Delmar is a hamlet in the Town of Bethlehem, in Albany County, New York, United States. It is a suburb of the neighboring city of Albany. The community is bisected by NY Route 443 (Delaware Avenue), a major thoroughfare, main street, and route to Albany.
A census-designated place (CDP) has been established since 1980 by the U.S. Census Bureau for tabulating the population of what the census has defined as the boundaries of the urbanized area in and around Delmar. The population was 8,292 at the 2000 census, but it was not included as a CDP in the 2010 census.
In 2005, CNN/Money Magazine named the Delmar ZIP Code (an area larger than the Delmar hamlet or CDP) as one of the “Best Places to Live” in America, rating it the 22nd best place to live among what it called “Great American Towns.
Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to September ๐. Mostly sunny, hazy hot and humid and 83 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends tomorrow around 11 am. ๐
Going to be another hot day today. Loaded up the kayak on the truck ๐ but first I was hoping to spend the morning at the pool – but it looks closed today per the sign. โฑ๏ธIt was very breezy at camp this morning at 1,800 feet but less so at 475 ft at Watkins Glen. Hoping I can get parking at the boat launch – already filling up. ๐ ฟ
Last night was pretty hot too. ๐ฅNo campfire last night and I used the fan in my truck cap for most of the night as even up here high on the backbone ๐ป it was quite muggy and uncomfortable. Maybe nothing like a in the city but so be it. I gathered some wood though and tonight I’ll probably have a small fire if only because it’s been a few days.
The muffins ๐ I got from Walmart yesterday with some cold coffee made for a pretty good breakfast. I also bought cereal ๐ฅฃ yesterday but I’ll save that for a future day. Maybe tomorrow. I wanted a quick and easy breakfast as I wanted to make sure I got to the park ๐ early so I’d get parking.
Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 1pm. Mostly sunny and hot ๐, with a high of 92 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 10am. Southwest wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.
Hoping for better weather than yesterday, as it was so hot and humid yesterday morning. ๐ฐ And then by the time I planned to swim ๐๐ปโโ๏ธ there was that constant line of thunderstorms to the south. That’s why I am not going to hike early in the morning today. I was such a sweaty pig ๐yesterday and I only got five minutes in the pool due to thunderstorms. โ
If the pool doesn’t open today, ๐ถ I’ll head down to the boat launch. The water ๐ฆ is relatively calm and will be fine in the canal and if I stick close to shore. If I can’t get parking at the boat launch, I’ll probably get some ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar ๐ง I might than go down to Cayon Point to fish ๐ but that was more the plan tomorrow.
Solar noon ๐ is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-8.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐ starts at 7:36 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:15 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 5 seconds with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:24 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ง and thunderstorms ๐ฉ and temperatures around 82 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers. Partly cloudy ๐ง, with a low of 65 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 8pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 56 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1987.
A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.
One of the worst things about being in the Finger Lakes is the winos ๐ท who are more preoccupied with finding the next winery to taste and they’re driving ๐ slow and irregularly after doing tastings all day. They drive 25 mph in a 55 mph and slam on their brakes when they see a sign ๐ for the next watering hole ๐ณ. Almost slammed into one of them today.
Seneca County is infamous for the state’s highest fatality rate from DWI, drunk driving is a serious problem in wine country ๐คช although that’s not something that the economic development people like to talk about. I like taking 414 as it’s fast and doesn’t have any speed traps or small towns but the slow moving drivers who slam on their brakes when they see the next watering hole on the road is so obnoxious. ๐ฅ
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until September ๐ when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:09 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies with q few rain showers and temperatures between 75 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.
The other day when it was pouring rain I hopped on the bus to pick my truck up from the oil change. Riding the bus is so strange these days with the pandemic smoldering in Albany County and raging all around us.
You ever so anonymously board from the back of the bus and leave from the same place entrance. You never really see the bus drivers face or even acknowledge their existence, you just get on and off, no fare required.
Its kind of a surreal experience, sitting on bus alone, trying to stay six feet away from anyone else, quietly sitting there, trying to avoid touching anything. The buses stink of cleaner and their are many signs to remind you to maintain 6 feet social distancing and leave the way you came – through the back door.
Good evening! Mostly clear and 70 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐. The dew point is 57 degrees. It’s a very pleasant evening. Lots of stars โจ out back and the crickets ๐ฆ are singing ๐ถ their song.
I went over to John Wolcott’s house ๐and we went through the most interesting file ๐ of old photos and documents relating to preservation or lack therefore of the Fort Orange site now buried โฐ under Interstate 787. ๐ I took some pictures of the files and I’ve posted some and will continue to post more in coming days. ๐ผ
It was a pretty quiet day at work ๐ปand I was able to get the quick photo ๐ธ uploader up and working. This allows me to quickly upload photos from my smartphone ๐ฑ to the blog and some of the other content as an alternative to the traditional uploader which is better for uploading several maps or photos at once. ๐ Combined with the better camera on my new phone I should be able to post high quality pictures from my trips on the fly.
I got next week off from work ๐๏ธ and I’m heading out to the Finger Lakes this weekend for a week or socially distant vacationing. It’s a real vacation, none of this remote work from the wilderness. ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฒ This year I don’t expect to spend every day at a state park ๐ but instead will do more hiking and kayaking ๐ถ away from the crowds. The first half of the week looks pretty nice โ but if the second half kind of is rainy โ I have lots of books to read ๐.
Might try to camp at that site with more limited cell reception as I kind of want more quiet. ๐ I’m not saying I won’t visit the Glen Dairy Bar ๐จ๐ฆ a few times or maybe get up early one or two mornings and get a spot to swim ๐ at the Watkins Glen pool but it’s not going to be the focus of some years. ๐ปI want to do different things, more hiking and paddling and less crowded gorges or touristy places during the pandemic. ๐พ Nothing wrong with staying in camp a few days with a book ๐ or watching the cows graze on the pastures ๐ฎ. I really do get tired of all the emails ๐ง and social media ๐ especially the trolls send emails that are downright harassing.๐คฌ
I picked up most of the supplies and food ๐ฒ I will need for the first few days of my Finger Lakes trip. I also got two waterproof cases for my phone and camera ๐ธ should I decide to bring them kayaking ๐ถ. I also have a knock off Go Pro camera ๐น which I should figure out how to attach to my kayak. I’ll need some night crawlers ๐ for fishing ๐ฃ but I’ll get them once I get out there. I’m also looking at getting another water container with a spigot that I can put on a table and turn the spout ๐ง for water.
Tonight will be mostly clear ๐, with a low of 56 degrees at 4am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Maximum dew point of 57 at 9pm. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1994.
Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ Moon with 93% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:02 am, followed by dawn at 5:21 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:53 am in the east-northeast (66ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 10 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ The golden hour ends at 6:32 am with sun in the east-northeast (73ยฐ).Tonight will have 9 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over last night.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 18th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 8am. Light northwest wind. Hell, that’s going to feel like a an autumn day. ๐ Low due point, cool temperatures and deep blue skies. ๐ป A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1900.
Tomorrow as downtime allows I’m going to pack ๐ผ and clean my apartment ๐ฟgetting ready to leave probably early Friday and working remotely from camp in Madison County. I could change my mind depending on how busy Thursday and Friday are but actually prefer to get up early rather than making the evening slog especially with the sun setting earlier now. ๐ I also need to go to the laundromat, ๐ probably work from my truck there plus the atm ๐ง although I guess I could do that in Friday morning.
I got two more books out of the library today. ๐ Some how with the online ordering I ended up with more books than expected – I kept ordering things I thought I wanted to read ๐ and with delays I kept ordering more. Kind of like AliExpress ๐ฆ but only free. Most of the books are on farming and homesteading – it’s a topic I’ve been doing a lot of reading about this summer plus one book on solar power and off grid living. ๐ก Also got Storey’s Guide to Raising Pigs ๐. My fascination with pig farming started with Cam Edwards and maybe my neighbors raising pigs growing up and has only grown since learning about the grazing breeds like this Idaho Pasture Pig ๐ฝ that is so trendy these days at least on the internet.
In four weeks on September 2 the sun will be setting in the west (281ยฐ) at 7:27 pm,๐ which is 42 minutes and 51 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 76 and 62 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 57 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1953. It’s funny to think we’re talking about September so soon. I should see about updating the countdown clock, it’s been a while since I’ve done that. ๐ Maybe tomorrow – got to find the dates of all the upcoming autumn holidays. ๐
