Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good morning! Happy Latest Sunset of the Year tonight ๐! Yeap it’s summer. I’ve traded in the suit and tie for a t shirt and shorts.๐ Climate change means they don’t require long pants at work during the summer. Next Monday is July ๐๐ฟ. Mostly sunny and 66 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. Another nice summer day, probably cruel and unusual punishment to be required to work today but the air conditioning is nice on the bus.
It was a nice weekend but much too short probably because I spent so much time late into the nights looking at the starry skies. ๐ It’s funny how when you stay up until 12:30 am each night and then spend half of the day swinging in the hammock drinking cold beer ๐ป that the day disappears. Paddling out on Lake Pleasant was quite nice yesterday, as it was incredibly calm and not a lot of power boat traffic and the water levels in the Sacandaga River were high enough for good paddling too. ๐ Water in Lake Pleasant in the beach though was pretty cold.
I went out Sunday evening to my parents house for Sunday dinner, and then stayed out overnight. ๐ฎ They made up tacos which were pretty good, despite not getting their until relatively late because I didn’t leave the Adirondacks quite on time. I did my wash out there, ๐ and slept over in my truck cap.
To test out the electrical system, I left the accessory system including the CB radio/phone entirely on the solar yesterday, and even plugged in my laptop this morning for a while to charge. I dropped the battery voltage down to about 12.5 volts or about 20% discharge, after running the laptop which shows you how much energy it can store.๐ Certainly had no problem with the load from the laptop. The solar had pulled the battery voltage up to 13.0 volts by the time I left for work, and I expect once the sun angle increases, it will be up to 14.5 volts and putting out over 60 watts of power. Not bad for a small system used for camp power. After seven years, I think I’ve worked out most of the kinks in the system.
Today will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 83 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 13th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am.ย This will probably be the most pleasant day of the week — more head and humidity is expected to bake in for the second half of the week. ๐ Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1943.
The sun will set at 8:37 pm with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ Latest sunset of the year. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 13 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight I would like to take apart the camp stove, ๐ณ and find out where the gas leak is in one of the burners, that melted a hole in surface of my my table. I am hoping it’s just a loose connection internally but if I have to replace a part, I’m sure I can get it online. I had noticed the gas leak one of the first time I went camping, but lately the leak has gotten to the point where there is a lot of flame and heat ๐ฅ is occurring under the stove, which isn’t good. Doesn’t look like it will be too hard to repair. The hole in the table — only the surface — also shouldn’t big of a deal to patch — I’m thinking something like Bondo for plastic work would work. I don’t care about the table looking nice, as it’s already scratched up, and if I wanted something fancy, I’d throw a table cloth on it, but I don’t want to have a hole in where it could collect water and mud.
Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 66 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 4am. Light southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1982.
I have a rather busy week ahead. Tuesday I am heading over to John Wolcott’s house ๐ then I have to vote.โ I hadn’t decided for sure who I want to vote for in the primary — for the most part I don’t care that much — but I still think I should stop by the library after going to John’s house to vote. At some point I also need to get to the store, because over the weekend I only bought cookies and paper towels when heading up to camp, and I need to get some bondo or other material to patch the hole in the table. Thursday I am leading the Save the Pine Bush hike.
This weekend’s forecast might be decent, but look for unstable weather on Saturday. โ Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees. Not sure if I’m going to head out of town, but if it turns out to be nice I may head out Mine Kill and spend an overnight camping. But first I want to fix the stove.
As previously noted, next Monday is July ๐๐ฟ when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny and temperatures between 97 and 72 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1913.
Good morning! Happy Sunday on this most beautiful day. Three weeks to National Nude Day ๐ฑ. Mostly sunny and 64 degrees at Perkins Clearing. There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐. The dew point is 46 degrees. Breezy for sure, but it’s nice in the hammock.
Slept into 8:30 after the most starry of nights ๐ then started to take down camp made up eggs for breakfast. Camp stove has a gas leak, it melted a hole in the table. I’m going to have to take apart the stove and fix the leak and patch the table. It’s such a nice day on the hammock but I can’t be lazy like yesterday and lay on it all day. Already producing over 50 watts through the solar panel.
Today will be sunny ๐, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 13th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 6pm. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1888.
The sun will set at 8:42 pm with dusk around 9:18 pm, which is 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 9 seconds over yesterday.
Once I get packed, I will head over to Spectator hike the nature trail and then go for a paddle on the Sacandaga River.๐ค Blustery today but hopefully the river itself won’t be too choppy. After padding I’ll probably try out the swimming beach to get washed up a bit before heading home. ๐
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. West wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1932.
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until National Nude Day ๐ฑ when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 88 and 72 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995.
Good evening! Partly clear and 56 degrees at Perkins Clearing Easement in the Adirondacks. ๐ Stars are nice but there is still a fair amount of clouds around and despite the open skies a lot of light pollution from Speculator and Lake Pleasant which are only three or four miles away. There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐. The dew point is 47 degrees. It actually is pretty cool when the breeze picks up. I have my hoodies and vest on, I might sit by the fire later again as it’s cool on the hammock but the stars โจ are pretty above although how I have the laser light aimed it’s getting in my eyes from time to time and that’s annoying.
Tonight will have patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly clear ๐, with a low of 47 degrees at 5am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 17th. Northwest wind around 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1940.
Today was a fairly lazy day, spending several hours in the hammock after sleeping in this morning. ๐ด I still can’t believe how much my lip swelled from the horse fly bite. ๐In an hour or so it was back to normal. Lots of horse flies and mosquitoes especially yesterday and a few black flies left. ๐ Not a good time of the year if you’re sensetive to bug bites. Did a bunch of reading ๐ and hiked two miles each way on Jessup River Road to the river of the same day and fished. With the solar and two accessory batteries I prefer to avoid driving as much as possible while at camp both to save fuel and because then I don’t have to worry if I want to have a few drinks. ๐ป
Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ with 62% illuminated with the moon rising at 12:20 am. I’ll probably be asleep by then. The moon will set up a tomorrow at 11:10 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Monday night with a chance of t-storms then chance of showers. The Buck Moon ๐ is on Monday, July 15th. Buck yeah. The sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:41 am, which is 16 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ Tonight will have 8 hours and 34 minutes of darkness, an increase of 8 seconds over last night.
Tomorrow will be sunny ๐, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 7am. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1888.
I’m going to paddle the Sacandaga River tomorrow from Speculator down to the rapids past the Kujamunk. ๐ค That’s a nice paddle and do some fishing ๐ฃ and maybe swim ๐ if it’s not too cold. I’m hoping the water won’t be too choppy with the wind, I’ll probably stay out of Lake Pleasant with the kayak. Then back to Albany to unpack and work on Monday although at least I won’t have to dress up and can take the express bus to work. ๐
In four weeks on July 20 the sun will be setting at 8:32 pm,๐ which is 10 minutes and 2 seconds earlier then tonight. That will be the first or second day of summer vacation most likely. In 2018 on that day, we had hot weather, sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 88 and 57 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 83 and 62 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1991.
This past week the solar panel on my truck generated 500 watt hours of power or a half kilowatt hour. ๐About 7 cents worth of electricity at home hooked to the grid. It would have generated more but the alternator topped off the batteries when driving and when there is no load on the system, the solar controller discards the excess power. ๐ I probably could leave the accessory batteries disconnected from the alternator – maybe I’ll do that on the way home although with the kayak on the roof of the truck and the CB radio and phone pulling 15 watts off the battery that isn’t ideal.
Looking ahead, Hottest Time of the Year ๐ is in 3 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐ is in 4 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Average High 70 ๐ is in 13 weeks and Autumn ๐ is in 3 months.
Stars โจ don’t become visible until late this time of year. ๐ Sitting next to the campfire, listening to the crickets and Santo and Jeremy Sleep Walk (a song from summer 60 years ago) waiting for it to get dark enough to dim the lights further and look up at the millions of stars above. Hear an occasional owl screeching in the distance. ๐
I put DEET on my face and arms to avoid getting bit by horse flies. I fell asleep listening to a podcast. A horse fly bit my lower left lip which is now swollen. Can’t ducking win.
Good evening! Happy First Night of Summer from the wilderness with a billion stars โจ above. Partly clear and 56 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. There is a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐. The dew point is 48 degrees. Even after building a rip roaring fire ๐ฅ, putting on my blaze orange hoodie and jeans it’s still pretty cool this evening.
It’s been a rough week at work but at least I had today after 7:30 AM off from work so I could take a nap at home then pack my stuff and head up to the Adirondacks. โบ I ended up deciding based on the forecast to visit the Speculator area and get my favorite campsite with brilliant views of the night sky, โจ especially with the modest temperatures, low humidity and clear skies expected over the weekend. Actually most of the work week looks good and I’ll be returning most days to the nine to five schedule rather than nine am to seven am schedule I worked yesterday. I got up here safely but my sleep rhythms are still screwed up, it’s almost midnight but I’m quite awake and lots of sun will be streaming into my truck at four am tomorrow. ๐ That said it’s nice to be back in the wilderness, it’s been a month now. June just has proven to be a very busy month for me plus I ended up making some big upgrades to my camp electric setup – which seems to work perfectly.
Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ค, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 26th. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1940. Should be great weather for sleeping.
Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ with 70% illuminated. The moon will set at 10:10 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Monday night with a chance of t-storms then chance of showers. The Buck Moon ๐ is on Monday, July 15th. The sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:40 am, which is 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ Tonight will have 8 hours and 34 minutes of darkness, an increase of 3 seconds over last night.
Tomorrow will be sunny ๐, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 19th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 7am. Northwest wind 9 to 16 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1954.
I was thinking about hiking down to the Miami River and doing some fishing ๐ฃ but looking at the map it’s a bit more of a walk than expected at two miles. I could drive. Or maybe I could hike Pillsbury Mountain – been eight years since I climbed that or better yet do something new and hike back to Pillsbury Lake in the West Canada Lake Wilderness. ๐ถ It’s good to explore new places, especially if I want this to be a summer to remember.
Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 75. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees. Planning to do some kayaking and fishing on Sunday down in Speculator.
