Delmar, New York

Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.

A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.

In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.

April 23, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly sunny and 53 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 42 degrees. Nice sunny morning, things are starting to green up nicely. ๐ŸŒฑ

Getting ready for my weekend trip up north. โ›บ Not hundred ๐Ÿ’ฏ percent sure on the route, as Friday remains a wild card. Still thinking about heading up to Tupper Lake for the second half of the week although the weather looks more unstable there on Saturday than the Southern Adirondacks. I’ll keep studying the forecasts.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around June 7th. Maximum dew point of 46 at 11am. That’s going to be a super nice day for late April, without a drop of humidity. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm. A year ago, we had mostly sunny. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2007. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

The sun will set at 7:46 pm with dusk around 8:16 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers, clouds ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 46 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 3am, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 18th. South wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1965.

I have to pack my clothes, personal stuff and cooking gear tonight. ๐Ÿณ I’ll also go shopping. Then tomorrow after work, it’s off to the Adirondacks. I’ll probably go straight out to Amsterdam tomorrow on the Thruway as the sunset is still relatively early and I’m planning on going relatively far north tomorrow. I should top off the propane tank and I really need to replace my work boots. ๐Ÿ‘ข I guess while at Tractor Supply I should also look at getting some inexpensive muck boots to wear around camp if it’s really muddy come Friday. I can use them all summer long when things get muddy.

Earth Day yesterday was fun ๐ŸŒŽ but it seems like so much of it has become commercialized in recent years. I guess it’s good people are talking about the problems but few want to make the tough decisions.

After I was supposed to be in bed last night, ๐Ÿ’คI ended up playing with the Processing Modeler in QGIS. I really want to develop an algorithm for figuring out the peaks of mountains reliably. I’ve noticed that the process I’m using isn’t always correctly identifying the peaks so I have to rethink the process. ๐Ÿ—ป

Looking ahead, there are 12 weeks until Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:30 pm with dusk at 9:04 pm. On that day in 2018, we had hot, humid, mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 96 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1900.

 Blackhead 456

April 19, 2019 Morning

Good afternoon! Today is Good Friday โœ๏ธ! Four weeks to Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€. Nothing like a good fire to celebrate that. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Mostly cloudy and 67 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 57 degrees. I figured that I had today off from work and it would be a nice thing to walk out here. Tomorrow is going to be rather wet and not much sun is expected until Easter Sunday. The skies will clear Sunday around 4 pm.

Ever since I’ve started walking out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center I’ve started to appreciate it more. Walking out here you get to see the transitioning landscape from suburbia to a more rural landscape, ๐Ÿธ and somehow the nature seems more real than when you fly out here in motorized transportation. ๐Ÿš™ Plus the walk is free ๐Ÿšถ The rail trail ๐Ÿš‚is nice but it lacks the benches, bathrooms and solitude of the environmental education center.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 72 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around May 23rd. Maximum dew point of 58 at 1pm. South wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1976. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

I have no rush today at Five Rivers for a change, absolutely nothing planned for this afternoon. I can just sit an observe the natural world as long as I want. ๐Ÿฆ Kind of nice for a change. Everything lately seems rushed or on a schedule.โŒ›

Ever since I started listening to John Burroughs books on Libre Vox, I’ve started to enjoy more and more nature study. ๐Ÿ“™ Not necessarily just looking for one species but observing animal behavior. Maybe hunting and fishing got me started but there is much to learn in the woods and wilderness. ๐ŸŒฒEven just watching cows ๐Ÿฎ march through rip and munch grass can be pretty fascinating to me. I used to be a much more of a go-go-go type person when I was younger in the woods but now I like to study and observe more.

The sun will set at 7:42 pm with dusk around 8:12 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Once I get back home this afternoon, I’ll have lunch and go down to the library. ๐Ÿ“– Mostly just to use the internet, maybe I’ll get a book out. Probably spend a few hours down there and maybe download some more videos to watch while riding the exercise bike. There is no shortage of videos this time of year on trout fishing, spreading manure or discing fields this time of year on the YouTube. Spring turkey too. Plus it’s interesting to find out what folks are doing on the many homesteading and off grid channels I follow. ๐ŸŽง To take it with me when I hike or ride the bus, I’ve written a script to convert the videos into audio files. Some videos really are better just to listen to the audio too.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 64 degrees at 11pm. 25 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 62 at 4am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1875.

Next weekends forecast is shaping up nicely. Depending if it stays on course I may very well just take off Thursday and Friday to go up to the Adirondacks. โ›บ That will be four nights in the wilderness which means I’ll have to move my site after three nights but I can relocate my campsite the day I head fishing ๐ŸŽฃ or hiking. ๐Ÿšถ Lots of sun means lots of solar power which is great and hopefully I can rely primarily on the solar to keep the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ charged. Looking forward to some nights in the wilderness.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.

 Central Avenue

April 18, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear Monday around noontime. Forget about nice weather this Easter weekend but next weekend in the extended outlook appears quite nice.

After the long week at work I got home ๐Ÿก and had a quick dinner of burritos and peas. Hopped on the excerise bike ๐Ÿšฒ caught up on the off grid and agriculture videos I had downloaded and then played around with QGIS for a while making up some maps.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 52 degrees at 10pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6am. South wind around 9 mph. If it wasn’t so damp, I’d probably leave my windows open tonight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had partly cloudy in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1875.

Tonight is April’s Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• which is only pink if the skies are clear and you wear rose ๐ŸŒน colored glasses. The sun will rise at 6:08 am with the first light at 5:38 am, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 10 hours and 25 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over last night.

I was going to go for my evening walk but decided against it based on the radar. ๐Ÿšถ Turns out we didn’t get any rain but I guess that’s fine as I was busy working on a GIS project.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 71 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. South wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1976. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Still thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about taking a hike around town tomorrow and then down to the library to use the WIFI and maybe get some books ๐Ÿ“š out. At some point I’ll need to get groceries, maybe Saturday evening.

All Easter Weekend will be cold and wet. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 68. South wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7am. Sunday, a chance of showers, mainly after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 50 at 7am. Other forecasts are a bit more optimistic for Easter Sunday. Typical average high for the weekend is 61 degrees. Certainly not a great weather forecast for the long weekend.

Looking ahead, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 4 weeks, Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• is a month away, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 11 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 15 weeks and Last Sunset After 7 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 24 weeks.

Pond Along Garnet Lake Road

April 18, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Today is the Thursday before Good Friday and th Easter Weekend ๐Ÿฐ. Also, the Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ. Four weeks to Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ. Spring is coming. Cloudy with some sprinkles of rain and 48 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜” There is a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Not a banner day, but the rain and relatively mild weather should lead to things greening up in the city. ๐ŸŒธ The skies will clear Sunday around 11 pm. Didn’t get particularly wet going down to the park and ride but I did see a close call between two cars on the road. ๐Ÿ’ฅI’m glad I don’t have to drive to work.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 11am, then a slight chance of showers after noon. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 57 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 13th. Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1976. 2.7 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

While today won’t win any awards on the weather front, โ˜ it is a work day and I don’t expect it to be super wet. Kind of like my entire vacation last year. But so be it. Tomorrow starts a three day weekend for me, although I’m pretty much focused on the following weekend with hopes for nicer weather. Still need to think about getting some inexpensive muck boots ๐Ÿ‘ข to use for camping as I’m sure it will still be a muddy and wet mess up north.

Speaking of boots ๐Ÿ‘ข, I need to replace my work boots as they’ve gotten really worn out in the soles and cracked. I’ve put a lot of miles on them walking ๐Ÿšถ around this winter. But that’s good as walking is so healthy. I’ve tried more expensive boots but with all the miles I put on them, they don’t last any longer.

The sun will set at 7:41 pm with dusk around 8:10 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 52 degrees at 12am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 30th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6am. Fog? ๐ŸŒ South wind 9 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had partly cloudy in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1875.

I’m looking forward to the long weekend, ๐Ÿฐ even if it doesn’t look that great. I did finally get a good night’s sleep but I still like the idea of sleeping in and working on some projects over the weekend. Tomorrow before the rain โ˜” I’m might walk out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and possibly on Sunday heading down to the Catskills for a hike. Maybe also some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ. But nothing is set in stone at this point.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:12 pm with dusk at 8:44 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny skies with patches of fog on the city and temperatures between 72 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1991.

Tree on Crane

April 17, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Save the Pine Bush Dinner Day, of course. ๐Ÿ˜‹ Should be a good one with lasagna and the SUNY Albany Protect Your Environment Club ๐ŸŒŽ from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Two weeks to May ๐Ÿ•Š. Enjoy it before the black flies are out. Mostly sunny and 44 degrees at Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind. It’s warmed up quickly on this certain to be nice spring day. ๐Ÿ

It was a pleasant walk down to the express bus. ๐ŸšŒ Lately the drivers have been parked at the bus stop early which gives me a little more time to work on blog posts as I wait to head downtownโœ. Lots of sun, smooth commute downtown, and grass is greening up.๐ŸŒฟ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 25th. That’s Arbor Day, a good day to celebrate trees ๐ŸŒฒand all they provide society like wood to burn. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2002. .3 inches of snow fell back in 1965.โ„

The sun will set at 7:39 pm with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 60 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

That Pine Bush dinner should be a good one. ๐Ÿ›Tastey dinner and a great presentation. I was thinking tonight would be a good time for going down to the park until I realized it was Pine Bush night.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 1st. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1948.

It looks like after tonight through the day after Easter, ๐Ÿฐ the day they celebrate in Western NY as Dingus Day, it’s going to be rather cloudy and wet. But depending on which forecast you look at the weather for the following weekend in the Adirondacks ๐Ÿ—ป looks pretty good. The snow is rapidly melting in the North Country for sure. It looks like a big warm up is ahead for the end of the month. With the rain we will be getting in Albany over the next few days followed by the heat, things will really be out in bloom. I don’t expect though for things to be very green when I’m up north, but blue skies would certainly be nice for camping, even if not as nice for fishing.โ›บ

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts ๐Ÿ‘‚ about both self improvement and studying spreadsheets about compound interest, savings and retirement. I do think going car less for a few years is an option to explore further but not until 2021 — it could save a lot of money.ย In the meantime, I’m researching different insurers and what I really should have on my policy. Won’t save a lot of money, but a little bit. I also been pricing out hunting camps and other remote off-grid properties, to see what I really need for resources to buy land in 10 years. Obviously, that has to be tied to some kind income going forward,ย  and probably just as important, some kind of affordable health insurance. But it’s good to have a realistic picture of the numbers and challenges ahead.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until May ๐Ÿ•Š when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.

Looking South West

April 16, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Pay day! That text message from the bank ๐Ÿฆ is always nice. As Dan O’Halloran said, it’s all about the ducking money. ๐Ÿ’ต Mostly sunny and 40 degrees walking down to the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. โ˜€ Kind of cold with the 16 mph breeze from the west-northwest ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 28 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ.

Not a half bad morning to walk down to the bus. ๐Ÿš Lots of sun but cold for sure, at least by what I think mid April should feel like. The grass ๐ŸŒพ is greening up a bit and a few trees in Albany are starting to bloom but I’m not predicting an early spring by any means. Winter is concluding.

I am very happy that after I updated my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ software the sound ๐Ÿ”Š is now back and working on the phone. It just makes the bus ride and walking around town more pleasant when I can listen to music or podcasts. ๐ŸŽง

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 56 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 11th. It will feel much colder though. Breezy, with a west wind 16 to 22 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. A year ago, we had rain in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2012. 5.3 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

The sun will set at 7:38 pm with dusk around 8:08 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 52 degrees. Breezy, 17 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 31mph. Today will have 13 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over yesterday.

I’ve been looking forward to a night that is nice enough to go down to park โ›ฒ but so far that hasn’t happened. It seems like every warm night it’s cloudy and rainy โ˜” and every other night is cold. Maybe I’m rushing spring too much as it will be here before you know it. And probably really hot. My neighbor already installed his air conditioner.

Again tonight, I’ll probably retire to bed early, ๐Ÿ› as I continue to have problems with sleeping. I fall asleep pretty early but then find myself waking up at night, and not real rested in the morning. I’ve also been a bit achy the past few mornings. I’m hoping with warmer weather, and the windows open more often, things will get better.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 34 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 7th. Northwest wind 11 to 16 mph becoming light after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1971.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now the Average High will be 70 ๐Ÿฎ when the sun will be setting at 8:12 pm with dusk at 8:44 pm. Much nicer weather๐ŸŒผ and the black flies are ahead. ๐Ÿœ I can’t wait to head out of town again on a nice Friday.

I am continuing to monitor the weather for a weekend from now. โ›บ It looks like the snow will be gone by then in the Southern Adirondacks area the 8-14 day outlook looks warm and dry. AccuWeather’s very long range forecast is more mixed. Doesn’t look that bad and I’m hoping to get several days up north while it’s nice.
