Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Today in 44 BC, Julius Caesar, Dictator of the Roman Republic, is stabbed to death by Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, Decimus Junius Brutus, and several other Roman senators on the Ides of March. Plus don’t forget that song Vehicle by the Ides of March. Good song for friendly stranger in black sedans. 🚙 Nowadays they’d probably be SUVs with big speakers.

I wasn’t so freaked out about the media crap over Coronavirus 😷 but increasingly I am concerned after hearing about it on the Skeptics Guide to the Universe 🌌. The truth is that there ain’t a lot to do besides wash one’s hands 👐 good and pray 🙏. Social distancing might help but I’m skeptical – how much time ⌚ will it buy? Is it worth the high economic and social costs? I guess only time will tell. The whole situation is both abursd and kind of frightening. 👾

Its just not a particularly nice morning with the clouds ☁ and the wind 🍃. I decided to call off going to Schoharie or Madison County for this week because it doesn’t look really sunny out there for most of the weekend and the wind will make things kind of raw. Plus all the mud and fields covered with cow shit 🐮 and gray skies can be a bit depressing.

I am going to play it by ear 👂 but I don’t expect a real nice weather day although I’ll probably walk out to Five Rivers later. I have some mapping to do, and I am going to read the Rapp Road DEIS more but I’m not a scientist so I don’t know what to really object to but in general.

Today in 1900, the Gold Standard Act is ratified, placing United States currency on the gold standard. 💱 Historians and economists say it was a terrible policy because it hand cuffed the federal reserve to keep them from addressing the financial situation of the Great Depression.

Today in 1933, was the first of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s fireside chats. 📻 Now we just have the president’s tweet storms at five am to run the news 📰 narrative of the day. Although nobody seems to care about the presidents thoughts 💭 while he’s on the toilet 🚽 today, it’s all about Coronavirus. 👾

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 15 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 43. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees. That wind might make it a bit chilly especially after the fun goes down. We’ll see but there is still a lot of spring time left

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Three weeks to Average High is 50 🌸. Partly sunny and 30 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. There is a north-northwest breeze at 14 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 19. Nice morning but cold to start out the day with that wind. But I’m hoping for a warm up tomorrow that will last for a while. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️

Last night I woke up with a cramp in my leg. 💪I was real painful then but it went away. But I ended up not getting a real early start but I made it Five Rivers by nine. 🐦Not a lot of wildlife out on this rather chilly morning.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 41 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. North wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 26 degrees. Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 42.4° from the due south horizon (-28.5° vs. 6/21). Today’s agenda is pretty standard. 🚶 I’ll probably head home at noon 🕛 go to Schodack Island in the afternoon, visit Aldis and wash my truck. 🚿 Also want to start unpacking and organizing my camping gear. ⛺ I doubt I’ll get out camping next week but I want to be ready when the weather comes. Also want to drop off the recycling paper 📄 at the park and ride. 🅿 Soon I’ll need to take the cans and bottles to the transfer station. ♻ And maybe get rid of some other junk. Although a lot of it is scrap metal.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 21 degrees at 4am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 3rd. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 7 degrees. The record low of -2 occurred back in 1989.

With the forecast for this week and shutting off the heat at my apartment. ♨ Except for tonight the mercury is going to be well above freezing and with lots of sun to heat the building with radiation. ☀ It might be warm enough on Monday and Tuesday to open the windows for the day. Might be a bit chilly tomorrow morning but so be it.

Back in 1967, Bloody Sunday: a group of 600 civil rights marchers is brutally attacked by state and local police in Selma, Alabama. 👮 Things have changed a lot in America since then but too much remains the same.
