Hamilton County

Hamilton County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. Its county seat is Lake Pleasant. It is one of only two counties that lie entirely within the Adirondack Park (Essex is the other). As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,836, making it the least populous county in New York. It is also the most sparsely populated county in the eastern half of the United States, with a population density of just over three people per square mile.

Hamilton County is in the north central part of the state, northwest of Albany. It lies entirely within Adirondack Park and consists mostly of publicly owned parkland. As the tourist folk will tell you, there is no permanent traffic light in the county.

Dunning Pond Trail

The Dunning Pond Trail runs from NY 30 to Gillmantown Road, mendaring along the Dunning Creek and passing by Dunning Pond, a swampy, modest-sized pond that was once dammed up for a mill. 4.5 miles in length, the elevation gain is roughly 600 feet along it's distance. There is a small parking area along NY 30 and this area is popular during hunting season. Sometimes people will walk back from Gilmantown Road to Dunning Pond, it is a 1.2 mile road.

Old Route 8B

Old Route 8B is a 1915-era routing of NY 8 and 30 between Wells and Speculator that is now a dead-end after the lower bridge was closed some time ago. It runs between Auger Falls and Speculator, passing closely by Austin Falls. Old Route 8B is most famous for Robert Garrow killing a camper at the Robb Creek Mill and then fleeing up Fly Creek Road. There are several campsites along the road, and Austin Falls is a scenic location where the Sacandaga River runs through a narrow floom. The road, while paved with concrete and letter covered with two layers of asphalt only receives the most minimum of maintenance, and is quite rough and disjointed in locations. Old Route 8A refers to the 1915 routing of NY 8 and 30, which at one time ran closer to Auger Falls and wound into the valley, taking a closer path to the Sacanadaga River.

A quarter mile separation ⛺

The quarter mile separation between campsites in the Adirondack State Land Master Plan is something I often quiver about. It does reduce camping opportunities at highly desirable camping locations but it greatly reduces user conflict – be it noise, light or smoke. No quiet hours here! When campsites are more then a quarter mile apart it’s far more of a wilderness experience, as witnessed by comparing Mason Lake to the Moffitt Beach Campground.

Cedar Lakes is the headwaters of Cedar River and is a reservior created by a long abandoned impoundment. It is located within the West Canada Lake Wildernessrea.
