Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Squirrel Appreciation Day. 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently clear and 19 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be clear, with a low around 12. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Waxing gibbous moon that is close to full, setting at 5:15 am. Pretty moon for sure. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:18 am with first light at 6:47 am, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier then today.

Fired up Big Red and picked up some headphones at Walmart because I managed to break another pair. Sometimes I get ear buds that last for months, other times the ones I get break after a few weeks. The good news is Big Red is working well, starts right up in the cold. It’s a salty mess but I’ll clean her up on Saturday. Also thinking of doing an oil change on Saturday if the weather is decent, she’s close to being due. Also picked up a few groceries and supplies. If we do get snow on Saturday, I’m prepared but as of now it looks like Saturday will be nothing worse than cloudy. So be it.

I hope you had a good Squirrel Appreciation Day … Sleep well!

Squirrel Appreciation Day 2016 Evening

Good evening on this Squirrel Appreciation Day.Currently a few clouds and 25 degrees in Delmar. Not a terrible evening for January. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 12. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph.

Tonight we have a waxing gibbous moon that is pretty close to full, setting at 5:15 am. Friday will be sunny, with a high near 29. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph.

Went out for a drink or two after work as is common on Thursday evenings. By any measure of the week, it’s been a long week. I’ll be glad for the weekend which within a week will be well underway.

Squirrel Appreciation Day 2016 Morning

Good morning! Squirrel Appreciation Day. It is currently sunny and 18 degrees in Delmar. Sunny all day, with a high near 30. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Not a bad day for appreciating squirrels in the woods with your 22lr or air gun. There definitely out there with the sun shinning and the air pressure dropping advancing from the storm down south that will miss us. Sunset will be at 4:54 pm with twilight at 5:25 pm which is one minute and 15 seconds later then yesterday. The post five o’clock sunset is rapidly approaching, coming next Monday.

There are 4 months, 18 days until Best Friends Day. That is a little ways away. This day in 1977, United States President Jimmy Carter pardons nearly all American Vietnam War draft evaders, including some of whom had emigrated to Canada. Certainly one of the most controversial measures of his presidency, especially by Vietnam veterans who served despite their personal reservations about the war.

The weekend weather looks incredibly nice for mid-January with temperatures reaching the low 30s and plenty of sun, especially on Sunday. For this time of year, it’s pretty nice. Might do an oil change on Saturday and then on Sunday the Save the Pine Bush Hike.

If I didn’t have stuff to do this would be a perfect weekend for camping and snowshoeing or cross country skiing. in the Adirondacks. Maybe next weekend.Β  Right now the snow is perfect in the Adirondacks for cross country skiing, not too deep but also a good powder layer over an ice covered layer.

Penguin Awareness Day 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently mostly clear and 22 degrees in Delmar. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 16. Northwest wind around 7 mph. Waxing gibbous moon, setting at 4:17 am. Getting closer to the full moon for sure. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:18 am with first light at 6:48 am, which is one minute and 42 seconds earlier then today.

Tim Nichols presentation at the Save the Pine Bush Dinner was interesting, I learned a lot about his life long campaign against smoking. I may not have agreed with all his politics or tactics, but he seemed like a genuinely nice guy and a smart individual. His crusade against smoking came from his heart and not just because he was a paid lobbyist for the Lung Association. Government needs a few people on both sides of the aisle like him to give it a moral conscience. Negotiators and those in the middle are important, but so are the fringes. The Save the Pine Bush Dinners always have some great speakers. I got to hear his whole speech tonight, as Claire ever so kindly did the dishes tonight.

I’m tired but it seemed like a quick bus ride home, maybe because I was playing on my phone and reading some news articles. I was also listening to music. Sometimes the band Bread can hit a nerve after a long day at work.

I’ve grown increasingly interested in drinking water quality since the Flint Water scandal and somewhat alarmed about the increasing appearance of trihalomethanes in our drinking water in many cities including the town of Bethlehem. I know local water boards blame tighter federal standards for the violations but carcinogenic trihalomethanes aren’t a good thing to be in drinking water – they’re byproducts of chlorine disinfection – when it’s used with water containing a fair amount of suspended solids, mostly caused by pollution and poorly treated sewage as is a problem in the Albany Pool of the Hudson River. The worse the water quality, the more chlorine used and the more suspended solids, producing more trihalomethanes like chloroform. In other words, more treated human shit in your drinking water means more cancer causing chemicals. To make matters worse, trihalomethanes are corrosive, they can leach lead and copper out of pipes, as happened in Flint. I won’t stop drinking local water, but I will keep advocating for a cleaner river.

I hope you had a good Penguin Awareness Day. Sleep well!

Penguin Awareness Day 2016 Morning

Good morning! Happy Penguin Awareness Day. It is currently sunny and 19 degrees in Delmar. Today will be for the most part sunny, with a high near 29. The penguins will like the sun but not the wind. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Blustery for sure. There is road salt everywhere as we progress through the grimness of winter.

The only glimmer of hope on these cold and salt covered winter mornings is the days are getting longer. Sunset will be at 4:53 pm with twilight at 5:24 pm which is one minute and 14 seconds later then yesterday. Every minute and seconds count. Before you know it, the sun will set after 8 PM and it will be 70 degrees most evenings.

There are 5 days until Opposite Day. Should be a fun day to celebrate. This day in 1949, Point Four Program a program for economic aid to poor countries announced by President Harry S. Truman in his inaugural address for a full term as President.

January 19, 2016 Night

Good evening. Currently a few clouds and 21 degrees with the wind whipping around at 17 mph and gusts exceeding 30 in Delmar. You can really hear the roar of the wind. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 15. Northwest wind 14 to 17 mph. If you dare go outside on this cold evening, look for the rapidly growing waxing gibbous moon, setting at 3:18 am. Tomorrow’s sunrise will be at 7:19 am with first light at 6:48 am, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier then today.

Started playing with the cartogram QGIS plug in. Talk about some cool maps. That’s something I really want to explore more in the future. I went down to the library for a bit and mostly just wasted time with maps. But I have many neat ideas going forward.

I hope you had a good day. Sleep well!

January 19, 2016 Morning

Good morning! Back to work after the long weekend. It is currently partly cloudy and 13 degrees with a windchill around zero in Delmar. Today will have a slight chance of snow showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 23. Wind chill values as low as -3. Windy, with a northwest wind 20 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Definitely a chilly day in the town we now lovingly call Socialist Delmar.

Sunset will be at 4:52 pm with twilight at 5:23 pm which is one minute and 14 seconds later then yesterday. Six days until sunset after 5 pm. The nights may be long but we are chopping a little time off from them every day.

The road salt is everywhere today. This is the awful winter season we are often reminded but sometimes forget about in nicer weather. True, it could be colder but it still is pretty harsh out there with the cold winds and road salt everywhere.

There are 2 months, 1 day until Palm Sunday. Easter is fairly early this year, the last weekend of March. This day in 1983, The Apple Lisa, the first commercial personal computer from Apple Inc. to have a graphical user interface and a computer mouse, is announced.
