Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

Tonight was the Save the Pine Bush Dinner. We had a very interesting speaker from Northern Quebec who talked about the impacts that hydropower dams and damming up rivers more generally are having on their community.
A little while ago I was heading home on the Route 18, listening to Day by Day from the Godspell sound track. It sounds very late 1960, because it is. Tomorrow is Thursday.
In three weeks it will be Twilight Zone Day when the Civil Twilight will conclude at 8:39, in other words dusk. Until recently I didn’t realize that most normal people call the end of twilight a time known as dusk. I guess there is a lot of things to learn.
Really looking forward to vacation next week in Central New York, then Finger Lakes and down in Pennsylvania. Should be a pretty nice trip assuming all goes fairly smoothly. It’s been a long time since I’ve spent much time out of town.
The landlord fixed the sink so it’s no longer dripping. One less thing to worry about. Now I don’t have keep things clean and organized as much. Also won’t get blamed for ignoring a leak. Glad that’s off my plate.
Now the weather looks increasingly nice for my trip next week. Tuesday is the worst day of the week but clearing by afternoon. Might be cold enough to actually warrant bringing the big buddy heater for nights by the fire, but that’s to be expected in late April. I think it still will be somewhat green in the Finger Lakes. I’m sure I’ll have to refill the propane while camping but I’m sure I can find a place that refills propane like Tractor Supply Company.
I got my CDTA Navigator Card. Right now I’ll only use it occasionally when my discount bus pass expires. I will fill it with 15 bucks for now, so have it ready to go and not have to worry about carrying cash for a bus fare.
Now watching the PBS Newshour, but pretty soon will retire for the night. Tomorrow should be mostly sunny and 75 degrees. A nice spring day for sure. Looking forward to it.
Good morning. Happy Hump Day. 43 degrees and sunny this morning. 61 degrees later and blue skies throughout the day. Typical weather for late April.
Now the weather looks better for next week for my trip. Wednesday may have clouds and showers but that may be better for fishing in Nelson Swamp.

As we head into the 9 o’clock hour we are at 46 degrees under sunny skies. Trees are in bloom. I had to take the local yokel bus to work as I had to wait for the landlord to arrive to fix my leaky sink faucet. Should be a spring day as things are starting to bud up pretty good in the city and we are looking for a high around 61 degrees.
The weekend looks pretty nice but at this point I don’t envision heading out of town. I heard it is going to be in the low 60s both days with sunny conditions. I thought about going up to Hope Falls Road but heck I’m heading out on vacation on Tuesday evening so I really should pack this weekend. I also need to test the new camp stove out, so to make sure it’s ready to go.
Two months from today will be the first day of summer. It remarkable how brief the seasons really are. The unofficial start of summer – Memorial Day – is forty days off.
Tonight is the Save the Pine Bush Dinner at the First Presbyterian Church between State Street and Chestnut downtown. As usual it’s at 6 pm. I’m sure somebody interesting will be speaking but I’m too lazy to check savethepinebush.org website.
Today in 1861, Robert E. Lee, resigns his commission in the United States Army in order to command the forces of the state of Virginia. While many people have strong opinions about slavery in our country, I always thought it was rather unfair for the northern states to try to impose their views on the south. Over time I’m sure this institution would have faded away without war based on an industrializing south. War should never be the answer and while the civil war wasn’t as toxic as modern warfare, a lot of unnecessary blood was spilled the night they drove old Dixie down….
I sat out back briefly before deciding it was too cool to sit outside. It’s 55 degrees but with the breeze feels much cooler. I had a beer then came inside and are now watching the PBS Newshour. I could listen to the NPR live coverage of the New York Primary but I figure I don’t really need to hear the pundits guess until we have actual news.
Tonight the low will be 37 degrees which is cool but only slightly below normal. Tomorrow 62 degrees and sunny but with less wind. Waxing Gibbous Moon with about 90% visible until almost 6 AM. Daybreak at 5:34 AM and sunrise at 6:05 AM.
Tomorrow my landlord is coming to fix the leaky sink faucet. I’m always a bit creeped out about having him over, even though it’s just an economic relationship – I pay him for the privilege of using his property. It was kind of the same with the rental truck I had. Things wear out and I’ve been here for a while. I’m glad it’s getting fixed.
The long range forecast only looks so-so for my trip. But it’s a long ways off. Even if I have a day of rain or clouds, I’ll find good ways to make the most of my adventure. I look forward to getting out of town.
If it’s going to be this cloudy and damp, it might as well rain. Still at about 50 degrees. Sun returns for the afternoon but breezy around 64. I’m fine with that, though the red flag conditions this evening suck. Sunny for Wednesday, clouds creep in in Thursday and on and off showers on Friday. Seasonable or slightly above average weather for the rest of the week.
Today in 1775, the American Revolution began. The war begins with an American victory in Concord during the battles of Lexington and Concord. Many Americans now disagree with the revolution and wish we were still part of the British monarchy, but so be it. Our country’s revolutionary start, our protection of basic rights, and our agrarian roots should not be forgotten.
Hopefully today will be a pretty quiet day, although I suspect with the breeze and seasonable weather I’ll need a sweater when I go down to vote. Yesterday’s warmth was nice, and it’s April so it’s not expected to last. Things are continuing to green up in the city, especially in warmer locations like on the plaza.

Good morning. Happy Presidential Primary Day in New York. Not to be confused with Congressional Primary Day on June 28th or State Primary Day on September 13th. Polls open at noontime during primaries upstate.
Fifty degrees this morning under cloudy skies. The dew point is 46 degrees and it’s cool and damp this morning. 64 degrees later with gradual clearing expected to get underway mid day. The dew point will drop and wind will pick up, leading on red flag conditions.
Tonight sunset is at 7:43 pm under clear but blustery conditions around 54. Getting down to 39 degrees under clear skies by morning. Sunny and 62 for Hump Day, which is two degrees above normal.
As we head into the 10 o’clock hour, it is 65 degrees and moonlit night. While you can see some of the stars, there are a lot of moonlit clouds above. Occasionally a cool breeze but pretty nice this evening. Went down to the park for a while this evening, and played on my laptop and did the evening walk.
Even with the time change, dawn is at 5:35 am and sunrise is at 6:05. Good if you’re a dairy farmer or early riser but for the rest of us it’s pretty early. That said, I try to get an early start and walk to the bus stop. Today, not so early as I had to drop off my dry cleaning at the dry cleanera.
Tonight we have a slight chance of showers around dawn and into the beginning of the new day with a low around 49. Pretty mild for April. Tomorrow will be more seasonable with a high around 64 degrees and clearing throughout the day.
Tomorrow is Presidential Primary Day in New York. I will be voting when I walk down to the park tomorrow after work. Probably will vote for Bernie Sanders for the primary. I think on the Democratic side of things his heart is in the right place. I think he’s more likely to listen to people then other candidates. Having the first woman president would be great too, although I may consider a more conservative candidate that’s closer to my views when the general election rolls around. Congressman Paul Tonko has my vote though for sure.
I think the landlord fixed my leaky sink as its no longer dripping but I’ll keep things neat and clean in case he swings by tomorrow. I don’t know the leak wasn’t that bad and it’s possible that the washer fixed it self or it got a tighter seal after I cleaned up the faucet. I am always creeped out by letting my landlord snoop around the apartment and find everything that I’ve broke over the years, although most of the damage is ordinary wear and tear that renters don’t normally bother to repair themselves. Humidity is a problem in my apartment which causes the drywall to be soft and hangers come loose, for appliances to rust, and mold to creep in. The mold is under control after ample use of concentrated bleach sprayed everywhere, but it also has accelerated the patina that has formed on the refrigerator. I don’t have company over. But I love the location and it’s cheap. Maybe things would be drier on humid summer days if I had air conditioning, but that’s not something I’m willing to have at home.
I usually do my wash at my parents house during Sunday dinner. But they had yet another washing machine break down. So I’ve been going to the laundromat. Which I don’t mind, because those machines are fast. Honestly, I don’t know if I’ll ever own a laundry machine. I’m looking at eventually a tiny house or at least a small one off grid, and washing machines require high voltage electricity and take up a lot of space. I’d rather spend my money on land then a fancy house. Washing machines break down a lot and while laundromats aren’t cheap, when the costs are added together – replacement machines, water electricity, etc. – it’s wash. A family with children is probably a different situation to a single guy though.
Honestly, as long as I can have a hot shower to get clean – propane tankless water heaters are cheap nowadays – I don’t care much about the rest. I’m fine with wood heat, bucket toilets and outhouses and either propane lighting or 12 volt LED lighting and a small inverter for things like running my laptop and monitor. With my Smartphone, I see no reason to have Internet at home. I like camping and as long as I can get a hot shower and in insulated enough place in the winter, I’m more than happy to do that full time.
Forgot to plug-in the my Digital TV tuner, so I didn’t tape the PBS Newshour at 6:30. But I came inside and caught the 10 pm rebroadcast. I used to listen to NPR a lot more for news, but the pictures on the Newshour help to better tell the story. I like how Newshour really explains the issues, and how diverse the anchors are… One is black, one is Indian, and many are women. In contrast, most of the major networks are overly white and prone to gossip over real news.
I’m going to watch a bit more of the Newshour and then off to bed…
