Yesterday, out walking at Five Rivers it was an outstandling beautiful afternoon with hoards of people throughout the area. Too many to really enjoy it in my perspective, especially in the era of social-distancing.
You feed livestock, you cook food to yourself.Or so they say.
Lately in my forties I’ve been thinking a lot more about food and what I put in my body. One of the things I keep hearing about food and cooking is the question — does it taste good?
As if taste was the only thing to consider when eating. Or if taste was the primary thing to consider while eating. Taste gives immediate pleasure, but it is only really is one part of eating. The nutrition of the food is a much more significant part of eating, especially as one’s choices when it comes to eating compounds over time.
When feeding livestock, one consideration is the food palatable but in many ways it’s a secondary consideration to the goal of the farmer, to bulk up the animal, building muscle and fat for milk and meat production. Maybe one should think about food more like feed.
Food has to be good enough that one eats it. But it shouldn’t be so tasty one wants to engorge into it, stuffing one’s face with far more then is healthy. Food should have a lot of fiber to fill oneself up quickly, while being low on unhealthy fats, salt and sugar. Edible but not super, unnaturally delicious.
Too often when I read recipes or watch internet cooking videos, the priority seems to be to make the food as tasty as possible. Which might be good if your trying to bulk up on fat for slaughter, but maybe not so good if you trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I am not convinced that super, unnaturally delicious food should be a goal of cooking.
But warming up to start spring tomorrow. πΈ Quite nice tomorrow, too bad I have to work in the office downtown π’ . Then rain for the second half of the week. I am thinking though after tonight, I may be able to turn off the heat. I am not sure what my gas and electric bill would be, but it’s been fairly cold, though I’ve kept the heat down but I’ve used the electric blanket quite a bit this past month, as it’s nice to at least be warm in bed. Regardless I expect my bill to drop next month, as the gas heat is done for the year.

Good morning! Happy Sunday on this last day of winter which certainly will feel that way.
Partly sunny and 23 degrees β at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. Breezy, οΈ17 mph breeze from the west π¬ with gusts up to 28 mph π¨π¨π¨. The current wind chill is 9. There are 3.5 inches of snow on the ground. β οΈThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 9 am. π‘οΈ
I got out walking around 7 o’clock this morning, π which by my standards is pretty late. It was a nice morning but with the breeze picking up and clouds pushing in π₯ its becoming more of a raw day.
A lot of people grumble about the time change and how it makes the mornings dark again β
But it’s really not that bad as we are adding a lot of daylight this time of year and by 6:30 this morning the sky was already brightening.
Some facts to consider about the time change and the mornings:
Sunrise today was at 7:15 with dawn at 6:40.
Today’s sunrise was equal to around January 29th sunrise
The sunrise will be earlier than March 11, the last day before the time change come April 15
And that ignores all the benefits of extra daylight in the evening with sunset at 6:58 pm tonight and dusk not until around 7:30. And we gain daylight quickest this time of year.
