Hamilton County

Hamilton County is a county located in the U.S. state of New York. Its county seat is Lake Pleasant. It is one of only two counties that lie entirely within the Adirondack Park (Essex is the other). As of the 2010 census, the population was 4,836, making it the least populous county in New York. It is also the most sparsely populated county in the eastern half of the United States, with a population density of just over three people per square mile.

Hamilton County is in the north central part of the state, northwest of Albany. It lies entirely within Adirondack Park and consists mostly of publicly owned parkland. As the tourist folk will tell you, there is no permanent traffic light in the county.

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland moves to ban the word ‘squaw’ from federal lands : NPR

Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland formally declared "squaw" to be a derogatory term Friday and ordered a task force to find replacement names for valleys, lakes, creeks and other sites on federal lands that use the word.

The order, which takes effect immediately, stands to affect more than 650 place names that use the term, according to figures from the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

Good Morning – October 11, 2021

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day. πŸ‚

Partly sunny and 60 degrees at the Catskill Scenic Trail. There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees.

You can probably guess where I’m out hiking today. 🚢 The part of the scenic trail between Grand Gorge and Stamford that I haven’t done yet. After today, I will have walked most of the trail.

Yesterday I finished reading most of JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy. 🀠 In many ways that book really strikes close to home, a culture I know well but also are somewhat distant from as my parents were college educated.
