I think President’s Day should be replaced with a new holiday – Black Panthers Day.
Why? While some presidents like John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama were exceptionally talented and smart individuals, many other were really bad. The president, while the executive figure in our government, really is just one person, a mere mortal in time, not a citizens movement empowered for change.
In contrast, the Black Panthers were dedicated to making their communities better, following the law, and protecting themselves from the violence of the state. The Black Panthers took on the American ethos far more any president – self-reliance, community engagement, looking out for one and another. Few movements have ever been as truly American as that of the panthers.
Our country should celebrate individual empowerment and what communities can do to protect themselves working together, and not relying on the often corrupt state that is disconnected from local communities’ own needs.
We don’t need another holiday like President’s Day celebrating monarchy and the rich and powerful in our country. We need holidays that celebrate the people, especially those who work so hard to improve our communities. That’s why I think we should replace Presidents Day with a Black Panthers Day.

I decided to walk down to the express bus 🚍 but it was raining or misting fairly hard. Not a nice day to be outside and it only is going to get worse. Its a reminder that it can happen here. Or anywhere. We pretend we are better than fascism and we would never let a strong man rule our country. But is that really true or just a lie we tell ourselves? Would we behave differently than the Germans or the Italians during the Great Depression? Power can often is abused by people who think they have God on their side as power often is violent and oppressive. People should be skeptical of power both of their own political persuasion and that of others. People should welcome the dysfunction of democracy and the virtues of taking it slow. Fascism can come to America and its just as likely to be a left wing as a right wing thing.
I noticed that CDTA’s vehicle locator system has a public facing feed at the Internet that one could pull to get the locations of all the buses currently on the road.
This might be useful for a mapping application (as there are coordinates for each bus in feed, along with direction of the bus) or maybe just a straight-forward text interface for using on mobile apps. I am undecided if I will make something public-facing or just for my ease and convenience. I’ll have to think more about it.
