Dark and Rainy Sunday morning β˜”

It’s not pouring out this morning, but hardly a beautiful morning. Dark for sure, but then I get up early and the sun rises late. Up again at 5 AM, but I was asleep before 8 PM and I enjoy getting up early and having a good breakfast, and getting a jump on my day. Too dark to walk this morning so far, but I might go out in a bit.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Rain showers around and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 51 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 3 pm.

No big meals cooking up in the kitchen this morning, πŸ₯ž but I tried unsuccessfully to turn quinoa into pancakes like I do with oatmeal and bananas. I mean it was tasty on the griddle fried up, but even with mashed bananas and apples, I could not get it to bind together. It doesn’t have the gluten that oatmeal or flour has. It was worth a try. I’ve tried cleaning the quinoa better to get rid of more of that bitter taste, and it was better but after refrigerating it and washing again, still not great. It supposed to be a wonderful grain, but my results with it have been mixed. Almost too fussy for my bother, I’d rather stick with old fashioned oatmeal, whole wheat flour or traditional cream of wheat, the later which I fully admit isn’t whole-grain but I usually pair it with chia seeds, greek yogurt, fruit — and cream of wheat is “fortified” with some vitamins, so it’s hardly junk food.

Today will have a chance of showers. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 12th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 3pm. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 2017.

I was thinking about heading up to Keehler Preserve some time this morning πŸš΅β€β™€οΈ and do some riding after a fun day at Thacher Park riding about 20 miles, mostly trail riding. Getting better and more comfortable mountain biking. It’s not like urban or bike path riding. Totally different set of skills, to get comfortable dealing with rocks and roots and rough trails. I am less fearful of bumps and destroying my bike, though I don’t abuse it too much. I do loose my tail light on my bike, bumping over the rough trail, but it was an old one at this point and I should replace it with a brighter one. I am going to have to do some Internet research on what good lights are πŸ’‘ especially now the mornings and evenings are getting shadowy and dark, and it’s important to be seen, especially when commuting. Come the time change in six weeks, I’ll probably still ride in many mornings, but I’ll have to load my bike on the bus and ride home in the evening.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:48 pm with sun having an altitude of 47Β° from the due south horizon (-23.8Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:14 pm with the sun in the west (264Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (270Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:51 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:18 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (155Β°) at an altitude of 19Β° from the horizon, 227,464 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:52 pm. At sunset, look for more rain 🌧 and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

I probably should go to Walmart and buy more groceries and supplies. πŸ›’ I should go fairly early to avoid the crowds, though honestly I could wait until tomorrow after work. I would like to get more oatmeal and I’m out of frozen fruit. 🍐 πŸ“ I could go to the car wash and power wash Blackie 🚡 and Big Red. πŸ›» Not planning on heading camping next weekend but if it’s nice next weekend I might rattle can some of the rust on my truck before the salt spreaders are back on road. 🚢 I might walk first though.

Tonight will have a chance of more rain, mainly before 4am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 55 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Looking ahead, next Sunday is October πŸŽƒ when the sun will be setting at 6:38 pm with dusk at 7:05 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 69 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. I can’t believe how quickly the average temperature drops as we get past the equinox and autumn is well underway. Plus how short days are now. But that’s to be expected.. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1927.

 Into The Distance

As they say, stick in a fork in it 🍴

That is summer though it could be many things as I was up at five o’clock cooking this morning. Farmers are busy chopping silage and cutting hay and the final days of fresh tomatoes are upon us and it won’t be long before the Adirondacks burst full of color.

Good morning! Partly clear πŸŒ… and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.

So summer is done by any measure today, πŸ‚with the last full day of summer but already the days have gotten shorter and cooler. Didn’t sleep well last night πŸ› and I was up a little after five and made oatmeal and pumpkin πŸŽƒ pancakes πŸ₯ž. Plus more fresh rice and lentils. The split pea soup was good for lunch and dinner but I figured give it a break and have more with fresh bread tomorrow.

Out walking 🚢 around a bit before 6:30 as I was ready to go at that point and traffic is light. Going to ride to work 🚲 but will likely take the bus 🚍 home in the evening as I’ll want my laptop home this weekend to work on the transition to the new data structure, rewrite some of the underlying code and implementation monetization aka obnoxious ads on the maps pages. πŸ…°οΈ

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 20th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 1pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

The cable salesman stopped by… I told him what I always tell them… πŸ“± In the era of smartphones I can’t understand why any one would want internet at home. I actually haven’t had my laptop at home in months, and I don’t own a television. It’s funny, they just don’t want to give up on me.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963. Not a real nice night, as I’m bringing my laptop home over the weekend to work on the blog, I will probably not ride home. Tonight, I’m thinking I’ll fry up some zucchuni and vegetables πŸ† for dinner. Then probably walk down tot the library with my laptop. πŸ‘©‍πŸ’»

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 63 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 12th. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1895.

Not going to be a weekend to get away and camp. πŸ• That’s fine, last weekend was nice at Rensslaerville State Forest 🌲 and this weekend is the Nature Bus. I will probably go up to Thacher Park in the morning with Blackie and ride trail 🚡‍♀️ and maybe hang out in the hammock for a while before heading home, probably before 6:20 PM if the rain starts to push in early. A lot depends on what develops with the tropical storm off the court.

Looking ahead to Sunday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. πŸŒ₯ Cloudy, with a high near 63. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 56 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees. Some models are suggesting even more rain come Sunday. Not sure, only time will tell. Probably just head out to the folks house, after spending some time working on the blog.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Buy Nothing Day πŸ›οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.

Carved

Making progress on the blog πŸ“

I’m making some progress on redoing the data structure to trim down the blog size to make it more efficient with years worth of space to grow. Rather than keep PDFs of all the maps I will have the blog seemlessly generate them on the fly. Doesn’t seem to be real CPU intensive to do that and if I see performance problems I can cache the fifty or hundred frequently requested maps. Most of the PDFs on the blog are image based, I don’t do Vector PDFs due to the size of the maps.

Taking out some obsolete code from the blog, some of which hasn’t been actively used or maintained in over a decade. I’m not going to keep the interactive 3D models as they’re kind of big and Q3D2JS plugin keeps breaking their format requiring changes to the blog code. Also the side by side history format is getting dumped as I don’t use it much in favor of the mapwarper.net website.

I’ve decided to monetize the blog with web advertisements but not the home page. This way people that are here primarily for maps or info about camping can get their information while my blog homepage is free of ads. I hate ads but with the cost of hosting going up, it should cover the cost of hosting and maybe give me a few bucks to cover my time creating maps.

I’ve come up with a framework in my head to make the switch over while not breaking too many things in the change over as I delete and upload the new versions of the data structure. The thing is I want to delete part of the old structure while uploading the new structure without taking all of the blog offline in the process. I should be able to do this but it takes a bit of planning as its a major undertaking, requiring a large amount of data to be re-uploaded in the process. mod-rewrite should get me most of the way there though in the transition – my goal is to break as little as possible or change links around.
