Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

August 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ! Well for me, it’s drill, baby drill into my cavity day then into work. I survived the first part, I think. It didn’t hurt much although my gum is still a bit num. Honestly getting bit on the lip by the deer fly at Moose River Plains was much more obnoxious. Next Monday is Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ†. Sunny and 76 degrees as I take the bus to work. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. The dew point is 54 degrees.

So many tooth cavity is patched. โ˜บ I was thinking this was my first filling but I think after the procedure ๐Ÿ’ญ I may have had a cavity filled as a child. ๐Ÿ‘ถ It didn’t hurt much, as I noted that deer fly bite on my lips ๐Ÿ’‹ at Moose River Plains or the previous week at Perkins Clearing was much worse.

The weekend that was wasn’t bad although it passed by much too quickly. โ›บ Pisceo Powley Road was nice, pretty quiet and I enjoyed my hike back to Big Alderbed. It was kind of nice to just hang out at camp and leave the truck parked on Saturday although I wish I had spent more time at the Potholers cooling off as they were the perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ temperature and water ๐Ÿ’ฆ flow. Maybe the air temperature could been a bit warmer up north but it’s hard to complain.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around July 26th. Kind of like those summer days gone past minus the humidity. Maximum dew point of 56 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. Should be nice a nice day. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1955.

The sun will set at 8:10 pm with dusk around 8:41 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 57 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

I need to go grocery shopping tonight although it might wait until tomorrow. I think I have something I can make for dinner and breakfast for the next few days but I probably should go shopping soon. ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿ– I’m going to need to get garbage bags as I used a lot of them up camping for the bucket shitter ๐Ÿ’ฉ and just because in the summer I take out the trash more. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 60 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 14th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6am. Light south wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1994.

I have kind of a busy week on tap. ๐Ÿ˜… More work on the Pine Bush stuff over the next few days ๐ŸŒฒplus I have stuff scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday I’ll be over at John Wolcott house. ๐Ÿ”Friday I might head out camping. I just see summer fading away so quickly as it’s already August.

Cool but definitely sunny and pleasant this weekend. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 57 at 7am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 79. Maximum dew point of 57 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Not sure what my weekend plans will be ๐Ÿ—ป but I think hiking might be fun in the cool and sunny weather. ๐Ÿšถ Maybe if I decide to head out of town, it will be down to the Western Catskills. Maybe do some of the Mine Kill pool ๐ŸŠ although it might be a bit cool for swimming.

I heard Dave Orapello from High School passed away. ๐Ÿ˜” He was always a kind of odd character, I used to hang out with him a lot in High School along with some of the aggies. ๐Ÿšœ Smart kid, valedictorian, but he kind of drifted around after High School getting various degrees and working many odd jobs. I’m actually surprised he stayed locally and didn’t move out west but maybe he liked the more suburban life of Upstate. I had been meaning to get a hot dog ๐Ÿถ from his family business by the Capitol but he hadn’t worked there in recent summers, so I never stopped about. I didn’t hear anything about it until mom showed me the obituary. ๐Ÿ“ฐ I haven’t seen anything on social media, I’m debating about going to his celebration of life event – I probably should go but I’ll end up missing more work.

I am continuing to work on my software for parsing the local tax rolls into useful spreadsheets that I can import into my GIS program. ๐ŸŒThere is so many interesting uses of that data and I’m continuing to parse it for more data. Geocoding is one of many uses. All of the local tax rolls are in the same format so what works for Albany also works for Birdsall in Allegany County. ๐Ÿฆ Property valuation is an interesting topic as is figuring out people’s tax bills and how they compare.

As previously noted, next Monday is Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm with dusk at 8:31 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid weather, partly sunny and temperatures between 79 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1944.

Washbowl Reflects

August 1, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clear and 77 degrees taking the CDTA Route 18. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees.

I’m talking the bus home, ๐Ÿš noticing how much earlier the sun sets now that we are into August. Depending how late I get up to the Adirondacks tomorrow I may want to buy firewood on the way up there. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Super tired after all those late nights working on Pine Bush stuff. ๐ŸŒฒIt’s really been consuming a lot of my free time outside of work so I haven’t done much on the blog lately, and I’ve been up after eleven most nights. It’s all the had habits I got in during vacation.

Once I get home I’ll have a quick dinner, load the kayak up and pack my camping gear. โ›บ Shouldn’t be a a big deal, it’s just a weekend up north. I will need to stop for a few supplies ok the way up on Friday night but shouldn’t be a big deal.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 59 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8pm. Calm wind. Good sleeping ๐Ÿ˜ด weather which I really need. ๐ŸŒฒIn 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 74 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1976.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 5% illuminated. The moon will rise at 7:24 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of t-storms then chance of showers. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 5:47 am with the first light at 5:15 am, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 33 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 13 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 58 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming southwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.

Made more progress on John Wolcott papers. ๐Ÿ“„ It’s always a nice walk over there after work ๐Ÿšถ when it’s not too hot. Some of the stuff is really interesting and a lot less so.

Checked out what the dental filing involves. ๐Ÿ˜I guess it’s not going to be that expensive with insurance, but I should make sure to brush my teeth more carefully in the back going forward. I’d think with all the milk I drink ๐Ÿฎ and the fact that I don’t eat sweets regularly it wouldn’t be a problem but I guess it’s part of getting old. I do need to try to floss more too. It might be a little painful but it’s only an hour.

In four weeks on August 29 the sun will be setting at 7:34 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 40 minutes and 56 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 96 and 74 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 78 and 58 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 2018.

Looking ahead, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is a month away, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 2 months and Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 9 weeks.

The Banana Trick and Other Acts of Self-Checkout Thievery

The Banana Trick and Other Acts of Self-Checkout Thievery

How common are self-scanning scams? If anonymous online questionnaires are any indication, very common. When Voucher Codes Pro, a company that offers coupons to internet shoppers, surveyed 2,634 people, nearly 20 percent admitted to having stolen at the self-checkout in the past. More than half of those people said they gamed the system because detection by store security was unlikely. A 2015 study of self-checkouts with handheld scanners, conducted by criminologists at the University of Leicester, also found evidence of widespread theft. After auditing 1 million self-checkout transactions over the course of a year, totaling $21 million in sales, they found that nearly $850,000 worth of goods left the store without being scanned and paid for.

The Leicester researchers concluded that the ease of theft is likely inspiring people who might not otherwise steal to do so. Rather than walk into a store intending to take something, a shopper might, at the end of a trip, decide that a discount is in order. As one retail employee told the researchers, “People who traditionally don’t intend to steal [might realize that] … when I buy 20, I can get five for free.” The authors further proposed that retailers bore some blame for the problem. In their zeal to cut labor costs, the study said, supermarkets could be seen as having created “a crime-generating environment” that promotes profit “above social responsibility.”

While I think the scanners have gotten better, I know a few times I've gotten home and noticed things made it past the scanner and not on the receipt. Not usually intentionally, just the usual didn't ring up correctly. That said, it does seem like recently the self-checkout lines have gotten a bit more accurate.

July 19, 2019 Morning

Good morning! I’m Happy, it’s the start of my Summer Vacation after work ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ! Going to be a hot one to-day but once the coolers are packed I’ll be on my way after work. Six weeks to Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ. Then reality sets in. But first some hot weather. Mostly cloudy and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. But it will get hot later on. The skies will clear around 10 am.

The plan is to be on the road by six-ish and out to Brookfield well before dark. I’m a bit concerned about severe weather driving out there but if I have to pull off due to blinding rain and wait out the storm so be it. ๐Ÿ’ฆI have a small bag of leftover kiln-dried firewood ๐Ÿ”ฅif I decide to have a fire but it might be too hot for that. I want to get an early start tomorrow from Brookfield, I packed cereal so after my coffee โ˜• I hope to be on the road by 8 am before the heat hits then stop briefly at the Montezuma winery ๐Ÿท and get a few bottles for mom and then head down to Taughannock State Park to swim ๐ŸŠ in Cayuga Lake before heading up to the National Forest, hanging up a hammock and drifting asleep to the mooing of the cows. ๐Ÿฎ

Today will be partly sunny and hot ๐Ÿ”ฅโ˜€, with a high of 93 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees above normal. But that’s not the whole story. Maximum dew point of 72 at 12pm. Heat index values as high as 101. Don’t let the ice melt in your beer ๐Ÿป cooler. South wind 6 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1904. I’m not sure if we will break the record set downtown 116 beers ago.

The sun will set at 8:28 pm with dusk around 9:01 pm, which is 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 86 degrees. The dew point will be 73 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 73. โ›ฑ There will be a west breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms between 9pm and 2am. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 74 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 7pm. West wind 5 to 13 mph becoming south after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 49 occurred back in 1974.

On this day, there was the Great New York City Fire of 1845: ๐Ÿ”ฅ The last great fire to affect Manhattan began early in the morning and was subdued that afternoon. The fire killed 4 firefighters, 26 civilians, and destroyed 345 buildings. Always be careful with matches, in densely packed urban areas with lots of wooden buildings. In Manhattan, Penna just don’t tick your neighbors off by burning too much plastic. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Hah.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and hot ๐Ÿ”ฅโ˜€, with a high of 96 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 74 at 6pm. Heat index values as high as 106. Won’t be that hot in the Finger Lakes and Cayuga Lake might be downright cold โ„. Remember snow, it’s coming, enjoy the hot weather. Light west wind increasing to 8 to 13 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1991.

Looking ahead to Sunday, scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny and hot ๐Ÿ”ฅโ˜€, with a high near 95. West wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 73 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

I’m going to play it day by day โ›บ but I have ambitious plans for the week if the weather is nice, which I’m hoping it will be by the latest models. โ˜€ Should be nice swimming ๐ŸŠ with the hot weather for the first half of the week, the only really bad day so far on the forecast is Monday with some rain but then sun balls and a lot cooler for the second half of the week. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Sleepy for the fourth

July 18, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Two weeks to August ๐ŸŒป. Clouds and a few rain showers and 75 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. โ˜” I doubt that I needed a rain coat but I figured be safe rather than sorry. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 am. Going to be super hot tomorrow. But my vacation starts then and I can always use the air conditioning while driving out there, followed by cold beverages and a fan to stay cool and maybe laying back on the hammock.

I overslept this morning as it’s pretty dark and gray. โ˜ It was raining fairly hard early on. I got up at eight AM and had to dig around for my phone. ๐Ÿ“ฑ I did find it. I think I turned my alarm โฐ off for Independence Day and didn’t notice it last week because the sun was up fairly early as it was sunny.

Today will be scattered showers, mainly before 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 81 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 10th. Reminds us that summer won’t last forever. Maximum dew point of 69 at 2pm. North wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953. It’s going to be warm this weekend but not 1950s warm. People ask how I love without air conditioning, I ask how did people do it during the 1950s when it was truly rare.

The sun will set at 8:29 pm with dusk around 9:02 pm, which is 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 38 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1875.

Today is the 200th Day of Year. Only 165 days remain. Then it will be 2020, the start of the third decade of the 21st century. ๐ŸŒŸ The future is ahead, that’s all there is to say. But first vacation starting tomorrow.

I want to see if I can hook up the ignitor on the new camp stove burner ๐Ÿ”ฅ tonight, along with doing the bulk of packing for vacation. I also need to run to laundromat, dollar store and grocery. I plan to do whatever packing I can tonight and will pack the coolers and propane when I leave home after work tomorrow. Not going to bring a lot of food, just enough for Friday and maybe Saturday and will buy what I need come Sunday.

On this day in 1969, Senator Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts drives his car off a bridge and his passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, dies. ๐Ÿ˜ฅ And in 1984, there were McDonald’s massacre in San Ysidro, California: In a fast-food restaurant, James Oliver Huberty opens fire, killing 21 people and injuring 19 others before being shot dead by police. ๐Ÿ”ซAfter that, California implemented strict new gun control in that state, and there have been no more mass shootings. Thank God for the California legislature keeping safe.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, isolated showers and thunderstorms before 8am, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 95. Calm wind becoming west 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 74 at 7am. Sunday, scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 92. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 72 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until August ๐ŸŒป when the sun will be setting at 8:15 pm with dusk at 8:47 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 80 and 70 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 101 back in 1933.

Tirnell Mountain

July 17, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Half a week until vacation. ๐Ÿ–Life’s a beach. Then of course, Two weeks to my Teeth Cleaning Day ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. Mostly cloudy, humid and 76 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜ Raining up north in the Adirondacks, but not here. Calm wind. The dew point is 70 degrees. It was closer to 75 dew point in my bedroom when I was making pasta for lunch in my bedroom. Steam rises. Dew point has been near constant this morning. The skies will clear Friday around 11 am and incredibly hot. But once I get home from work I’ll grab the propane and fill the coolers and I’ll be on my way to Madison County.

I broke down and turned the fan on for a while last night for easy sleeping. ๐Ÿ˜ด I did cut it down to low by morning and had it off by the time I got up. I just really hate to waste energy and honestly I’d rather be comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, especially if I end up moving to a warmer climate in a few years or decades. The air conditioning on the bus is really nice, but I doubt it will be that cold when I get into the office, although I’ll probably draw the shades when I’m in the office.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 11am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Sounds like a muggy summer day. โ›ˆ Mostly cloudy, with a high of 85 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 10am. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1900.

The sun will set at 8:29 pm with dusk around 9:03 pm, which is 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ Sunsets are now before 8:30. At sunset, watch out for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 70 degrees. The heat index around sunset will be 74. โ›ฑ There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between midnight and 1am, then a chance of showers after 1am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 71 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 6pm. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1939.

That article I shared this morning about living off-grid in San Luis valley, really is kind of fascinating. ๐Ÿ  I am not into trailer living, and I think making a life out in the desert must be hard, but there are many places that are much cheaper and freer then living the city in New York State. I don’t like Colorado as I see where that state is going politically — to the left — with more and more gun restrictions, and the cheap parts of the state aren’t really that nice. I’ve had a fascination with South Dakota, primarily because nobody ever talks about it — Missouri and Idaho are nice, but it seems like there is so much going on up there. But at any rate, I still need to save some more money, and I still have family locally here in New York, at least for a few more years.๐Ÿ”

On this day in 1944, Near the San Francisco Bay, two ships laden with ammunition for the war explode in Port Chicago, California, killing 320. ๐Ÿ’ฃAlso on this day, another deadly tragedy. In 1981, A structural failure leads to the collapse of a walkway at the Hyatt Regency in Kansas City, Missouri killing 114 people and injuring more than 200. It was a stupid engineering mistake, the connectors weren’t probably hooked up on the bridges that spanned the hotel. Amazingly though, the hotel still stands, and it is still renting out rooms, but the bridges are long gone.๐Ÿฆ

They’re still talking about a hot weekend, maybe a little more unsettled in the Finger Lakes, but that’s to be expected with the heat and humidity. Saturday, mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 95. โ˜€Maximum dew point of 74 at 7am. Sunday, scattered showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 92. โ›ˆ Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 71 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

All and all next week looks fairly nice, but I’m going to keep watching the forecast. Maybe some rain showers and thunderstorms, and maybe a cloudy day or two, โ˜ but maybe much better then in recent years. It’s all because I’m not bringing my kayak, and I added the second battery to the solar system in my truck.๐Ÿ˜Ž And except for the weekend, not unreasonably hot — by later in the week I may want my hoodie as it’s going to be cool in the evening.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until my Teeth Cleaning Day ๐Ÿ˜ƒ when the sun will be setting at 8:16 pm with dusk at 8:48 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 86 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 98 back in 1917.
