark. Lady I passed by the school bus garage says I’ve lost so much weight, though certainly not from the picnic yesterday – I was stuffed though most of the things I stuffed my face with fruits and vegetables though I did have a hamburger π but skipped the cheese and condements. It’s fine I’ll burn it off. Part of it is I’m wearing a pair of the old large shorts this morning as I wore them yesterday to the picnic as it was casual and I wanted to stay cool. That said, not riding the bike to work π³ as I need to bring my laptop back into the office. I do plan on walking down to the express bus π and if it’s not raining β do an evening walk too.
I got some canned π₯« pumpkin π and pie spice to make pumpkin pancakes π₯ this morning using ground oatmeal, bananas π and the afformentioned items. I took home a lot of fresh left over fruit from the picnic that I refroze so I didn’t need any more frozen fruit π« at least until next week. I can stop and get fruit next week when bicycle π² commuting along with chia seeds as I’m finally out end they’re good in pancakes and cream of wheat.
Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, partly sunny π§, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 4pm. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2015.
After the picnic I went for a three mile walk at Peebles Island State Park, π¦ where I managed to avoid any thunderstorms and saw the herd of Peebles Island deer. It was a bit close, I could see the bolts of lightening βοΈ over Cohoes. Did 15,000 steps or 7.5 miles for the day but no bike riding. π» It’s good I waited for a while before leaving the park as I had a bit of a buzz by the end of the picnic though I mostly just had diet soda with a lot of ice and only a splash π¦ from the keg, π’ but I kind of smelled of beer π after cooking all that corn π½ over the pot of boiling beer and salt, splashing more beer on the grilled corn to keep it fresh before people got it. Messy but delicious. π
Went over an visited with Linda, π§π» the late John Wolcott’s wife and looked over some of his old clothes. She gave me some nice fitting things, as John got a lot of new and lightly worn clothing after the fire a few years back. Definitely besides the thrift store finds π, what I got from my dad and John I should be good with my thinner profile bar buying jeans π and some work clothes come the winter. It was nice to spend some time with her, it has to be lonely since her husband passed. I’ll have to make time this autumnπ again.
All night I’ve been super gassy π² I think due to the chickpeas I used for the crust of the eggs I made up yesterday plus frying π³ some chickpeas up with apples and bananas for dessert π°. Plus the beans I cooked up for the picnic, all that sweet corn, and veggies I reached for at the picnic. π½ I’m sure today after I go to a more normal diet and stay away from the chickpeas I’ll be good. I got a rolling pin yesterday and want to experiment now with simple wraps made from whole wheat πΎ flour and water – and maybe some spinach. Nothing extra, nothing fancy, just fried in olive oil or baked up.
Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy π§, with a low of 67 degrees at 6am. 12 degrees above normal. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1938.
Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy π¦, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 31st. Maximum dew point of 70 at 2pm. Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1959.
Going to take the Nature Bus π up to Thacher Park π and ride Blackie π΅, read π and do the hammock thing all day. 9:40 the bus leaves Slingerlands and 6:20 is the last bus home. π‘ I could ride down the hill, it’s probably a lot of fun but it gets dark pretty early this time of year and I’m sure after a full day out in the heat and humidity I’ll be tired π΄.
Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. β High near 77. North wind around 6 mph becoming southeast in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 69 at 12pm. Company picnic day, I’m hoping for not a washout. Going to be hot but it should be relatively cool down by the river, in the shade.
Good morning! Happy Thursday. Fog π« nd 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around noontime. π Won’t be quite as hot for the weekend but still very muggy. I guess the mildew needs one more chance to attack the walls in my apartment.
Kiddos are heading back to school πΈ and while I tried to get out early for the walk πΆ it was kind of dark out and I wanted to start the pot of beans to bring to the picnic along with the chickpeas I had soaking and now are boiling for hummus this weekend. π§βπ³ I’m working from home this morning and then I’ll get sweet corn π½ at Stanton’s around noon time before heading to the picnic. π§Ί I might also get some canteloupe as I want some more good things to have to eat at the picnic and it’s inexpensive and what doesn’t go at the picnic I can bring home and eat. π I’m just worried about having enough good and healthy options at the picnic.

A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1945.
It should be a nice day but hot. π° That said, the river breeze will be nice. I’m going up to visit and spend some time with Linda this evening – John Wolcott’s wife – as she has some old clothes for me to look at and I’m sure it’s tough with her husband’s passing. A lot of her old friends came to visit I’m sure for John and I don’t want her to feel totally cut off though the facility she lives in has a lot of good programs but it must be lonely. π§π» Plus she has air conditioning there and by the time I get home it will be much cooler.
Yesterday I reached out to my web hosting provider πΈto drop the nycowboy.org domain which I haven’t used for years but I couldn’t delete myself as it was the primary hosting domain. But now I can drop it and won’t need to pay for it’s renewal come late October. I decided to renew my web host but it’s gotten expensive with inflation but in the grand scheme of things it’s not that expensive.
Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly cloudy βοΈ , with a low of 68 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees above normal. Last night I decided to cook up the asparagus πͺ΄ I got for camping π but didn’t use up and was starting to wilt. I cooked it up with peppers, pearl onions and using a can of mackerel π which turned out quite good. I tried to make chickpea flour with my food processor this morning but I couldn’t grind the dry chickpeas enough to create a fine flour. But I used it as a crust with the eggs this morning with a layer of pulverized tomatoes π , eggs π³, peppers, onions, garlic and parmesan cheese. Not too bad when finished off in the broiler.
Still quite unstable for the weekend. βοΈ Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Still hoping to get to Thacher Park this weekend on the Nature Bus π. And spend the day riding, assuming it’s not too wet. And reading π, relaxing in the hammock. It’s free and fun which is good with do many expenses lately. π΅ Sunday I hope to visit mom and dad, assuming they’re up for that.
Not so much heat and humidity at this hour but certainly later on. That said with the earlier sunsets and lower sun angle it cools off by evening but still rather sticky.
Good morning! What day is it? A dark start to the Hump Day, of course. Held off my morning walk for a while, because it was so dark. Fog π« and 69 degrees in Delmar, NY for the morning walk in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends next Tuesday around noontime. π Summer arrived in September.
Out walking this morning, though I held off a bit before it got a brighter out. π In the mean time I was down in my kitchen kneading some quick-rise dough with baking powder to make a crust to use with the eggs, spinach, and tomatoes. π Mom brought over a big basket of tomatoes, which not wanting them to go bad, I took several of the paste tomatoes ran them through the food processor, added Italian spices and roasted red pepper a bit of salt, cooked them down in a frying pan π₯ with onions, then fried up some eggs and put it on top with parmigiana cheese. Good breakfast. Wish I had made up more coffee rather then reheating what I have but time is getting late — and I’m drousey.
Going to ride Blackie to work again π΅βοΈ and then probably take the bus back home in the evening as it’s going to be another hot one. Burn some calories, save a buck thirty. It’s always nice going down to the gorge, and the Madison Avenue Hill isn’t that bad now I’ve done it a lot of times. π I figure in the evening, I’ll ride down to the old Union Station on Broadway, catch the express back home. It wouldn’t be pleasant paddling through the gorge, though neither will be the traffic riding on the bus this evening, but at least it will be air conditioned most likely and I’m not driving. π π π π π
Today will be sunny and hot β, with a high of 91 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 11am. Heat index values as high as 97. Yuck. Last night I got home after taking the bus π had a quick dinner, ran down to the library π and got the books I had on reserve, came home sat in bed next to the fan π read for a while and was asleep by nine. Tired and it was hot. I think this was the first really hot and humid day of the summer. In September, after Labor Day I know. Eat probably too much frozen mango and peaches but it made things nice and cool.

This weekend, while not looking all that great, might still be good for heading out to Thacher Park on the Nature Bus π for a while and doing some biking π΅βοΈ and reading π in the hammock, and enjoying things, assuming it’s not too wet. Certainly it’s easy and quick now with the more direct bus to Thacher Park and the bike. Plus it would be good to cut expenses at least this week, because it’s been an expensive few weeks with all the trips I’ve been doing plus the healthier food I’m putting into my body. π I wasn’t thrilled to hear that people expect gas prices to remain high all autumn — that said I”m still thinking about some kind of big autumn trip with lots of smaller ones, before snow flies. But if all else fails, there’s always Rensselearville State Forest for a weekend trip.
Looking ahead but maybe not forward to the darkness, are 3 weeks until More Night then Day π when the sun will be setting at 6:46 pm with dusk at 7:12 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 2017.
Technically it’s not Indian summer until we have a cool period though I guess you could call all of August really cool and Labor Day came and went, with all that is left is the work, the traffic and the bills in these inflationary times.
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly clear π and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. Sort of foggy, air has that taste of barnyard and grain on it. Soon to be silage time. There is a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. π. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends next Monday around 3 pm. π
Big pots of rice-lentils along with a pot of red kidney beans π² is simmering down on the stove, already had my first cup of coffee β and out for the morning walk πΆ. On my way home from the Adirondacks I stopped and stocked up my pantry π as there was a lot of missing things and I always like to have my pantry full of complete meals π΄ that provide all the nutriental essentials. π

Going to ride to work today π΅ but I expect to take the express bus π back home as it’s going to be a hot one. π° The ride downtown is a lot easier then the ride back, bar of course the Madison Avenue Hill. I won’t mind moving to the Erie Boulevard office π’ when it comes to the hill eventually. No idea when.

It was a nice Labor Day Weekend πΊπΈ even if all that’s left now is memories and labor. Backgrounds and cap grants need reviewing, emails replied to. Work picnic on Thursday, I’m going to see if I can work from home that morning so I can get sweet corn π½ to bring to the picnic and maybe cook up some beans with the maple syrup π and smoked salt.
Yesterday I rode the larger Spectulator Tree Farm bicycle π² loop βΏ around Elm Lake and across the Long Level, down Fly Creek Road to Old 8B. Added a slight addition of Austin Falls and Robbs Creek to the loop. Nice ride, took it slow on some of the hills but that’s rust low gear β is for. Then went for a brief swim πββοΈ at the Spectulator Beach π and then a paddle πΆ down the Sacandaga River until around 6 pm before changing out of my bathing suit, tying up the kayak and making the long slog home π‘.
