December 10, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy 7:15 AM Sunrise βŒ›οΈ! It was such a dark morning I had trouble getting out of bed so I took the local to work, which I had to run for because it was running early πŸƒ and I was running late as one of my contacts πŸ‘€ was irritating me. 🚍 Darn auto refill isn’t working on my card πŸ’³ so I ended up paying $2 in cash for the bus ride downtown. I’ll take care of that when I get to the office, maybe putting a bunch on the card so I won’t have to refill right away. Two weeks to Christmas Eve πŸŽ….

Dark and rainy with fog, around 41 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌁 Kind of what you call a generic December not nice day. There is a south breeze at 10 mph. πŸƒ. Rain made me feel a bit stiff when I first got up. There are 8 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. Warm weather and the dampness.

First time I’ve taken the local downtown in a while. 🚍 I noticed that they’re doing more remidation of the old dry cleaner again. PERC is pretty nasty stuff. πŸ‘΅I am glad they are banning 1,4-dioxane in common cleaning products — it’s another nasty chemical. While it’s true most of the 1,4-dioxane in the drinking water is decades old from manufacturing chlorinated solvents, even trace amounts are a problem with it’s affinity for water. πŸ‘” That said, I think my current dry cleaner uses PERC, although these days PERC is much more heavily regulated and spills are less common then in years ago. Delaware Avenue is good and clear now that the snow emergency came and went and the rain has melted back the snow banks. πŸ’§I prefer the express just because that gets me to work a bit earlier plus it’s a nicer ride in on the expressway.πŸ”

Today will have a chance of rain. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 47 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 19th. South wind 8 to 10 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1966. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 2 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 48 seconds over yesterday.

Over to John Wolcott house πŸ” after work. I don’t plan to go over again this month between the holidays, my planned end of the year road trip and other things to do including Save the Pine Bush 🌲events. Plus I want to save some time to work on electronics projects. πŸ”¬ He really doesn’t have that many more boxes to go through, or so I tell myself. πŸ—ƒ

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 7pm, then a slight chance of snow. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 26 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 13 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.

Today in 1978, Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin and President of Egypt Anwar Sadat are jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work ending the Arab-Isreali conflict✌. Also, in 1817 Mississippi becomes the 20th U.S. state, and the only one that still has the rebel flag on it’s state flag. 🏴󠁡󠁳󠁭󠁳󠁿 I’ve never given Mississippi much of a thought πŸ’ but I bet it’s hot there in the summer. I bet it’s weird and southern like Virginia and not as Appalachian as Wild and Wonderful West Virignia.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. :( Saturday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees.

This weekend my parents are having a holiday tree decorating party, πŸŽ„ and on Sunday is the Save the Pine Bush benefit event for fighting the apartment complex that want to building in the Pine Bush. πŸ—οΈπŸ˜οΈπŸŒ³πŸŒ² I also want to work on some electronics projects over the weekend.

I need to refill my phone. πŸ“² The past few years I’ve been doing the StraightTalk 1-year plan, that costs like $540 a year (including the $50 in taxes) to do. I am happy with the service, and are fine with laying out the money, as then I don’t have to worry about monthly payments or refills. Then my phone will have service until Christmas Evening 2020, which is the next time it will expire. I could get a cheaper plan, but I find that the 25 gigabyte of data is necessary as I don’t have internet at home — I don’t use the full 25 gigabytes but when your throttled to 2G it is so slow.🐒

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until New Years Eve πŸŽ† when the sun will be setting at 4:31 pm with dusk at 5:03 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 41 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1895.

December 7, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Two weeks to First Day of Winter β˜ƒοΈ. Partly sunny and 26 and 2/5 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜€Accentuate the positive, that is the 2/5th of a degree. Calm wind. There are 12 inches of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 2 pm. 🌡️

A cold morning and my apartment got really cold ❄ by the middle of night but has warmed up nicely. I went out and knocked the snow off the solar panel on the truck and I should be ready to go 🚙 once I decide to head out this weekend.

I think I found the plug-in that was slowing down the blog, and I re-wrote it to avoid the problem. 🔌 I’m continuing to debug the revised code but hope to make it live today. The plug-ins you can get for WordPress are good but sometimes they aren’t a good fit for my blog, especially as it has grown and changed over the years. 💻

In a little bit I’m going to head to the library 📚 and switch over to the new code and maybe download a few more videos to watch later on today. 📹

I glued the tip of my skies 🎿 and I should be ready to go out later. I am thinking this afternoon of heading down to the Norman’s Kill Gorge. Assuming that the wind doesn’t pick up it should be pretty nice ski.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 30 degrees at 1pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1998. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 2003.❄

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 6 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 Almost to the earliest sunset of the year. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 26 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an decrease of one minute and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 9 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 13 at 3am; Calm wind. Brr. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 14 degrees. The record low of -3 occurred back in 1902.

Today in 1787, Delaware becomes the first state to ratify the United States Constitution. 📄 And for football fans in 1963, Instant replay makes its debut during the Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. 🏈 1972 today marked the end of an era — Apollo 17, the last Apollo moon mission, is launched. 🌕 🚀The crew takes the photograph known as The Blue Marble as they leave the Earth. 🌎 Then with 1970s rolling around they decided hanging out on the moon was pointless as it took away from dollars 💵 going to burn small children 👶with napalm 💥in Vietnam. Ain’t America a grand place to live?

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm with dusk at 5:01 pm. By then it will seem like it’s getting a little lighter in the evening. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, cloudy, mild and temperatures between 50 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1982.

What Did Max Weber Mean by the β€˜Spirit’ of Capitalism?

What Did Max Weber Mean by the β€˜Spirit’ of Capitalism?

We use the word ‘capitalism’ today as if its meaning were self-evident, or else as if it came from Marx, but this casualness must be set aside. ‘Capitalism’ was Weber’s own word and he defined it as he saw fit. Its most general meaning was quite simply modernity itself: capitalism was ‘the most fateful power in our modern life’. More specifically, it controlled and generated ‘modern Kultur’, the code of values by which people lived in the 20th-century West, and now live, we may add, in much of the 21st-century globe. So the ‘spirit’ of capitalism is also an ‘ethic’, though no doubt the title would have sounded a bit flat if it had been called The Protestant Ethic and the Ethic of Capitalism.

November 29, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Buy Nothing Day 🛍️! Hey it’s a holiday off from work so I can’t complain. I might have to run to the store to get some drain solvent for that stupid bathroom drain that always plugs and maybe you some cheese 🍊 and a few other supplies. Eggs without cheese for breakfast Isa criminal offense. 🍳 Next Friday is Saint Nicholas Day 🎅. I think I’m supposed to have a shoe 👟 graphic for that or Santa with the black face indicator flag on. Dutch pride! My grandmother a few generations back was very much proud Dutch. Dutch rednecks are the best especially those who migrate to Americas to farm or so I maintain based on the YouTube.

Mostly cloudy and 33 and 1/3 degrees or something like that in Delmar, NY. β›… Probably the Dick Curless record I’m listening was probably a 45 single. The microgroove format war was horse 🐴 like those things often are. 💿 There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. I decided it’s too ducking cold to head up north and I don’t want to camp one night and turn around and come back before the snow on Sunday. β›„ It might not snow until later Sunday but there is still a lot of uncertainty about the storm but it might be a big one.

Feeling pretty good this morning, although I had a bit of an upset stomach 😩 after taking the doxycline and then about twenty minutes later, some strong coffee β˜• that was a bit of reheat from yesterday. But most of sting is out of my arm 🙋 and I have been feel less achy. 🎯Still have the bullseye but it’s faded away. Modem medicine is amazing with Lyme if you catch it early.🐞

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 11th. Northwest wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees or was that 2017? I am not sure, I may need to update my NOAA records. The record high of 66 was set in 2005. 3.3 inches of snow fell back in 1945.❄

I am not sure how much sun β˜€ we are actually going to have today. I just have a feeling that the clouds ☁ will stick around longer than the government says it will. I’m sure they want sun so there is more happy consumers shopping so they make tax revenue and landfill tipping fees except for those rednecks that burn it. 🔥 I Albany does well with all the asbestos contaminated debris and industrial waste it takes at its landfill. Recycling β™» is often being found out to be a scam like so many of the renewable energy schemes, especially when we are gluttons addicted to energy and technology. ⚑Making less garbage and using less energy is better than any greenies crap that you can get from Ellon Musk. 💩 The greenies who are hollier than holy have their heads planted in the ground. 🌲

If it gets nice out I plan to walk out to Five Rivers 🐸. Then down to the library maybe to launch the freshened up version of the blog. It’s not a totally new look but it’s a needed refresh that should load faster and look a little bit nicer while remaining the conservative styling that I like. βœ’There is a lot of cool things you can do with CSS 3, which nowadays is well supported by all modern browsers. The new design is a child theme of blankslate theme but if that is not supported in the future, I can easily port it to simple theme as I wrote all the styling rules myself.

I hadn’t just been up north last weekend I’m sure I’d be going up north and hot tenting. β›Ί But I don’t like driving in the snow or getting stuck going back to camp. And it’s going to really cold tomorrow with temperatures only in the 20s with the mercury in the single digits – and with that even the hot tent would be chilly.

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 26 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 33 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 19 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 21st. Maximum wind chill around 11 at 6am; Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Probably below zero wind chill up north. In 2018, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1875.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 34 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 20th. Christmas is coming unless you don’t celebrate as I don’t. 🎄 Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1933. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 1972.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, snow, mainly after 1pm. High near 31. β›„ Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. It’s going to be in the 20s in the Adirondacks Sunday so even if I got an early start I risk driving home again in the snow which would duck. 🐥 Typical average high for the weekend is 42 degrees. It’s stupid we are getting snow this early but who knows how long it will last in Trump’s America.

As previously noted, next Friday is Saint Nicholas Day 🎅 when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 68 back in 2001.

Gray morning

November 25, 2019 Morning

Good morning! One month from now will be Christmas Day. 🎄 It’s cloudy, gray and brown and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. Some God Rays peak through the clouds. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 6 pm. β˜ƒοΈ Turkey Day on Thursday. 🍗

Snow is all gone around here ❄ but it definitely was white up north, especially driving back through Wells after the snow squall. That said, I suspect most of the snow will disappear up north after the warm temperatures and what will likely be rain on Wednesday. I’m thinking about heading back to the Adirondacks on Black Friday assuming it looks to be sunny and I have that day off from work.

Today will be mostly cloudy β›… with more sun later and a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 21st. That said after the recent bought of cold weather that’s basically a heat wave. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2004. 21.8 inches of snow fell back in 1971.❄

The sun will set at 4:25 pm with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 34 degrees at 3am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 8th. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph after midnight. In 2018, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1938.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. :? Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 42 degrees.

Forecast seems similar to this past weekend but probably colder. Lots of sun β˜€ on Friday too. If I do camp β›Ί this weekend it’s going to be hot tenting for sure. But it will be nice, especially next to a big ol fire 🔥. Might be icy in spots though after Wednesday rain followed by the arctic blast. 💨

Looking ahead, next Monday is Cyber Monday 🛍️ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1998.
